Intel Mac :: Can't Eject Phantom Drive?
May 2, 2012
I have a portable drive that I plugged into my imac (2010, OS 10.6.8) and as it was starting up and being found by the imac, the usb cable slipped out so the drive was not properly dismounted, but a file remained on my desktop. I cannot delete or eject this 0Kb file. I tried to rename the file and got an error code -8058. I cannot move the file. Â
fyi, I replugged in the portable drive and it shows up separately (I've since renamed it) and works fine. When I eject it, the other file still remains.

I had a shared disk mounted on my Mac Pro.This drive was removed from the network without dismounting. Now the missing drive shows up under the DEVICES/SHARED tab on the Finder screen. It can't be moved to the trash. Rebooting doesn't help.

I recently bought a new hard drive for my 2006 MacPro, intending to use it as a new startup disk. Trouble is, the drive it replaced, a 2TB drive has too much info I want to keep to move it out and reformat. So I figured if I deleted all of the old system files I'd be ok. Since then I've been plagued with problems, mostly permissions changing in the core services folders. There are other minor issues as well, like my apple keyboard function keys not doing what they're supposed to, and if I accidentally hit the eject button in the menu bar I get the beachball of death, with no way to force quit.Â
I have done everything I could, and a lot of research, and I stumbled upon the answer. In the startup disk utility "Reset password' I noted that the admin account, and user account from the old drive were still being recognized as existing. So basically it's like my computer is having an identity crisis!Â
I've been searching for a way to get rid of those phantom accounts, and my best lead turned up some apparent glitch in Leopard regarding old accounts. But how to get rid of them? It would be very difficult for me to safely backup the sheer amount of data on that drive in order to reformat, but I can't seem to find how to rid myself of these accounts. I tried logging in as the root user, but didn't see any tell-tale files on that drive. Â

When I insert a CD or DVD into my iMAC superdrive it is recognised and will play but then it is not displayed in the finder sidebar. consequently I cannot eject the disc. The only way to eject is to restart the machine.

I have a iMac (iMac7,1) Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz that is 5 years old. The MATSHITADVD-R UJ-875 (DB09) Superdrive has been replaced once already. It is malfucntioning again. I was wondering if there were any troubleshooting steps I could take that I am unaware of before I replace the drive. Â
It seems to be a mechanical issue. The drive attempts to eject a disk - it sound like the disk is ejecting, yet it cannot. It keeps attempting to eject the disk over and over again. It has happened with a number of different disks, often after some time the disk will eventually eject. This time this one seems to be stuck for good. [URL]

On the G5 and Intel iMacs, is there any manual eject (paper clip or other probe) on either of the optical drives, Combo or Superdrive?

I've got a PowerPC G5 running 10.4. After four years of dedicated service, my Superdrive gave out, so I bought a Sony drive (SONY DVD RW DRU-842A in profiler) to replace it. Here's the trouble:
Any time the machine goes to sleep with a disc in the drive, it won't eject when I wake it up. I have to restart, then eject. Other than that, the drive works beautifully. If this question has been answered elsewhere, please redirect me there, sorry for the repost.
Speaking of sleep, when I put the machine to sleep through the menu it goes fully to sleep (no fan/other noise). But when it goes to sleep on its own, I can still hear the machine churning away. Any ideas? My roomate has a newer Mac Pro that doesn't do this.

I've been having this weird issue for a few weeks. In my main user account I get 9 0 byte files that show up in my trash. If I open trash and click delete files it goes through the motions (makes empty trash sound, closes trash window) but the files remain. The only way to remove them is to do a get info on all of them which pops up the get info window for a fraction of a second, closes it and the file disappears. Trash lists the file type as alias. I can't drag them to the desktop or anywhere outside of trash. I tried doing a secure erase just in case they were remnants of old files or something. The file names are seemingly random symbols. The file names seem to be the same each time, although they seem to move in different locations (higher, lower in list). The creation date is the same for all, December 31, 1904 4:00 pm. I have a screen shot attached. This issue is only happening in my main non-admin account. My other admin account this isn't happening.

I just bought a new HD 500gb to put my time machine on, and it has 34 GB of phantom space. I have 84GB being used for my files, but yet 34GB of unknown space. Is that for the program itself?
Or did I do something wrong in setup.

I'm not sure where they're coming from. I run OS 10.5.7, so perhaps it is in my OS? I also run Flock, and sometimes Firefox; both are usually open all the time. How can I remove or control these pop-ups?
I took this screenshot in the upper right-hand corner of my screen.

So, I did some archving (simply dragging old libraries and projects over to a different storage drive.)Â
However, some of the libraries STILL appeared in my browser. ...but WITHOUT the purple library symbol. And... no contents appear when you click the arrow... AND... I can't delete them? (They do NOT show up on the HD, thus I can't delete them in the finder, either.)Â What gives?Â

after I get a bad burn (it's very rare, but it does happen), I get a stuck DVD. I can't open the DVD tray unless I either restart the computer or wait a &$?# long time before it gets done trying to read an unreadable DVD. Even the terminal won't allow me to open it. Is there a way to get the DVD tray opened "immediately"? Sucks to think that we don't have control over that.

Every time I used a USB drive, I am told that it can't be ejected because a program is using it. Sometimes it says the finder is using it (it shouldn't be: if the finder is using it it is only listing it as a drive). Relaunching the finder using "force quit" doesn't work: it just changes the message to "one or more programs may be using it". Shutting down every single program - none of which are using it anyway. I eventually get a force eject option, which I use, though that comes with a warning that force eject may damage files.Â
Running Yosemite on a late 2010 Air (though I get the same problem on my 2011 Macbook pro).Â

boot camp assistent to add a Windows partition on my Macbook pro hard drive, about 40 gb, I installed windows 7, I couldn't manage to restarte the computer in MacOSX (i didn't had internet access) and I din't know that you just have to press option at start up, so I did a "format c:", the day later I found out what to do and I used again Bootcamp assistent to erase the partition, but even if I removed the partition, my hard drive still "see" only 460 gb instead of 500 (by looking at finder and tech tool deluxe), my hard drive shoud be 500gb.

Are there any specifics I should know about the second drive bay? I'm planning on buying just a really fast CD-ROM drive to put in there - can I get any ole' one? I noticed that the Apple drive does not have a faceplate - does this mean I have to remove the faceplate from whatever drive I get? Are there drives available that already have no faceplate?
I never used Mac OS X with more than one optical drive - how does opening a drive work? Does the eject button open both drives? One at a time?

Supposedly, the external is in use and cannot be ejected, but i don't think it's in use. I've only recently been encountering this problem, and i have no idea why. I've tried quitting every application, but it still claims to be in use.

I just got an external LaCie DVD burner (long story). It works great, but as of right now I can apparently only eject it by right-click > eject or drag it to the "trash." Is there any way to allow me to just use the button on the drive or tie it to the eject button on the keyboard when it's connected, or even another key command like Opt-Eject?

I have a MacBook with a storage drive connected via firewire. All was fine but now suddenly it won't show the contents of the folders and it won't eject. I tried dragging it to the trash, and I also tried the eject arrow in the list of drives. I tried to open Disk Utility, but it just spins. I also tried to throw something else away in the trash, and the trash folder will not take it.
Normally if something like this happened, I would just restart and hope it rights itself, but I don't know if I can do that with a storage drive still attached. (On another occasion, the storage drive got pulled out improperly and luckily I was able to repair it with Disk Utility.)

As a new IMac user (24 hours) I decided to copy my entire CD collection on to my computer. I now have a CD that is stuck in my IMac. It doesn't read/display at all, nor will it eject when I select this option from ITunes. Is there a way to manually eject the disc or another way that I may not be familiar with given my lack of apple experience? I have over 500 CDs to copy and I have only done 10 or so when this occurred.
