MacBook :: Soft Chirping Noise 3-5 Times Per Second?

Mar 2, 2012

I've had my Macbook since 2009, and since this morning it's been making a chirping noise, possibly from the optical disk drive, roughly 4 times per second. It stops for about a second every 10 minutes, but other than that it has been repetitively chirping all day. I haven't dropped it or anything like that.

Hardware :: Imac 27 Inch Loud HDD Noise?

Nov 18, 2009

For those of you that have the new imac, is your HD also pretty loud? I notice it constantly. Whenever I am browsing I can hear the ticking noise for a couple of seconds, this restarts every time I navigate to another page or simply by typing text like I'm doing now or scrolling down. I realize this is with all HDs, but this one is pretty darn loud. Does anyone else have the same issue?

IMac :: Loud Vibrating Noise Audible When I7 Placed On Desk

Nov 19, 2009

When my new i7 is on my usual desk (where iMac 24" white stood silently before), it sounds like a dishwasher. Or a plane engine. The low, loud vibrating noise drives me so mad I snap. It penetrates my very brain and makes it vibrate. It's audible from another room. In desperation, I raised my Mac and the sound stopped. I put it on the floor, and the machine is silent. Back on desk - airplane engine sound again. What the heck? My desk has been perfect for all my other computers, what's so special about i7?

Today, I got home and turned on my iMac 21.5 inch. On a typical day, I'd here the "BONG" and then everything would be normal. Today, my fans, or something inside the computer, sounded like it was going crazy. I have no idea what's wrong.

IMac :: Computer Making Loud Constant Noise / Sound Coming After 30 Seconds

Nov 17, 2010

My family just recently upgraded from an old PC to this 27" iMac, during the early part of the summer. While using it over the last little while, I would notice a noise that sounded like a harddrive spinning or possibly some sort of a fan noise. The best way to describe it would probably be as digital noise. It's not incredibly loud, but it's a decent volume, and can get quite annoying. It has a little bit of a squeak to it.

Over the last little while, it's become more constant. When the computer is in use, it'll usually occur quite often. It's quite annoying and obtrusive when I'm watching videos and I'd like to know what it could be.I think our computer is still under warranty, so I'm hoping to find out if it is something wrong, so I can get it replaced.

I've also been wondering if it's a fan, or a regular noise. However, it's so constant that I'm starting to wonder. The other night, I was watching a video and it seemed like it was coming on every 30 seconds for a long span of time. We don't run any memory heavy programs on this computer. If anything, we're just using Firefox, iTunes and/or Messenger. Sometimes Office. There's little to nothing stored on this computer, as it's brand new, so most of its memory is free.

IMac :: Extremely Loud Static Noise / System Crashes To Black Screen

Oct 13, 2009

Very occasionally the screen on my iMac (early 08 24") goes blank and it makes an incredibly loud static sound that's independent of the volume control setting. The power then needs disconnecting to restart the machine. Haven't been able to tie it to any specific program. Apple Care asked I leave it on logged in on a new user account (at the time I originally thought it only happened in sleep mode, but have since discovered this is not the case).

It's happened maybe 3 or 4 times in the same number of months. I've only found one similar case on the net, with someone suggesting it was Safari 4 beta, which I've found not to be the case with mine. It's on extended warranty. I think there's something seriously wrong with it (it's already had the hard drive and power supply replaced).

MacBook Pro :: 17-inch MBP Makes Noise And Vibrations / Loud Mechanical Noise Coming

Oct 1, 2009

Sometimes I lift and carefully move my 17-inch MBP a short distance to another flat surface without putting it to sleep mode, it starts making really loud mechanical noise when I put it down, so loud that people in the same room can hear the noise and I can feel vibrations too! What causes this? Where does this noise come from? Is my MBP defective?

MacBook Pro :: Hinge Makes Cracking Noise / Loud Popping Noise When Adjust Screen Position

Jun 6, 2009

On my 13" MacBook Pro, the hinge makes a cracking noise on the right side of the computer (near the power button) when the screen is positioned all the way back. The entire hinge also makes a loud popping noise when I adjust the screen position. The screen seems very tight, and it takes a little bit of effort to move the screen, and when the screen is moved it makes the loud popping noise.

This is probably going to make some of you guys cringe, but sometimes putting pressure down on the top of the case close to where the black hinge meets to unibody enclosure seems to stop the popping noises. Putting downwards pressure on the hinge, or flipping the computer over and putting pressure on it that way, also seems to alter how much popping noise there is.

If I mess around a bit with applying pressure on different parts of the computer around the hinge, I can usually eliminate the noise. But, the cracking noise when I put the screen all the way back is still there.Any ideas what to do? It's not interfering with the operation of the computer, it's just incredibly annoying and this is only a four month old machine which shouldn't be creaking and cracking already.

PowerPC :: G4 Fan Noise Getting Too Loud

Mar 14, 2007

I had the fans and HDD replaced in my 1.67Ghz PB G4 in January, but I think the fan noise is getting too loud again, plus the HDD randomly squeaks and squeals. The problem with the random squealing is that I can never start the camera on my phone quick enough to record it, and it is completely random! Does anyone know what the normal operating noise is for my laptop, or where I can find this out from? The normal fan noise is OK, but when the processor is under full load and the fans kick in to full speed, it sounds like the vacuum cleaner is on in the room. Should I take it back to the shop? It was 'repaired' roughly 2months ago.

Mac Pro :: Low Fan Speed But Loud Fan Noise?

Jul 3, 2012

I've noticed that most Macs have their fans run around 2000RPM, maybe 1300RPM. I was surprised to find that my CPU fan runs at only 500RPM pretty much all the time. However, it is much louder than those other Macs that have higher fan speeds.

Oh, and in case there is a misunderstanding, the fans are NOT running fast, and the temps are low. I've seen a few people complaining about this only to have answers about reducing the fan speed.

MacBook Pro :: Playing MKV Files - Loud Fan Noise

Nov 1, 2009

I have a MacBook Pro 2009 with a 500GB drive (WDigital, I replaced the 160GB). I was using Perian to play mkv movies, and yesterday I downloaded Plex to try it out. But in both every time I play a Mkv file the fans start spinning, I think it's the fans or maybe the hard drive. But it's quite a loud whoosh all throughout the movie. Is this normal or playing a mkv file shouldn't make any noise at all? Should it use a lot of CPU? I'm using Leopard latest version.

MacBook Pro :: Fan Noise Very Loud / Feel Vibrations

Feb 10, 2010

Anyways, at the moment my mac is around 6 months old and just recently I am noticing that the fan is starting to vibrate- like when I type on the mac with my palms rested on the computer I can feel the vibrations. Now it is subtle but was not there before. As I am typing this the fan is at 2000 rpm. Also, when I am not out with the computer. I hook it up to my 23 inch monitor and a portable keyboard. Now when I do this I can hear a very loud noise coming form the computer while using it as a desktop. Almost as it its straining to use it. Its not so much a violent noise as it is that the fan seems to be over working.

I dont know if I am getting paranoid or if this is a serious problem- I have a 3 year warranty from bestbuy. The small vibrations I can feel form the computer seem to be like a small issue- however my friend beside me with the same model- her mac is silent and doesn't vibrate subtly. However, I am more worried about the louder noise it makes when I hook it up at work. Like when i put the computer to sleep I can tell a substantial noise different in terms of it going silent after I put it to sleep.

MacBook :: Fan Running Constantly With Loud Noise

Jun 22, 2010

I've just purchased a new Macbook. I'm very happy with it aside from the fan noise, which seems a little loud to me. Now, before I bring it into the Apple Store to have it looked at I just want to check and see if maybe I'm just being overly picky. I downloaded iStat, based on some Google searching I did on the subject and my fans are running around 2000 rpm, which I understand is normal. But in my apartment, which is admittedly quiet, I can hear my fan running constantly. It isn't extremely loud, but it isn't totally quiet either. I'm just wondering what level of noise I should reasonably expect out of my Macbook.

Mac Pro :: Fans Making Loud Noise For Few Seconds On Startup

Sep 27, 2009

I just received my new Mac Pro from apple on Saturday. This thing is a beast! I am planning on running apps from Final Cut Studio 3, Photoshop, After Effects, and others. 2.66 Quad/6GB RAM (OWC)/640GB HD/ATI 4870

I have a few questions.
1.) Is it normal for the Mac Pro's fans to make a lot of noise when you first start it up or wake it from sleep? My fans make a lot of noise for about 16 seconds or so.
2.) I am planning to put a second optical drive in it. Is there a way to eject only one tray at a time, or will it do both?

Now, I am selling my iMac for around $800 and I am looking at some upgrades:
An additional 21.5" Acer LCD display
A mini display port to dvi adapter
A LG blu ray burner
Two 1TB samsung internal HDs
A blu ray player (I do not have one yet)
Elgato Eye TV hybrid

Intel Mac :: White 2006 Loud Humming Noise?

May 11, 2012

I have a 2006 White Intel Imac and I recently replaced the Superdrive with a non apple Panasonic Superdrive Model: UJ-85J-B from a used Acer Laptop.  The replacement drive has no sensor circuit board.  After putting it back together there was a loud humming noise and I assumed it was the new drive but when I took it out and started the Imac without it the noise remained?  Now I am thinking it is the fan just below where the Superdrive sits?  I blew out as much dust as I could from this fan and around the bottom of the case and that made the noise just a little less annoying.  It sounds like it is about to take off like an jet airplane?

My old PB 12" made this noise after I had dropped it on floor from about 3 feet. I didnt drop my mac mini, i barely used it for 2 hours before i had to leave on my trip. The sound eventually goes away though, once the mini heats up a little i guess. So i'm pretty convinced it's the fan, but why would it suddenly do this?
