IMac :: Protecting - APC Power Conditioner And UPS?
Aug 19, 2010I have an APC H15 Power Conditioner and just bought an iMac 27'' and want to protect it against power failures. I was wondering if I could connect the power conditioner to the wall outlet and then a UPS on the conditioner. The iMac would be connected to the battery backup outlet in the UPS. Also, IF this can be done, in which outlet should I connect the UPS on the APC H15; Digital Filter or High Current filter?

Feb 13, 2010Dual 2ghz Power PC G5 with Leopard 10.5.8Recently had it in for a repair, not with Apple (that expired a longggg time ago) because it would only turn on intermittently. They fixed this problem, citing bad components and also replaced the broken optical drive. However when they gave it back to me it was incredibly loud, they stated that they had to reconnect a fan and that was probably what caused the power problem in the first place. I'm pretty sure though that I had disconnected it unwittingly about a week after the power problem started when I opened it up to change the battery... believing that may be the problem at the time.

Dec 11, 2014Few days ago I used my Buffalo external HD and it was working fine. Today I plugged it in and it didn't show up on my desktop as before. It's running tho cause I could see the light from it and can hear it been reading but the MacBook is not showing it on the desktop and it has a lot of my important stuff.

The system tells us "No Driver Update Needed for this System", and will not allow driver to be installed. Can anyone advise if the current driver is automatically installed or provided by Apple Updates. If not can you provide proper instructions on how to properly update the driver. After recovering all my data and running Tiger's Disk Utility to reformat the drive (Erase) question is:
How do I get see the drive on the Desktop?
The drive appears on the Finder Sidebar but how do I get the icon to appear on the desktop, same principle as an alias I guess.

Oct 9, 2007I am a photographer. I use 4 X 1TB LaCie external hard drives to store my digital images. 2 as masters for different business segments and 2 as their back-ups. They are daisy-chained using Firewire 800. Recently my G5 has stopped recognizing one of the drives. Is there any way to get my machine to re-recognize the missing drive? I have rewired the four drives to see if there was a problem with the cabling, but this does not appear to be the case. I am coming up to the 1 year warranty period on this drive and need to get it back to LaCie if there is no other solution.

"This can't be right" was what went through my mind, but is it? There surely must be a way to turn on a MBP when it is attached to an Apple Cinema display and a USB Apple Keyboard while in the closed clamshell state. Surely there's a key-combination.

Mar 16, 2012I am going to buy a new 17" MacBook Pro soon and I've been doing research on how to customize it when I get it. I want to install my own SLC SSD as the internal drive because it's cheaper and has a longer life expectancy. Because of the limited capacity of SSDs these days, I am also going to be getting an external HDD to keep all my data that would not benefit greatly from SSD speeds, as well as for backups of everything on the internal SSD.
I wanted this external HDD to meet three criteria:1TB capacity7200rpm speed2.5" size, so that I can use it without needing to plug it into a power socket There aren't many options to choose from that meet those requirements. In fact, I only found one candidate, the “Seagate Constellation.2”. It looks like a good set of specs and Seagate is a reputable hard disk maker I've read, so I'm just about ready to buy one. My only point of concern is whether it can be powered and operated solely over FireWire, or if I would have to use a power adapter.
So my question is, can the 17" MBP (Late 2011) supply enough watts/volts/amps over FireWire 800 in order to power this Seagate disk? (Sorry for rambling too much) I have looked at the spec sheet and read up on IEEE 1394, i.e. FireWire, and I wasn't able to come up with a definitive answer, and I'm not even confident about how these electronics operate (specifically if the watt/volt/ampere requirements have to be met precisely or if they can go over or under a little, or a lot). I hope someone helps me out here.

May 17, 2012I just purchased a new iMac, System 10.7.4. When I tried plugging in my old WD external with a newly purchased Firewire cable (couldn't attach with the cable that came with the drive originally), the drive didn't show up on my desktop. I tried shutting down and restarting, thinking that would help, but it did not. I then removed it and placed it back on my G5 Tower and it works fine. I am running system 10.5.8 on my old mac, just as an FYI. I need this drive as my time machine backup is on it.

Dec 7, 2007Could anyone recommend an external (FireWire 800) Hard Drive that they're using without issues with a Power Mac G5 (mine is a Dual Processor 2.3)?? I bought a couple of WD My Book Studio Edition but have no end of problems on FW800, and looking around here so is everyone else. LaCies seem to have similar problems, plus my own experiences in selling these and seeing FW ports falling off the enclosure's board, etc., puts me off them. Maxtors seem to have different issues and the new brown and orange Seagates are too fugly to even consider. So, anyone recommend a solution (250-500GB) that works fine with FW800 on a dual PMG5??

I was unable to partition or erase anything on the external hard drive from the PowerPC, because I kept getting an input/output error. I followed the same process and was successful at establishing partitions on my MacBook. Now, I plugged my external into the PowerPC to copy the media files, but it isn't recognizing the partitions on the external harddrive! What did I do wrong?

Dec 19, 2007My Maxtor 500 external hard drive has suddenly stopped appearing on my desktop. My other external drives appear. I've tried hooking the drive to my MacBook Pro with the same results. The drive however, seems 'active'. The light on the front of the drive does its usual flashing routine when plugged into a new machine. I've never had a crashed drive before. Does it sound like this is what has happened, or does anyone have a clue as to what I should do?

Power Mac G5 :: LaCie External Drive - Slow Data Transfer Rate
Nov 5, 2007I have used the disk for a number of years - all appeared to work fine - I am now backing up my data and only get Very slow transfer speed using firewire 800 - 2 hrs to transfer 1.36 Gb. Disk is connected to a Dual 1.8 Ghz Power PC G5 with firewire 800 - another d2 disk is connected to it with firewire 400 and I have just connected a Maxtor disk using firewire 400 to that. I have tried Updated the firmware (it did require it), tested the device alone on both 800 and 400 connections both slow. Restarted everything and used disk repair to check and repair the disks - repaired permissions on the startup disk.
Connected all the devices together again | LaCie 800 - LaCie 400 - and Maxtor 400. It sends data to all the other devices fast (~ 3 min for 1.6 Gb) through the LaCie 800 disk connection!, but does not send data to the LaCie 800 fast at all. Tested the other devices alone as well - they are all fast. Have also performed a TechTool Pro Ver 4 test on the the disk (Disk type ST325082 3A 232.89 Gb LaCie d2 External LUN0 revision 3.03) Passed the surface scan, disk controller and read write tests. Is the disk failing?

I've heard some notebooks dont give enough juice to certain usb ports and would require a y-splitter to use two usb cables in order to power it (im guessing netbooks would probably suffer from this). I remember trying to use a 2.5" lacie external with the orange rubber padding around it, connected it to the front port of a Powermac G5 1.8ghz and it wouldnt mount, unless it was connected to one of the usb ports on the back of the machine.

Now the external hard drive I'm using needs to be plugged in to a power source, now if I transfer all my music/movies to the external drive and also have my iTunes automatically download everything to the drive will I be able to copy my movie files back into my computers hard drive when I wan to be able to watch them on plane trips or would I be better off using a external hard drive that doesn't need a power source so I can just take it with me?
