PowerPC :: G4 Smells Like Burnt Plastic

Nov 7, 2008

My powermac g4 digital audio 733mhz smells like burnt plastic (or what appears to be toxic fumes) whenever its powered on. Everything works fine when using it, except the smell. I've since stopped using it, since it really is hard for the nose and head. I was wondering what are the causes for that smell. If no solution is found, it might possibly be taken back for recycling or whatever they do with old computers at the university.

MacBook Pro :: Magsafe Adaptor Not Working Fine / Smells Pretty Warm Like Burning

My Magsafe adaptor is so hot right now that it almost burns me to hold it. It also smells pretty warm, like a heater. This can't be normal can it?

Should I be alarmed? My 13.3" UMBP is only 3 months old...

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Newly Purchased Kingston 19-in-1 Card Reader Is Not Recognized By The Mac?

May 30, 2012

I just received my Kingston 19-in-1 card reader and connected it directly to the back of my iMac (iintel) running on OS X Lion 10.7. It did not show up. I checked Disk Utility and it shows the following:

Info EOS Digital
Name: EOS Digital (my Canon DSLR)
Type: Partition
Mount Point: Not mounted
File System: MS-DOS (FAT 32)

[code]....

I am positive the problem is due to the MS-DOS (FAT 32) file system (my other laptop is a PC running on Windows Vista), but I  don't know how to fix this. Since i did not want to lose any files on my CF card, I took a blank formatted card (formatted in camera) and took 2 photos. When connecting the reader to the Mac it did not register.

I have a Sandisk 8-in-1 card reader which worked just fine on the PC, and the Kingston reader also works on the PC (after i tried all the above ). I have read other forum discussions whee people say that the Kingston card reader works on their Mac By the way, I checked on two Apple Stores to try and get tech support and got "voice mail jail" which is most disappointing. I suspect this is Apple company policy forcing me to make an appointment (which I am willing to do, but for heavens sake, don't cut me off on the phone!)

MacBook :: Palmrest Getting Real Warm / Gets Warm During Processing

Jan 3, 2009

On my second macbook and notice a difference in this one as opposed to the first one (although in all fairness i didn't use my first one all that much as i had to return it because of bad vibrations). I have no programs running and all I'm doing is lightly browsing the web (craigslist, macrumors, gamefaqs). My temps are 42C and approx. 1801rpm. I think this is normal, but my palmrest really warms up. Not to the point I can not use the notebook...just wondering if this is normal...

MacBook Pro :: Stop Hinge Plastic From Creaking / Black Plastic Hinge Cover Is Cheap And Creaks

Feb 15, 2007

Build-quality wise the unibodies are really as perfect as I've ever experienced any machine to be. Simply amazing. BUT, the black plastic hinge cover is cheap and creaks as soon as I grab the computer or open the display. I opened her up to see if there was anything I could do to reinforce it or something, but I didn't want to mess with it.

Quite a few seem to have this 'issue' and I thought maybe somebody has figured out a solution?Such a shame on an otherwise perfect machine. I would have preferred the same kind of rubbery plastic that was on the old generation MBP

MacBook :: Charger Getting Extremely Hot - Smells Bad

Aug 18, 2009

My macbooks charger, its a white macbooks charger, which is the same watts as my unibodies, is getting extremely hot when I use it on my unibody. It never was this hot and IDK why it is like this. It smells like a hot iron when I smell it up close and I'm scared. I'm running vista on my unibody with 2gb ram and I know that vista support is crappy for macs even with boot camp, so it gets hot alot but I don't know why its doing this. My mom is using my unibodies charger for her white macbook.

PowerPC :: Making Whirring Sounds And Smells

Apr 15, 2008

You know that electrical smell ... well that's what is coming from the cabinet in which I have my Mac. It's not pungent or burning, but it's there. It may just be the DSL modem that Verizon recently sent me because that did have an odor like that when we hooked it up. Most importantly though, the computer is making a whirring sound, almost like a heavy hum when it's turned on. As it runs it quiets down though. It isn't loud but it is noticeably there and it's been doing it for a long time. I'd say for about a year and nothing bad has happened .. yet. I'm just wondering if I should put any more money into it. It needs more RAM to put Tiger on it and run it more efficiently but that shouldn't be a problem. I just wonder if I should abandon ship or stick with it. It's been a great machine and isn't beat up at all. I've rarely used it over the years.

MacBook Pro :: Not Reading Burnt Cd / Dvd R

Nov 20, 2008

My macbook pro cd drive seems to be acting up. It doesn't like to read any of my burnt cd/dvd-r, but it reads 'proper' and blank DVDs just fine (by 'proper' i mean like DVD movies, Apple Tiger OSX dvd, and such).. The discs that it refuses to read are fine, no scratches or anything. It takes the disc in, spins and tries to read it for about 3 times and spits it out. I've tried using those DVD lens cleaner discs with brushes on them.. but they didn't help. I've also tried resetting my PRAM (and the other one where you hold the power button for 5 seconds while shut down), and that didn't help either.. If it matters, my superdrive details are: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D: Firmware Revision:KCV9 My machine is bit over 2 years old, so it's no longer on warranty/AppleCare. Has anyone encountered this before?

MacBook Pro :: CDs Burnt With PC Suddenly Not Readable?

Nov 22, 2010

I've suddenly come across a problem, which I'm not sure I understand at all... My Macbook Pro has stopped being able to read PC burnt data CDs. CDs that have previously worked. I get the "The disk inserted was not readable by this computer" error. They work in my old PC laptop, BUT, I booted up in Boot Camp on my Macbook Pro and it only saw the CD as a blank CD, so I'm guessing it's not an OS problem.

Just to make things even more clear, PC burnt audio CDs STILL work, and Mac burnt data/audio CDs still work. So it also doesn't seem to be a problem with the optical drive itself.

IMac :: LCD Looks Burnt - Grey Blotches On Screen?

Dec 5, 2010

hopefully will be able to get some info on here as to what's up with my iMac. Over the last day or so I noticed my screen looking dirty, and have just left it. I went to clean it today and noticed that the "dirt" is under the glass, and on the lcd itself. The only way I can describe it is if you were to burn a candle with a bit of glass behind it, the glass would get like a grey/black residue on it, that's what it looks like. But, the problem is, it isn't uniform, it is in blotches, and it actually looks kinda like fingerprints. Like if you were to put your finger on the glass of the candle, it would take away the residue and leave an oval clean spot? That is just at the top left of the LCD, at the top right, it looks more like dirty water marks on the LCD it's self, again, the same colour.

It is only in the top half of the LCD I am noticing this problem. I wouldn't say it is yellowing, but is this a common problem with iMac LCDs?

I'm currently looking for the charger for my camera, but I'm not even sure if that will show it. My iMac is only 2 months old, if that, and I'm worried as to what might be the cause. Does anyone have any idea what could have caused this?
