Im after swapping my original one for one that burns dvd's aswell as cd's,
I just inherited a Powerbook G4 17" as my work computer. Model number is A1085. It's the 1.5 ghz I believe. Anyway, it has one problem ? the delete key is broken off. Not only that, but the little rubber spring under the key is also gone. Is it possible for me to replace the key, and the rubber nub, without having to buy an entire new keyboard? Any suggestions on where to get a new keyboard if that is not possible? Best price I can find is $85. I'd hate to have to spend that much (or have work spend that much), for a single key.
I work at a newspaper, and I write stories. No delete key is a big problem.
My girlfriend has a 12" G4 Powerbook that she claimed was getting really hot. I noticed it was as well, so I installed iStat Pro and saw that the fan was spinning at 0 RPM. So obviously something is wrong. I read a few posts on people having problems with the logic board, which would also cause the fan not to work. However, the computer runs fine, the fan just doesn't turn on when it gets hot. I haven't (and don't plan to) let it get so hot that it would shut itself off or burst in to flame or whatever happens. I understand it's out of Applecare, but I would prefer to fix it myself on the cheap. I'm perfectly capable and willing to replace the fan, but before I crack it open I would like to know if there is a simple way to see if my problem is simply a dead $30 fan, or a $500 logic board.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just bought a Powerbook G4 off of Clist. The previous owner replaced the screen with a higher resolution screen from a newer Powerbook. The display looks great, except that it doesn't fill the whole screen. There is a long group of colored lines on the right side, and the bottom starts to show the top of the display (it looks almost tiled and shows the screen again on the bottom). I'm guessing that this is just a formatting issue, but I'm not sure how to correct it.

As many of you may have experienced, my MBP disc drive has died. (Model of my laptop is MacBook Pro 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (15.4-inch)) It wont read anything, burn anything, just spins and spits discs back out. Was just wondering if anyone had any experience of putting a new drive in? I've found a load of info on upgrading hard drives but i can't find much on replacing the disk drives.

View 8 Replies View RelatedMy previous iMac 27" had a hard drive fail this week and I got a replacement (I guess they didn't want to wait for a replacement drive to come in, who knows). Problem is, this hard drive also makes the ticking noises, although not quite as loud or as frequent, and it also makes a louder whirring noise than I've heard on a Mac in a long time.So I'm a little bit skeptical about this hard drive as well, and I'm considering replacing it. What is a good option that will be quiet and reliable? I don't want to spend a lot of money, so solid state is probably not an option. That said, I don't need a ton of space, 500GB to 1TB would probably suffice (the current drive is the 1TB, it's the base level 27" iMac).

Does any combo or superdrive work that are the original specs (like the combo drive being 24/12/8)? I tried looking online for one, but with no luck. Does any one know a good place to buy one from for pretty cheap?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to find a definite answer, but I've found some conflicting opinions. I have the first generation macbook, and my hard drive finally died. I want to replace it with a bigger hard drive. Can I put ANY 2.5" SATA hard drive in my 1st gen macbook? Can I put a 3.0gb/s or will only a 1.5gb one work? I think I read that the 1st macbook only supports 1.5gb, but I was wondering if the 3gb would still work.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have just got a new 17" i7 2.66 UMBP. It comes with a 500GB Hard Drive but I would like to upgrade it to one of the newer 1TB ones.
My reasoning is to have not only more space but create a partition so I can run both OSX & Windows.
I am not sure which brands are more reliable than others & who offers the best warranty or back up service. I would want the fastest & quietest one available as long as it will definitely fit inside the notebook. Reliability & good customer service from the brand is also important as I gather my Applecare will only cover factory installed parts?
Which brand & models should I be looking at and which do you all recommend? I am not sure but I think I need to ensure that any replacement drive does not conflict with the notebooks built in sudden motion sensor?
Okay so i have the powermac M5183, I just got it and im going to be doing some overhauling ive already overclocked the processor and that worked wonders, now im on to my next step, I have no problem identify what kind of hard drive it is and the size, the only part i get confused about is when i think what the biggest hard drive i can put in, i would like to put a 320gig in or at least 250. But google says that on some of the powermacs you can't exceed 128 gig's. So i turn you you guys, is the model i have going to work with a 250/320? or am i
just going to have to install a 120 gig?
My superdrive does not burn DVD's regardless of media or application. It fails every time. It reads but doesn't write. Firmware is up to date. I've used Toast, iDVD and Disk Utility. No luck. My AppleCare has expired so looking for an external DVD drive. Will the MacBook Air Superdrive work on my old MacBook Pro running 10.7.3?

I have a Power Mac G5 Quad 2.5GHz circa jan 2006 and the hard drive is making the dieing cry already. I have a carbon copy on an external firewire of my system and am looking to replace my drive which I know is a Diamond max 10 250gb sata. My difficulty is I don't know what to put in! . I have seen Maxtor DiamondMax 21 - Hard drive - 320 GB - internal - 3.5" - SATA-300 - 7200 rpm - buffer: 8 MB but is this compatible with my machine, or would you choose something else and so improve on this?

I have a Mac Mini, running OS X and for ages I have been using an external drive for transferring pictures and videos between friends and family and for backups of a few documents for work etc. I have never had any trouble using the drive and it has always worked OK.
The drive is an unknown brand, but for a few years it has worked with no problems.
I took the drive round to my girlfriends house to transfer some pictures and I lost my cable somewhere between my house and hers. The cable supplied with the drive was a USB 2.0, and went from USB A male one end to 2x USB A male on the other end. One of which I would use to transfer files over. The other just seemed useless and I never plugged it in to any USB port.
I replaced the cable with a single USB 2.0 cable and the drive powered up, all lights flashing, but nothing appeared on screen. I tried it on my housemates laptop, and my brothers laptop, both running Windows Vista. The laptops both installed drivers, and told me that everything was OK - good to go - but then nothing appeared on those either.
Does anyone have any idea what is wrong with the hard drive? I assume it is the type of cable that I have bought, as it was working fine before I lost the cable and replaced it with a single USB lead?
I'm thinking of upgrading my Time Capsule 500GB to 1TB and I'd like some recommendations on replacement drives. I've heard Western Digital do a 'green' low-power drive, but I think they're only 5400 rpm. I'd like something that is quiet, reliable and low-powered, but I don't want it to be any slower than the one I already have. I'd prefer WD or Seagate because I've always found them to be the most reliable...

They said they'd do it for $378 (Yikes!). I found a lot of internal hard drives on the net and instructions on how to install them, but will this fix my problem? For those that have done this should I pay the money to have it done or give it a shot doing it myself??? (This laptop is my backup but I would like to not screw it up too badly)

View 6 Replies View Relatedafter 4 years my ibook g4 14" has a problem. my hard drive needs to be replaced. i took it to the genius bar yesterday and they gave me a referal to a store in my area that is certified to work on macs... but they don't sell hard drives in-house since they just started up a few weeks ago. does anyone have a suggestion for a decent replacement internal hard drive? i'm not looking for anything high-end. i just need a cheap, reliable drive to get me through about another year when i can get a new mac. if this matters much... i do use my ibook for a small amount of video editing, graphic design, etc... but only when work has to come home w/ me.
*the guys at the repair place did suggest a few... but they were all in the $250-$350 range... i was hoping to keep it around $150 or lower since i've been doing fine w/ my 40gb for 4 years now and i have 2 externals that total 1.75 tb. they said i could find some for that price elsewhere... but they only ordered from one place when they needed to... and none were available (in my $ range) there*
