We just bought our first iMac and we are trying to set it up for three users, my wife, my son, and I. I want to each have our own email and web bookmarks (parental controls for our son), but I want to share the iPhoto pictures between two of the three users, just not our son.

What can I do to see the Library folder in finder?

how do i show the Library folder in Finder. where can i read about what the Library does and what it holds.

So I turned on my computers guest account today and while logged onto my username I tried to access the Guest's desktop folder. I was able to open the home folder but it said I was denied access to all the folders inside it, though I'm an administrator. It seems if I hit get info and add myself to the access list I can get into a folder, but is there a simpler way?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI was using until recently a PowerPC running Mac OS X 10.4.11. Since I maintain my directories synchronized all the time between Linux running on another machine and this PowerPC, I created a link: /home -> /Users so that all my scrpits and links (like /home/....) would work properly under both systems. I acquired recently an iMac running under Mac OS 10.5.3 and discovered that there exists already a directory called "/home" which has a rather strange behaviour: not even the user 'root' is allowed to write into it or to modify it in any way, orv to remove it! This breaks many of my scripts.
Of course I can go the opposite way and create under my Linux a link: /Users->/home, but some of my scripts create automatically links like "/home/..." because they expand "~/..." and these would give me troubles on the iMac. I wrote a script which goes through my directory and changes all my links, but it does not seem to be the right way.
I want to set up a separate user accout for a friend on my mac, but I want to keep my work private. Specifically my
Sites folder which holds web files that need to be accessed by root / *web_user* --- whatever appachies user is, www_root maybe.Â
How do I simply restrict access to other 'Created Login Users' from accessing my entire home folder? I need to just keep out other login accounts i set up thru the system accounts window.Â

I created a new account for my daughter and I had left iTunes open. She logged into the computer (with Fast User switching) while I was still logged in and iTunes running & my Home Shared library showed up in her iTunes and it works fine.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWe upgraded our lab from 10.6.8 to 10.9.3. Preserving our settings and bootcamp by simply upgrading. After getting nearly all machines sorted out with active directory we are still having a problem with 2-3 machines with network user accounts being able to login. If no local home folder has been created prior to upgrading to 10.9.3 then the user cannot login, the login prompt dissapears then re-appears.
Here is a run down of the set-up.Â
Our settings force network users to have a local home folder on the local mac that they are logging into.Â
Mac OS X server is 10.6.8.Â
Active directory server is 2012 R2.Â
Network users without a pre-created home folder on the local mac prior to upgrade cannot login. The login prompt dissapears, then re-appears. No login.Â
Computers are managed with workgroup manager, as well as apple remote desktop. But no settings are applied, and no login scripts are being run. Â
Also I have noticed something concerning Mac OS X 10.8.5 and up. And that is in the active directory settings, if you bind to a domain (using active directory and not LDAP), lets say for example:Â
mydistrict.maindistrict.netÂ
And you go to add your local active directory district to the Authentication/Contacts search policy eg: Active Directory/mydistrict.maindistrict.net
it will only show: Active Directory/mydistrict/alldomains.maindistrict.net.Â
It shows a list of all domains for the forest. But it also adds the district that you bound to as the search directory?
Let me use a precise example using actual names.Â
Bind to local district: pineville.ketsds.netÂ
Now in search policy on 10.8.5 up to 10.9.3 it displays possible search domains like this:Â
Active Directory/PINEVILLE/pineville.ketsds.net <- The domain we want.
Active Directory/PINEVILLE/all-other-domains-in-forest.ketsds.net <--Which is fine.Â
Which is all fine, but when we select the local domain for authentication, and contacts search it adds it, but in the overview it says that it is not in our search policy even though it is.Â
On Mac OS X versions below this (10.6.8 and down, cannot verify for 10.7 as we do not have systems with it) it displays the search domains as:Â
Active Directory/pineville.ketsds.net
as compared to this on 10.8.5 and above:Â
Active Directory/PINEVILLE/pineville.ketsds.net
As well as all the other domains, and when you add the local to the search policy it does not give the error that it is not in your search policy. Is there anyway to make this happen on 10.8.5 and above? We have tried everything. Network accounts will login even though it says this, it is just annoying. Â
Last question is on one computer that we upgraded, we had a problem with the network accounts. Tried deleting the .plist for network preferences, and the Directory services folder as well as the Open directory folder and now it create the open directory folder as locked and any changes made with the directory utility in the search policy is immediatley reverted once we hit apply.Â
Summary of questions:
1.) Network users cannot login without local folder created prior to upgrade.Â
2.) Mac OS X 10.8.5 and above does not correctly add Authentication/Contact search policy domains as it does in 10.6.8 and below.Â
3.) Active Directory/Open Directory Authentication/Contact search policy settings keey reverting after applying. (Happened prior to deleting .plist files and AD/OD folders in /Library/Preferences)Â

I have performed these steps:Â create test account with user name testcreate test folder on an external HDchanged home folder for the user to the test folder on the ext. HD using Advanced Options under Users & Groups.rebootedÂ
I have observed that any user can see content of test/Documents and ls -l shows that the current user is the owner.Â
So for example if there is an account Frank, Frank can see the content of test/Documents and Frank is shown as an owner.Â
Is it possible for two different user accounts on the same iMac to point at the same iTunes library ?Â
Home sharing the library that currently exists just in the Admin account does not seem to do the trick.Â
If so, would the library need to be re-located outside of the Admin users account, or not? For example to an external drive?Â
The reason for asking is that my wife and I both wish to sync our iPhones to the same set of iTunes playlists, movies, app's etc, (and iPhoto albums, but that is a different posting) but need to maintain separate user accounts on the iMac so that we can have independent Mail and Address books.Â
I stress that this will be on the same machine, (as the laptop has died and is to be replaced with an iPad) so there is no risk of both accounts attempting to access the library at the same time.Â
I have my photos on my imac in my user account under pictures. This works fine and is backed up with Time Machine.I also have a MBP and want to access the iphoto library in my user account but whatever settings I use in sharing this will not work.I have heard I can put this in my shared folder but I wonder if time machine will still back this up and also if this will work.Could someone pls help me, its annoying as my itunes library is on an external hard drive and this can be accessed on both macs using the alt key.

View 2 Replies View RelatedFor a variety of reasons I want to make the Users' Library visible. The main reason is that I want to Import the Safari bookmarks into Opera. I can't do that because the Users' Library is invisible.Â
If I enter Safari into Spotlight I can find the folder okay but that is useless for my purpose. It's okay if I want to transfer Bookmarks to a new computer or external drive but not for importing the Safari bookmarks to Opera.Â
It used to be visible, I don't know why, it just appeared out of the ether. Since I have updated the OS it has vanished again. Never could understand why the folder was made invisible anyway.Â
I want to set my wife up as a separate user on my mac and share my music file with her so we no longer mix up our iPhone apps. I don't want a second copy on my hard drive. I've tried one method on here HT1203 but it makes a second copy and fills up my hard drive. I do not want to share the whole media library just the music. There must be an easy way to use two iPhones with separate user ids on one Mac so we don't mix up our apps. I would have though that the great Apple would have just sorted this out when you plug in a different device.

My wife and I have both just got iPhones. I have created a user account for her on my intel iMac and want to use the iphones on the one computer.
I need to share the iTunes library (and iphoto eventually) so I dont have to double-up everything.
I have tried dragging the Itunes Music into the shared folder... and creating aliases as described in various places on the web and in magazines, but this simply does not work. No tracks appear in my wife's itunes. There is not even 'shared library' icon on the left hand side.
Having upgraded to Lion 10.7.3, the TextEdit 1.7 (289.3) application does not display any fonts placed in Users area: Mac HD/Users/Library/Fonts. But the same fonts are OK when placed at Public area: Mac HD/Library/Fonts. Tried Repairing Permission via Disk Utility with no joy. Although fonts placed at Users area don't display in TextEdit, they do display in Quark XPress, FileMaker, OpenOffice, Illustrator etc, etc.

I have a friend who has dropped his Home folder onto my external hard drive (including Photos, Movies, Library etc.). He was hoping that I could recover some photos from his folders that he says were accidentally deleted. I know traditionally you would just run recovery software like DiskWarrior or Tech Tool Pro but he no longer owns his mac and simply has these folders to work with.
So the basic question is:
Is it possible to recover deleted photos from the iPhoto Library using only the Photos folder (which contains his entire iPhoto library) and his home Library folder.
also if it is not possible to recover photos of any kind, is it possible to recover anything else? I would love to be able to at least show him some sort of results as I owe him a favor
I just have bought a second hand macbook (white one with leopard)
I want to change the home from his current name of JJlaw02 to my name, as is on my current iMac. However I cannot do this, he has not provided me with his password, but has instead deleted his account, having just one user, called User. I am since confused as to why I even need a password, if I currently do not need one to start it up.
My home folder appears to have gone missing from the Users folder in finder. See screenshot - I can see the test account I created and the shared folder but not my home folder. Â
I can still access my home folder via the sidebar but this causes problems with some software not being able to see my home folder in their browsers (Nikon Capture NX2 being an example).Â

I have 4 Mac's in my household, 2 MBP's, a Mac Pro ,and a Mac Mini. I can find the Mac Pro and both MBP's on Back to my Mac but the problem is with the Mac Mini.I am able to see any of the computers from the Mac Mini but the Mac Mini won't show up on any of the computers. This would be the case using Back to My Mac and won't even work on the Finder within the home network. The Mac Mini simply won't show up in the Finder.
I have Leopard on the system with the latest updates and have gone through the settings and can't find anything that is turned off.
I added a laptop to our home network that'll primarily be used by my wife. Most of our iTunes content is on my system. I wanted to share the library across the network and give her the option of importing tracks off mine. This will let the whole family use either computer to sync their iPods.
I set up the Home Sharing option using verion 9.0.2 on both machines. I didn't use a password. I can see the other computer's libraries under 'Shared' on each system and access their files to play. But when I select the library, I don't get the 'Import' option that is listed in the Help menu instructions. Without being able to import the tracks, we have to go back to the main machine to sync.
I have myself a 2010 macbook. go me. My friend here has an Acer (pc). We both have itunes (go us). I want to share my library with her because I've got like 5,000 songs that she wants. WELL. I can see her library on my mac but she cant see my library on her pc. Did I not do something right here? We're using home sharing. So she's technically on my account but I cant seem to be able to get her to see my library. I've check the firewall on both. I've checked everything. What do I do?

I really want to play my music in multiple rooms at the same time. I know I could buy an atv or airport express for my home theater but don't need all the extra functionality. View 3 Replies View RelatedMy brother has told me its simple to switch over itunes library but sure he isnt gonna tell me, he is like that! My iMac desktop is tiger 10.4.11 & i want to transfer my itunes library, including apps/films/tv shows etc to my macbook laptop which is 10.5. I have uploaded most of my pics to mobile me so that they are safe but I have home movies also & want to secure them. I was gonna upgrade the imac tiger to snow leopard as Im probably getting a time capsule as a gift & would need to be 10.5 or higher to use it I believe but i decided against that. I will just use the desktop for general browsing etc & not keep anything of sentimental value on it.
