I created a ubuntu live disc and tried it in my iMac. So I went into system preference=> start up disc and changed the boot order in order to test the disc. Now when I booted my computer this morning it automatically went to booting from the disc even when the disc was not in the drive. I thought it should have just gone back to booting from the hard drive. Does anyone know what I have to do in order to put the boot order back to mac hd?

How can I unblock them and return my messenger to normal?
My external hard drive was accidentally unplugged without ejecting. Now when I plug it in, it read only. I can copy files from it but not to it. Is there a way to reinstate write access without losing my data?

I downloaded a program that cleans up my Mac but in doing so it has deleted files some programs need to run. There are thousands of files in the trash and I would like to return them all to the HD or their original homes..

View 2 Replies View RelatedHere's the situation. Wireless network thru Time Capsule, wireless printer, 2 macbooks, Snow Leopard 10.6.4. I'm the only listed user and admin on both systems (same user name, same home directory name, same password). I'd like to add a second account to one of the macbooks, and here's a list of what I'd like to do specifically with the second account:
1) different account name, auto login, no password. (this I have been able to do)
2) Same desktop, file and program access as the original account, no changes to existing email setup, etc. (this I do not know how to do) With the new account I setup, the desktop is completely different, and no email accounts are setup. I want everything to be the same (except #3 listed below).
3) No printing access, which is the whole point of creating this second account. I already have tried turning off print sharing, deleted all print drivers, printer plist, etc., but the darn printer keeps reinstalling (after clicking "last printer used" in the print dialog box, and software update asks to download and reinstall the missing drivers). If I can accomplish task #2, I'm guessing I can restrict printing simply with parental controls. right?
I have 2 personal user accounts on my Mac Leopard 10.5.6, and would like to gain full access to all files within the 2 User Accounts.
How do i set this up ?
Right now, it is not letting me access files from 1 user account to the other ??
I am currently setting up a few iMacs for my computer lab.
I use the Parental Controls to freeze the dock and to restrict the use of applications to only specific ones, and it's all working great.
It would just be great to have a way to restrict access to the "Library" folder in the "User" folder, as well as the "Developer", "Library", and "System" folders at the "Macintosh HD" level. I know using the permissions is not possible, and all the monitoring apps I've seen only enable you to restore the account and see what's been done and moved around.
So I am looking for a way to disable user access to those folders, so that when they try to open them they get a message saying they can't access it, just like in the windows-based computer labs.
I inherited a mid-2010 MacPro at work and am unable to access single user mode. I have booted off of an external HDD and reinstalled the OS. I have also reconfigured the RAM and reset the PRAM with no changes. When I load single user mode, I see the following prompt:
key:
The only way for me to get out of "key:" is to reboot the computer

My Mac partition recently got corrupted to the point of needing a fresh install. I just starting installing my utilities again and downloaded the newest version of NTFS-3G. While doing this, I noticed that there was a "professional" version of NTFS-3G sold by Tuxera (who makes NTFS-3G). I tried to find information comparing the two, but can't; Even on their own website. Does anyone know what the major differences between them are? Is worth the $31 for a normal user (meaning someone who has a BootCamp partition, but doesn't always copy to and from it)?
View 21 Replies View RelatedNew to the forum and already I need some help. Here's my tale of woe-I purchased a mac mini on eBay and it came with no disks and I don't have the user name or password and apparently now can't get them from the seller. I did a google search and have tried getting into the single user mode (Command + s) and I end up on a page with a black background that runs through prompts and ends with a message that says 'initalization complete.' I have tried typing in the commands suggested in my google search (sh/etc/rc) and it comes back with a 'file unknown' prompt.
View 1 Replies View RelatedTwo days ago I updated my Macbook Pro to the latest version using the "Software Update" utility. It restarted and I just shut it down.Yesterday I attempted to log to my account and I realized that it's not possible. No matter the account I try it:Â
1. Asks for a password (Enter password correctly).
2. A gray screen appears for one or two seconds as if it's loading the session.
3. It comes back to the accounts screen.Â
After many tries then I entered to the Recovery utilities ( Command + R on boot). I analized the disk and it's fine, no errors on it. So I decided to reinstall OS X When I try to re-install it starts to download some components and after few minutes of download it states that it cannot download these components. I thought it was a problem with my wireless network so I plugged an ethernet cable to the mac but the same error still happens after one minute or two.
Note: I checked my network with other devices and it's working fine.Â

so my iMac running leopard on my college campus was forced to install this application called "Policy Key.app" This program allows me to connect to the internet for my campus, yet, as I dug through the permissions of this app, I see that there is system access, admin access, myself with access, and then...."Unknown" with read and write capabilities. Is this normal? I assume the write part must be to deactivate my internet if I am doing something illegal obviously but I must say I feel uncomfortable knowing that there is the "Unknown" user that can read and write my internet access levels.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Snow Leopard on my MacBook, and now all my applications have disappeared from my desktop plus I can't access to my User folder which contains everything including CS4 package. It tells me that I don't have permission to access these folders, which there is only 1 account user on this Mac. Â
Help!!! What do I do to get a permission to use my old folders from Leopard (10.5)?  And yes, I have backed up everything on my external hard drive before I installed this Snow Leopard! I was assured that I won't lose everything when I have loaded this on, only difference is the software is updated and newer apps but now I can't look into anything I had on my Mac! Â

Today when I turned on my iMac, it went to the login screen and then something odd happened. I saw a second account on the login list that i never made. It is called "Other: and has an icon with lines and spheres (like a networking icon). Also when I click on it, it asks for a name and password.I logged into account and went straight to System Preferences ->Accounts and there is no "Other" in the list of accounts there on the left.just my account. Is this a virus or have I been hacked? Or is this is bug?

When I purchased my iMac a few years ago, I created one user account and just started using my computer. I am trying to implement a few Safe Computing practices by creating a new Admin user account and changing my original user account to a Standard user. Â
For some reason, I cannot change either of the accounts to a standard user after I type in the password. I've logged in as both and tried to change the other user profile to a standard user, but the checkbox is greyed out on both of the Admin User accounts.  Â
I can create a new standard user, but I have everyting set the way I like it on my current Admin user account. It would be much easier to have a new Admin User account and "Downgrade" my original Admin account to a standard user account. Â
why the option to change from an Admin user to a standard user would be "Greyed Out"? The support articles walk me through, what should be a few simple steps, but I can not change the settings because the checkbox is greyed out. Â
