Hardware :: Full System Restore From Time Machine?
Jul 28, 2010Got a new (used) 15" MBP and I'm trying to do a full system restore via Tima Capsule over the network. Started it last night at 11PM Estimated time was 15 hours.. Just got home from work the next day 5PM and it now says 5 Hours. But it jumps up a few minutes then down.
I did find a ethernet cable so my question is, can I cancel the restore? And restart it via ethernet cable? It doesny list an option to cancel but can I just turn off by the power button or turn off time capsule?

Apr 12, 2012I recently suffered the 'pleasure' of a HD failure in my 2008 24".An apple engineer replaced the drive and reinstated my data from time machine - all good so far. However, my mac doesnt want to relink with my existing backups and continue the save/delete old entries like before.I can still access my old backups, but It seems to want to create a new time machine on the very little space i have left on the drive for new backups.Is there a way of relinking to the previous backup or is it a case of wipe/restart, which i'd like to avoid.

Jan 13, 2011 I decided to restore to a Time Machine backup I had done a few days earlier, hoping that I would just "start" fresh. Without realizing it, I had inserted the Leopard install dvd that came with my computer, and restored to my 10.6.6 backup. I got the "You must restart your computer" error, which I found out was a result of using the Leopard disk. So, I redid the restore using a Snow Leopard installer on USB.
After this, everything appeared to be working fairly well. However, today, I've started to get system crashes quite frequently, and at times I haven't been able to properly shut down or restart. I noticed that Spotlight was indexing, and would hang at "3 hours remaining" or "estimating time left." Right now, I have created a second admin account, and I have disabled indexing. It seems to be working, at least temporarily, because I'm using it right now.

Mar 15, 2012I have reviewed notes regarding selective app restore method and am aware that there are issues assossiated with failed apps since the original app installer installs files in various libraries and system settings..My backed up Mac contains rogue programs such as the programming app python 3 and various rogue bugs and system settings
1 Does a full restore reset all backed up system settings or does it keep the fresh installation and include all your apps and settings such as mail accounts mail folders documents pictures movies podcasts etc without the bugs
2 Should the answer to 1 be a yes all compromised settings will be restored, then will I have issues with installing VMware fusion as its an encripted integrated app that I keep all my master business applications but store documents in the Mac documents area
Other factors
1 My accounting tax business has been hacked over and over again for the last 7 months from start of tax season
2 I have lost 50% of my clients due to the interruptions and been hospitalized twice from sitting on the computer for extended hours and days reinstalling fresh system and restoring Mac documents only, 3 times over, as well as trying to learn everything about best practice, hacks etc
3 I'm using fire vault 2 however the time machine backup is not encripted are there any potential problems with either of the two methods?
4 I will be using a proxy server when I next build the Mac will this be enough to mitigate potential security breach using the full time machine restore method?
5 I have many apps that I have not purchased through the app center and have not kept the keys and will be a headache to get all my details
6 what implications are there as far as the prior keychain access is consurned? How does that get restored?
What is the most effective and efficient method to restore from time machine given above scenario?

Apr 6, 2008I just got a message that my Time Machine external backup disk is full. I have another external drive I can use, but buying drives every few months is going to get expensive.
I was wondering what others are doing in this situation.
Is anybody archiving the Time Machine backup? If so, what software are you using and where are you storing your backup?

I tried to use the original disk with leopard but it said it could not do it due to the fact that I ow have SL. My assumption is that I would use the SL disk to restore?

Oct 28, 2009When installing OS X I always try to cluster the OS related files at the outer tracks of the hard drive, where the disk is fastest.

So I generally like to install OS X to an empty hard drive, and be done with all the OS related updates before I go on to install applications, copy user files etc. Most of the OS related files (depending on need for future updates) will now be clustered nicely together, making the machine as fast as it can be.
My question is: Does Time Machine "respect my efforts" here when doing a full restore? Will it place my system files at the outer tracks where they belong, or will it ignore the original placement of the files?

Jun 19, 2012I got SMART warning about my hard disk, I got it replaced by a shop, but said I would do OS restore myself. (cant afford cost )Thought it would be simple - but it is anything but.  It appears my install DVD is damaged, so was not able to boot with Grey OS install disk - holding the C key.I managed to get iMac to boot up using the old disk - using firewire dock. However I was not able to restore old disk and OS to new disk, Due to IO read error.(this is why I had the SMART warning). So I am unable to get the OS on the new HD using the old disk or the DVD as these are both damaged.  The computer is running, so I thought I would try buying and downloading LION - then using the migration tool . The download is still running after 2 days.I went to apple store, and was told that they cannot replace DVD , so I should bring in the iMac = and pay for the restore. Dont wish to do this. As I have the computer and OS running, is there anything I can do to get a time machine restore from another backup disk (USB).

Jun 19, 2009How long should I be stuck on the screen "calculating space required to restore data"? I've been on this screen for about 20, 30 minutes. The "hash mark wheel" is spinning, but just not seeing anything new. Is this normal? My backed up data is ~100 GB.

Dec 21, 2008So I had to wipe and reinstall Mac OSX.5 (or at least the Apple store genius did). I backed it up just before I took it, and now I am trying to restore completely from the login selection (restore from a time machine backup).
It recognizes my time capsule, and my time machine drive, and it goes to the window where it asks you to choose what to transfer: "User name, network and preferences, applications folder, and finally my files and folders" At first it said "calculating..." for all of them, but all of them except the applications folder finished. It has been over 3 hours and the applications folder is STILL "Calculating" and will NOT let me select transfer.

Mar 11, 2012I have a MacBook Air and a Time Capsule - both from november 2011.Using Time Machine is givning me som problems.It works fine for some days, an is backing up as planned.But at least 5 times since I got the Time Capsule, Time Machine is asking to make a full Backup, and when I look in Time Machine, it says that there is no "old backup". It has been runing since november 2011.When I start a new backup, as it ask for, it takes at least 24 hours to finish - some times even longer.Is this normal? If not, what do I do?

May 24, 2009i've got a niggling problem that i'd like to get sorted. I've searched the forums, but can't find anything that relates exactly to my problem.
I restored my pro from a time machine machine backup and now it displays the time incorrectly (-1hr). 'Set date & time automatically' is checked in system prefs which makes the problem even weirder. I'm using the Apple Europe sever too.
I've read somewhere about deleting a hidden file to solve the problem, but there isn't enough information to execute.

Jan 11, 2009just signed up for the forum today and plan on stopping by often.... but I have a question.
Recently my 15" MBP has been very sluggish, especially when it comes to browsing the web. I can scroll with my mouse wheel, and wait a few seconds, then I see it actually scroll. Flash video lags and drop frames, etc. Same type of stuff outside of the browser as well, just feeling slow.
So I've got my awesome Drobo (with 2 1TB drives I might add) as my Time Machine backup, and my question is that if I just do an erase and install of OSX, and restore my computer from my previous TM state, won't that just restore all the problems I had?
Would it be worth just starting over for real and install all my software, import my music, etc. manually, or should I trust Time Machine?

Feb 17, 2009So I upgraded my hard drive to 500gb and thought that the easiest way to transfer would be a fresh install and let time machine do it's magic. Well it kind of worked. Everything went smoothly until I tried to load itunes. itl database is from a previous version. Hmm... I thought Time Machine was supposed to back up EVERYTHING so I don't have to go reinstalling s*&^ again. Nevermind, update in Software Update and everything should be grand right? Wrong (arnie voice)
There were loads of updates still in there and 10.5.6 was a biggie. So install that one first. It hangs, I try again, it hangs on install. So approached it from another angle. Use Carbon Copy Cloner. So out with the new drive and in with the old drive. Begin Clone, it failed at 33%. Stuff that. Use something else. Super Duper. It copied superbly, althought it took ages. And then I could even boot use using the clone as the startup disk. So cloned the drive to the new 500gb disk. Took 8 hours...
And eventually.... it loads to the apple logo and then reboots after abotu 60 seconds. Infinite reboot loop.
So am I doomed to using the 160gb drive forever?!

Backed up the MB on an external using Time Machine. Erased the HD and performed a new, fresh install of Leopard. I'm now attempting to restore all the files I previously backed up, but when I click on a file or folder to restore I'm not actually given the "restore" option in Time Machine.

Dec 29, 2009I think my iMac disk may be a bit defragmented after three years of use including large video files. I did a test by installing a new copy of OS on external drive, and it was noticeably faster.
This makes me want to try reinstalling Snow Leopard as a clean install.
Can I then just use Time Machine to bring back everything *exactly* as it was? Will it do that? Emails and everything will be exactly as before?

Mar 13, 2012I am trying to delete files from my USB Iomega HD in order for Time Machine (TM) backup to work. TM keeps giving me an error msg that disc is full. I then try to delete files from usb to the trash and the error msg I keep getting will not allow me to do this. The error message is some files are locked/unlocked and when I press either it cancels deleting files from the USB hard drive. I thought that every time you use back up using TM it gets rid of the earliest files, hence I should not have multiple copies of the same files on the USB hard drive.
