IMac (Intel) :: Installed SSD / Constant Fans / No HDD Temp Sensor

Dec 10, 2014

I've recently installed a Crucial M500 512 GB SSD into my 21.5" 2011 iMac. I've done this to quite a few iMacs, and am well aware that some have a temperature sensor on the factory-installed hard drive. This one, however, did not, and now that the SSD is installed, I'm getting constantly running fans.

The fans run whether it's booted from the internal SSD, an external FireWire HD, or even if it's sitting in Target Disk Mode or on the Boot Options screen, so I feel like it's hardware-related.

Mac :: Constant CPU Usage & High Fans Speed Temp On Black Santa Rosa MacBook

Mar 11, 2010

I only started noticing my fan running a bit on the fast side this evening after installing the new Safari 4.0.5 update. I looked at iStat Menus for temp and CPU. And I was seeing about 190 degrees F for CPU temp with lid closed running ext display. Also there was a constant usage of the cpu (about 30% User and 20% System). There's not one particular process I can see in Activity Monitor that acting out of the ordinary and using a lot of CPU. Just stuff like coreservicesd, WindowServer, launchd that are shuffling around and using about 1-4% of CPU.I ran repair disk permissions and verify disk. Verify Disk found errors and said I need to repair my Macintosh HD, which I have now done successfully.

IMac :: Controlling Max Temp Of Fans / Booting From External HDD

Nov 20, 2010

I have a 2007 Intel 24" iMac (Last of the white plastic editions) and I've recently had troubles with the 7600GT Graphics card. The computer would get strange artifacts all over the screen, before crashing. Unfortunately, it is out of Applecare, so I took it into a shop and had the card replaced. Upon receiving it back, they told me that they replaced the graphics card, but still found problems with it booting up inconsistently. After some testing, they realised it was the Hard Drive controller at fault, and put my harddrive in an external USB enclosure and booted it off that instead. This was an easier solution than replacing the entire logic board, they told me. (and they gave me the enclosure for free).

Now I've brought it home, and set it all up, only to find that the HDD fans are constantly spinning at 5600 RPM, which is deafeningly loud, even so over my room fan. I presume this is because there is no longer any hard drive controller/hard drive in there. I've installed SMC Fan Control, but to my dismay you can only set the minimum fan speed, and not the max. If possible, i'd like to set the max fan speed at a much lower rate, without needing to open up the iMac. So my questions are:
Is there a way I can set the max fanspeed for the HDD, or disable it since there isn't one in there anyway? And is there a better solution for booting my iMac OS onto an external HDD? (i.e. Should I look into buying a firewire 800 drive enclosure instead of this USB 2.0 one?)

MacBook Air :: Fans Run Even When Cpu Temp Has Lowered To 50C?

Apr 2, 2008

using Ichat the other day running a full screen chat, and I saw the temp of the CPU rise to about 65C and the fans started spinning up 6200.... That was understandable as the CPU was under load... but after I closed the ichat down, the CPU temp dropped down to about 50C but the fans stayed at 6200 for a long period of time. probably about 10 minutes or so... then they slowly crepted down to 2500.

MacBook :: Finding Maximum CPU Temp - How Many Fans Necessary

Jul 24, 2009

I have a fan utility that lists 2 fans. The "Left" fan is at 6204 rpm's, temp 81.4C The "Right" fan shows 0rpm's, temp -1C. Is this merely because the sensor is capable of recording two fan speeds or do I really have one malfunctioning fan? (which would explain the high cpu temp, if it applies).

A third sensor, a widget, records the same temp, with Heatsink A 70C and Heatsink B 64C. I realize all three sensors are getting their readings from the same spot; which one do I rely on?

MacBook :: Temp Go Up Absurdly While Running VisualHub / Fans Run Over 6000 Rpm And CPU Hit 92c

May 21, 2009

So I know there are a few other discussions regarding this subject but none of them are providing me with the info I'm looking for. I am looking to get a few responses on other MacBook Unibody's (Pros welcome too) temperatures when running intense programs (games, video conversion, etc.).

So here's why I am concerned. When running VisualHub in particular, my fans and temp go up absurdly. According to iStat, my fans are over 6000 rpm and my CPU temp hit 92c the other day. I shut it down bc I was having visions of my MB melting in front of me. I have even gone as far as propping up the back to allow for more air flow but that hasn't made any difference as long as I use pretty much any video conversion apps. Games (like Spore) make it hot, but not like this

I can find links to the previous MacBooks temps (which I had and this was never a problem) but nothing on the Unibody's. So please everyone, do share. Please include what apps you were running or if your MB's ever shut down from overheating.

I'm nervous to install the Firmware update 1.3. As I've heard from a lot of people the update has crashed their mac. I know it has to do with the fans and temp. My Mac book pro is running at 135 F at 2000rpm is this ok? Is it too overheated. Should I install the firmware I'm so nervous to install it just in case it breaks. Here's the rest of my specs...

MacBook Pro :: Hard Drive Installed With Motion Sensor - System Slowed Down

Aug 20, 2010

I replaced the hd in my 13" macbook pro with a western digital blue, 500gb. My concern is that the computer is not as snappy as I think it should be. I understand that I might have installed a hard drive with a motion sensor and that the motion sensor of the hd may conflict with the motion sensor of the mac itself and that might be the source of the slowdown? If so, which sensor should I deactivate, the mac's of the hard drive's?

IMac Intel :: Unable To Turn On System / No Fans Start Up And The Screen Does Nothing

Jan 25, 2007

My parents recently bought an iMac. Yesterday my mom was playing a game when the computer froze. Neither force quit or holding the power button was doing anything so in her frustration she unplugged the system. Today, after plugging in the system again, it won't turn on.

I press the power button on the side of the wireless keyboard and the green light on the keyboard turns on for about 3 sec and then starts flashing. No fans start up and the screen does nothing.

OS X :: CPU Running At Constant 45% Since 10.6.6 MBA Fans Running?

Jan 6, 2011

Since I updated to 10.6.6 earlier today I've noticed that the fan in my MBA (13" late-2010 model) is running constantly. This is rare -- I hardly ever hear it. I opened activity monitor and 'System' is using 45% CPU time, and it's pretty constant.

I have absolutely no clue why -- there's nothing in console to suggest it's doing some task, and I can't see any other hints. Apart from the noise and the heat (though don't get me wrong -- compared to my old MBP it's not really noisy or hot, but I liked it better when it was totally quiet and cold), it's also killing the battery -- 25% has gone in less than an hour.

IMac (Intel) :: Software For Printer Installed Incorrectly

Jun 24, 2014

I have moved an Early 2008 iMac with an Intel Core2 Duo 2.4 GHz processor and OS X version 10.9.3 to a summer home where I have an HP psc 2410 photosmart all-in-one Printer. I have attempted to load the driver for this printer using System Preferences/ Printers and faxes. When I select the + I find my psc 2400 printer listed when I select add I get the message: Some of the software for the printer is missing. You may have to reinstall the software to be able to successfully print. There is the option to continue. Selecting this button I get the message: The software for the printer was installed incorrectly. Please reinstall the software from the manufacturer. This printer was purchased when I had a Mac with a power PC chip and OS X version 10.4.1 which can not be loaded into the current computer. Is there a way to load the driver software that seems to be missing?

OS X :: Unable To Work With CPU Temp / Can't Control Temp

Nov 1, 2009

I was just adding some Quicklook plugins when my temps started to soar. I have restarted, repaired permissions, removed said plugins, and tried other accounts. Nothing is lowering the temps. Weird thing is is Activity Monitor is showing NOTHING using the processor nearly enough to jump my temps to 85 C with nothing running.

I'm "controlling" the issue for now by ramping my fans to full speed. Even with this I am hovering around 70 C...a good 10-15 C above what I am normally at (and was at 30 minutes ago).
*Note: Normally running fans at 6000rpm would give me temps in the mid to low 40 C range

MacBook Pro :: Won't Work With Temp / Temp Rise After 10.6.3

Apr 6, 2010

I have a MacBookPro5,4 2.53GHz with one fan and only the 9400M. After updating to 10.6.3 the operating temperature seems to have risen from about 43 degrees C to about 48. It has been getting warmer here in Japan so the ambient temperature is different but I still think this rise in temp. is due to the update. I have smcfancontrol installed and set to 2500rpm instead of the normal 2000, but it seems to be not enough to keep the temp. under control, as it did before the update. Any relatively hard use of the cpu and the temp goes up to 60 degrees.

IMac (Intel) :: Installed Yosemite And Now Lost Apps And Also App Store Does Not Open

Dec 8, 2014

Some weeks ago, I installed OS X Yosemite, as shown on my App Store, that was a "System Update available for my IMac 2009". Followed all the steps, normally and installed it as I did many other times ago (with the Maverick, Mountain Lion, OS X).

Just after the installation, I noticed that every single folder or program that depends on "Apple", stopped working.

Examples: Office package opens normally, so as Firefox. But, IPhoto, ITunes, Safari and App Store itself do not.

When trying to reinstall Yosemite or return to the one I had before, using App Store became impossible. Even the "Apple Icon" on the top left corner does not work. I click, it flashes, just IF it was ready to open, but nothing happens, seams that have something stopping the "loading process" of the software.

Way To Show Just Ambient Temperature Sensor Reading On An IMac?

May 12, 2012

Is there a very simple way to show just the ambient temperature sensor reading on an iMac? Not for geeky or engineering purposes. Just to know the temp that the machine and the human are in. iStat widget shows it but really tiny, buried in all the other data, and only if you launch Widgets.Ideally, it would just work in the background and the temperature would show up in the menu on the right side. Maybe next to the time. Alternatively, as a little floating window on the desktop.Yep, just want to see the room temperature using the iMac thermometer.

Intel Mac :: Constant Wifi Drop & Disconnect?

Mar 9, 2012

My one month old iMac does not maintain an interent connection for very long. Sometimes it stays connected for <maybe> an hour, but  MORE often it drops either the wifi signal all together or just stops connecting to the internet... when it does seem to have a connection it is VERY slow.

My solution: turn off Wifi wait a few seconds and turn it back on... which is very annoying, but that fixes it.

I have the latest software across the board. I'm running wifi on Time machine. My signal is strong. I have a Powerbook and iPad that connects to it without issues (for a couple of years its been fine until this iMac problem).

I've been looking for information on internet but I couldn't find anything conclusive.I have tried a trick in the System Preferences > Mouse > Double click speed, but it hasn't changed anything (I can go extreme slow or quick, same thing happens).

I have a Magic Mouse, a random and ultra super plain Logitech mouse (wired) and a common wireless Logitech mouse; the problem is the same for all mice. I also tried my roomate's mouse, and it does the same thing.

when I delete email I delete 2 of them. Opening a new tab? Here you go 4 of them. Clicking on a document? Oh no you can't rename it and it opens. Have an important text to type? it's impossible de move the cursor without selecting an entire word or phrase or row. It took me 3 hours to clic on "Categories - Using your iMac Intel" because the box was instantly checked-unchecked.

It stops if I put the computer in sleep mode or turn it off, but it starts back up  the moment I turn it back on again. It sounds like it is coming from the bottom of the screen near the speakers. I have tried adjusting the brightness and volume, but to no avail. I also tried lifting the computer off the desk to see if it was just vibration, but that did not make a difference either.

These guys seem like they know what they are doing - but enough is enough - I know in Apple's literature they mention that only 2 and 4 gig upgrades are possible - but they said the 8 gigs just came out
