Mac Mini :: AppleHDADriver Crash And Kernel NOT Finding Directories?

Apr 11, 2012

I have a mid 2010 mac mini, still under Applecare. I have been dealing with Apple support for 7 months now and cannot get a resolution to the problem other then their telling me it is software, not hardware. I consistently get errors indicating the AppleHDADriver crashes and goes to an error handler. This happens 100's of times a second. Along with this error I get an error stating the kernel is unable to find a directory. Both these errors show up in the console log under 'kernel errors' and happen daily.

The result of the problem seems to be the status bar/system clock freezes and doesn't update. The clock freeze occurs mainly when coming out of sleep, but has also happened durning full operation of the machine.

It seems no matter what software I install, or what vendor it is from or even what the software is used for, something crashes, the system slows down and freezes... It was two days ago the system started with an unresponsive mouse.

Any ideas he would be great... I am tired of trying to get the Apple 'senior advisor' to truly talk solutions. I lost 100's of hours when this problem first occurred as it started with Snow Leopard. When doing a clean install of Lion as directed by Apple support it was discovered the old time machine files were corrupt and couldn't be used to restore...

Those errors in the kernel have been there from the beginning... Across Snow Leopard, Snow Leopard clean install, Lion upgrade, Lion clean install and still those kernel errors are there consistent. This should indicate a hardware problem someplace and not software...

OS X :: Mac Mini - Hardrive Crash

May 10, 2009

I was recently using my computer the other day which is a mac mini. I left it on and came back to use it and when I just clicked the mouse the screen froze. I tried using Ctrl-Alt-Esc but nothing worked so I just turned off the computer. I rebooted it again and I hear a clicking noise and the computer wont load, just a blank white screen. Repeated the same thing multiple times and still the same. Unfortunatley for me I didn't make a backup of the hard drive. I brought the computer into the apple store to get it fixed.

I wanted to know if there is any way to salvage(data recovery) any of the files from the hardrive or someway to recover them. I looked at how much it costs to do a data recovery and the price seems way to expensive.

OS X :: Finding 32 Bit Kernel Extensions

Aug 29, 2009

From what I understand the main reason the kernel in SL boots into 32-bit is because of potential 32-bit kernel extensions.

Is there a way to find out what kernel extensions a machine has and whether those are 32 or 64 bit extensions? This way I could figure out if I should boot with 32 or 64 bit kernel.

Mac Mini :: Why Does It Crash And Reboot When Do A Time Machine Backup To A USB Hard Disk

Jun 17, 2012

This is the second time it has happened, the first was with a powered USB Hard Disk, this time with a WD Elements HD. The first time, it crashed and popped up an alert saying the machine needed to be restarted. After restarting it continued, then around half way through it crashed again. It then would not boot as it said the Mac Mini's HD was corrupted.Tried to repair using the recovery mode, with no joy.Reformatted Hard Disk, went to recover using online recovery, got a 6002F error and it wouldn't reinstallTook to apple service centre, they wanted to charge to reinstall the OS (put them straight on that ).

Now it looks like it's doing it again, this time after the first crash I'm just copying the files I need manually to the external Hard Disk, which so far is OK.

MacBook Pro :: Finding Total Users Of Snow Leopard 64bit Kernel

Apr 11, 2010

I know by default that Snow Leopard starts up in 32-bit kernel but anyone here boot into the 64-bit kernel? I think to do this you'd have to hold down 6 and 4 keys while booting.

By now almost all 3rd party apps are running 64-bit and all this time I've totally forgot about the 64-bit kernel!

I've just booted up to 64-bit kernel and all apps load instantaneously!

Mac Mini :: Kernel Panic Being Caused By Magic Mouse?

Jul 3, 2012

Lately i've been playing around with minecraft and developing a few mods. Every lets say ~ 20 minutes I've been getting a kernel panic with the top kext being com.apple.BluetoothMultitouch... The only thing that I know of that is bluetooth and multitouch is my magic mouse... That seems odd because the magic mouse is built for mac osx. i've been hearing around that my mac could have a bad osx install or faulty hardware. I just hope its not faulty hardware, even though my apple care has not expired yet.

OS X :: Snow Leopard 32bit Versus 64bit Kernel - How To Boot It / Finding Supported Hardware

Aug 27, 2009

So, with Snow Leopard, there is a 32-bit kernel, and a 64-bit kernel. Correct?

As I understand it, it will boot into the 32-bit kernel by default, but if your hardware is supported, you can select the 64-bit kernel.

My question is - where is the list of supported hardware, and how do you select the 64-bit kernel?

My confusion comes from several posts and various articles which all say the first-gen aluminium iMac has a 32-bit EFI, and therefore can only boot into the 32-bit kernel. But I've just downloaded an app called Startup Mode Selector, which shows you your system config, and it says I have a 64-bit EFI.

Mac Mini :: Mid 2011 Kernel Panic With Lion Internet Recovery

Mar 25, 2012

My Mac Mini froze while using Safari and watching a youtube video, so I restarted the machine by holding down the power button, then on startup I reloaded Safari, and it completely froze again. This time around, I got a kernel panic on boot. I tried booting into single user mode by holding down the shift key, but that still gave me a kernel panic. So I tried using the Lion Internet Recovery mode by holding down command-option-R when booting. The OS showed the Internet Recovery progress bar, but when it completed and the machine rebooted, I got a kernel panic again.

Is there anything else I can try to recover this machine, or do I need to take it into an Apple store to have them fix it?  It's a mid-2011 model, so I don't have a DVD drive in it, so I can't use a boot disc, although I guess I could use a bootable USB, but I don't have another machine to create one with.

I figure if it kernel panics from an Internet Recovery, then that takes my hard drive and anything that was installed on it out of the equation. I've also disconnected all external devices, drives, etc, and only have a monitor and keyboard/mouse attached to it, so that rules out any other devices that might be causing problems.

Mac Mini :: Kernel Panics, Sudden Log-out And Apple Hardware Test?

Apr 3, 2012

I have been experiencing Kernel Panics and Sudden logouts twice a week. I thought it was strange, because my boss just bought me the MacMini with 8gb RAM preinstalled.I want to solve the problem, but I don't want to send my machine to support in vain.(because the MacMini is actually owned by the institution I work in, and those things take time). So I ran some diagnoses I heard about on the internet, but I don't know what they mean, or what I should do with it. I made two kind of diagnoses:I tried to run Quick Apple Hardware Test.I tried to run Mac version of memtest in single-user mode. I made both diagnoses with each memory separatedly, in every slot combination possible, and both memories together. Everytime I tested both memories together, AHT froze while testing memory, and memtest resulted in failures.Everytime I tested a memory module separatedly, memtest and AHT gave no errors. Is there any explanation for my Mac Mini not like my both memory modules together? I updated OS X to 10.7.3 with combo update, and FileVault(don't know it makes any difference). I made all tests with no peripherals other than a DVI monitor on HDMI out, a Magic Mouse, and a Apple (wired) Keyboard. What should I do?Should I send it to support and spend my next month without a machine?

Mac Mini :: Finding Mini Display Port To Dvi-d?

I have a new Mac Mini. I have the mini display port to dvi adapter that came with it. I want to connect to Samsung monitor with a dvi-d port. My problem is that I can't find a dvi-d cable shorter than 6'. Since the Mac Mini sits on my desk next to the monitor, I would like to have a short cable or one that would go directly from the computer to the monitor without an intervening 6' long cable. Anyone know where I can get one?

MacBook Pro :: Snow Leopard Has A 32bit Kernel As The Default Like 64bit Kernel?

Aug 13, 2009

Yes you read that right. Your brand spanking new MBP will use a 32-bit kernel as default.

You can force 64-bit kernel but some of your hardware will not be working.

So all that marketing crap about the benefits of 64-bit etc are all B.S.

I don't want a million threads about how this will not effect the running of 64 bit apps, etc. because it will. Your 64-bit app will run but it will not be able to address more than 4Gb of RAM.

There are also many more advantages to having a 64-bit kernel.

OS X :: Cannot Open Directories From The Dock

Apr 20, 2010

I'm running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2 on a MacBook3,1 (Late 2007). I'm currently having issues with the Finder. Current symptoms are:

1. When I click a directory in the Dock to open it in the Finder, I get an error that reads "You can't open the application Finder because it may be damaged or incomplete."

2. I've tried repairing permissions (from the OS and from the Install Disc), but the Disk Utility doesn't make any repairs even though it tells me it has made the repairs, because the exact same errors come up the next time I try to repair the permissions.

3. I also verified the disk, and it said I had to start from boot from another volume and repair the disk, so I booted from the install DVD and did so.....................

I just started a new job and they have me working on mac since I have some basic experience. Anyways I'm working with files within an app and trying to use terminal to access some of those files.

The issue comes up when I try to change the directory in terminal to the app /user/applications/app.app/folder). I can get into the user directory or the app directory but it won't let me into the app. I have never really used terminal before so I don't know what I should be expecting here.

Nov 2, 2008

I can open the files om the disk but when I try to cope then it says "Cannot copy file - unable to create file at the destination"

If I had a look at the permissions, they look fine:

Code:
drwxr-xr-x 1 me staff 4096 Sep 11 08:36 Movies
drwxr-xr-x 1 me staff 8192 Aug 9 13:12 Photo
The "destination" is my home dir but I also tried /tmp. And the user "me" is .. me
