Intel Mac :: "to Town" From Time To Time, And Upgrade/update?
Jun 18, 2012
I promise to do my best :-)Could someone help me understand the difference between Â
1. An iMac 27" ( the computer ), a keyboard, a trackpad etc Â
2. An Apple screen 27" plus the most advanced MacBook Pro Â
As a matter of fact, I live on board an expedition vehicle, and mainly visiting the middle of nowhere. [URL]..How would I do the updates of a heavy iMac computer ?with the MacBook pro, I could go "to town" from time to time, and upgrade/update.
Regarding the work I do with my photos, is there a big difference between 1. and 2.ps that question might be strange (or stupid ) the fact is that, I don't have an Apple Store as a neighbor

Ever since I updated to 10.6.1 I've had the following problems:
- Time Machine does not work at all with my Time Capsule. When it attempts to back up my data, Time Machine gets hung up with a status of "Making backup disk available..." and the icon in the menu bar just spins forever (the status appears in the menu bar icon's menu). I also cannot enter Time Machine; it gets hung trying to connect to the Time Capsule and I have to cancel it. Finder then takes up 100% CPU and I have to power down by holding in the power button (shutting down from the Apple menu doesn't work).
- I store my iTunes library in a folder called Music under the Data folder on the Time Capsule. When I open iTunes, it prompts me to choose my iTunes library. When I do, it starts to load the list of albums, then iTunes locks up and I must force quit it. This also causes my machine to not be able to shut down or restart from the Apple menu.
Oddly enough I can still access the Data folder from Finder with no issues. I just wanted to put this out there in case other people are having similar problems. It's pretty frustrating as all this worked fine before the 10.6.1 update.

I have an early 2006 iMac with 10.5.8, and I am having hard drive problems. I want to reformat my drive, then install 10.6. Can I do that, then restore my files with Time Machine? Will it restore applications?

I just did and automatic update that consisted of about 6 items, now my external hard drive is not even recognized! Long story short, Time Machine can not find my external to do a backup. I have already done all the unplugging and restarting and searching for the disk... Nothing! my external is Lit and seemingly functioning.Â

I have an iMac running the latest version of Lion (10.7.4) and which I have upgraded to a one terabyte hard drive and full memory capability. I back up to a My Book 2 terabyte external hard drive using Time Machine. My iMac is often very sticky, though I've done most of the diagnostics I know of and preferences etc. are seemingly all OK and fcuk -fs gives a positive result! The Mac is often hard to wake from sleep and in particular seems to spend a lot of time backing up very-very slowly, with the result that it frustratingly seems to be backing up most of the time with the consequent effects on using other programs. Also the whole thing seems to grind to a halt after a hard days work with quite a few applications open. I'm wondering what can be causing this and what I can do to overcome this very frustrating and debilitating problem?

I updated with the latest Lion patch yesterday and since then Entourage has either hung or taken a very long time to update from our 2003 Exchange server (I have MS Office 2011 but as you're probably aware, there are issues integrating with a 2003 Exchange server). how this might be fixed, short of updating both our 2003 Windows Server to Windows Server 2008 x64 and Exchange to 2010 so I (the only Mac user out of 85 staff) can use Outlook 2011?

I have a MacBook pro mid 2012 and I’m not sure if it’s okay to upgrade both RAM and SSD at the same time or I should upgrade one at a time?

Usually pick up a new mac tower ~4yrs or so and now that im halfway through usually more or less max it to the hilt to last me. Lately havnt had the time focus on trends of who's putting out the most rock solid drives, ram, and what the best setups are...so would appreciate some feedback on my simple upgrade project for the home office...My usage is primarily heavy photography in pshop, lightroom, etc and moderate HD video editing in FCP.
First off think its time finally replace my wrt54g linksys router with one that supports NAS via usb, firewire, or ethernet... Eyeballing the 610n. Goal is to backup my data via time machine over the network now.
So for this effort i'd like to pick up 2 external 1.5tb or 1tb drives here in order to support the time machine backups, suggestions? Currently have a couple seagate 500gb externals in raid 1 via usb directly into my tower for time machine backup purposes and they are low on space. I would most likely raid 1 these as well for redundancy. What's the deal on raid 5 & 10, do the basic osx disc utilities support that yet?
Current spec on the quad core mac pro tower is the stock 250gb drive used only for the OS and apps, plus a couple 500gb seagate drives.Like to pull the 2 internal seagate drives and replace with 4 of the most reliable 1tb or 1.5tb internal drives on the market, seagate & wd have usually treated me right. Like to run raid 0 on each of the 2 pairs internally for speed so id essentially have about ~2 tb of daily workable space. Are the 2tb drives there yet in terms of reliability & value?
Lastly as for ram, risers a & b both are paired with 512 in each slot for 2gb total. Thinking 8gb would probably be sufficient for my purposes. Where are the best ram deals currently for the quality stuff.Budget isnt too much of an issue, prefer to pay few bux more quality instead of crap though im a frugal spender. Figure ~100-200ea for the internal drives, bit more for the externals, ~300 for couple 4gb ram modules,~200 for the router...

i just upgraded my MBP13 with 4gb and a 500 Hitachi drive. the process went smoothly. i didnt quite understand the time machine OSX reinstall process, i was mostly afraid of having to re-install every other programs. So i went the easy way and downloaded super duper to clone my drive and did the switch.
it use to take around 25-30sec to boot. now it takes more like 45+. I also noticed a few setting had changed after the upgrade. namely, little snitch (i think..) was opening a window showing me inbound transfers, my desktop image was reset and other small things like that. is it all normal? is there anything i should do to speed the boot time?
another note, there is a cd in the drive at boot, but its always there as it was when the boot time was faster. i just dont have anything to put it in so it seems like the best option to always keep it there.

I am upgrading the drive I use for time machine for one of a larger capacity. I do not wish to lose my previous backups, can I just copy them over to the bigger HDD, so time machine will recognize them and continue it's backup sequence. Or is there another way I need to do it?

My last Backup was on May 9th, about the time we recieved our Software Update. Since then it gets to a certain point in the Backup, and just hangs for hours and hours. For example, it will get to 17.22 out of 20.6 GB on the backup. I leave it be, and come back two hours later...and it's still at 17.22 out of 20.6 GB of the bckup. I have no idea what's causing it. I think it's one particular file it won't backup. First off, how do I find out which one, and second, has this been happening to anyone else since the update?

On one of my Macs I've still Snow Leopard running and I'm using Time Machine for backups.Â
Question: After upgrading to Lion on that Mac, will I be able to continue "incremental" Time Machine backups OR will I have to make a complete Time Machine backup of the entire hard drive?Â

Macbook Pro 13" mid-2009, 10.7.5 Lion..I just swapped out my 160GBÂ HDD with a 250GB SSD on my MBP. When I booted up, I pressed Command-R to try to get into recovery mode but all it does was showing a gray folder with a question mark on it.Â
I had previously backed up my HDD with time machine. My original HDD is no longer available because I tried to upgrade to Mavericks (since the command-R was not working) and upon restarting my MBP was locked with system pin code (that is another nightmare all by itself)Â
What are my options besides getting a 10.7 Lion CD from the apple store and try to boot it up that way? and then restore from time machine? Any other way I can get into receovery mode?Â

I have looked into this a lot already. It is to much that Time Machine backs up every single hour! It would be nice to set it to something like 3 or 5 hours. I have tried a 3rd party app to do this, but... If my computer was off or asleep when it was supposed to back up, it would get an error. It would not just do the backup when i turned it on or when it came out of sleep like stock Time Machine does. I have also seen a way to change the time incraments in the Terminal.(I am very good with it, not a noob) I have tried this and it screws up time machine completely. Maybe it does not work with the newest OS X. By the way... I have a 2010 MacBook Pro, got it 2 months ago.
Does anyone know a solid 3rd party app, that will work seamlessly. Or has anyone changed the time in Terminal and are currently using something different than 1 hour. There is a lot of examples online, but I would like the codeing that you literally used.

I have always backed up all of my important data on to external Hard Drives/CD's/DVD's etc manually however to make life easier, I have now decided to start using Time Machine (should have done so a long time ago I know). I am also about to upgrade my iMac from Snow Leopard to Lion. My question is, should I perform a Time Machine back up before the upgrade or would it make sense to upgrade to Lion first & then perform the Time Machine back up.Â
The only advantage I can see by running Time Machine before the upgrade is in case there is an error/corruption in the upgrade process but having never used TM

Hi, ever since the last update for time capsule, I have been getting really poor reception and sometimes it says I have full bars of reception and then can't load any pages. It's really annoying, does anyone know anything I can do? Is there a way I can downgrade to the previous firmware?

I have a mid-2008 (June) MBP 15". Just upgraded to SL last night. I am having a serious issue with time machine. I've been using it with the same external HD since I bought my mac last year. No issues up until I installed SL last night. This morning (my first backup since upgrading), time machine started backing up (~ 9Gb) but just stops at around 300Mb. The clock keeps spinning, but there is no change in the amount backed up.
I'm reading that other folks are having this issue as well. Has anyone figured something out? I've run disk repair (nothing found), restarted my mac & external HD (several times each), and cancelled and restarted the time machine backup (several times). Each time it freezes at a different amount (i.e. 34Mb, 284.2Mb, etc...).

How do I restore my contacts that were lost during Mavericks upgrade? All of my contacts are gone. My version of Contacts in Time Machine is 7.1, which can't be opened in Mavericks (version 8.0). I know they are in there somewhere. I also don't use ICloud, so I can't find them there.

I have a 21" iMac and a Mac Mini, both of which I upgraded to Maverick a week ago. Since then, I have not been able to get Time Machine to backup. I can connect to the disk through my network, but Time Machine does not recognize it exists. I have gone through User and Groups, I have checked everything I can think of through System Preferences, and nothing has worked, including Sharing. I have another computer and am able to backup it, after programming the mini.

I have 2 computers, an iMac and a Macbook Pro.I have done a clean install on both of them, but it would be much easier for me to be able to have it where whenever I make a change on my desktop, my laptop is changed too, and vice versa.
Is there any way that I can update the 2 computers whenever I want so that it updates my laptop when I make a change to my desktop? I can't think of a good way to explain what I mean, but here is basically what I want to happen:
1. I turn on my iMac and make a document with Pages, download some music with iTunes, and play and save a game of Half-life with Crossover.
2. I turn on my Laptop, and it automatically retrieves all the changes from my desktop, and downloads the document, music, and the game file.
3. Still on my laptop, I delete an application, download a PDF, and change my desktop.
4. I go back to my desktop, and it automatically deletes the application, downloads the PDF, and changes the desktop.
That is sort of what I want to be able to happen, not exactly like that, but you get the idea.

Was looking at the buying guide but didn't see anthing on the Time Capsule as to when it was updated last and how soon the next one might be. I will be buying one in the coming months and figured with the dropping prices of Hard Drives that maybe an updated Time Capsule might come out with a lower price
