It seemed like it had just died pretty much. Today, on a whim, I decided to try a disc in the drive, and it works! Apple repair had given it up for dead, so why do you think it came back?

Sep 9, 2010if any of you have this problem when backing up iTunes. When it ejects a disc and tells you to insert an empty disc... my machine keeps spitting out the new disc. It will eventually take it and continue backing up. Sometimes I end up having to feed it the same disc as much as twenty times. Do any of you have this problem and has anyone found a fix?

Feb 20, 2012My iMac is currently rejecting (spitting out any and all) CDs but accepting and playing DVDs. I have re-set the system management (shut down, unplugged, etc.) and, though I read somewhere to re-set power managment unit, cannot see direct instrucitons on how this should be done on an iMac. Couple of curious points: First, even newly played or burned discs have been emerging a little scratched for as long as I can remember. And, sometimes when playng a DVD, it has to "skip over damaged area."

Mar 11, 2012my iMac won't read some dvds. Specifically at the moment, a factory Paul McCartney live dvd. When inserted, it tries to read it, whirrs and clunks for about 20 seconds then ejects it. It plays on my old G4 1.2dp and both my bluRay player and dvd players in my lounge. I've had problems like this with dvd-r's before but not with factory made dvd's. Since it plays on my home system and G4 I guess it's not a region issue (I'm in the UK) and I can't find any info on the dvd that says it's any particular region. Other factory dvd's can play fine?

Jul 5, 2012I just got my computer back from having the hard drive replaced and now every time I try to put a DVD in, it spins for a minute and then just spits the dvd right back out. They play fine on the dvd player and ps3 but not the imac.

Sep 7, 2009I have been having some problems recently with my 06 mac mini that i got in august time its the intel one with GMA950 and a superdrive (i think!) lol its the mashita UJ-846 one. Thats what system profiler says at least lol. :-)
Anyways enough about that, for a while now, it wont accept DVDs or CDs in the drive. I have tried to boot off the install DVD and do hardware test, but the DVD ejected. and it just booted straight into the OS..
Is it time to get a new DVD drive? i got a lacie D2 a coupla years back to help with burning DVDs, cos it wouldnt burn DVDs neither, whether thats cos its the superdrive or cos it was failing, i dont know. At the time i searched about and it seemed like it was a DVD drive that was prone to failing on people.Is there anything i can do to test, n see how busted this bad boy actually is??
Its not essential that i need it working as i use the other DVD drive when required. But if i did want to install SL on it, that could be a bit problematic..

May 7, 2012How can I run AHT on my iMAC 21.5 inch, MID 2011 and Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50)? There were no DVDs in the package, no restart key-stroke combination connected to internet-aht, no aht is included in the package I bought and downloaded from Apstore. One of the 4 rear USB ports seems to be death from the very first moment. I would like to use the AHT to see if this is some SW misconfiguration or is it a HW problem.

May 13, 2012I've been having problems with my iMac recently, more precisely with my DVD drive. I think it's a software problem, and no mechanical problem. Let me explain:
When I insert a DVD:
- it will sometimes work perfectly. I can read, burn or whatever I feel like…
- it will sometimes not work. I don't know why, but the drive gives a few try (mechanical noises), and than ejects the DVD. If I try a few more times to reinsert it, it will sometimes just keep the DVD and not eject it, without recognizing it. When I try to open the Disk Utility program, it will simply froze. Or it will open after 5 minutes, but the DVD player will not exist and not appear.
I need to restart the computer. Sometimes it will work after the restart. Sometimes not. It's really random, and I haven't found out on what it depends… Sometimes, when I reboot it because of a trapped-unrecognized DVD, the DVD player will not open. "Initialization error [-70012]"…
I've tried Option-Cmd-P-R at the Start, but it didn't help… I feel like there's something wrong with the software.
It's a 2 years old iMac, using Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6.8).
I've tried looking on the net, but a lot of people are experiencing mechanical problems (it simply never works), which I think is not the case here (it does randomly work perfectly).

Jun 3, 2012My Imac has recently began to show some problems with Dual layers DVDs that I did not experience before. It doesn't burn any DVD9 anymore. Even worse, I can not play any DVD9 I'd burnt on the same drive before, because they are constantly ejected, while before that (till 1-2 months ago) I had no problem with the same discs. With retail dvds or dvd5s (+R or -R). Does it mean that my DVD drive has become defective?

Intel Mac :: 'superdrive' Doesn't Read Or Recognize Film Dvds
May 8, 2012Nothing appears on the desktop, and the DVD doesn't play (this is the second DVD I've tried). The drive works to download software though. These are commercial DVDs from Lovefilm in the UK - there are bound to be some scratches - does this mean I can only play new DVDs?
Also, if I click Finder to eject the DVD, the command is light gray, meaning the IMAC has not actually registered that there's a DVD in the drive, so I have to log off and on again for the DVD icon to appear on the desktop, at which point I can eject it. However, if I click it, it doesn't play. I'd really like to play films if I can.
I don't know what operating system I have, except that it's MAC OS X. I only just got it new two days ago.

Mar 2, 2009I'm new to using the Mac. I currently have the Macbook Pro as well as the 24" iMac. I have been trying and trying to burn some CDs and well as DVDs but have no idea how to do it. Could someone lead me to a link or give me directions on how to do it please? I usually use Nero on my PC, but would hate to go back n forth for this operation. Also, I rip alot of my DVDs as a back up as well as to watch them on my HD player. Normally I would use DVD Shrink on my PC. Am I able to do the same on Mac or do I need an additional software?

Nov 10, 2009Just got a brand new uMBP (mid 2009); came with 10.6.2; migrated all my stuff from a backup of my old computer (which was running 10.5). Every program seems to run great, except that I cannot get Mactheripper (or Ripit) to rip any DVD. (My old Mid-2008 MBP, running 10.5 had no issues.) MTR opens, seems to do a rip in a very small amount of time, say 3 min when it should take 30, but says bad sectors, all that. I "reinstalled libraries," and it still failed. FWIW, Ripit fails with the burn after a few seconds. This is on more than one disc, for both MTR and Ripit, which tells me this might be about my system. The Superdrive plays DVDs fine, btw. Is there a pref file I need to trash, or something like that which might "reset" something to allow my drive to rip anything? Is this an issue with Snow Leopard? Something else in the system?

Jan 31, 2010I have recently downloaded VLC to rip DVDs onto my mac so that I can put them into my video library for easy use. I am aware of the numerous threads on this site but cant seem to find a solution to my problem: I am following the instructions offered on this site but cant get past the opening menu screen that you always get on DVDs [scene selection, extras etc etc]. The instructions suggest that I need to select the 2nd or 3rd title to rectify this, try playing it as a test before ripping away. However, it doesn't seem to matter which title or chapter I select on the VLC options I only ever manage to rip the top menu??
