I'm looking for some guidance on setting up a Mini (1.83 CD, 2GB) as a Time Machine server (that I can use to back up my MBP to wirelessly via my network) and I also want to run it as a dedicated bittorrent box. The system I'm replacing is a toshiba laptop running ubuntu with the Azureus webUI. I want some bittorrent client that includes a webUI (hopefully I can just use Azureus here).

So I found a unibody MacBook with a 250gb HD for a great deal on craigslist and snagged it up. I already loaded snow leopord onto it, but here are my questions:
1.) How do I erase everything from the first owner to get it like a fresh MacBook?
2.) How do I restore all the stuff from my time machine backup to get it like my old MacBook was set up?
Trying to partition by back up disk in order to copy hard drive on my iMac using time machine. I have my lap top already on the external disk and just need to partition. Did not accept the first and second try.

Ok so I was thinking. I know I can use an external hard drive to back up my mac with time machine. What I am not sure about, and I know it isn't a feature offered in Windows Home Server, but if I am not mistaken I can use my MacBook to access Windows Home Server to share my media right? Since it is through my network and all would I be able to just designate Windows Home Server as the location to store my Time Machine data? Incase it crashes I could just rebuild my MacBook through my network couldn't I?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a couple older PC's and a late 2008 MBP (my first Mac - yes, I am a Mac noob). I use boot camp to run XP on the MBP and decided to use that for the initial set-up of the server. Things were going well until it was updating the server software. It ticked up to 18% and stalled. About 45 minutes later, I (wrongly) figured that I shouldn't have tried to use my MBP and stopped the update. I switched gears and tried to run it on my HP desktop. It did the same thing - went to 18% and stopped. After another 30+ minutes, I called HP, and waited and waited on hold. I was getting impatient and decided to run the HP server recovery disk. While that was running, I got through to HP (close to an hour on hold). The guy seemed knowledgeable and told me that the updates are stalling at 18%. He told me that they are hearing waits/stalls that average around 2 hours at the 18% figure. For anyone else with a new HP mediasmart server, learn from my lesson and be patient.
The HP rep told me that it should not be a problem to run the first install with a windows OS via boot camp. This is not true for something like parallels. In the end, I did get the install done through XP via boot camp. He also told me that they are seeing problems with people dedicating a space larger than 100 GB's for Time Machine. He said it works for some people for a while, but it inevitably fails. When it fails, he said they are finding that people have to run a full server recovery (you lose all of your data) to get TM running again. They have not been successful with just creating a new slot/space for TM. Has anyone else heard this?.......................

I have a Mac pro that I use at home. I want to set it up as a server. Like a hosting server that I can log on to anywhere in the world, not just on my local network. I want to set it up similar to a hosting account through someone like godaddy. Where I can log in using FTP or something else. Do I need to install Mac OS X server? I've tried searching but I keep find local home servers. Anyone got any ideas? I'm guessing the first thing I need is a static IP, where do I get that?

Many users are prompeted to reuse or create a new backup.
The problem is I log in with credentials of 'USER A', and on the dialog it lists another 'USER B', userb.sparsebundle as the file to reuse. Â
I recently had a iMac hard drive die, and i tired to use the time machine on the server, with 'USER A' credentials, i got 4 listings and none of them were 'USER A'Â
I check the drobo and 'USER A''s sparsebundle is there. I have tried changeing permissions to read the sparsebudle, but the bundle is a 250k file, not a diskimage of the files even. Â
How do i resolve this problem of the wrong users coming up on "reuse or create new backup"?Â
How do i access the lost sparsebundle that i cannot log into to get the files for the user that needs them?

Yesterday I tried to enter time machine to restore some files I have lost. Whenever I select "enter time machine" nothing happens. The disk doesn't mount, the time machine icon doesn't spin, nothing happens. Â

I'm trying to setup a macmini server with four different firewire drives (has this working in 10.6.8 working great) however in lion server you can only have ONE timemachine backup destination.apple put an Share items/Backups folder with a .com.apple.timemachine.supported file in it. and set permissions to a group com.apple.backup_access However i can't dublicate this setup and have the system accept an extra folder on another drive.Â

I have Time Machine backing up my MacMini Snow Leopard Server to an external harddrive.  When the backup runs, it never completes, but it also does not throw an error message. It just gets stuck around 300MB or so and eventually starts over. As you can see it does not seem to backup everything. I have tried using TimeTracker to see what it might be getting stuck on but I can't really make heads or tails of it. I have even removed the old backup and started a new one. It backs up once fully (I think) and then after that it just gets stuck like this.Â
I should mention the drive it backs up is two separate partitions SnowLeopard Server Volume and PrimeRoot Volume, both of which need to be backuped. I was thinking maybe a permissions issue? But I just don't know where to look.

I just wanted to add a sharing only user for my girlfriends new MacBook that she could use to connect to a shared Time Machine Volume. If I add a new standard user, this user can connect to my server via finder (connect as...) and see the shared drives. If the same user tries to connect to the Time Machine Backup Volume via the settings dialog, it receives an error message (OSStatus-error 5). If I add a sharing only user, this user cannot connect via finder or Time Machine (same error).
The clients console states the following error message:
/System/Library/CoreServices/NetAuthAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/NetAuthAgent[2471] AFP error -5018 mapped to EIO
This maybe posted in the wrong area, apologies if it is. I've been asked by people where I work to setup a Wiki. Now my initial thoughts would be that it has to go on a Windows server but looking around it can be installed/configured on OSX server.My question is, has anyone got a decent idiots guide on how to set this up. I'm waiting for a copy of Leopard server to come in which I believe has a Wiki function built in, does anyone have any experience on this?

I have a Mac Mini and two mac notebooks that run Snow Leopard. I've been backing these machines up to a 300 GB drive that is now full. Today I brought home a 2TB drive so that I can use Time Machine to backup the desktop Mac Mini. Can I use the same hard drive to use Time Machine for the two notebooks, as well? What about storing other backups on that drive as well? I'm just trying to map the most logical approach to having safe backups.
