Just want to record voice with my built in iMac microphone...guidance? Eventual goal is to use audio voice track for FCE, but want to lay down an audio track for a placeholder to measure length (time) and make some queues. Garage Band or something else.

My iMac 27inch, Mid 2010 2.93 ghz i7 running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3, doesn't shut down or restart properly. Once I choose the option in apple menu it goes into white screen with a wheel spinning, it freezes there. The only to proceed is by manually holding the power button. Checked and repaired all disk permissions in standard and recovery mode, reset PRAM and SMC, did couple of cleaning procedures of cache and relative, did a whole virus running procedure. Cant figure out what has happened. It happens after I operate computer after turning it on, but it does shutdown and restart if its done straight away after turning it on without opening anything. I tried to monitor maybe it some software that makes act like that, but didn't find a link.

My iMac shut itself down last night while in sleep mode. It's rarely ever turned off. I cannot get it started today. I'm not the most tech saavy person but can follow instructions if someone could walk me through it. Â
Purchased in 2006 and has worked well until now. AppleCare has expired.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an Intel Imac G5 2.66 gHz 2 core duo running 10.6.3. I am unable to get it shut down or sleep. Choosing either results in the display blacking out, the fans run for about 1 second and then everything come back on as if nothing has happened. I've reset the Pram and Vram, disconnected all USB and Firewire devices, tried it with and without file sharing and Airport operating. A 'hard' shutdown with the power button works fine. I have checked for any firmware updates but mine is fine. This happened once before and clearing out some files from deleted apps cured the problem but it's back now.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an iMac running 10.7.3 that will not shut down or restart using the apple menu. The only way to get this machine to shut down is to hold down the on/off button on the back of the computer. This has been a problem for quite some time and may have started with Lion, but I’m not sure. .

While working on my iMac, it suddenly went off. No warning at all. I've tried all the basic stuff and nothing happens. Holding the power button in and I don't hear the normal sounds. Thought it might have overheated but after it's cooled down, still nothing.

I have added all of the updates and patches but the problem continues. It started with one application and now it's happening to others where they shut down suddenly at start-up and have to be restared and the windows restored. It's a brand new computer and wasn't doing this initially.

My iMac runs perfectly fine; more or less as it did when it was new. In OS X, when I shut down the computer, the fan runs at full speed indefinitely, unless I unplug it or boot back up. When running, the fan is perfectly normal (increases speed a bit when doing something taxing). I've never heard it at full speed before until this started happening. After following the SMC reset procedure with no luck (I'd like to add that the SMC reset only says it relates to fan problems when the computer is ON), I searched a bit and noticed there are one or two cases where a problem like mine was believed to be a motherboard issue, and therefore a costly fix.Â
However, here's the fun part. When booted into Windows 8.1, shutting down the iMac does not cause this issue to occur. It stays silent, as it should, even if I disconnect then reconnect the power. This leads me to believe it's unlikely to be a motherboard issue. However I've wiped, restored, and reinstalled fresh copies of Mountain Lion, Mavericks, and Windows 8.1, and the result is still the same: if I don't want to have to unplug it from the wall, then I have to use Windows to shut it down.Â
So then, my questions are these:
-What is the difference between shutting down from OS X and shutting down from Windows?
-Is an operating system allowed/able to touch BIOS settings?
-Is it possible to still be a hardware problem, given this difference?Â
My default OS is OS X, and it makes no difference if I change that to Windows. I also did a PRAM reset, even though that has nothing to do with fans...
