Intel Mac :: "My Passport" Damaged Drive Needs To Be Retrieved?
Apr 18, 2012
"My Passport" 1TB - will not read on the desktop after dropping it (accidentally slipped from hands and only 6 inches from the floor) the device shows its hooked up on the system profiler on my iMac, I need files on it I had not backed up yet. Can I retrieve files from a "My Passport" that sounds like its trying to connect and makes a high pitch grinding sound and beeps like a disc is not moving correctly?. I bought a new one and tried a new cord on it and still won't fire up. so eliminated the cord issue (the drive dropped off from the 3USB Cord connection in my hands) I am desperate to get the info off it...

I currently have a 500gb in my 2008 pre-unibody HD bay, and another 500gb drive in the optibay. I would like to purchase the 1tb 2.5 drive after hearing that it will fit in the pre-unibody's optibay. I search on Newegg below, and I am confused on why a cased 1tb WD drive is cheaper than the WD 1tb Scorpio Blue bare drive?

I backup my photography on a WD My Passport. I have only used PC's with this in the past, I am now trying to back up some more files and it won't let me copy them to the drive. The permissions say that I have read only access on my Mac. I have read some threads, and they all say that I have format the hard drive to change the permissions and that I will not be able to copy over files bigger than 4G. I have RAW files that can get quite large so limiting the size is an option.

Just bought a Retina Imac with Yosemite and now the WD My Passport external hard drive won't work with it anymore.Â
At first it started to copy files, very slowly though, and then would just get stuck despite updating the firmware on the drive.Â
It works fine on my Mac Book Pro running Mavericks so it must have something to do with Yosemite ....

I'm having the most difficult time transferring projects and events from a 13" MacBook Pro (Late 2011) to an iMac (late 2013) I have moved the projects and referenced events to an external "WD my Passport for Mac" Hard drive. It holds 1TB.Â
In Final Cut Pro X 10.1.1 on the new iMac, the device is not recognized. I tried updating Mavericks and Final Cut. I've tried repairing the permissions, repairing both disk(s) deleting render files, restarting the disk, disconnecting the hard drive, restarting the computer. etc to no avail.

I have a 20" Alu imac, bought September 2008.
A week ago I've been watching a movie with my girlfriend, and the CD suddenly got stuck. Now at first I tried to get it out by poking around in there with a credit card (yes, idiot I know) and I'm afraid my drive might be slightly damaged. Is there any way the iMac can scan if the drive if functioning 100% as intended?

I dropped my Mac Book and broke the screen. More importantly it has also damaged the hard drive. I took it to a repairers who could not read it. And yes of course I am one of those idiots who keep everything on it but does not back it up. So some questions: How screwed am I? Are these data retrieval companys you see advertised any good? Which is the best one in the UK? And how much will it cost?

I'm both elated and pissy at the same time. Something happened to my mac when I was traveling, be it a latent hardware flaw, damage, or some other random act, and my mac OSX partition just, well, died. Unbootable, disk utility spends over a day trying to fix the boot record. The Bootcamp windows partition is fritzy, but it at least mounts and periodically can be booted from. I bought an external usb hard drive, loaded SL onto that, and have my mac back up and running again, but no data to speak of. So based on numerous recommendations, I paid good money to purchase Disk Warrior 4. Nothing, just told me the Macintosh HD partition on the hard drive was damaged, but that bootcamp could still be read.

My 6 months old macbook pro 13 hard drive was damaged. It was replaced at the apple store and in order to recover my information they suggested to buy a "cradle" to download the information or use it as a separate drive. Does anyone know the spec or point me in the right direction on where to find one?

My iMac has been crashing a lot lately and finally it's hard drive just up and failed. I have been doing hourly Time Machine backups to a concatenated RAID set (2 USB drives of 1 TB each). However, I think the iMac crashed while backing up and hosed the RAID controller.I've since plugged the two disks of the RAID into my MacBook Pro to see if I can repair them. I can see the individual disks of the RAID in Disk Utility. I can even verify and repair them. But i can't do that with the RAID in the sidebar, and it won't mount on the desktop. When I try to eject it from the DIsk Utility file menu, it says disks are in use.
I'm pretty sure my data on the two disks is intact, but I can't seem to get the RAID to mount as the single concatenated set on a desktop, which makes it inaccessble. Is there a way to repair the JBOD RAID without losing all my data, so I can then restore from the latest backup to my hosed iMac?

I use my Mid 2010 iMac for virtualizing routers. I noticed that with the 4gb of RAM that was already installed in the iMac was not enough. So, I did some research and found out that, my iMac can hold up to 16gb of RAM. I did some more research and found out how to replace the memory in my iMac. Then, I went to Micro Center and bought 16gb of RAM and brought it back to my apartment. Now, I powered off my iMac and unplugged the power cord, flipped the iMac upside down and unscrewed the three screws that were holding the memory cover on. After removing the memory cover, and pulling back the memory tabs/flaps, I shined a light down in the memory slots and found one memory slot that looked damaged. I was not completely sure, so I went ahead and removed the old memory by pulling hard on the memory tabs/flaps, and the memory was unseated.
I remove the memory and replace it with four, 4gb sticks of memory. Once I powered on the iMac, a memory beep sounded off. So, I unplugged the power cord from the iMac and removed two of the four memory sticks out of the iMac. The two sticks of memory I removed was out of BANK 0/DIMM0 and BANK 1/DIMM0. BANK 0/DIMM0, is the one that is damaged and my hardware warranty has expired. I bought this iMac damage, and now it won’t support 16gb of memory. What should I do? By the way, the other 8gb of memory in the other two BANKs are working.

I've had my MacBook Pro for a couple months, and everything works perfectly fine with it, except the DVD drive. Whenever I try watching movies on it, it always keeps skipping over nonexistent "damaged areas", even though nothing is wrong with the actual movie DVD. I watch the movies on my TV, and they still work fine, so the problem has to be something with the Mac laptop.

It looks like the surface of a few keys has been eaten away by acid, I can only imagine it has happened because my fingernails touch the keys through normal typing, but this is completely unavoidable unless I type like a one-fingered man. It mainly seems to happen on the A and S keys, this has happened on my white MacBook, Wireless Aluminium keyboard and Wired Aluminium keyboard, but as they are so expensive to replace I am not willing to buy a whole new keyboard for this. Also, one of my cmd keys has an odd stain on it, possibly from a crumb or droplet of orange juice which I'm sure I would have wiped off immediately, I wouldn't have expected plastic to stain so easily. Has anyone else found this with their Aluminium keyboard?Â
I suppose there's nothing much I can do to prevent it (I refuse to use a silicone cover), so my option appears to be just to replace those keys damaged through wear and tear however I can. Are the keys interchangeable between these three keyboards? (Wireless / Wired Aluminium, white 2008 MacBook Core2Duo) The main keys look the same apart from the bottom row on the Wired Aluminium keyboard which are a bit wider.

Disk Warrior reported a damaged resource header that cannot be repaired. The resource header is in an "older" file format (rsrc). I have been having fairly frequent freezes of the system and Disk Utility reporting a corrupted HD which Disk Unility is always able to repair and report the HD to be O.K. Could the damaged header be the cause of the freezes? If so, can anything be done about it if Warrior says it cannot be repaired?

I got SMART warning about my hard disk, I got it replaced by a shop, but said I would do OS restore myself. (cant afford cost )Thought it would be simple - but it is anything but.  It appears my install DVD is damaged, so was not able to boot with Grey OS install disk - holding the C key.I managed to get iMac to boot up using the old disk - using firewire dock. However I was not able to restore old disk and OS to new disk, Due to IO read error.(this is why I had the SMART warning). So I am unable to get the OS on the new HD using the old disk or the DVD as these are both damaged.  The computer is running, so I thought I would try buying and downloading LION - then using the migration tool . The download is still running after 2 days.I went to apple store, and was told that they cannot replace DVD , so I should bring in the iMac = and pay for the restore. Dont wish to do this. As I have the computer and OS running, is there anything I can do to get a time machine restore from another backup disk (USB).

Just to give anybody who doesn't know a heads up. The 750gb passport se drive is too tall for a macbook. At least my model (3,1).
Can anybody point me in the direction of another good external drive that is 750 or bigger that will fit?
Also carbon copier reformatted the drive for the mac. How do I change it back and reset it to factory settings?
