OS X :: Finding 32 Bit Kernel Extensions

Aug 29, 2009

From what I understand the main reason the kernel in SL boots into 32-bit is because of potential 32-bit kernel extensions.

Is there a way to find out what kernel extensions a machine has and whether those are 32 or 64 bit extensions? This way I could figure out if I should boot with 32 or 64 bit kernel.

OS X :: Finding Microsoft Office 2008 And File Extensions

Sep 15, 2009

So I was saving MS office documents to my mac, and had to email an assignment to my teacher whom recieved it and couldn't open it because I then noticed I sent it and it had no file extension so I added .docx and sent it to her.

But I was playing around with the same file and remove the .docx extension and sent it to myself and this time it did have the file extension on my Windows computer

Also I have finder to not show file extensions and they still do, I'm a bit confused about all this.

Mac Mini :: AppleHDADriver Crash And Kernel NOT Finding Directories?

Apr 11, 2012

I have a mid 2010 mac mini, still under Applecare. I have been dealing with Apple support for 7 months now and cannot get a resolution to the problem other then their telling me it is software, not hardware. I consistently get errors indicating the AppleHDADriver crashes and goes to an error handler. This happens 100's of times a second. Along with this error I get an error stating the kernel is unable to find a directory. Both these errors show up in the console log under 'kernel errors' and happen daily.

The result of the problem seems to be the status bar/system clock freezes and doesn't update. The clock freeze occurs mainly when coming out of sleep, but has also happened durning full operation of the machine.

It seems no matter what software I install, or what vendor it is from or even what the software is used for, something crashes, the system slows down and freezes... It was two days ago the system started with an unresponsive mouse.

Any ideas he would be great... I am tired of trying to get the Apple 'senior advisor' to truly talk solutions. I lost 100's of hours when this problem first occurred as it started with Snow Leopard. When doing a clean install of Lion as directed by Apple support it was discovered the old time machine files were corrupt and couldn't be used to restore...

Those errors in the kernel have been there from the beginning... Across Snow Leopard, Snow Leopard clean install, Lion upgrade, Lion clean install and still those kernel errors are there consistent. This should indicate a hardware problem someplace and not software...

MacBook Pro :: Finding Total Users Of Snow Leopard 64bit Kernel

Apr 11, 2010

I know by default that Snow Leopard starts up in 32-bit kernel but anyone here boot into the 64-bit kernel? I think to do this you'd have to hold down 6 and 4 keys while booting.

By now almost all 3rd party apps are running 64-bit and all this time I've totally forgot about the 64-bit kernel!

I've just booted up to 64-bit kernel and all apps load instantaneously!

OS X :: Snow Leopard 32bit Versus 64bit Kernel - How To Boot It / Finding Supported Hardware

Aug 27, 2009

So, with Snow Leopard, there is a 32-bit kernel, and a 64-bit kernel. Correct?

As I understand it, it will boot into the 32-bit kernel by default, but if your hardware is supported, you can select the 64-bit kernel.

My question is - where is the list of supported hardware, and how do you select the 64-bit kernel?

My confusion comes from several posts and various articles which all say the first-gen aluminium iMac has a 32-bit EFI, and therefore can only boot into the 32-bit kernel. But I've just downloaded an app called Startup Mode Selector, which shows you your system config, and it says I have a 64-bit EFI.

MacBook Pro :: Snow Leopard Has A 32bit Kernel As The Default Like 64bit Kernel?

Aug 13, 2009

Yes you read that right. Your brand spanking new MBP will use a 32-bit kernel as default.

You can force 64-bit kernel but some of your hardware will not be working.

So all that marketing crap about the benefits of 64-bit etc are all B.S.

I don't want a million threads about how this will not effect the running of 64 bit apps, etc. because it will. Your 64-bit app will run but it will not be able to address more than 4Gb of RAM.

There are also many more advantages to having a 64-bit kernel.

OS X :: Can't Run .app Extensions

Aug 13, 2010

I'm running the most updated version of Snow Leopard on my iMac. I've recently purchased some add on planes for x-plane they were delivered in an installer with a .app extension. When I double click on them the icon does the usual animation to show it has responded to you clicking on it, but then nothing. It will not install or do anything at all, just sits there. I've tried restarting. I've been working with the vender and they are stumped so they just sent me a zip file of the plane for me to manually install, which I've done.

Has anyone ever experiences similar problems, is it some type of setting I might have changed thats prohibiting these from running??..................

OS X :: Why Extensions Not Installed Properly

Jul 26, 2010

I recently did an erase and install of Snow Leopard. After the install I used Migration assistant to restore all my files. Before it completed I got about 7 messages that extensions were not installed properly and need to be reinstalled. One of them had something to do with my Canon Printer and the other was for my Elgato TV Tuner. I'm not sure what the other extensions were. Is it normal for some extensions to not restore correctly after using Migration assistant?

Software :: Dealing With File Extensions

Jan 20, 2011

I am experienced in Excel VBA for the PC. I am finding my way around the Mac using Excel version 14.0.2. I am trying to rename files using Name oldpathname AS newpathname the files have .jpg and .pdf extensions. The files show up in Finder with and without the extension in the file name. I assume I will have to specify the entire file name including the extension. I am unsure what it means when I see files with and without the extensions in their names. On another but related subject, I have discovered the 31 character limit (truncated file names) in names as returned by the dir function. Does Name oldpathname as newpathname have the same problem?

OS X :: Split Files With Letter Extensions

Jan 14, 2011

I have a set of split files with letter extensions. They are named <filename>.iso.__a, <filename>.iso.__b, and so on. Additionally they continue on to <filename>.iso._aa to <filename>.iso._as. This further confuses me because a Mac will list the <filename>.iso.__a first but a PC will put the <filename>.iso._aa first so I am unsure which is the initial file. I haven't found software that will join them properly. Split and Concat stalls out at 4kb. MacHacha makes a full sized file but it won't mount. Stuffitexpander won't even try, and Ajoiner shades out all the files as they don't end in numbers. I also tried renaming all the files with numbers but this too failed.

OS X :: How Do I Check If I Have 64-bit Incompatible Extensions/applications

Sep 9, 2009

Just doing some pre-SL install research. I'm curious about running the kernel in 64-bit mode. I have a mid 2009 13" MBP so the hardware should be able to boot into the 64-bit kernel. I don't use a whole ton of 3rd party applications and not many external peripherals so I think I might be able to get away with k64.

But, is there a way for me to check for sure? How do I know if certain apps or peripherals/extensions are not 64-bit? If I click on the apps and use "Get Info" will that tell me? Perhaps there is a list somewhere similar to the SL compatibility wiki that tells people's experiences with 64-bit compatibility. What if I boot into k64 and try to run an incompatible item, will the OS tell me so, or just crash, or just not work, or what?

As far as peripherals:
iPod touch 2G
Mighty Mouse (bluetooth)
i1 Display2 colorimeter
Dell 2209WA
Ruahrc

Applications :: Safari 5 - Extensions / Search Bar

Jun 15, 2010

Two simple questions:

1) Does anyone know when, in particular, the extensions gallery will go live? Later this summer is a bit vague. I'm waiting on a few crucial extensions (e.g., AdBlock, WOT, Xmarks).

2) Concerning the Search Bar (Bing, Google, Yahoo!), will I be able to add additional search fields via the extensions gallery (provided someone creates them, of course)?

I presently use firefox and found the 'MyCroft Project' to be absolutely invaluable. It allows me to search common websites without having to navigate to them directly (url). If I can get this added capability, I will switch over for good!

Safari :: Won't Save Bookmarks Or Extensions

Apr 12, 2012

I'm using Safari 5.1.5 on a MacBook Pro. After using Chrome for a year I have switched back to Safari. I set up all my bookmarks & extensions and it worked great for a few days until I had to restart the computer. Then Safari opened up with only my OLD bookmarks, and no extensions! *This has happened twice now!!* Also, when I go the Extensions panel under Preferences, it says my extensions are "installed" yet they are nowhere to be found.

Is there something I need to do to SAVE my bookmarks and extensions, because there's no way I'm going to putter around re-creating them each time I reboot the computer.

Mac Pro :: Extensions Have Wrong Permissions_Corrupt System?

Apr 30, 2012

I am trying to see how to fix the permissions on my computer. I have ran the fix permissions from the Disk Utility until it says everything is fine. I have even booted from a Snow Leopard disk to run fix permissions and repair disk. Still having the same problem.  The problem is, that in the finder I still keep getting errors saying extension "x" could not be used because it was not installed correctly. The computer crashed while doing an update so I believe this to be what caused the problem. I have way to many applications to have to reinstall each one. I have the old extension folders for the Library and System (that I know are fine) but cannot figure out what to boot from that will show the old finder so I can replace them (and I obviously cannot replace them on an active system). Unfortuately all my latest TimeMachine BU have the corrupt system now too. I want to update to Lion but not with a corrupt system.

Safari :: Extensions Aren't Working In 5.1.7?

May 21, 2012

Since I upgraded Lion to version 10.7.4 and Safari to 5.1.7 my safari extensions won't work. These aren't exotic extensions here, we're talking about 1Password and Evernote. When I launch Safari, I get a message saying that the extensions don't work with this version of the browser. I removed the extensions and tried to reinstall only to get a message saying that there was an error when trying to install (a truly usefull message, I might add).

Thinking that this might be an issue with a specific extension (1Password), I contacted the developer. Over the course of a week or ten days, we went through a series of steps to try to resolve the problem. None of these steps resolved the issue, then suddenly, for no obvious reason, the extensions started working UNTIL I have to restart my computer when it was physically relocated. Upon restarting and relaunching Safari, I got the same old message -- the extension won't work. When I tried to reinstall, the "error when trying to install" message popped up.
