I used to have a password on my Macbook but I got annoyed of having to type it in every time I closed/opened the lid and the Macbook woke up. I got rid of the password through my system settings, but the prompt kept coming up when I opened the Macbook, but there was no password. I would just leave the password field blank and hit enter. Okay, no big deal. I just restarted my Macbook because it was lagging with video, and its asking me for a password to start up. I tried leaving it blank and just hitting Log In, the prompt shakes back and forth. I tried my old password before I got rid of it, the prompt just shakes. I don't have a password, why am I getting a prompt on startup and how do I get past it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy iMac chimes when I press the start button but the screen doesn't come on. It's making a whirring noise so it's doing something. There's a DVD in it but it won't come out when i press the eject button on my keyboard. The iMac also doesn't show up on the network of my MacBook which it usually does. I was having a few problems earlier this week with the screen doing strange things - occasionally turning off, then coming back on. It was suggested that it might be a dying logic board but I tried a Apple Hardware Test this morning but it said no problems found. I have some files backed up but desperately need to get some recent documents off it [I know, I should have backed it up more often ]. Is there any way to get access to the files on the hard disc?
View 19 Replies View RelatedI have a slightly older Macbook Pro, on OSX 10.5.8.I have a bunch of video files on a wireless networked hard drive and the directory mapped to my desktop for easy access.I also have VLC installed for video playback. All the files are *.m4v.
When I click to open one of these files it starts copying the whole file over the network to my iTunes, and insisting on opening from iTunes. If I click on File -> Open With -> it shows iTunes as the default.I can click on File -> Open With -> VLC and this works just fine. But how do I change the default video player? All I want to do is stream it over my internal home network, I don't want copy the darn file every time I want to play something.

I'm having a small problem with my Mac. Every time I start up Aperture seems to open automatically. I've made sure it's not in the list of start up programs and it only started doing this since yesterday (monday).
View 5 Replies View RelatedEvery morning when I turn on my new imac, the fan starts and won't stop. The only way to turn it off is to shut it down again and restart. Seems to work, but wanted to know if there is a way to make the fan taper off instead of having to constantly turn off my computer .

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a brother MFC-240 printer which I loathe. It has been one driver issue after another since the day I got it. Anyhow, everytime I boot the computer up, the install wizard starts and tries to recognize the printer with some MFL Pro-Suite software (which never works). I have deleted the printer from system preferences, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to stop this MFL pro-suite software from trying to install with each restart. Once I get this sorted out, I will toss the printer onto the road, and never look back.
any thoughts?
So, when I start up my Macbook mid-2010, I log in first, and after 30 seconds the stop sign comes up. I am able to log in as a guest user.
When I load up the install disc of Snow Leopard and choose for Disk Utility, I can see the disk, but it sais it is not mounted? When I click on 'mount', it doesn't respond. see the following screenshot for more info:

When I log in using Lion, Mail, Entourage, and ICal open on my desktop.I already tried unchecking the restore windows box under system preferences/general; sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. The only way to stop it seems to be to uncheck the similar box that appears when you shut down the computer, but you have to do it each time, and I think it doesn't always work either. The options features in the dock items don't seem to work--they're already unchecked, and the windows still open. I don't want everyone else in my family to see my mail as soon as the computer opens and it's really annoying besides.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI had an image from an older macbook (10.5.4) and I put it in a newer MacBook which I assume was could not boot as far back as 10.5.4, so I updated it by booting 10.5.6 on an external and running the combo 10.5.7 update on the MacBook's internal drive. I boot and after staying on a blue screen for a while, it goes black and shows me a command prompt and I can see all the processes starting up. then it goes back to blue and works normally. On shutdown, I see the prompt again. I cannot boot into safe mode or single user mode for some reason. When holding down the s and shift it still does the same thing. I can however still use option to boot from a different drive.
The computer runs perfectly normally once booted. I just don't want to see the command line stuff. So is there some way to stop it, or hide it?

I received an update request for a new version of the Adobe Flash player this morning. I accepted it and the installation seemed to work fine. The only special was that the last 5% of the installation took some minutes to install.
Minutes later the system (MAC OS Lion) sent a warning that my startup disk is nearly full. The disk had about 150GB free disk space. When I checked it with the finder my disk space was about 350 MB and declining. I disconnected the MacBook from the internet and the the declining of the available disk size stopped.
If I check the disk information (using the finder) of the harddrive and it showed only 350MB as free. If I check the size of the folders on the top layer and add them together I should still have about 150GB of free disk space.

This might be a "silly" question but here it is: I get this message: your startup disk is full. Do I need to delete files? What there is to do ? Where to look? Is it normal, my Macbook is getting really hot?

I can't for the life of me find out why this keeps coming up? I turned off file share, checked the applications bar, and can't track it? There is a box that pops up with three people holding hands, says: There was a problem connecting to the server "con-sd". The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.

There is a new humming sound coming from my parents iMac, I think it's the processor cooler but I'm not sure. It could be the hard drive as well, I just know it kicks up sometimes when there is a lot of activity. The problem is they don't do a lot on the computer so it scares them.
They are convinced that it is going to die because it's soo old, I think under two years, but this is the second computer they owned. The first was the first 20" G5 iMac that, instead of turning it off the correct way, they just unplugged from the wall outlet. Needless to say it died, but they think it was because their son in law used it too much. I try to tell them that it's because how they turned it off, but they didn't like their son in law, who is now an ex-son in law, so they blame it on him. Yes, I know, my parents are the last people to own a computer.
They also don't want to spend any money on their computer, so worse case scenioro, taking it to the Genius Bar without this computer being under warranty and having them replace the processor fan and/or the hard drive, what would it cost? I think it might just require a new fan for the processor cooler, but what if they need to replace a lot more?
