Intel Mac :: Why Can't Renew Apple-care Plan After The Initial Plan Has Expired
Feb 2, 2012
Bought my IMac a year ago, got the applecare plan and am good until 2014; however, it would be great if I could renew my applecare plan after the initial plan. or just before, the plan expires. The applecare staff is great to deal with, but it's a nice feeling to know that I can access them after the first 3 yrs. of ownership. I bought my IMac with the knowledge that I wouldn't need to upgrade my hardware as often as I did with a PC, and although I understand I can still recieve assistance on a case by case basis, it would be easier, and more cost effective, to have the option of extending my plan if I choose to. Just a thought. and am hoping that Apple will listen and offer something for its customers like this. Am an owner of the IMac, and IPad2, Ipod touch and will be buying an IPhone 5 when they are released.

First I would like to say hello to everyone and soon I will (finally) enter the Mac world. I've been a 50-50 type of guy (Apple/Microsoft) and I had the majority of the multimedia Apple products without actual Macs though. I was tempted to buy a MacBook before but I always wanted something sleek, sexy yet with a good sauce of performance since I am not a heavy usage type of guy and for gaming I will be getting a 360 Slim later on. Finally that day has come and I will be buying the ultimate 11". Question is, is it worth the extended Apple Care plan? I searched for answers on the official Apple site, googled up for a couple of days but I didn't find exactly what I wanted. Does it cover (for example) accidental damage? Or what are the real advantages of having an extended Apple Care plan? Since it will be my first Mac I will want to take extra care with it.

I have purchased a Macbook Pro back in August of 09. I didn't intend to move back to Europe, but it happened. I have been sorta reluctant to buy Apple Care back. However in the lights of what recently happened in my daily life, I may use Apple Care for my uMBP. I would like to know if this is possible to buy Apple Care Protection plan for a machine purchased in the States. I know the terms applied are global, but I have my reserves as to buying AC outside of the country/region where the purchase as occured.

This question will probably make me look like a total noob. But I can't find info on the Apple website. I've purchased Apple Care from a third party seller. Now I got the code emailed, without instructions. How do I activate this protection plan?

So I'm switching over to a Mac and I'm thinking about data backup and recovery. I've got a new MacBook Pro and I'll be connecting a 1Tb external drive for Time Machine. I will also use either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to do a clone backup once a week to a separate external drive that I will leave locked up at work (offsite). But...
If my laptop were to die and I have to get Apple to repair it, I understand that I could be without my computer for possibly weeks. How can I get to my data if I don't have another Mac at my house? Are the clone backups of CCC or SuperDuper accessible through Windows, at least to pull out individual files?
In my Windows world, I always have a couple of computers laying around and if I lost a computer (or drive) it was no big deal to just access a backup image I created with Acronis from another computer and pull out files I needed to work on.

I need to 'draw' a 'top down' view plan of a room in my house.
I think I could use Microsoft Visio on my XP laptop, but I want to be able to do it on my iMac. Any suggestions of applications that will enable me to do this?

WD 6.3cm (2.5) 500GB SATA WD5000BEVT 5400 8mb [WD5000BEVT]
I believe that is the one without WD's free fall sensor (or whatever it is called)?
I can get a very good deal on it (41€). I plan on copying my stock 250GB Toshiba drive 1:1 to it with Carbon Copy Cloner.
Would this drive be good?

My iMac 27" started cutting out/powering down for no apparent reason... I took it to an authorised repairer to be 'fixed'; 19 days later, It's had a new power supply, new power inverter and logic board (still not tested at this point in time to see if it resolves the issue). When i dropped it in it had the official VESA mount adaptor fitted not its original stand (that was in the box); I asked them to put the stand back on, they can't, they're saying the mechanism's damaged and AppleCare doesn't cover it.... Hardware is it not? The VESA adaptor is designed for home install, how can that not be covered?

I just called Apple about an iPod issue. When he told me that my iPod's Apple Care expired, I gave him my Mac Pro SN, and he helped with the iPod issue as a courtesy. So while on the topic, I thought to request an extension of coverage for my Mac Pro system (about $5k worth of hardware).
He told me that Apple Care cannot be extended. "So you just have to buy new stuff, huh?" I asked. He quietly replied, "Yes."
I cannot imagine having to buy $5k plus new hardware just to keep my equipment covered. Wow. Did I misunderstand him? Does anyone need some editing work done.

I upgraded the RAM in my 2006 Mac Mini 1.83 a year or so ago. Thing worked fine until the other day. I purchased Applecare for this Mini in case anything went wrong. Something finally did-system will NOT boot, nor even power on, but the cooling fan runs at high speed continuously when the Mini is plugged in. Took it to a "genius" bar, and the guy was THE BIGGEST ASS ever. He FLIPPED THE HELL OUT when he found out I had opened the case. Took him 20 minutes to hunt it down, but he finally found some terms and conditions that state moding a Mini voids the warranty. I have had many people tell me, including Apple resellers, that adding RAM to a mini does NOT void the warranty. So anyway, I guess I am mostly pissed because the IDIOT DOLT at the "genius" bar knew less about computers than my 11 year old son and was determined to not give me the time of day because I had "sinned" and gone against Almighty Apple's wishes. The JERK had no interest in helping trouble shoot once he found out I opened the box. ALL HE DID was plug the stupind thing in, never even LOOKED inside it. Just put the top back on and plugged it in. I wish I could get the mini fixed, but they wanted nearly $400 for out of warranty service to which I politely declined. It had become a spare computer anyway. I own FIVE minis, TWO Macbooks, TWO iPhones, and at least FOUR iPods. I have spent in excess of $5,000 on Apple stuff in the last 18 months........

I got Apple Care at the same time as I bought my 2010 Macbook Pro (at an Apple Store). First of all, I did not get an Apple Care box - just a receipt with the agreement number and other Apple Care particulars. Is this normal?
Second, I read somewhere that you need to register Apple Care?? The Apple Store sales rep did not say anything about registration. So do I still need to register - or is it only for people who buy Apple Care separately from the hardware? And if I do have to register, how do I go about it?

I just got the 2.13ghz 128gbSSD off of ebay (fnjjor a great deal!). Just arrived today and everything looks great - works great etc. I wanted to see the age of my mba and when I entered the SN into the apple support site - it says that apple needs proof of purchase that whole deal. Well I don't have a legitimate proof of purchase from an authorized site (need to ask the seller), but the MBA is 11 months old according to coconut battery.
1. Should I even get applecare? Hinges can be replaced out of warranty, and I have an SSD that is failsafe. Any other issue would probably be my own fault.
2. I should be ok purchasing apple care through the customer support number yes? I think I did that for a powerbook and was able to buy apple care for it (a 12" G4 no less!)

My apple care ran out over a month ago and they still covered a video card problem in my Mbp. Anyone else get repairs done after coverage expired? I was having an aweful time trying to figure out why I couldn't get a good calibration when running external monitors. The card seemed to be working, but I guess whenbutvwas put under stress it failed. My mbp is at apple getting a new logic board, can't imagine what that costs. Plus my 30" cinema is getting a new hinge that would not tighten properly. Apple care is definitely worth it.

I have the last Aluminum 15" MBP model to come out right before the unibodies. I bought it the day the uni's came out to save some dough. Got the Applecare and all has been good until recently.Recently I have noticed some "stage lights" showing on my screen. It looks like a string of lights coming from the bottom of my screen and fading away the further up the screen they progress.
