IMac (Intel) :: Amount Being Backed Up By Time Machine Keeps Growing During Full Backup?

Dec 6, 2014

After some problems with Time Machine backup, I removed a bunch of stuff from my internal hard drive, reformatted my external HD used for backups, and started a new full backup.  Time Machine has been running for about 24 hours and gives me a status of Backing up: xx GB of yy GB.  Both xx and yy keep growing (apace) so that I don't believe xx will ever equal yy.

To cryptic?  Here are real numbers.  My internal disk being backed up contains 469.39 GB.  Backup status now says Backing up: 685.78GB of 754.42 GB.  Both numbers just keep growing. I'm happy to let Time Machine overnight (again) but, really, this can't be normal.

Now Time Machine says the drive is full and cannot complete the back up- how can I delete some old back ups to make room for the latest one?  And once I have room- restrict it to back up only once a week?  I really want to use the drive for the music and photos- but fear not having a complete backup before i update to Mt. Intel Mac :: No Longer Recognize Time Machine External Drive?

Jun 26, 2012

2012 iMac running 10.7.4 (lion). I have an external hard drive that I use for Time Machine. It has been working fine. Today, I turned it on to run Time Machine and the computer does not see the hard drive. I used a different cord to connect it. Still did not work. I tested both cords with a different external drive and they worked. So it is not the cords. The hard drive is getting power from its separate power cord. The hard drive knows when it is hooked up because the motor in the hard drive revs up when I plug it into the computer. However, the computer does not see it on the desktop or in finder.

IMac (Intel) :: Hard Drive And Time Machine Invalid Node Error?

Sep 3, 2014

I have a late 2006 iMac, which I know must be at the end of its life now, but at the weekend my main internal HD developed an error, and it wouldn't boot, even from the recovery partition.

I managed to find my old Snow Leapard disks and ran Disk Utility on my HD (when it actually saw it) and the error it came back with was "Invalid Node". After trying many things, I had to reformat and reinstall from my Time Machine back up, which went really well.

However, once all restored it tried to do a backup and it failed. I then went into Disk Utility again and it found the same error on the Time Machine drive.

Therefore, my question is, could the back up process have copied an 'error' to my back up? Or is this a fault somewhere else (Disk Management etc) that I need to watch in case it cases errors with my other drives that have important information on?

MacBook Pro :: Time Machine Will Not Work Because HD Full?

Mar 13, 2012

I am trying to delete files from my USB Iomega HD in order for Time Machine (TM) backup to work. TM keeps giving me an error msg that disc is full. I then try to delete files from usb to the trash and the error msg I keep getting will not allow me to do this. The error message is some files are locked/unlocked and when I press either it cancels deleting files from the USB hard drive. I thought that every time you use back up using TM it gets rid of the earliest files, hence I should not have multiple copies of the same files on the USB hard drive.

Now it is doing another full back up for no apparent good reason. I have not made any significant changes to the system at all. I'm backing up to an external drive that is attached to my AE. How to reduce the amount of Fulls it does because each day seems it does a couple.

OS X Mavericks :: Time Machine Is Full When Using Two Drives

Jun 26, 2014

I'm running OS X 10.9.3 and now that Time Machine supports it, I have two external drives set up for Time Machine backups.  One (the one I've been using all along) is 750GB and has not very much space left.  The second, which I recently installed, is 1TB and has approx 625 GB of space left.  The reason I installed the second drive is because my first was running out of space and I would regularly get the message saying that the drive is full and older backups were getting deleted.  So I'm curious, why isn't Time Machine using the space on my newly installed, second, Time Machine drive?  Why is it still clearing out old backups on my original drive?  Is there any way I can stop this?  Or are the old backups going to continue to get deleted from my original drive until some sort of parity is achieved between the backups on the two drives?

I did find a ethernet cable so my question is, can I cancel the restore? And restart it via ethernet cable? It doesny list an option to cancel but can I just turn off by the power button or turn off time capsule?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Not Recognizing Full Space Available On NAS

Jun 16, 2012

I recently purchsed and set up an Iomega Storcenter ix4-200d NAS with Time Machine support. The NAS has 8 TB storage total, with ~4.6 TB available.I have TIme Machine support turned on in the Storcenter, assigned to a folder called "Time-Machine." In my OSX Time Machine preferences, I select the "Time-Machine" folder on my NAS as the back-up disk, and my Mac connects to it just fine. The challenge is Time Machine returns an error saying there isn't enough space on the backup disk to complete the backup. For some reason, Time Machine is only recognizing 536.36 GB of space available on the backup disk, even though there are ~4.6 TB available.I tried manually moving my iTunes media folder (~700 GB) to the "Time-Machine" folder on my NAS to see if the Iomega NAS was arbitrarily setting a max size to a Time Machine folder.I was able to manually move just under 1 TB of data to the same "Time-Machine" folder that Time Machine says only has 536.36 GB of space.

I tried deleting the Time-Machine store on my NAS, turning Time Machine support off, then turning it back off and creating a new "Time-Machine" folder.I did this several times and still get the same behavior.I even tried running Time Machine piecemeal, excluding larger folders at first and running a back-up, to see if maybe Time Machine wasn't liking that large of an initial backup. This worked, and then I gradually removed some exclusions and ran back-ups again, so each back-up size was never more than 200 GBs or so. However, after several back-ups, I received the same error message saying there wasn't enough space on the backup disk when the total sparsbundle size reached 536.36 GBs.Since I can manually move more than 536.36 GB of data to the backup disk, I'm guessing it must be something with Time Machine not recognizing the full space available on the NAS.

OS X :: How To Repair System After Full Restore To Time Machine Backup

Jan 13, 2011

I decided to restore to a Time Machine backup I had done a few days earlier, hoping that I would just "start" fresh. Without realizing it, I had inserted the Leopard install dvd that came with my computer, and restored to my 10.6.6 backup. I got the "You must restart your computer" error, which I found out was a result of using the Leopard disk. So, I redid the restore using a Snow Leopard installer on USB.

After this, everything appeared to be working fairly well. However, today, I've started to get system crashes quite frequently, and at times I haven't been able to properly shut down or restart. I noticed that Spotlight was indexing, and would hang at "3 hours remaining" or "estimating time left." Right now, I have created a second admin account, and I have disabled indexing. It seems to be working, at least temporarily, because I'm using it right now.
