IMac Froze and now just File icon appearing on Startup and now using a back-up hard drive to restore Lion but when it searches for disks to install the restore on it can't locate the desktop hard drive.

I have a 2011 Imac and was on the youtube watching a music video when all of a sudden my screen COMPLELETY froze, and a loud clicking noise kept repeating itself nonstop from the speaker, I'm not sure if the sound was coming from the song OR my computer actually making the noise itself. I held down the power button and waited a couple minutes and restarted. The white screen came on with the apple logo, but all of a sudden it completely froze, I waited a few minutes and powered off. I now waited 5 minutes and restarted and it WORKED! Everything seems fine?

I'm not an expert on OS X, however recently I've been trying to spend more time with the system to learn and possibly switch from W7. The weirdest thing happened last night. I'm was trying to uninstall istat 3.0 from my system and it froze( the beach ball ). After force quiting it, i tried to start Word but the icon would only keep on bouncing and stop after a minute. No error message no nothing. I was sure it's an issue with Office itself, but no other software is starting. Mental Case, UnrarX, Excel, even Ponyvid, just bounce their icon around for 30-40 seconds and wont start. The only software that works are Apple's own Safari, Mail, Calendar , iPhoto and iTunes. They start normally with no fuss. I tried restarting and even creating another user account, and it didn't help. Is it possible that istat 3.0 blew something in the system? If so, what can it be? Anybody had this kind of situation before? Any fix on hand? What should I do next?
View 5 Replies View Related I was normally using my Mac, as usual, when it suddenly crashed. The screen froze up and this icon showed up in the middle...A few minute later, it was still there so I had to force restart my mac. But when it started again, the image of a flashing folder with a question mark appeared. I googled a bit what it could mean, and I quickly found it was something about directory corruption. I tried to open the disk utility as advised to check if the disk was damaged, however it said the disk was alright, and it didn't give me the option to repair it. So now I'm stuck in the disk utility, and my only options are:
- Use time machine (I didn't save my data using it so useless)
- Reinstall OS X (Deleting all my content - exactly what I want to avoid)
- Repair the Disk (Which I can't even do)
So my main question is, is there a way I can get back all my files/data before reinstalling OSX? Are there other ways to repair what is broken without resetting my whole comp? Is it even possible that your mac crashes at any moment, making you lose EVERYTHING for no reason?

Suddenly, after awaking my MacBook from sleep, this bluetooth icon has appeared in my menu bar. I didn't change any settings or install anything new recently and I just want to get it off of there. When clicked the option it gives is grayed-out "Bluetooth: Not Available". Does anyone know how I can get this icon off of there?

I am currently running Mac OS X v10.6.5 on my MacBook Pro. Recently, everytime I restart I get an icon for "starfield update." The folder is located in my Applications folder but I don't know where it came from. A Google search didn't turn anything up. I can't close the app I have to force it closed. Is this something that should exist on my machine or is it some sort of malware?

My office does have a time machine backup system, but I'm pretty sure it only backs up our individual hard drives.This file was only saved to the office Shared server.The weirdest part is that all there is in the trash is a bunch of .ipa files from my last iPhone update.But I didn't delete those.so why are THEY in the trash to begin with, but not the files that were actually deleted?I've been having tons of issues with other stuff since we upgraded to Lion.I've absolutely got to get that file back..

I tried it again (and every time since) I get the good old apple logo on the grey screen with the spinning loading thing, but it never progresses past that.I threw in my old Leopard install disc and it asks me where I want to install Leopard, but the HDD option never appears, nor does it in Disk Utility. I have a disk image .dmg file, and chage the icon by highlighting the file in Finder, then press Command-I. Then I'll copy and past a new icon in the file information dialog box. I can then see the new icon in the finder, and also the icon for this file in the dock changes. Great. Then I'll rsync the .dmg file from one Mac to another, and the icon reverts to the default icon for .dmg files. Is there any way to make the icon change stick, when copying the file to another Mac?

I recently had to switch out the hard drive on my Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro. When I got the computer back from the Apple Store I began loading my old content onto the machine. When previewing and opening files, they would appear with randomly coloured splotches of pixels on them. This continues to happen when browsing folders on my machine.
The files do not show up with splotches on other computers, and are not in the same places each time I open the file, which leads me to believe they are problems with my machine and not the files themselves.
I hypothesise this is the graphics card, but I don't know enough about the hardware.

For the past few days now everytime i start my 15 inch umbp i get the hard drive icon instead of the apple, i need to click the icon before the computer starts but i thought this only showed up if i had boot camp installed but i dont.

The other day I was modifying my dock settings and have got it to a place which I'm happy with, apart from one problem. I was experimenting with different trash icons but decided to stick with the original so changed them back. Now, every time I shutdown and reboot, the trash icon is showing up as one of the trash icons I was experimenting, regardless of whether or not there is anything in the trash. If the trash has something in it, the wrong icon will be displayed before automatically switching to the correct one. However, if the trash is empty on startup, I have to put something in it, then empty the trash before the correct icon shows up. I have checked that I have deleted all the icons I was experimenting with but it seems like it the unwanted icon has been saved somewhere in memory and is the default trash icon on startup? Any ideas on what's going on or how to fix the problem?

I have just downloaded skype for the first time. I do not make many downloads. The problem is the application icon, appears in the side bar under places. I do not want it to be there.
