Intel Mac :: Volume Keys Not Working On Apple 10-key Keyboard?
Jun 1, 2012
After the cat spilled a glass of water on my wireless keyboard I had to get a new one. I asked the folks at my local Apple store both over the phone and in person if the 10-key keyboard (non-wireless) they were going to sell me was compatible with Mac OS X version 10.5.8 (I think I'm Leopard) and they assured me it was. When I hit the volume keys, it initially used the assigned function of the F10, F11, and F12 keys (manipulated the windows and dashboard). I removed those key assignments through system preferences but now the volume keys do absolutely nothing. I tried looking for volume controls through the assignments but couldn't even find them to assign the F10, F11 and F12 keys to them.Â

My keyboard stopped working so I went to the apple store to replace it with another one. Now I am back home and the keys at the very top are not working correctly (volumn F12 shows the dashboard, F11 takes the screen up and away, F8 pause button shows spaces, etc.). What should I do to correct this problem - I assume I probably need to download some type of softwear but what? I have a Mac OS X Version 10.5.8 desktop - 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

My two-year-old daughter was messing with the keyboard on my iMac, and now the keys on the keyboard are not functioning as they were before. The delete key doesn't work, "a" types a symbol-topped "a" followed by the copyright symbol, etc...Â
I've restores the factory settings to the function keys in system preferences, but the problem persists.

Immediately press and hold the Option key. After a few seconds, the Startup Manager should appear. The Startup Manager scans for available available volumes. <- This doesn't work at all. I'm using apple wireless keyboard.

I'm using the thin aluminum USB external keyboard and suddenly my 8ik, diagonal of keys stopped working (now I'm using my laptop keyboard). Anyone know if this is typically a sign of a broken keyboard, or a user issue?

I have a Mac Pro and not too long ago I swapped from a fat, heavy and filthy white Apple Keyboard to a new skinny silver one. I like it, and also love that the F7-9 Skip Back-Pause/Play-Skip Forward keys work for iTunes, even when another app is active (what's the word I'm looking for - in focus or whatever). But I use Optical output, so the volume keys (F10-12) don't do anything. I know that, when iTunes is the active app, I can command-+/- to change the volume, but I'd love to be able to map the F10-12 keys to do that - without having to have iTunes active (playing, but not the active window).

I spilled a bit of drink on my Aluminum Apple Keyboard, and now the F12 (volume +) key doesn't work. The F10 (mute) and F11 (volume -) still work, so, is there a way to do THIS:
Re-map the keys so that,
F10 is now Volume Decrease
and
F11 is now Volume Increase

So everything's been fine on this Mac Book. Just about an hour ago, my volume keys stopped working. I tried re-setting the PRAM. That didn't work. Imade sure voice overs and such were disabled. Still nothing.

Installed a new bluetooth keyboard today. Now my volume controls and other features on the F1 - F12 Keys do not work.Went into Keyboard Preferences and selected and deselected the [ ] Use All F1, F2, F3 keys as standard function keys. Regardless of the setting, the volume controls do not work. Even when holding down the [Fn] Key. I can adjust volume with the mouse ( new Magic Mouse ) using the control on the menu bar.

The volume and other function keys aren't working as they used to. The brightness key doesn't do anything and the volume key isn't working either. I've tried to fix it on system preferences but it didn't work. They're not set to be used like normal function keys. I don't know what is happening they were working fine.

I have recently put windows 7 professional on my aluminum macbook, installed all the drivers, and so forth. I hook up my macbook up to an external monitor, and use a logitech dinovo keyboard for a mac. However, when I am in windows 7, the function keys do not adjust volume, brightness, and any other of the functions.

I have a 2011 (?) macbook air and ever since my trip to the genius bar for a battery issue my function keys don't work after I wake it up (just opening screen). May also be related to last firmware update? Â
I have checked the function key mapping in settings and they are normal. The volume key launches Expose and the brightness keys (and others) don't do anything. A reboot helps but only untill the first time I put it to sleep (close/open lid).Â

Really stumped by this. Recently (I think it was after a MacOS update but I'm not sure) my brightness and volume keys stopped working on my 2011 13" MacBook Air running MacOS 10.9.4. The F keys still work i.e. if I press Fn-F10, I get the expected effect from pressing F10, but if I just press F10, volume remains unchanged (should get muted). Mission Control, Launchpad, and media keys (rewind, play/pause, ff) all work.Â
Using Karabiner, I checked to make sure the keys generate correct events. They do. Pressing the brightness keys generates 0x3 and 0x2. Pressing the volume keys generates 0x7, 0x1, and 0x0, which are the expected key codes defined in ev_keymap.h, the header file for HID. I can also adjust volume and brightness using the sliders in the appropriate section of "System Preferences."Â
So volume and brightness itself can be changed. They keyboard keys themselves work and produce correct keycodes. But whatever operating system feature (HID?) that is supposed to read the keyboard input and translate it into commands to the display and sound drivers doesn't work.Â
I've tried all the obvious stuff (restart, safe mode, toggle the Function key option in System Preferences->Keyboard). I've reset SMC and PRAM. Nothing has worked so far. Â
The only other thing I can think of is that a while back (before this problem started occuring) I got annoyed by the power button in the top-right corner of the keyboard, which I would occasionally hit accidentally. I searched for a way to disable it, and I think I found something -- now it only does something if it's held for 2 seconds. A quick up-down strike does not do anything. Perhaps in tweaking some setting to achieve this behavior (I don't remember what I did), I screwed up something with the brightness/volume keys, but this screw up only became evident later.Â

I recently spilled a protein shake over my mb pro. It spilled on the right side, but I quickly cleaned it with a wet tissue and dried it up. The problem, now, is that the illuminated keyboard isn't working..only a few random keys are working and the rest aren't..
What should I do? I have a 1 year warranty left, but I'm not sure it'll be covered.

My cat slept on my MacBook last night and now the keyboard isn't working properly ... Some keys don't do anything at all and some keys do things they shouldn't... Any clues on how to fix this? I called the apple support line and we don't think it was anything to do with the settings in 'universal settings'. I'm not sure what else to do and this is one time I do wish I had a man in the house?! Or at least someone else who has half a clue! I rely haven't had many problems with my MacBook 'till now. I'm operating on Mac os x 10.6.8Â Also, 2 cats free to good home. Or anyhome, it doesn't even need to be 'good'! Â

One of the keys on my keyboard are not working. The letter "b" isn't working for me.(I had to copy+paste the letter.) Is there any solution? I restarted my computer and even followed to apple instructions in hopes that it would work. However, the key still doesn't work.

I am not sure what happened but it seems my two year old child might have spilled something on my macbook. The keyboard stopped working and when I pressed a key the letter "Z" got stuck. I purchased a used "topcase" from ebay, installed it and I am still experiencing the same phenomonon, although other letters can type normally. My gut instinct is that there is something else wrong ""deeper to the keyboard".

I have a macbook pro late 2011. Yesterday, I was using as usual my macbook the whole day. So I went to bed and shut the system down usually. Today I've started the OSX up and the number keys on the keyboard were not working anymore... The weird thing is that the whole keyboard is currently working except the keys from 1-9 (even the Zero key is working as usual) and I have to use the virtual keyboard to type them...Â
