Hardware :: Unable To Upgrade Macbook's HD?
May 13, 2010
So my old Macbook is looking a little jammed up and long in the tooth, so I'm considering picking up a 2.5" SATA laptop HD to expand it a bit. I have a few questions:
1. How big can I go? I'm looking at a 500 GB HD from newegg.
2. 5400 RPM or 7200 RPM? I've heard that 7200 RPM can eat up more battery power faster, and I'd like to avoid that. Is the performance boost worth it?

I have a mid-2010 15'' MBP and I was considering upgrading the hard-drive to SSD. Wanted to see if the process is fairly simple and recommended SSD drives which are popular and of course fast.

I have OS X.5.8; I bought OSX Snow Leopardabout two years ago, but never installed. I want to upgrade to Snow Leopard at long last (and maybe to Lion). But when I put the Snow Leopard disk in, I can hear my disk drive trying and trying, and then it just spits it out. I know disk drive works. & I bought the disk from an Apple store. Is the disk bad - or is it that my MacBook can't be upgraded to Snow Leopard?

Last week my hard drive broke (with Snow Leopard) and I brought my macbook pro to an Apple Store, the HD was totally broken and they couldn't restore any data. They installed a new hard drive with Lion, when I got home I restored my data with Time Machine, but now Safari and VLC aren't responding, Safari opens but that's it and VLC doesn't even opens. Also the CPU of VLC and Webprocess gets to 100 %.

So I got my first laptop and decided to splurge and got a mac. Now it's great, works great, took me a while to get used to the OS but love my mac now. I use it predominantly for surfing and just basic but am also doing filmmaking. My friend has a macbook pro with 4gb ram and better proccessor, and we used that for film editing, but want to make upgrade mine into one as well (filmmaking laptop). I also may want to use it for gaming (starcraft), photoshop and just a whole bunch of apps and programs. Should I upgrade the ram, get it upgraded for me (get someone to put in the ram) should I even buy ram, is there anything I can do to make a faster processor? Also, my internet is kinda slow, anything I can do to speed it up? Finally, my mac sometimes lags when there's a lot off apps open so I was thinking of upgrading it. I don't have much of a budget (probably not even a 100) so I need something cheap, but don't want shotty second hand stuff. How much can I add, and what else can I do? On another note, Ive been using firefox as my default browser and have added a whole bunch off addons, any other programs I should get for firefox OR any programs I should get for my mac?

TI used an external HD to back up everything first. I upgraded and it went just fine. Now neither USB port will recognize anything plugged in. iphone, ipod, camera, external HD, nothing. Someone suggested zapping the pram, but that didn't work.

I currently have a PowerBook G4 1.5Ghz 2GB RAM 167Mhz bus. In the process of troubleshooting a minor problem, I was instructed to delete some .plist files. Since then, I am experiencing application crashes which seem to be related to the video card? QuickTime crashes every time I try to play something. iPhoto crashes whenever I try to play a slideshow, and all of my screensavers are gone and System Preferences crashes every time i try to access the screensaver pane. The errors all start with "EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION" and "GLRendererFloat."
A colleague told me to just upgrade to 10.5 and that should fix my problems. I have a copy of 10.5.6, but I am nervous. Can I upgrade directly to 10.5.6 or do I have to get 10.5 installed first? Will all of my apps still run on leopard? I am worried that Cubase LE will not work (primary use of the powerbook is as a DAW.)

I am thinking about upgrading my G5 to Leopard. I currently have Panther installed and was going to jump right to Leopard. Are there any issues I will need to be aware of in the upgrading process?

I just recieved my brothers older computer and `i am discovering that I need to upgrade since my ipod touch and many other things dont work. I have 10.3.9 but I was hoping to upgrade, but am not sure what would be the best option. I know that since I have a PowerPC G5 my options are a little smaller. I am also worried about spending too much money.

Have made several attempts to both upgrade and remove/reinstall Quicktime from my Windows XP installation to latest version and always get the same varient of this message Usually the path it is trying for install is C:Documents and SettingsTom GardnerApplication DataAppleApple Software Update The path it tried for uninstall was something like (from memory, did not write down)C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataAppleInstaller Cache My XP is up to date with all the latest uSoft changes and lots of drive space.Â
I have Administrator rights. All of the folders the installer or the uninstaller are trying to access are there and I can access them as can all my other applications and installers. I did re-register my VB (which is up to date)So I did a search for QuickTime on my root drive and found copies all over the place including at 5 copies of the download packages. I moved one to a folder on my desktop and tried the installation that way. It seemed to work up to this point I've pushed the OK button pointing to the location of the installer package for about 30 minutes with no progress and when I canceled I got a "The older version of QuickTime cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group." message.Â

I recently replaced my MacBook Pro's (13-inch, Mid 2012) default hard drive with a third party SSD. I'm not sure if this would have any affect on it, but I can't upgrade to OS X 10.7.4. I used Lion Recovery Disk Assistant to install Lion on the drive and to bring it up to 10.7.3, and when it was finished, I checked Software Update and there was no update for 10.7.4. I downloaded the update directly from the Apple website (both the client and the combo updates) and neither of them will allow me to update! I get a message in the Installer that says, "Mac OS Update Combined can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet thre requirements for this update." Again, I'm not sure if this has to do with the third party SSD I installed or not. Other than the inability to update the OS, the SSD works wonderfully.

I have a three-four year old iBook which runs fine (I mainly use my iBook for email, Internet, and Microsoft Office) but I'm thinking of upgrading my OS and am wondering what would be the best OS to upgrade to. In case you're wondering, I'm considering the upgrade because there are a couple of applications I would like to demo (and maybe buy) that require a minimum OS of 10.4.

I was doing a software update in an outdated Mac OS X 10.7.3 to get all the latest updates through its Apple Software Update. However, one of them failed to upgrade: iTunes v10.6.1 to v10.6.3. After rebooting to let Mac OS X 10.7.3 to 10.7.4, Apple Software Updater shows it 97% partially downloaded. I have over 31 GB free, so it can't be a free disk space problem. I tell it to resume download, but it quickly fails from 169 MB to about 172.7 MB (176.9 MB is the whole size) with "The update "iTunes" can't be installed. The update could not be verified. It may have been corrupted during the downloading. The update will be downloaded and checked again the next time that Software Update runs."Â
I think the download is bad and is needs to be manually(?) deleted for me to retry. Where is this corrupted file at?

I currently am running ILife 08 and IWork 08; what can I expect to see during the 09 upgrade?
Does the 09 apps just upgrade themselves or will I have to follow some other procedures for installing ILife & Iwork 09?
I am running Snow Leopard as my OS.

After "upgrading" from OS x 10.4.11 to OS x 10.5 to OSX 10.5.2 slowly the print capabilities went down the drain. The description of the path to destruction is. With OS X 10.4 no problems using the Lexmark Z810. After changing to 10.5 printing was only by removing the usb connector then removing the printer from the system preferences and than re-connect the usb plug of the printer.
Under 10.5.2 only an error message "unable to read CUPS raster data" appears. After which the printer windows claims that the printer is ready for use. But absolutely no printed paper is coming out. The same procedure as with 10.5 does not have any effect. Removing the Lexmark files from the library and re-installing from the install dvd does not help either.
System: Imac G5 from 2005 with 2 GB memory and now 10.5.2 as os-software.

I'm unable to upgrade from my 10.6.8 configuration on my Mac Pro running OS X Server to OS X Lion Server. I've purchased both Lion and Lion Server, but each time I attempt to run the updates to 10.7+ I get error messages saying to install 10.7 or to download Lion Server - though when I do that it tells me that I need to install 10.7. I upgraded from Yosemite 10.10 to 10.10.1 a bit over a week ago. I am using a Mac Pro (Mid-2010). iMessage worked fine after my upgrade from Mavericks 9.5 to Yosemite 10.10. When the 10.10.1 upgrade came out, I upgraded. Now, I cannot activate iMessage. I get a message that basically says my Apple ID is not recognized. The same Apple ID and iMessage work fine on my rMPB (late 2013) running the upgraded Yosemite 10.10.1. I have not, in all my attempts to activate, received the error code that some folks mention.Â

This seems to be a problem due to the mac partition I think as I've looked around to solve the problem but nothing seems to work. I've tried changing the AppleMNT.sys file in the drivers folder as one message board suggests but sadly that file does not exist on my windows partition.

I have several iMac machines and MacBook Pros that were upgraded to Mavericks. Since the upgrade they are unable to connect to a file share simply by clicking on the server in a Finder window and then clicking on the "Connect As..." button. (As I understand it, this is the Bonjour service.) This has worked in the past and works on machines running 10.8.x
I am able to connect to the very same file share if I use "Connect to Server" and type in the afp:// address.
Nothing has changed in the network that I'm aware of.
