Intel Mac :: Won't Shut Down Completely?
Mar 29, 2012
When I shut down my iMac, everything seems to shut down ok until it gets to the grey screen and then the wheel just keeps spinning. I have repaired permissions but am at a loss for what else to try.Â

My macbook pro won't shut down completely. It stops at the blue screen-when left to continue shutting down, it drains the battery. I have to power down by holding the power button during this process.

How do you totally shut off resume? I've tried unchecking the box at logout, and in system preferences, and it just ignores it.

I believe that I shut down my macbook but was mistaken and it did not shut down completely. The next day I opened it up and the screen wouldn't turn on like it usually does after simply being closed without powering down. I wasn't around to use it till a day later, being today, and I thought it was just a low battery problem. Now the battery is fully charged and yet it is still in the same state.
There is one light on but it is not bright like it is when sleep mode is not taking place. Also, it sounds like its running; I can hear the fan running but both the keyboard and screen are refusing to turn on. I've gone on the apple support page and have attempted what they suggest, but it didn't work. I don't use any plug in devices like a mouse, the only things I plug in are the battery charger and my IPod.

My TC has been working flawlessly for some 2 years now, but last night it was all too much. It is completely shut down, and unplugging the power and reconnecting doesn't make a difference. There is no orange or green light, and no sound from the unit. Luckily enough I purchased it at the same time as I picked up my MacBook Air, to which I did buy the AppleCare package, and my questions are: What can/should I try regrading my TC? Is my TC covered by the AppleCare agreement for my MBA?

So when I charge my macbook pro retina display too a 100% and then when I come back the next day and turn it on the battery has drained by itself by like 7%. Sometimes they are even drastic changes like 15-20%? I have just bought this macbook and is only a week and a half old? What should I do?

So far, this isn't going well for me. I have, at random points, had the screen completely shut off (go black) and no ability to bring it back on. I have also seen heat problems, and I'm really not doing anything except for outlook. Has anyone had the screen fail on them like this? It doesn't happen on the Mac side -- just when running Win7 in bootcamp with the latest drivers. Somewhat frustrating -- it just happened when I tried to open a PNG using windows picture viewer: bam, screen to black. I am guessing graphics driver failure.

Would have checked this myself but I haven't gotten around to installing Boot Camp 3.1 yet.
Anyone with a uMBP try to see if Boot Camp 3.1 allows the keyboard light to completely shut off in Windows 7?
I described it more here.

I installed windows through bootcamp and partitioned my hard drive to about a 300Gb/600Gb windows and mac respectively. After a while i decided to remove the windows partition. As I was repartitioning the Hard Drive through disk utility my mac froze and went to a gray screen so I restarted it. Disk utility says that the process finished however it does not recognise the 300Gb I used for windows. i.e. Disk utility says there is one partition, and that the total capacity is about 1Tb.
However the spaced used and space available adds up to 600Gb, its like the mac thinks that it is repartitoned to just 1, but not allowing me to acces that 300Gb. so my question is how do i completely strip back the hard drive to basic factory settings (iv backed up all my data to an external drive) so I can reinstall the mac operating system and repair the drive to make use of its full capacity, then re install from my backed up external drive.

When I press the start button the screen goes on and I hear the chime but after 2 to 3 seconds the screen goes completely black. the fan in working the red light under the mouse is on. led # 1,2,3 are all on. I can't find my original system disk, so I inserted an original system disk from my macbook and tried pressing "C" at start up. But what ever I do the screen goes on for 2 or 3 second and after that goes black and stays black.

I have tried several times to dump my trash. The message comes up to empty all or just unlocked items. I select the all option and it begins to empty the trash bin. But soon after starting, the trash -------- bar showing how many trash items have been emptied shuts down. When I go back to check the trash bin, there is still a lot of trash that hasn't been dumped. How do I fix my trash bin so it empties everything out?

I have a problem with my iMac 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (2 GB 667 MHz DDR 2 SDRAM), running OSX 10.6.5. OSX crashes and freezes all the time. Nothing works anymore. Sometimes it just freezes, and I can only move my cursor, but nothing reacts anymore. Sometimes the screen blacks (or sometimes blanks) out or shows the weird moving colours as shown on the photo I just took below: After restart, it often happens again and again. Then the iMac is fine for a couple of days, before it freezes again. Can anyone diagnose the problem from the info above?

I have an old (late 2006) 20" iMac. Problems started a few weeks ago - first the computer would freeze and crash. Eventually I started getting either a circle/slash sybol or the question mark folder every time I tried to reboot. Eventually I concluded that the hard drive had gone bad. So I bought a new 1TB Barracude from OWC and installed it following instruction found on [url]....
Now I can't do anything. I tried booting from a OSX 10.6 install disk, but the machine simply spits it out after about 30 seconds and gives me the "?" folder. So I got my hands on 10.4.5 Universal Install disk and tried that, thinking that maybe the older machine needed an older version to start from (sounds logical at least). Nothing. It doesn't spit that one out, but still ends up with the flashing "?" folder after a minute or two. I've tried holding down C on startup. Same result. I've also tried holding option to get the startup manager, but that doesn't work either. I just end up back at "?". I really hate "?"

In trying to send an oversized video via email (exceeded 25 MG) size limit, I got an error message. I thought I deleted the email. However, whenever email is open, the message continually gets recovered, blocking any email from being recieved. I am able to create and send emails. Internet checks out ok. Using AOL.iMap. It seems that I am not able to interrupt the continual attempts to send the original email.
