Can I purchase an additional storage to solve this issue or should I just get another external drive instead?

Jul 3, 2012My computer crashed when I was playing a DVD. It is a 500g hard drive and is 250G full, mostly music, some movies, and photos. I have lots of email as well. I have an old time machine backup but there were 3 months of unsaved data such as new movie downloads, ipad sync'ing, photos, and music I need to retrieve. I stopped running time machine because the external drive filled up and I was going to buy a new one.Â
I was able to reinstall the OS again over the old one and login however the old login was saved as a backup and a new user name was created. The permissions were all messed up and I could not reassign the old user name with the old programs and settings. The computer then crashed again before I could back anything up. Now if you try to reinstall the OS again the CD's crash and it wont finish. If you try to boot with the CD you can go to the Utility section and see that the drive says it's failing. I'm not sure how to back all the files.Â
Is there a way to remove the corrupt drive and later mount it as an external drive to the new one? I'm worried that I won't be able to back the files up if I connect a new external drive.

Jul 3, 2012After reinstall of OS X 10.7.4, I restored an older copy from Time Machine backup. I want to completely replace the current "Macintosh HD" folder with the folder that TM put inside it. I created a separate user account, that did not exist before to do it. Do I need to create a root account? Is there an easy way to copy /Macintosh HD/Macintosh HD/ to /Macintosh HD/?

Sep 15, 2009For the past few months, I've tried to restore my iPod Classic because it randomly restarts itself, not to mention moving on the following song during the middle of a song that is already playing. But that website simply doesn't help me out. I've taken my iMac to a Genius and he basically said that something is corrupted in OS X. I should mention the fact that programs such as Onyx and Maintenance claim that I am not the admin when in fact, my account is the only account on the computer. The funny thing was that I created a new account and restored the iPod through there, it would work just fine.
So, besides that long explanation of my problem, is there anyway I can fix this without having to resort to placing all my files on an external and installing a clean copy of OS X? Would archiving and installing back to Leopard do the trick?

Jul 20, 2009The USB flash drive is Sandisk, 4GB, formatted for Mac. It became corrupted and I don't have access to stored files. The messages on screen is that disk can not be read and invitation to reformat it. I found special software for recovering files from corrupted drives but it is not affordable for a student like me. I've tried to find in forums and word of mouth some shareware/freeware working on Mac OS 10.3.9 but all I got is programs that take space on HD and do nothing, that is, software that is about selling and marketing stuff, not the real thing. Tried with 3 different such a programs, sheer time wasting. I found that this area is pretty much absolutely dark. Do experienced fellow mac users know about some truly working shareware/freeware that can help me retrieve the files from this corrupted Sandisk USB flash drive?

Jun 30, 2012Yesturday suddenly my macbook pro just quit on me. It got really slow, and eventually froze up, so i reset the computer, but to my suprise, it would'nt start up again, it was stuck on a BLANK loading screen, one in 5/6 times rebooting it would go to the apple logo. eventually i put in the OS disk, and again, it would'nt get past the screen even while holding down 'c' eventually after countless tries, it did get past, but now it says, "Select the disk where you want to install Mac OS X" and its not showing anything under that. I went to the disk utility, and it would not show my Macintosh Hd, so I think there is something wrong with the hard drive, but I've looked online and people have complained about it being a data ribon problem as well.

Apr 2, 2012I edited a wedding on Final Cut studio. Both the software as well as all my uploaded footage collected on an external harddrive. BOOMÂ My hard drive completely becomes corrupt and I can't mount it (meaning my computer doesn't recognize the drive). I then purchased a data-recovery software and, after about two hours, recovered the corrupted files. I then downloaded "VLC" as well as "DIGITAL REBELLION" to repair the files and they cannot seem to do so. Case and point I need these MOV. files as soon as possible and I turn to this forum for guidance of any kind. My Mac is a desktop iMac. It's completely updated and I'm running on iOS X 7.3.

OS X :: Snow Leopard Corrupted My Hard Drive -> No Backup
Nov 10, 2009Yesterday, I stuck the upgrade DVD in and started the upgrade. Half way through the process it rebooted. At this point a big warning sign came up saying there has been errors, please reboot (I haven't seen this again). The current situation is that the macbook (Black 250gb) boots for around 20 seconds (grey screen with apple and ajax style loader gif thing) before powering down. Attempted remedies and outcomes. I have reinserted snow leopard and leopard to check the disc utility. It tells me quite quickly that the disk needs repairing. On clicking repair, it tells me that it requires me to backup erase/install. I have attached the mac to a macbook pro (the one I'm writing on) using target mode. The host (this one) cannot see the disk in finder mode but can in disk utility. The hard drive of the target is grayed out and i cannot right click for further options (such as reveal).
I have tried starting in single user mode but I get the following message: Singleuser boot fsck not done. I have tried starting in verbose mode but i get an I/O disk error and then it turns itself off. I have tried to force mount the target in terminal but it says resource busy. I only have myself to blame as it is inexcusable not to backup prior to an upgrade. I'm just so used to mac products working perfectly. To make matters worse, the last backup was on a hard drive which i have just found out is also corrupt (and my itouch stopped working today too!). So basically I have no backup. To portray the gravity of the situation, the info on the computer is a 1.5 year project. that's basically over a 5th of my life that I may have to repeat! The problem (from reading) is that the file structure is messed up. I'm sure that my files are there, it's just I can't access them.
My question is simple. How can I find and copy files from the broken macbook to this new and working macbook pro.

When your on disk utility you have the hard drive type then "macintosh HD under it.
When i click the hard drive it shows i have 91 GB remaining on it
When i click macintosh HD it shows its only a 200GB hd when its a 250 and only has 69 gb free?

Oct 13, 2009I'm both elated and pissy at the same time. Something happened to my mac when I was traveling, be it a latent hardware flaw, damage, or some other random act, and my mac OSX partition just, well, died. Unbootable, disk utility spends over a day trying to fix the boot record. The Bootcamp windows partition is fritzy, but it at least mounts and periodically can be booted from. I bought an external usb hard drive, loaded SL onto that, and have my mac back up and running again, but no data to speak of. So based on numerous recommendations, I paid good money to purchase Disk Warrior 4. Nothing, just told me the Macintosh HD partition on the hard drive was damaged, but that bootcamp could still be read.

Nov 9, 20101. I do occasional maintenance with onyx and have been getting a few startup disk errors in recent months. These seem to get repaired and the computer still functions as normal. I have never had these before in 8 years of using osx so they do worry me. Is the osx boot drive just a bit corrupted? Would a simple reinstall help or is the hd showing signs of failure?
2. The trash simply refuses to empty. The operation can�t be completed because you don�t have permission to access some of the items.
I've tried to bring the items back to the desktop and the folder they came from but they simply make a copy of them. I've tried the option key method and sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash + sudo rm -rf /Users/user_name/.Trash in the terminal but get no change

Sep 6, 2014l I now have to completely wipe, re-format and re-load OSX onto my iMac's internal HD, My iMac is a late 2009 27" and at present has OSX 10.8.5 loaded, ( loaded but with many miss-functions ). Prior to the problem the iMac was running OSX Lion, what version though I can't remember.I installed 10.8.5 the other day to see if that would fix things, but it hasn't. It was not a "clean install", just regular one from downloaded OSX 10.8.5.
I have run Disk Utility and TechTool Pro' 7 to try to make repairs to address the problems so far to no avail. Main problems are that my most used applications, FCP-7 Studio, Aperture and Photoshop CS5 amongst others, open but then immediately crash. I've reloaded the troubled applications, de-installed them properly with de-installation app's then clean re-installed them, but that's made no difference. They will not mount.
I reckon there must be a fault or corruption on the HD, probably caused during the Optimisation as everything was functioning well before I did that. So, the only OSX install disks I have are the original disks that came with the iMac, OSX 10.6.2 and a Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD OSX 10.6. I do have the downloaded copy of OSX Mountain Lion that I pulled from the App Store the other day and that copy is now on an external USB / Firewire 800 HD.Â
As I said I would like to be able to clean off the iMac's internal 2tb drive completely and install a fresh newer OSX. If I first have to load OSX.6.2 then upgrade via the App Store that's fine, but I'd rather just go straight to Mountain Lion if possible. Whatever works best. Getting rid of any corruption on the iMac's HD is the prime motivation.Â
All my applications and files are backed up to a 2tb LaCie external drive.The iMac has approximately 900 gb's of content onboard and the rest is free / unused space.

OS X :: Laptop Restarted Itself - Items No Longer In Macintosh Hard Drive Folder
May 21, 2009I have searched for this as much as possible but am not finding any conclusive answer and am not a techy enough to try and figure it out myself. My laptop restarted itself last night for no reason and when i restarted it, all the items on the desktop were no longer there and in the Macintosh HD folder there was a ~ file with what seemed like a system dump (approx 500kb in size) Now Firefox and iTunes no longer work. iTunes says it can not find the library file. [URL:...] This happened 6 months ago when i tried to install CS 3 suite and i had to reinstalled OSX and start all from scratch. If i delete the file and restart the laptop, the file returns, and then it begins to no longer recognize external hard drives and the only way to access them is via Terminal. i am backing up what i can for the moment but would prefer to know what has happened and how to fix it.

?9GB Ultra2 LVD SCSI hard disk with Ultra2 LVD SCSI PCI card
I need your help in recommending a suitable hard drive replacement. It looks like the "big drives" - those with over 128GB of storage space - need 48-bit addressing. Macs built before 2002 don't have built-in support for it. I assume I'm only going to see 128GB. So presumably, I'm looking for a drive with at least 128GB... but really any recommendation is welcome.
