I am having trouble getting my emac to boot from an external CD rom with Mac OS X in it. When I boot up the machine I hold down option to get the list of bootable volumes. Just the internal drive shows up. Once the machine is booted, I can access the cdrom, just not when booting.
View 1 RepliesI recently had to take my mac mini to pieces to upgrade its RAM to 2GB. I initially had problems with booting up - it would get to the white screen with the apple logo and think for about 2 minutes then restart and repeat the process indefinitely. I managed to fix this by removing the clock battery for a while. I also zapped the PRAM after installing. But now, the strange problem is that OS X wont boot up (it will get to the white screen, think, then restart) if my firewire devices are connected. In case this helps, I have two HDDs and a DVD burner connected in daisychain to the firewire port. It definitely boots up fine with any other peripherals/connections. Once OS X has booted successfully, I can then connect my Firewire devices which seem to work fine.
I have tested my new RAM with memtest and rember and everything seems fine. After upgrading my RAM, I would also get two alerts on start up - "Do you want the application "configd" to accept incoming network connections" and "Do you want the application "mdnsresponder" to accept incoming network connections ". I have fixed this problem with the help of this post: [URL]. Aside from the horrible idea that I have damaged some hardware, does anyone have any clues as to how I can mend this? A wise colleague of mine said that if it was a windows machine, he would look at the BIOS settings as he thinks my computer is trying to boot from one of the HDDs, and that I should try to find a list of boot drives and remove the firewire HDDs if they're on it. I know macs don't run BIOS, but is there anything similar I could check?

I installed Windows 7 through Bootcamp and I got everything installed perfectly!
I partitioned my Mac's hard drive into 3 before the Windows installation:
-Mac OS
-Data For Windows
-System for Windows itself
It all worked fine and i could drag and drop anything into that Data Hard drive through Windows very easily. However, when I came back to my Mac OS and partitioned my Mac Hard Drive into 2 parts(Which makes 4 partition now) and tried booting back up to my Windows, it gave me that error. I then decided to re-partition it like before which was Mac, Data and Windows. Booted it back to Windows and it gives me the same error again. I have an attached Picture showing how my partitions look now. Does anyone know how to fix it? I think it's because what my Windows is booting from is the Data Hard Drive but not my Windows 7 Hard Drive with the OS on it. Is there a way to change it's place or to tell it which Hard Drive to boot from?
So earlier after installing a windows 7 ultimate 64 bit RTM copy into bootcamp, things started acting up;
After installing some updates for 7, rebooting, it took about a minute to get the HD icons up to even choose one, and after that it was fine, except then the windows partition eventually just had a blinking cursor in the top right and stayed there.
I went into OSx, removed the 7 partition completely! my HD is one partition for Osx, but when I boot now, it takes yearsssss to just boot to osx, but if I hold option, then I instantly get a Macintosh HD (that's it) and it will go straight away.
What do I need to do? Reinstall SL? Please god no.
Partitions seem to be all messed up, maybe I will re create a windows install, and remove it again. (Xp this time)
Edit, This happened on 2 different MBP's one a 2.8 duo after I put on 7, they both take forever to boot to OSx. (With no BC partition even on)

Not only will holding Option while booting not work, but all of the other boot tricks (safe mode, single user mode, etc), will not work. I am at a loss. I also don't have an optical drive in this particular MBP. I have an SSD where it once was.

I'm receiving the "no boot-able device insert boot disk and press any key" error every time I go to turn on my macbook air. The screen chimes, turns on and then goes black. I've been holding down the option key and that seems to work but do I have to do this every time I turn my computer on from now on?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a weird problem with my MacBook Air. I was browsing the web when I think I hit a wrong keyboard combination. I was trying to select text cmd+a. But a small white window popped up with some text. After that safari started acting weird. Whenever I tried to open a new link it did not simply open the link like usual. But it downloaded it into my download folder. I also noticed that I could only type special symbols.
So I tried to reboot my MacBook Air. Usually it boots right to the login screen. But now it first shows a startup screen where I can select a boot device. So I select macintosh HD and it boots up like normal. But I can still only type weird symbols so I cant login. First I thought maybe my alt key is stuck but it works just fine and I did not do anything with it.

Can I download the installer to a flash drive and then install it on my eMac? I currently have 5,480 photos in one library. This is what I hope to accomplish with the upgrade to a better iPhoto:
1) option to include comments (metadata) alongside the photos in the message text when e-mailing photos to somebody?
2) let you print a contact sheet and include the photo comments underneath each photo?
3) burn photos to disc from within iPhoto, that will preserve the comments along with the photos? Later, you can insert the disc and it will show up in iPhoto with the photos and comments intact?
4) backup to iBook with comments/metadata included?
Im purchasing an eMac in a couple days, but am a little confused about performance. Its a 1 GHZ PowerPC G4 with 256MB of Ram but my last pc blew up (literaly) However the 1GB of RAM that was in still works and will fit in it.
Besides that my Questions pertain to Leopard and Time Machine. I Know that Leopard will run on this Mac, But what about performance? and I heard that the eMacs cant experience the i candy Time Machine offers.
How So? is it true? I really want the Ability to use Time Machine. (Right now i'm just using Genie Timeline for my Windows 7 PC)
My hard drive says it's capacity is 57.26 GB. It says 52.14 GB is being used, leaving me with only 5.12 GB free. I don't have any music, and all the applications only tally up to like 1.7GB, so what is using up all the rest of my hard drive space?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI changed from at&t to comcast and I have had so many problems with emailing. I finally got comcast to get me to atleast be able to read my email but I can't reply to any emails. My operation system is a Mac OS X 10.3. My apple system correlates to M8951LL/A specs. I think that comcast only supports OS X 10.4 and higher, mine is a 10.3. Does anyone know if I can upgrade to a 10.4 with a computer this old? Â

I have just replaced my old eMac, and want to recycle it. So I need to wipe the HD. I tried to use Disc Utilities, and it wouldn't do it. I went to the page to restore/erase, etc. but when I selected my HD, the button for 'erase' was grayed out.

well i cant seem to find tiger 10.4 but i have found leopard.

I just got a USB 2.0 emac for nothing that was going to the recycler. The door specs are: 1.25 ghz/256/40GB/Combo "About this mac" shows that it has 512mb RAM installed in one slot, and it is running 10.4.11 Anyways, it seems to be working great so far. I was able to get one stick of 256mb supported RAM from the only other 1.25 ghz machine in the lot - the rest were 700 - 800mhz emacs. Is it OK to mix the 256 with the 512? I've read many places that it is fine, but will it actually boost the speed of apps and things, or should I just leave it as is? I read somewhere that it might slow down the speed between the two RAM capacities. I don't want to spend any money to buy more RAM.

So its like 140gig of room. But I only have a cd burner and dvd drive. Would it be cheaper to install an new internal drive? Or pay more for the external(cause there is no hard installation). What drives would work? And I have a $200 dollar gift card to bestbuy or futureshop.

I am wondering because of the click sound if it may actually be the hard-drive causing the pausing issues (as processor/loading noise on macs is generally silent). I have done all of the disk utility fixes etc. with no positive results; disk utility can not find any problems with the HD.

These comps fit in his budget of approx 100$. I was planning to buy an imac/emac with the following specs
500mhz (or faster) Processor (or 600/700mhz)
256mb (or more) Ram (512mb)
20gb Hard drive (adding external memory)
with the newer os x operating system.
My question will these computers fit his needs? He writes emails, he writes a ton of word documents, and he views videos off youtube and off a media player.
My question is that will these spec'd computers be able to run his needs efficiently?
Are there programs that are similar to the windows (which he is used to)?
Can you run microsoft office on these computers?
If not what would be the recommended specs I should look for?
