Intel Mac :: How To Measure The Current/power

May 3, 2012

After I moved from my old house to my new appartment, my 24" late 2006 iMac instantly started making this annoying high pitch noise.  I've tracked it to coming from the area around the hard drive fan.

I believe there might be a problem with the ground connection in the electricity system in the building.  Is there a way to measure the current running through my dear iMac?

ps.: also see my previous post where I tried to figure out what might be the problem.

Power Mac :: Performance Differences Between The Various Current Models?

Apr 8, 2012

I am interested to try and replace my old school G5 from 2001 with something fast enough and enough memory to handle Final Cut or Premiere applications, and at the same time not cost me an arm and both legs. The local MacStore is selling warranteed refurbished units of recent vintage that are of varying prices. The problem is that it's been so long since i bought the first G5 that I am not aware of alll the performance diffences between the various current models like "Harpertown", "Nehalem", etc. I don't game or anything like that. I just want to make quality video productions and have a CS5 Photoshop capability.Where do I start? Is it a good idea to buy a refurbised unit?

MacBook :: Measure Your Pro's Temperature?

May 20, 2010

I see people stating the temperatures of their MBPs, fairly often in this forum. How do you do that?

By the way, I got my new 17" i7 MBP, yesterday, and it runs noticeably cooler than my 2006 core duo 2.16 MBP. Nonetheless, I'm still curious what the processor temperature is, and curious how you measure it.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

OS X :: How To Measure Throughput Of External Hdd To Mac Mini

May 27, 2010

Believe me i know the numerous problems i could be having and i have been exploring them all for several months. I think it is a combination of things and this might be one. I have a 4 tb graid FireWire external hdd that i think runs slightly smoother but i want to see some actual transfer rate numbers before i start investing in a new array.

I also have a 2010 i7 mbp with 8 gb ram and 256 ssd on the way and if that baby doesn't run the movies smoothly then i will have to assume i have an encoding issue or there is some flaw in snowleopard. Also in case anyone was wondering i have hardware acceleration enabled in plex.

Applications :: Measure RAM / Processor Usage Of Running

Mar 1, 2009

I was wondering if there is an application available that will allow you measure how much a running application is tasking your RAM and processor. (I ask because I recently downloaded a programme called DarkAdapter. It allows me to make my display even dimmer than the default dimming device on the new unibody Macbook. When I run the programme, however, my machine noticeably slows down.)

IMac (Intel) :: BSD Process Name Corresponding To Current Thread

Aug 23, 2014

I have a late iMac 2013 and have had problems since day one and always just assumed it was bad RAM as i upgraded to 16GB, from 8. I finally took the RAM i purchased out and have left the original RAM in and still continually get the below error after restart.

I have removed Kasperky via the Kaspersky removal tool but i notice it still references it below? Unusually it seems to be ridiculously unstable when i am downloading any Movies i have purchased from iTunes (the current movie has crashed 4 or 5 times today) or if i am ripping a DVD i have purchased using iSkysoft. I have started in safe mode but that made no difference, i actually think it has gotten worse since i removed the extra RAM.

Intel Mac :: Mid 2007 - Won't Power On

Feb 20, 2012

My mid-2007 intel iMac 24" won't power on, there is no sound, screen activity or signs of life other than a slight "bzz bzz" when the power button is pressed. Yesterday it was working fine, I put the computer to sleep and when I attempted to wake it the next day, it would not. The optical eye on the mouse was lit and a green led light could be seen reflecting through the memory access door, but the computer made no sounds and would not wake. I held the power button until the mouse turned off and then attempted to reboot. All I get is a quick buzz (possibly the hard drive sound that you normally hear just before the chimes and screen powering on) when the power button is pressed, but no other activity. I attempted resetting the SMC and reinstalling the memory, no avail. Just a little buzz and nothing else. An

OS X :: Using Rosetta To Run Power Mac Software On My Intel Mac?

Sep 26, 2009

I have a lot of important Data from my old Power Mac (Power Mac 7300/180) that I would like to be able to run using Rosetta. The major Applications I would like to run are MacWrite Pro & Microsoft Works Vers. #4.0c. My old Power Mac was running OS 9.1 I have the original install Floppies for MacWrite & Microsoft Works. (they would have to be copied unto a CD for me to be able to install them on my Intel Mac. (no floppy drive on the Intel Mac)

Assuming I could get copies of the old Applications on a CD & then install them on my Intel Mac would they run under Rosetta & be able to open my old Data files? I am definitely not well informed about the capabilities of Rosetta. I installed Rosetta on my Intel Mac when I upgraded to Snow Leopard.

Intel Mac :: Won't Turn On SMC Or Power Pack?

Apr 13, 2012

Using my iMac today working away and all of a sudden the screen went black, there was no power to the computer at all. I have checked the fuse and that is ok. I am getting power to everything else. I reset the SMC as per Apple instructions on their website. Again nothing.

I then left it turned off for a good 5 mins and then turned on the power. The fans turned on and the mac then chimed, the creen came on and I thought everything was ok. Then the computer turned off, fans and hard drive sped It didnt even start booting to the Apple logo or the log on screen.

I am thinking this is a power issue within the computer and this will need to be replaced. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. My iMac is a 2008 21inch iMac. It is connected to a APC UPS which again all power ports are working, as I have tested that with a desk lamp. What I do normally is turn the UPS when I have shutdown my Mac in the evening and then power it up next day. While the UPS is doing is power self test I then boot the Mac, I am wondering if I should just leave the UPS turned on all the time and just unplug my iMac when I am not using it. Sometimes I do pop it to sleep last thing at night, but recently I just turn it off.

It has had heavy use so I am wondering if it is indeed curtains and I need to buy a new iMac. Maybe it is an excuse to buy a 27inch one! (Would be nice)

Intel Mac :: How Much Power Does It Use When Working And Asleep

May 4, 2012

As usual, whilst claiming green credentials, the information Apple gives regarding power use is minimal and vague to the point of being meaningless .The only figures they quote are:- Maximum continuous use 205w  (21.5")  and  310w  (27") What exactly does maximum continuous use mean ?

a. When the machine is switched on but not doing anything

b. Working at general office tasks

c. Working flat out transcoding video etc.

Which of these is it?  Or is it all 3? Does it use more power when performing harder tasks? If so, what power is used under scenarios a and b?  Finally, how much power is used in sleep mode?
