Intel Mac :: Access Partitioned Hard Drive?

OS X :: Hard Drive Not Partitioned
Feb 1, 2010I partitioned my harddrive to put Windows XP on it. Then I decided I didn't want to put Windows XP on it. So I unpartitioned the harddrive using Disk Utility and my Mac shows that the hard drive is not partitioned, however, when I turn on my computer I have to hold down the "Option" button in order for me to choose to boot from the Macintosh HD. If I don't hold down the "Option" button a black screen shows up that says "Please enter a bootable disk" or something of that nature.

Aug 28, 2009So I just partitioned my drive to install Windows and noticed that my hard drive is now making that "crunching" sound that some hard drives make. It started during my Windows installation, and it happens regularly in Windows.
I also briefly hear it while OSX is starting up, but it doesn't seem to happen much in OSX. I've launched a bunch of applications and it is still pretty much silent. Any ideas what could cause this? Could it be NTFS? I have several hard drives in my PC that don't make that sound. I am using a 17" MacBook Pro unibody with the regular 320gb 5400rpm drive that it comes with.

Jul 19, 2009I partitioned my hard drive to in order to have an option of running tiger or leopard and thought that the partition would wipe my hard drive clean and was acceptant of this; however, I recently noticed that my disk space is running dangerously low and have discovered that all the crap I had on my hard drive before is still lingering in the depths of my hard drive. Anyways, is there any way I could just completely wipe my hard drive because I have a complete mess of duplicate files and songs that I don't want to even bother sorting through.

Jun 21, 2014I replaced a 1 TB external drive partiotioned in 2 with a 3 TB extrnal drive run/store my corbon copy cloner back up and time machine.
The 3 TB drive was successfully partitioned through the disk utility and both back ups are installed and the initial back up is complete.
My question is about the 1 TB drive. I want to completely erase all data from the drive in order to use it for a different use.
Using disk utility one of the partitions deleted without incident when following the same protocol the second partition produced error messages.
Volume erase failed
Volume Erase failed with the error:
Couldn’t unmount disk.
If I try to eject the disk
It says it will not eject becaus e a program may be using it...
The only program that utilized this partition is Carbon Copy Cloner which is not being utilized on the new 3TB drive.
I do not see where there is a option to have more than on disk chosen for this purpose so am unsure why the disk utility is seeing the old partion as still in use.
Intel Mac :: 2009 20" Slow/Unresponsive Hard Drive Access
Mar 11, 2012I stopped by a friends house to try and help them with an early 2009 20" iMac that started stalling on startup (sometimes before their login screen, and sometimes after). The computer didn't exhibit this behaviour at all, then overnight, it behaved as stated and never once allowed them to get far enough to launch an application or open the Finder.
When I arrived, rebooted and held down Command + Option + P + R, but it had no effect on the problem. I then booted off the original OSX discs and ran Disk Utility. At first it seemed slow to complete, but before long (a few minutes) the Verify Disk finished without any errors. Next, I attempted "Repair Disk Permissions" and noticed that this was taking a very long time, +10 minutes. That said, it did complete without any problems, albiet slowly.
Unfortunately, this did not allow me to login, and I never made it to the login screen. Being a close friend, I offered to take the computer home and try to copy as much data as I could through Target Disk Mode over Firewire.
My first attempt to copy her Home directory got 25% of the way through the roughly 4 GB of data, then stopped. I rebooted and tried again, with even less success than before (I could barely access Folders let alone copy after the reboot). I attempted to recreate the "successful" attempt by unplugging the computer and letting it sit for a few hours. Sure enough, I was able to copy data from the Target Disk Mode mounted drive, but after about 1 GB of copying the access to the hard slowed to a crawl (a few kilobytes per minute) then halted completely.
I've repeated the above process to slowly but surely copy the entire 4 GB of home directory data, and am about to call it quits after salvaging what was important to her.
Question: Is this the sign of a failing hard drive close to the end of its life, or is this something potentially more serious with the logic board? I've only come across a stubborn drive like this with an external drive that was close to failure, and assume this is the case.
OS X :: Access Old PC Hard Drive (SATA) With MBP?
Jul 5, 2009When I sold my old desktop PC i took out the SATA hard drive (WD1600JS). My question is how can I access that drive without buying a external drive enclosure? What cables will I need? I just want to hook it up and see what's on it and completely erase the drive so I can give it away. I don't even have to see what's on it, i'm more concerned with erase the info. I have access to a PC at work if this has to be done with a PC and not my MBP

Feb 15, 2012I have a MacBook Pro that used Lion. The computer's software crashed and wouldn't start up, so I took it to my local Apple repair store to get it fixed. They said they could pull all my files and data from my computer, since the hard drive was fine, and that they would reinstall it on my hard drive when they reset my computer. When I got my computer back and when through the initial set up and start up steps, I selected the option to retrieve data from a disk on my computer. My computer spent seven hours just searching for the disk, so I finally decided to ignore the data that's supposedly located somewhere on my computer, and just set the machine up again.
I set up my computer and realized that the Apple repair store reset or reinstalled Snow Leopard instead of Lion. I'm not sure how much a difference the OS makes, but now Migration Assistant can't find the other disk in my hard drive that has all my old data on it. I'm in a country that doesn't have actual Apple stores or Apple support systems in place

Mar 9, 2012I have just installed a new hard drive in my imac intel 20" (2006) and upgraded the memory and now the hard drive does not show up in the 'select destinations' folder of the install program. I can see the hard drive in the disk utilities window however it wont let me do anything.It is a seagate 1TB SATA II drive however it is displaying it as a 7.3 TB.I have tried to erase and partition and get the same error message each time, 'Input/Output error'.
I have tried starting the thing with the install disk which is Mac OS X (Tiger?) which came with the computer

Feb 20, 2009I am my computer's administrator, and I have a secondary 'guest' account that anyone else can use. So, I know that all my data on my main, OS hard drive is secure from the guest account accessing it, but what about the additional hard drive that I have installed?
I have a good deal of sensitive data and files stored (and aliased) on my second internal drive that I do not care for 'guest' users to stumble upon. How can I restrict access to the secondary storage hard drive from my Guest login account, and/or just plain hide it from it? Surely, there is a need for this that has brought about a solution.

Nov 25, 2009Everytime I try to click on my external hard drive it closes the window. I have two identical WD MyBook 250GB drives. Both are FAT 32 formatted. I can access one of them fine from my Macbook. The other displays its icon, but as soon as I click on it, it opens a window, then closes it again. I can access the drive via a PC. I purchased a replacement hard drive (LaCie mobile disk 500GB) which worked fine until I transferred the data at which point the same thing started happening with the new drive.
I ran a Bit Defender scan on the hard drive and the only thing that turned up was an "Exploit.PDF-JS.Gen" file buried inside Adobe Acrobat. Bit Defender couldn't quarantine or disinfect the file so I deleted the copy of Acrobat but the drive still won't mount. I have a Macbook running OS X 10.4.11 and a 2 Ghz Intel processor.

Jan 22, 2010I purchased a first generation 15'' MacBook Pro. My hard drive had crashed, so I backed up all my information and installed a new hard drive. Everything worked fine for about two weeks until the contact area between my power cord and the computer started to smoke. I've no longer been able to turn on my computer. I've had strange issues with my non-warrantied MacBook--including having to replace the battery four times over my three years of owning it and twice having to replace my power adapter (as it literally caught fire twice).
I've since given up on the MacBook Pro and purchased a new cheap laptop. However, I've got lots of important files on that brand new hard drive I put into my laptop. As I'm assuming the hard drive itself is still functional, I want to know how I could remove it and obtain my data. Do any of you know what sort of chassis I could purchase in order to essentially use my MacBook Pro's hard drive as an external drive to obtain these files?

Jan 5, 2009I'm using a 1.42ghz Macmini running 10.4.11. I've been using a Lacie 500 G firewire external hard drive for over a year to store and retrieve files. I have several movies in the mp4 format stored on the Lacie external hard drive. I recently opened one of the movies in full screen (quicktime). It ran for about 10 minutes before freezing up. I watched the spinning beach ball for about 5 minutes. Unable to force quit Quicktime, I pulled the plug on the Macmini. After restarting the computer, the icon for the Lacie external hard drive no longer appeared on the desktop.
I tried several different things to get the icon back, including: repairing the permissions and shutting down the external drive and unplugging the power supply for several minutes before reconnecting the external drive to the computer. The external drive doesn't show up in either the System Profiler or Disk Utilities.

Nov 20, 2009I have a G3 mac blue. About 4 years ago my ex-husband installed a new hard drive and upped the memory as far as it would go. I am currently using Mac 4.11 system I think. This morning the computer was making an odd noise and wouldn't move off the screen saver mode. I rebooted. When it came back up, the odd noise was there for a minute or so and then stopped. However, it will only access the original hard drive, which I haven't saved anything on for 3 years. How can I find my secondary hard drive? Incidently I wasn't able to access the old hard drive for about 2 years. Sure it would be nice if i could access the both of them but i just want my new one back!! I live in a small town where no one is mac proficient. I replaced the power unit a year ago myself.
