I was wondering how I could file share, or make the whole Hard Drive (HDD) accessible to another computer. The two other computers I have are a Toshiba Laptop with Ethernet and USB, and a iMac Intel with Firewire, USB, and Ethernet. Putting these to use along with:Three Ethernet Cables Now how do I get the whole HDD visible to the others computers (either/both) and be able to write to it? Also, I do not want to use CDs and have no CDs that came with the computers. I want to put Xubuntu on the eMac and Debian on the iMacs and erase the rest of the Hard Drives. The computers getting this are the iMac G3s and the eMac G4 in my Signature.

I was just wondering if any other macrumorsmembers have been in the situation where there's no wifi, no decent 3G, but ethernet ports available to use, but you don't have a computer handy? Would it be possible that you could create an ethernet cable one end, dock the other, and literally connect e.g. an iPhone into the ethernet? At my place of work, there's no signal (dodgy GPRS/flakey Edge), some wifi, but in halls of residence, you get 1 ethernet port, and you can't put a wireless router onto it. It would seem that it would be an interesting solution, if it was possible.

I got my macbook during November of 2009 but two weeks ago it started shutting down by itself once I touch the magsafe of the macbook or remove the magsafe. All it needs is a simple touch and it shuts down. When it does shut down, the light indicator doesn't come on anymore. I have to keep removing the magsafe, and plugging it back in like 20 times until it starts charging again. So now I just let it fully charge every time I use it since any sudden movement will cause it to shut down. I will be making an appointment next week at the apple store because I had no time to go these past 2 weeks. I never dropped it and take good care of it. I am just wondering what might be the cause of this? I hope they do not take weeks to fix the mac since I have a lot of homework to do

2010 i7 15'' MBP. I've been connected to the internet wireless with my Airport Extreme from day 1, but today I wanted to give the ethernet port a try and it just didn't work. The ethernet cable is recognized, but it says there is no IP. I do not know my IP settings or any of that. What do I do?

I have tried searching for a similar question but have not been able to find an exact match. I have a new MacBook, a PS3, a Virgin Mobile USB and an Ethernet cable and I thought putting them all together so I could use the PS3 online would be easy! Could someone please give me a step by step process of what I am meant to be doing.

I'm here at university and the wifi here sucks! it is so slow, it is working. However there is an ethernet port and I did connect to it this morning. But, this evening I tried connecting again and it wouldnt let me!At my university they require you to put in your student ID and pw in order for you to use the internet for both wi-fi and ethernet. But when i tried this evening it dint ask for my student ID or password. I went to settings and it did say that there was a connection and that "Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet"
i dont understand how come now it isnt working. I aksed my classmate nextdoor if his internet port was working through the ethernet port he said it was.... i am not that tech savy so keep vocabulary to something simple lmaooo.

I've got an issue with my TC setup, I cannot for the life of me get it to see the cable modem and setup the WAN access. If you will pardon me I will cut n paste the lengthy description I left on the apple support list as I feel it is pretty thorough. I think I know my way around networks and dhcp but this setup doesn't yield any logs so I can't troubleshoot! I'm on Virgin Media 20megs and I can't connect using my brand new TC.
Modem: Ambit 256
Time capsule : 1 tB, firmware 7.5
Test router : Netgear WGR614V9
MBP alubook 15 inch late 2008
I tried connecting with the test router and the MBP alubook to the modem and both can pickup the ethernet connection and get a DHCP lease after some coaxing (cold-start the modem first, then cold-start the router/mbp). But I'm having no luck with the airport extreme base station. Hard reset / factory reset / soft reset, any startup order, nothing works. I even left the devices offline for an hour before doing another round of testing. I tried several cables (including a crossover cable) and all configurations work apart from the ones involving the time capsule. Both the modem AND the TC ethernet ports light-up with a green light... but somehow the TC doesn't negociate its DHCP or even basic ethernet connectivity. I see there's a firmware 7.4.2 on the support site for the TC but I'd rather not downgrade the unit.
Here are the console logs from the MBP when it connects to the modem (yes, my MBP is named awesome, because frankly it is):

I have a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.5.6 I connect to the internet with an ethernet cable direct into the wall. When I open the network connection box, it says the ethernet is connected, but it will not load any web pages. Friday I was using it fine and then got off. Came back a bit later and could no longer connect to any pages. I have spoken to my internet provider and they say my settings are fine. I am online on my desktop that connects using the same ethernet cable. I am not having any trouble connecting on it. I went and bought a new ethernet cable, just in case it was the problem

Okay, so I'm using a late 2013 27-inch iMac, Intel Core i5, running OS X 10.10 Yosemite Beta 2. I've usually just used wifi, but decided to make the switch to a wired ethernet connection. Now the Network settings shows no option for ethernet, so I added a new ethernet connection in the settings. I was then met with a "Cable Unplugged" notice. And I have tried everything to fix it. First of all, I've tested 3 different ethernet cables, and none worked, but all three worked on my 2 Macbook Pros, both running 10.10, and there was no problem. I've cleared my PRAM, reset my power, checked that my ethernet pins weren't damaged, and every other suggestion I could find.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

I have two G5s, one next to my ethernet/DSL line which plugs in directly for internet, and a second out in the living room where there is no DSL line. However, the house has wireless via an Extreme and two Xpress socket-plug-ins. My mac guy told me that I should be able to hook the G5 in the living room directly into the Xpress next to it via an ethernet cable (the living room G5 does not have a wireless card in it) and the wireless internet should link up via the Xpress to ethernet cable to living room G5. ? He said to make sure I had the ethernet configure box set to "using DHCP" which it is and it should automatically find the right IP address. When I try it, I get nothing though, just a message that there doesn't seem to be a network connection.

Two days ago my iBook G4 1Ghz started to have a big problem in turning it on: when I pushed the power button the fan started to whirl speedier than usual and nothing happened. The monitor stayed turned off and the startup "Boeing" did not sound. I tried to reset the PMU and the PRAM several times and the iBook finally turned on (I still don't know why!). I did a hardware test and no problems were detected.
Then, I connected my connection Ethernet cable and the computer crashed down. Now I am in the same situation that I've just described: I can't turn the computer on anymore and the fan starts wheeling. I also showed this problem to a local Apple center and they told me that the motherboard is dead. I am still not convinced, because one time I have been able to restart the iBook. Is the motherboard really broken?

I connect to the internet mainly through an ethernet cable, connected to my own base for ethernet connections (Might be a router, but doesn't connect directly to the internet) which is connected to the main Linksys router on the other side of my house, which even has a wireless connection.
Regardless, this setup has worked without issue for a long time now, but all of a sudden now, I cannot connect to the internet (On my Mac).
I have tried unplugging the routers, for extended periods of time, plugging them back in, but I cannot connect to the internet. Whats awkward, is that when I check the Network settings in the System Preferences, it says clearly is that the Ethernet Cable is connected (Which it is), and as a backup, I have even connected to my Wireless Network through AirPort (Which says it is connected), but I cannot connect to the internet through Firefox, or any instant messaging service.
On the main computer, with the main router, the internet works fine. When I try to load Firefox on my Mac, it sometimes takes a long time loading (On a blank screen), and never loads usually (With occasional loads, but usually does not connect).

When you get home at your desk, put your MBP on the table plugging it to an external monitor or not, do you keep it running on WiFi or do you plug in an ethernet cable for your notebook? I am on a 25mbps line in my home and i find that when i plug in the cable my internet connection is more stable, faster and doesn't drop out sometimes. Because, sometimes on Wifi, websites take a little longer to load or it seems to not load at all. While on the ethernet cable everything is just speed of light instant.
I have also noticed that using vmware when i go away from the computer and puts windows to sleep, when i get back, it takes a while for windows to recognize the airport vmware driver and connect back to internet, while with the ethernet cable it is just instant (again). Noticed this while running windows live messenger and the time it takes to connect back. I also noticed that transferring files from my windows vista desktop computer to my macbook was alot faster on ethernet cable than on the wifi connection, even though my router supports 54mbps wifi. So are you guys satisfied with your wifi? Or do you use an ethernet cable for stability? Or am i the only one with minor wifi problems?

I just got the new macbook, with snow leopord, and is running on 10.6.2. My internet is really slow when I connect it to my linksys router. It is a wrt54g router. And I am using a WPA2 password. The internet works fine with the three other laptops in my house. But is slow when I connect with wireless to the router. But when I connect to the router with a ethernet cable it works really fast.

I was wondering if anyone knows if its possible to share my LAN internet to an XBOX 360 using the Apple USB ethernet cable (for the Macbook Air) on my Macbook Pro 13"? I've tried several routers, and all have them have failed me giving me massive timeouts and sudden disconnects. I think this should be a good solution.
