Applications :: Record From 4 Cameras Simultaneously?

Jan 5, 2011

I am looking for some software for mac that allows me to record from up to 4 webcams at one time. So far I've only found this one called EvoCam, but I don't feel like paying that much and it's got way more features then I need so it's not worth it. I don't mind paying a bit of money but 95% of the features in EvoCam are useless to me.

OS X :: IMac Security From Neighbors Wireless

May 30, 2009

I have done many searches and my questions have not been answered to my satisfaction. I'm sure it is because I don't understand it all yet.

Question 1, My neighbor is a real d*&k and has wireless set up, according to him he can pick up any computer a long ways away. My new iMac (2 wks old) can he hack it even if I don't have any wireless set up on it yet?

Question 2, I have Airport Express to use only for my speakers and possibly a wireless printer down the road. The Airport Express will be used in one room only and it is the room directly across from the the room he has his station set up in (approximately 16'). If I hook the Express up, how do I stop him from hacking my system via his wireless base station to access my iMac?I know I am a little paranoid, but I just don't trust this guy at all. I know search is my friend and I have tried to us it, but I guess I'm not smart enough about wireless to feel comfortable. So thank you in advance for your knowledge on the subject.

OS X :: Security In Wireless Connection - Protected Network?

Dec 16, 2009

Lately I've been using my schools wireless connection, and when I have AirPort on, I noticed that on Share tab, on Finder, I can see anothers PC's and Macs that are using the same wireless, I tried to enter on another mac and I saw some folders and documents, I was logged as a guest! So the question here is: when I'm using AirPort, with the osx firewall, can somebody see my folders like I saw the other?

Hardware :: Security On Wireless Printing With Time Capsule

Jun 1, 2009

About an hour ago I was just sitting in my apartment working, when suddenly my printer starts printing pages. Some road directions to a place I've never heard of. Someone in my building must somehow have gotten access to my printer, right? My printer is hooked up as a USB printer to my Time Capsule, through which I've made a wireless network. I've just spent an hour making sure my Time Capsule and its network are WPA2 password protected, and searching forums for similar issues. Both the Time capsule and my network were password protected, though I changed the passwords again for good measure, and made the network invisible. No one could access my printer without also having access to my network, correct? (it's not a wireless printer, it's an older HP deskjet).

how this may have happened, or more important, how to make sure it doesn't happen again? Am I missing some security step I do notice that when I go into the Airport utility, I can see other people's devices-- some other Airport and base station. Is this normal? Is it part of the issue?

Hardware :: Finding Digital SLR Cameras?

Jan 27, 2010

I am in the market for a digital SLR at a decent price - not wanting entry-level as such but don't need to pay big-bucks for a pro model.

Basically it is for two purposes:

1) Getting started in Digital SLR photography

2) Photography buildings and architecture on an upcoming trip to the Middle East.

So, a couple of friends who know about this have recommended the Nikon D40 - I have seen this model and priced it and it looks a good deal.

My main question is that it is around 6 MP - I have heard many pros and cons re this...is it a problem? Is this camera the best in its price-range or are there any other suggestions?

MacBook Air :: FaceTime Vs ISight Cameras?

Oct 20, 2010

So I noticed that Steve kept saying that the new MacBook Air shipped with the FaceTime camera. I was wondering about this all day long, so I have to ask now.

On the Notebook comparison page of Apple.com, it even notes that they are 2 different features. What on earth is the difference?

Does the new FaceTime program only work on the Air? Is it a better quality camera? Maybe it's just that they wanted to drop the iSight name, and bring FaceTime to the computer audience?

Hardware :: Next Step Up For Video Cameras

I'd like some suggestions for the next step up in video cameras after the built-in iSight that came with my MacBook. The plan is to do some random video capture for a website. Not arty or necessarily Hi Res, just a good basic camera that can 1) be mounted on a tripod or stand and 2) is relatively inexpensive.

OS X :: Remote Access Of Cameras In Macs?

Mar 1, 2010

As you all probably have heard by now, some schools that give computers to students have been accessing the cameras in Macs to spy on the people using them. My sister is a college professor and her school gave her a Mac with a camera, how can she verify that no one has been spying on her? Is there anything she can do to prevent it from happening in the future?

Applications :: Viewing CCTV Cameras With IE?

Apr 24, 2010

I think this is the correct place to put this.... but here it goes.

I live in a sketchy area of Atlanta, and I'm a pilot so I'm gone about half the month. I had a CCTV system installed with an internet ready DVR. But, like most DVRs - I need ActiveX to be able to use it from remote locations.

Now - I have two macs, an iMac G4 PowerPC with the 17in swivel monitor, and a MBP. I normally carry the MBP to work with me, but I ordered an iPad 3G which I will be carrying from here on out.

I want to get IE with ActiveX on the iMac G4 and then uses an app such as LogMeIn on the iPad to access my DVR (through the iMac) when I'm out of town. How I do this is beyond me, and it makes it more complicated since it's not an intel based Mac.

IMac :: ISight Cameras Use A USB Bus Connection To The System

Apr 30, 2009

According to the Guides section of the forum, the built in iSight cams use a USB bus connection to the system. Has anyone ever "harvested" the iSight from broken iMacs or MacBooks and wired them for external use? I would imagine that they'd make great fixed focus surveillance cams.

Mac Pro :: 27" - Multiple Monitors - Disable The ISight Cameras?

Apr 15, 2010

Forgive me if this has been discussed before, but a search didn't reveal the exact answer I was looking for. Lots of discussion of multiple monitors on MBP's though. I am considering purchasing a MacPro and want 3 monitors (probably 3 24" or possibly 27" if they are out by the time I purchase the computer). One window I wanted devoted to Windows under VMWare Fusion, another window for my dictation window (I am a physician that does dictations at home), and the third for viewing lab/radiology results when dictating. What will i need to set up 3 monitors? Do I need 3 separate video cards, or is one video card enough to drive 3 27" monitors? Is there a way to disable the iSight cameras on the two side monitors and only have the middle monitor's iSight functional?

PowerPC :: How To Record VHS To DVD

Apr 28, 2008

My daughters have tasked me with transferring the childhood VHS memories to DVDs for future fun. I have a G4 PPC 733MHz with 640MB RAM and 256KB L2 Cache. What would be the best thing to upgrade to speed up this process, the RAM, the Cache, both?

Also, since I'm shopping for a DVD burner to use with this, I'm assuming I'd want Firewire? And what speed should I look for-- 18X?

The last 1hr tape took about 12 hours to record, render, and burn, so I'm hoping there's a faster way.

Hardware :: Time Capsule Join Wireless Network/Will All Traffic Go Mac Wireless Router

Jan 5, 2011

I have just got my 1Tb time capsule and there are a lot of confusing descriptions of how to connect it.

At the moment I have just selected "join existing wireless network" which is a ADSL 2.4ghz G Router that came with my internet package (Thompson TG585 v7).

Does this mean that all traffic goes via the ADSL Router and that I will not be using the 5ghz band when I back up so that all the data will follow a path like this and have slow data rates? :

MAC --2.4ghz--> ADSL Router --2.4ghz--> TC

or will I be communicating directly with the TC at 5ghz for backups and data transfer and 2.4ghz with the ADSL router for internet like this? :

MAC --5ghz--> TC
ADSL Router --2.4ghz--> MAC

If this is not a good setup, what setup would allow me to get the full speed to the time capsule and be connected to the internet.

Hardware :: Extended Wireless Network - Multiple Airport Express Wireless Setup

May 14, 2009

I'm working in a home/home-office environment right now which was setup by someone else and I've noticed some odd network behavior when moving about the property. Looking at the setup, the relevant portion is: Cable modem - Airport Extreme - 10 port wired switch - 3x Airport Express in different areas of the house. The configuration of each device has the Extreme and all three Express devices set to "create a wireless network" with the network name the same for all four of them. I am not a networking expert but I would have thought that the Extreme should be set to be the "master" in a WDS network and the Express should each be set to participate in that WDS network. If they're all hosting their own wireless network with the same name and the coverage overlaps, how does a PC know which one it's using? Or maybe this doesn't matter. I just know that when we move from one room to another we frequently have to re-select the wireless network to establish connectivity.
