Intel Mac :: Time Machine Backups And External Drive?

Jun 29, 2012

I have an iMac and send all my Time Machine backups to an Iomega 250gb external hard drive. Now Time Machine says the drive is full and cannot complete the back up- how can I delete some old back ups to make room for the latest one?  And once I have room- restrict it to back up only once a week?  I really want to use the drive for the music and photos- but fear not having a complete backup before i update to Mt. Lion.

OS X :: Time Machine On External Drive - Can't Use Drive For Other Backups

May 25, 2009

I have a MacPro, OS X 10.5.7. I have TM configured to back up to an external 1 TB firewire drive. I use Adobe Lightroom for photography. it provides a checkbox to allow you to backup all photos as you import them from your camera card. Adobe recommends selecting an external drive for these backups. But for some reason, it does not allow me to select the external drive that TM uses.

OS X Mavericks :: Copy Time Machine Backups From Desktop To Reformatted External Drive

Dec 10, 2014

My time machine backups to an external drive stopped with a message that the backup could not be done because the drive could not be repaired and needed to be reformatted.  Prior to reformatting I copied the TM backup file of 250GB to my desktop.  My internal drive is 500GB and this only leaves me with 33GB of available space. I then reformatted the drive with the proper OS extended journaled and GUID partition. The external drive is 500GB.  When I try to copy the backup file from the desktop to the reformatted drive the process begins normally with the message  "preparing to copy files" but as the preparation process reaches 13,000,000 files it stops with the message "there is not enough sufficient space to copy files" even though it never even got to the actual file transfer.  I have tried copying the backups in small batches to the new drive but I get an error message that backup files cannot be modified.

Hardware :: Transfer TC Time Machine Backups To External?

Jan 28, 2009

I just wanted to share my experience and hopefully answer any questions people may have about doing this:

I purchased a 1.5TB HDD and external enclosure to increase the backup size of my 500GB TC, and not wanting to start my backups from scratch I tried copying the sparsebundles to the new drive. To my surprise, I was able to switch my TM source disk to the new drive and the backups picked up where they left off! It proceeded to do an incremental backup, and after it was done I went into Time Machine and could see all the backups from the beginning! Now I can use my TC's internal as storage and keep the external for backups. Hope this helps anyone looking to increase the size of their backups without starting fresh...

OS X :: Two Time Machine Backups And One Drive

Intel Mac :: Time Machine Backups Taking Extremely Long Time Running Lion 10.7.4

Jul 2, 2012

I have an iMac running the latest version of Lion (10.7.4) and which I have upgraded to a one terabyte hard drive and full memory capability. I back up to a My Book 2 terabyte external hard drive using Time Machine. My iMac is often very sticky, though I've done most of the diagnostics I know of and preferences etc. are seemingly all OK and fcuk -fs gives a positive result! The Mac is often hard to wake from sleep and in particular seems to spend a lot of time backing up very-very slowly, with the result that it frustratingly seems to be backing up most of the time with the consequent effects on using other programs. Also the whole thing seems to grind to a halt after a hard days work with quite a few applications open. I'm wondering what can be causing this and what I can do to overcome this very frustrating and debilitating problem?

MacBook Pro :: Time Machine Backups - Partial Recovery Possible From Corrupt External HD

Jun 5, 2014

I have been using a 1 TB Iomega portable HD as my external HD for Time Machine backups of my early 2011 17" MacBook Pro with a 750GB Internal HD with only 190GB utilized. I just got a Time Machine message:

1) that backup couldn't be performed because of HD problem, and
2) to repair the HD with Disk Utility.

I ran DU Repair Disk and got the following Red Type messages interspersed between normal lines of DU activity reports:

"Invalid Sibling link"The volume Iomega_HDD could not be repaired."Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."

Can I recover the original and older time machine backups from my  ext. HD in a procedure that would allow me to continue backing up with TM but restarting with the most recent recovered "uncorrupted" TM backup as the base, thus allowing me access to older backups?

Or is my ONLY alternative to start Time Machine afresh with a full backup today (on a new ext. HD!), and just deem all those valuable Time Machine backups as lost forever?

Hardware :: Transfer Time Machine Backups To New Drive?

I have been using Time Machine for quite sometime, and backing up to a WD Passport. I need to move to another HD, but was wondering if it is possible to move the backups on the original external HD to the new one, so that I don't have to start all over. I have a strong suspicion that this is not possible, considering the dearth of information on the topic.

Intel Mac :: Erase Time Machine Backups?

Feb 11, 2012

I thought I could use a 1TB External drive to back up my 320GB startup disk, and use the rest of the empty 680GB for storage. However, Time Machine started taking up 600GB of spaceon the External drive! I was like "What the heck!?" So I put unwanted Time Machine Backups in the trash and emptied it. Nothing, they're stuck there now.

I'm planning on wiping the disk clean and starting over, but for future reference is there a proper way to delete Time Machine Backups? Surely there must be; (I mean, who would have known Time Machine would take up MORE SPACE than the drive it's backing up in the first place?

Intel Mac :: No Longer Recognize Time Machine External Drive?

Jun 26, 2012

2012 iMac running 10.7.4 (lion). I have an external hard drive that I use for Time Machine. It has been working fine. Today, I turned it on to run Time Machine and the computer does not see the hard drive. I used a different cord to connect it. Still did not work. I tested both cords with a different external drive and they worked. So it is not the cords. The hard drive is getting power from its separate power cord. The hard drive knows when it is hooked up because the motor in the hard drive revs up when I plug it into the computer. However, the computer does not see it on the desktop or in finder.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine - Auto-backups To Hard Drive?

Mar 28, 2012

Time Machine is not working correctly since installing Lion. I found (from using Adobe Bridge) that there seem to be automatic back ups being made 20 times a day and onto my hard drive!  Usually I back up to an external drive specifically for back up using Time Machine. Now time machine takes several hours to back up when I have that disk wired in (with USB) and the Time Machine icon in the Apple menu is always showing that the back up is delayed.

Intel Mac :: Transferring Previous Time Machine Backups To New?

Jun 10, 2012

Today I bought an iMac to replace my 2009 Mac Mini. Since the iMac had already been set up, I just transferred my data from Time Machine to it through Migration Assistant. A couple hours later I noticed that all my previous Time Machine backups from my Mac Mini didn't transfer over and that Time Machine had reset itself up.

Is there any way I can transfer over those previous backups from my Mac Mini to my new iMac? I know OS X Lion has a feature to do this, but both computers are running Snow Leopard. I am using a WD 2TB My Book for all my TM backups.

IMac (Intel) :: Can Time Machine Manage 2 Separate Backups?

Jun 21, 2014

I have an iMac 27" desktop.  I also use 2 external HD (Seagate type, 3 GB each) each connected via USB 3.0.  And lastly I have a 2TB Time Capsule that also serves as my wifi.

Originally I set up my Time Machine preferences to backup my iMac onto my Time Capsule, no problem, worked great.  Left it like this for a long time...

then I decided I wanted to use Time Machine to back up my External HD #1 (where I moved all my video project files), onto External HD #2.  This worked great, and I left these settings in place for a while.

then I decided it was time to back up my iMac again, so I went into my Time Machine preferences ended the current setup so that I could return to the original settings (backing up the iMac onto the Time Capsule).

...and so problem began.

My thinking was once I got a recent backup made with iMac to Time Capsule configuration then I would go into Time Machine preferences and re-establish the External HD #1 to HD #2 settings... thinking I could continue on this way manually, each week or so, and therefore have 2 different Time Machines each from 2 different sources.

Well, once I ended the set up of HD #1 to HD #2 I couldn't get Time Machine to successfully return to the original iMac to Time Capsule setup.  At this point I called apple support; they were able to walk me through some steps to get the Time Machine backing up my iMac onto the Time Capsule, but it required me to delete the original time Machine backup of the iMac on the Time Capsule.  Which led to reestablishing the backup (which in this case took almost 2 days to complete).

MacBook Pro :: Slim Hard Drive Doesn't Require Time Machine Backups

I have just purchased a Toshiba Stor.E Slim hard drive, which I do not require for Time Machine back ups.  Should I use the Tuxera NTFS driver, or should I format the hard drive for Mac?  Is any benefit over formatting vs using the driver?  I pretty much use Macs all the time, but there may be rare occasions when it would be useful to hook up to a PC.

OS X :: Time Machine Backups Missing / Unable To Find Backups

Sep 30, 2008

My Time Machine has been making the usual regular backups for a few months onto my Time Capsule. I just found that all the backups prior to about a week ago have vanished. It's not a disaster (I think) as I assume that the current backups reflect what's on my iMac (I haven't had to delete files from it yet).

Where did they go? Why did they go?

A possible connection: My TC is 500GB; my iMac 1TB. I recently put extra files for temporary use onto the iMac hard drive - Time Machine said (in effect) 'that's too much, try removing certain folders from the backup'. I excluded said folder and things seemed okay, but it would be at around the time I did that that my old backups have gone.

Hardware :: Time Capsule Vs Base Station - External Drive For Time Machine

Jan 11, 2010

As my 160N series Linksys router neither has gigabit ports, usb connector or dual band networking, I am looking for a replacement.

When it comes to Apple routers I am looking at 2 options - either the base station with an external USB drive or get a 1TB capsule with the buildt in drive and worries regarding reliability.

What I like about the Time Capsule is that it is neat to have all in one, takes up less space and only has 1 plug to attach, while Iike the idea that I can just connect a bigger drive later on the base station solution.

1. Will the connected USB drive function just like the internal drive in the Time Capsule for Time Machine use?

2. Will everything be transparent to Snow Leopard?

3. In case of both units with an attached USB drive - can I control who actually can see the drive and access it?

4. Do they support this DNLA thing so that e.g . PS3 can access an attached drive??
