I've got all kinds of issues going on-My p12 key will not work for volume and I also have this black box appear on my screen and won't go away and I have 2 of shut down,restart and logout.

Recently, my newer (last year) iMac probably running 10.5 started speaking and wont shut up... there is no obvious way to turn it off. I usually figure problems out myself but there are no system preferences that effect it. I even changed the voice in preferences as a test and it is still the same guy reading everything clicked in all applications except when I am in system preferences so far. Usually when I run into a dead end like this there is some mystery key command that works... anyone know?I also noticed that some of the top line (f) keys are not doing what they are supposed to any longer as well... volume up opens the window for expose & spaces it looks like and does not control the volume monitor brightness controls are not working either... I went to the key and mouse preferences and set the key strokes to default and still the same.

Now my volume controls and other features on the F1 - F12 Keys do not work.Went into Keyboard Preferences and selected and deselected the [ ] Use All F1, F2, F3 keys as standard function keys. Regardless of the setting, the volume controls do not work. Even when holding down the [Fn] Key. I can adjust volume with the mouse ( new Magic Mouse ) using the control on the menu bar.

On my keyboard when I push mute or volume up or down, the computer shows the mute/vol up/vol down icon on the screen when I push it and it makes the volume sound, but it does not actually mute the tv or make the volume go up or down. Only the actual TV controls will make it work.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a Mac Pro and not too long ago I swapped from a fat, heavy and filthy white Apple Keyboard to a new skinny silver one. I like it, and also love that the F7-9 Skip Back-Pause/Play-Skip Forward keys work for iTunes, even when another app is active (what's the word I'm looking for - in focus or whatever). But I use Optical output, so the volume keys (F10-12) don't do anything. I know that, when iTunes is the active app, I can command-+/- to change the volume, but I'd love to be able to map the F10-12 keys to do that - without having to have iTunes active (playing, but not the active window).

When I hit Apple key+N in Safari, a new browser window will open, I will be switched to the Finder, and a new window in the Finder will open up. This new window in the Finder is the Computer window, the one listing the HD, the network icon, and any attached disks. It is not the same window I would get by hitting Apple+N while in the Finder. Only seems to do this while in Safari.
View 1 Replies View RelatedToday Dashboard is not working.  I click on the Dashboard icon in the Dock.  The application does not respond. I click and hold the Dashboard icon in the Dock and get the balloon. I click on "Show Dashboard." Dashboard does not activate. I go into the Application folder on my hard drive and double-click the Dashboard icon. Still no action.Â
This problem started this morning, after I turned on the computer for the day. I have never had any trouble with Dashboard before.

I have a late 2009 mac mini - 2.26 ghz, 2gb ram, 160gb hdd yadda yadda.
It was working fine until this morning. Whenever I click on an application in the dock, it opens up the applications folder. And whenever I click a link in firefox, it opens in a new tab, and is incredibly annoying!
Starting a few days ago when I double click a folder on the desktop it no longer opens. Instead, I am taken to a new desktop window that shows the folder clicked plus all other items on the desktop. How do I restore the double click to open the folder? I have tried resetting the double click speed with no results.Â
View 1 Replies View RelatedI put "levelwidget" on the dashboard - it is supposed to make a macbook into a Level. Sounded interesting...now I regret! The widget is corrupted and now when I try to open the dashboard it immediately closes and gives me an error message "you can't open the application motion because power pc applications are no longer supported" How do I delete this widget so I can open the dashboard. I've tried to look up the file, but can't seem to find dashboard widget files. Â

I used the migration assistant to move most of my stuff from my old MBP to my new one, but that seems to have had the strange effect of keeping the keyboard settings for the old MBP. Very simply, I'd like to set f12 to increase volume, F11 to decrease etc. but I can't work out where I would change those settings. I've been able to change things like expose and dashboard, but this is proving to be a pain in the backside.

sometime this week the volume control on my pro keyboard stopped working. you can hear the "pip" noise when you hit the louder / softer buttons on the keyboard but the level doesn't change. i am still on good terms with my mute control, however.i have to resort to using the sound control in system preferences instead to increase or decrease the volume (sigh!)
i am running 10.2.8 and at about the same time as this problem occurred, I'd upgraded quicktime and think maybe it's the culprit, but before i waste a few hours playing sherlock holmes.

When I adjust my volume controls on my keyboard, F10 thru F12, to listen to audio out loud, I get this picture (attached). However, if I am listening to headphones, the volume still works.
I tried shutting down and restarting, and I've been thru my preferences. The drop down volume control on the top right of the screen is set to as loud as it can go.
Relevant hardware: new Mac Pro, aluminum wired full keyboard, external speakers (Line Out). Every now and then, the volume up & down keys (F11 & F12) stop working. (Usually seems to happen upon waking from sleep, but not certain of pattern yet.) The volume keys still make the translucent volume graphic pop up, and they still make that pop-up's slider move up and down, and they make that feedback/confirmation "blip" sound grow louder or softer. But, this has no effect on the actual volume (except if I move it all the way down to Mute; that works).
I can only change volume with the mouse -- in the menu bar or in System Preferences. The keyboard volume buttons have no effect on those sliders, when this problem arises. All the other F-keys continue to work properly, so it's not a general keyboard or F-key issue. Only volume up/down. If I restart the computer, the problem is fixed. And I just noticed that if I go into System Preferences and change the Output to "Built-In" and then back to "Line Out," that fixed the problem too. At least, for now.
OS X Lion, output: Cinema Display. Volume doesn't change by control keys on keyboard. But it does with software volume control (on iTunes, for example). When I press control buttons on keyboard, volume icon on display appears and changes - but not the volume. It lets me know that buttons are working, and Mac recognizes that.

I have an Audiobox USB audiointerface with KRKROKIT5 speakers and must turn up or down the volume on the interface. the Keyboard button wont work.
But my father uses Bose speakers but can do both! However, he does not use an audio interface.
Can I get my imac to do both? And if so, is this a good idea with such good speakers? Is the keyboard just turning it up digitally?
I only ask because it can be annoying reaching up over the speaker to turn the nob instead of just hitting a button on the keyboard.
I spilled a bit of drink on my Aluminum Apple Keyboard, and now the F12 (volume +) key doesn't work. The F10 (mute) and F11 (volume -) still work, so, is there a way to do THIS:
Re-map the keys so that,
F10 is now Volume Decrease
and
F11 is now Volume Increase
How can I make my replacement usb keyboard adjust volume? After the cat spilled a glass of water on my wireless keyboard I had to get a new one. I asked the folks at my local Apple store both over the phone and in person if the 10-key keyboard (non-wireless) they were going to sell me was compatible with Mac OS X version 10.5.8 (I think I'm Leopard) and they assured me it was. When I hit the volume keys, it initially used the assigned function of the F10, F11, and F12 keys (manipulated the windows and dashboard). I removed those key assignments through system preferences but now the volume keys do absolutely nothing. I tried looking for volume controls through the assignments but couldn't even find them to assign the F10, F11 and F12 keys to them.Â

I recently obtained a Mini which I've connected to my TV for watching movies/etc. I don't have a keyboard or mouse on the Mini.I ripped a disc the other night (via a remote connection) and realized that I don't know how to eject the disc from the Mini without a keyboard, mouse, or remote connection from my MBP. I suppose there is probably some way to script MTR and then execute a disktool afterwards but what if I'm just watching a disc and want to eject it?
View 12 Replies View RelatedI recently ran an update for my Macbook Pro. After the update, the volume keyboard shortcut does not work. I have the setting for the function keys to work like normal function keys so I have to press the fn key to change the volume. This does not work and changing the setting does not work. I cannot add a shortcut either. Whenever I push the shortcut, I get a grayed out screen with a symbol showing that I cannot change the volume. I can still make changes by clicking on the volume symbol at the top of my screen but I really need the shortcut back.
