When I open photos stored on an external hard drive, I can edit; print; or view them, but if I make any changes, it won't let me save them as they are "locked".

Close to pushing the 'buy now' button on an IMac after using Windows for a looong time, wondering what software I should be looking at to manipulate photos. From what I read iPhoto (Or Picasa for Mac?) will let me organise stuff perfectly fine but is a little basic for editing, Photoshop is WAY too expensive.
Which leaves what other options? I have PaintshopPro (old version, 7) on Windows, AFAICS its not available on Mac, Irfanview(free) which is excellent for basics like resizing (I presume iPhoto handles this?), and DCEnhance which is also free and does some automagic type changes to bring more detail out of shadows or put it back into highlights - any equivalents, either for free or pay?
Looks like Aperture might do the business, is that the 'tool of choice' for people who dont want to pay or have the large learning curve for Photoshop?
I have the latest iMac - OS X Mavericks. I recently shifted from Windows to iMac. I am a photographer and have thousands of pictures in my external hard-drive (Western Digital) that I have backed up by folder name (YYYY-MM-DD) using windows. But, now I have started using my iMac and planning to backup my new pictures stored in iPhoto library. I am not sure how can get the original pictures by year, month and day from iPhotos and copy them in external drive using the same folder structure - YYYY-MM-DD.
Not sure how to do this simpler. At this time I tried to go to iPhoto, then do Reveal in finder, go to that folder, select all my files, copy them, go to external harddrive, create a folder - YYYY-MM-DD and copy them. I can do this for each hundreds of folder sitting in my iPhoto.

I have an iMac desktop with OS X version 10.9.4 Mavericks operating system. Processor 2.06 core 2 duo Memory 4GB 1067 MHx startup disk hard drive.
Problem is I deleted some photos from my hard drive to free up space, thinking I could access them from my backup drive if I needed to. However, when I try to get the photos through my TimeMchine backup drive, it won't let me, saying it's not the original library. How do I access my old backed up photos?
I am in the learning curve with the mac pro and that was expected, I wanted the mac for photography and video edit. I certainly hope that the news of Photo Journals for IOS devices will also soon allow us to store, edit and save our photos not only on IOS devices, but also on our laptops, MacAirs and desktops.

I had a bunch of photos stored on my digital camera that I wanted to upload onto my computer. Only I had a little under 2 GB of free space on my startup disk, which was not going to be enough, so I uploaded them to an iPhoto library I created on my external hard drive. The free space that Finder recognized on my startup disk dropped to around 1 GB during the time it took to upload the 1300 or so photos onto the external drive, which was slightly surprising in that it's never taken so short a time, but I restarted my computer and it went back to recognizing the right amount of free space, like it always has after restarting. Everything was working just as I expected.
However, when I edited about 1000 of those photos in iPhoto, somehow this ate up almost all of the hard drive space on my LAPTOP, not my external drive, and restarting my computer did absolutely no good. I am literally running on 13 MB of free space as I type this.
The photos are definitely in my external iPhoto library, not on my startup disk. I searched my startup for "IMG" (my camera names photos "img_###" to see if for some reason iPhoto was copying the pictures I edited to my laptop, but none of these new pictures came up. I even went into the files I'd accessed yesterday (it's past midnight here) to see if I could figure it out, but all the photos I clicked on were on the external disk. That iPhoto is copying the pictures I edit somewhere is the only possible solution I can think of. But whatever it is that is taking up all my free space, I can't find it.
Meanwhile, and similarly inexplicably, the copy of Cocktail I have downloaded is telling me that I am currently using only 71% of my available disk space, which uh, has basically never been true ... Cocktail has always told me that I'm using something depressing (yet accurate) like 93% of my available disk space.
starting with my iMac permanently sending crash reports, unbidden and unstoppable. I started with 10.4, and I'm now on 10.6 in after repeated attempt to get a useable mac. All was well, until I included another external disk to the time machine backups. It took nearly two days, then seemingly with around 5Gb to go, it suddenly stopped and said it had finished. I logged out and went to work, coming back to find it was still locked in a plain blue screen. I left it overnight, still like it this morning, so I did a forced shutdown. It wouldn't restart. I rebooted from the 10.6 disk, but it said the hard disc was irrecoverable and I needed to erase. I erased and reinstalled, but when it came to restoring from Time Machine, it didn't recognise the backups. Checking on the backup disk it has a folder indicated it is still in a backup. If I try to enter a different backup through the Time Machine icon in the backup, it too says I can't because it's in the middle of a backup.
Is there any way I can delete this folder and get it to let me back in? I don't want to just delete it without some guidance as it's taken me weeks of reinstall just to get this far, having persuaded the likes of TurboCad to let me re-install from a download. I feel I'm on the threshold of having to start all over again. I attached a sticky (I have no apps to speak of at the moment) which had an image of the error message, showing two icons within minutes of each other, one showing a completed backup, the other a message icon stating backup in progress. I don't think the image on the sticky can be accessed...
is it possible to back up my iMac to my windows pc (which I use as a home file server)? The iMac is running latest version OSX and the PC Windows 7. I've got hard-wired gigabit lan connection trough a few Mac's and my WinPcServer via a gigabit swicht.

I use an external hard drive for Time Machine backups and to store some larger video files in a folder called Videos. The Videos folder on the external drive is now locked and I can't unlock it. I go to Get Info, hit the lock icon and enter my password, but the "Locked" checkbox is greyed out in the General section. In the Sharing and Permissions section, instead of displaying my name, it says "Fetching . . ." and I can't change the Privilege from "Write Only".

I am switching from windows 7 to a powermac g5 with 10.5.8. I copied all my libraries from widnows 7 (photos,music,videos,documents) into my external drive. However the folders have a locked icon when I view it from osx. My drive is formatted in ntfs if that matters.

I can't seem to edit any pictures with Preview anymore since I upgraded to Lion. Every time I try to save an image after resizing or whatever, it says the file is locked. If I check the info of the file the "locked" checkmark is unchecked. And I have all the permissions to the file. Tried everything, switched the "lock after 2 weeks" thing of in Time Machine (even though tha would probably not help: images I took today are still "locked" in Preview), tried copying them and then saving them, and tried to lock them and then unlock them, but I can't seem to edit and save them.

View 2 Replies View RelatedGetting a message within photoshop that files cannot be saved as they are locked. I check the same files with 'Get Info' and the locked file box is unchecked. I have changed file permissions on the entire disc so that everyone can read/write but still the same message. Tried terminal command to uncheck flags also to no avail. I can do save as but a little frustrating. Is there a workaround to get all my files back onside?
This is a new disc that I may have installed without due care to permissions/ownership when I formatted it.

I am using an Intel MacBook 2.4 Mhz 2Gb RAM and OS 10.6.5. Time Machine has never successfully backed-up so I have been using Backup which works fine. However I now want to restore just a couple of photos from my iphoto library. Is this possible because it only seems to offer the option of restoring the whole library?

I bought a Time Capsule and thought I would just move the photos to it. I also have other photos on two separate hard drives from an old PC. I moved some of the photos to the Time Capsule, but now I cannot view them like I can the photos on my MacBook. When I had a PC, I would just use the PC viewing program (that came with the computer) and select a drive and view the photos, but with iphoto I cannot seem to figure out how to view the photos that are on a separate drive (Time Capsule). So now I have a Time Capsule with about 9000 photos (half of what is on my MacBook) and I do not know how to view them. Also, I would like to back everything up on a web based platform like Carbonite. If anyone has any advise, ideas, suggestions, comments, etc.

I've checked the permissions for both the image and the folders, and I appear to have the correct permissions (see screenshot). I am working on clearing off some hard drive space, and my first step was to remove some unneeded items from an external HD to make some space there. When I drag the folder I'm trying to delete to the trash, I first get a message that the items will be immediately deleted (I think because my internal HD is quite full?) and that's fine because I do want to delete these, so I say OK. It starts the process of deleting, and counting how many files it's deleting, then gives me a message that the operation cannot be completed because item "xx" is locked. The only solutions I have found on here involve unlocking "xx" but my problem is, when I search the computer and/or the external for item "xx" nothing is found. I'm really not sure if the issue with item "xx" is an issue with the drive or with the computer, or what to do about it?? If it's the drive, I suppose I could back up what I do want to save from the drive then re-format it?
