-changed from WAP2 to WEP security, still nothing
-and changed the radio signal so that it was b/g compatible
It's weird, the internet is fine, I can access the internet. But when I go to network places in the XP computer I can't see the time capsule! What do you think is wrong?
Apple on Tuesday refreshed its AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule wireless products by adding a new Guest Network feature and support for simultaneous 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz dual-band networking. Time Capsule drives are now also accessible over the Internet for MobileMe subscribers.
The new Guest Network feature, available on the new AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule, allows you to set up a secondary network for friends and visitors with Internet-only access so you don't have to hand out your WiFi password.
Meanwhile, the new combined 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz mode allows your AirPort base stations to simultaneously support iPhones and other 802.11b/g devices operating at 2.4 GHz, while also broadcasting 802.11n wide signals in the 5GHz band to maximize throughput for notebooks and devices such as Apple TV.
Previous-generation AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule models can only run in one mode or the other, providing either wide compatibility or the highest possible network performance, but not both.
Also new to Time Capsule -- and oddly omitted from any of Apple's press-releases -- is that MobileMe subscribers using Mac OS X 10.5.x Leopard can now now access all of their files on their Time Capsule drive over the Internet.
You need only to register their Time Capsule with your MobileMe account. The Time Capsule drive will then appear in the Finder sidebar of your Mac just like any other attached drive.
"It's like having your own personal file server wherever you go," Apple says.
The new Time Capsule, which combines an 802.11n router and server-grade hard disk for automatic wireless back-up with Time Machine, and is immediately available in two models: a 500GB model for $299 and a 1TB model for $499.
1. Dual networking. You can run N on 5.0 ghz and at the same time run A/B/G whatever on 2.4 ghz for legacy devices such as the iPhone. No speed hit.
2. Easy to use guest mode which will open up one of the frequencies for use as a password less (optionally you can add a password) access to the net but locking off your computers, printer etc. on the other encrypted frequency. Great for having friends over and getting them on your network without having to open it up to attack or having to give out huge passwords for them to enter.
3. If you have MobileMe then the new Time Capsule FILE SHARES EVERYTHING OFF THE ENTIRE DRIVE TO THE NET!

I'm using genie time machine at the moment which is really good but i wanted a wireless backup solution, i mainly use windows on my mac because i use 3ds max so its really for the windows side. Am i better off buying a decent NAS drive that i know will work for windows and try and get time machine to see it using the hack to get it to work or vice versa? Also can you upgrade the HDD in time machines?

Now I can't get the PC to bring back the screen to try and connect to the TC. Any help restarting the service to get this back on-line?

The Problem:
1.I configured my TC many times with all possible configuration, the airport is working fine (LED always GREEN) but whenever i try to access the HDD it gives me: Username/Password Error, Netbios problem (Win 7) OR Semaphore timeout period expired (Win XP)...
2.When I restart the TC or the LinkSys It works one time perfectly but as soon as i change anything on TC or restart the computers cannot access again.......................
I'm getting a new 13" MBA, upgrading from a 2006 macbook. I have it all backed up to time capsule. Can I just connect the MBA to my time capsule and restore the macbook image?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble getting a friend of mine's setup to work. He's got an HP Photosmart C4480 (usb to Time Capsule) It prints fine from his macbook, but not at all from his wife's PC (laptop with XP). The PC will print fine if i directly connect the printer (usb) to the laptop (but that kinda defeats the point). I tried changing the address from time capsule.local to the ip address of the time capsule (found that suggested somewhere online) and that didn't work.
Not sure if it was before or after the above, but it worked *once* when I had the laptop connected to the TC via Ethernet (which, again, kinda defeats the point). I also tried configuring a plain generic TCP/IP printer port and setting up the printer that way (bypassing Bonjour) but it didn't work. (EDIT: Just saw a guide linked, not sure if I chose Custom Settings for the Network card - will try that first when I go back over - would still love to know if there are any other things I could be trying.) What other things can I try with the hardware they're using?
I know that firmware 7.4.1 has caused problems for people using Time Capsules with Windows PCs: [URL] I know that this problem affects the original TCs as I actually have an original TC and I had the problem with firmware 7.4.1 (fixed by downgrading to 7.3.2). Does anyone know if the problem with 7.4.1 only affects the older TCs or does it affect the new updated TCs (released earlier this year) as well? I want to buy another TC, but not if it has the 7.4.1 problem and not if it can't be downgraded to 7.3.2.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a MBP and a Time Capsule. Still waiting on the MBP, but went ahead and set up the TC as a router for my current Dell laptop. In theory, I don't really care since I will have my MBP w/in 2.5 weeks, but is it possible for my Windows machine to see the disk on the TC? I went into TC and set up the workgroup name to be the same as the workgroup on my PC, but I still don't see it. I doubt anyone has done it, but was curious if it's possible. I assume that the Windows client should be able to access that giant disk (or a Windows user would never buy the product). One question though, it shows the filesystem as FAT32. Is that right, or just how it's represented to the Windows client?

I have never had an issue playing with my old router but have recently upgraded to the Time Capsule and I could not connect when I was playing online. I could connect initially but when I would go into a game it just would not allow me to connect to start the game. I then plugged directly into my cable modem and was able to connect right away. Do I need to go into Time capsule and adjust a setting?

- Two Windows XP desptops (connected via Ethernet cable)
- One Windows Vista laptop
Could any Mac users help answer my queries below:
1) Since I'm going to use Time Capsule as backup storage for Time Machine. Can I still manually copy files into its HDD and share those files with other network users?
2) Can all Windows PCs use Time Capsule as a external storage for storing and sharing files even after Time Machine has "marked" it as a backup storage for my MBP?
3) I presume the HDD in Time Capsule is formatted using HFS+. In this situation, do Windows users need to install special software to access the HDD in Time Capsule?
I've searched high and low trying to solve this issue. I want to use Time Capsule as an external hard drive that is readable in Windows so I can transfer over files. I know that the Time Capsule must be formatted as FAT32. I don't even care about my Time Machine backups--I'm fine with deleting them all and reformatting so partitioning need not be done.

If I set the wireless network connection to NAT, the internet works, but my xbox 360 wont show up in the media streaming options in windows media player. However, if I change the network settings to bridged, I lose my internet connection (well.. sometimes it works.. 80% of the time it doesnt..) Connecting to bridged is the only way I can connect to my 360, and only some of the time where the internet will work. Is there a way to fix the problem with bridged or NAT so they both work together?

I am able to connect to it as a server, but only from within my network. when I go to connect, it appears to be going through the internetz and connecting, but when I move outside of my network it does not work.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Windows XP desktop will connect flawlessly to my Time Capsule when I turn off all wireless security. I am even able to use Airport Utility on the desktop to change the wireless security to WPA/WPA2 Personal.
However, it is never able to connect wirelessly to the Time Capsule when WPA/WPA2 Personal is being utilized. The Airport Utility cannot locate the Time Capsule when WPA/WPA2 Personal is utilized.
I had a macbook pro with time capsule and was using the TC as a hard drive. Macbook pro logic board has gone so until I can get a new mac, i have a windows vista laptop. I have connected to the TC, wireless working, mapped the TC in the Z:drive. When I go into the TC drive, i can only see the backed up bundled data rather than all the other crap i have saved in there. I think I'm missing a stage somewhere, perhaps need to mount the drive through windows but don't know how. In order to access all the songs etc on the TC via my macbook, I had to 'Enter Time Machine'. Seems like I have to do this through windows but have no clue where to start.
Is there a way for a windows vista machine to access TC hard drive data?
Will I have to perform a reset and configure the TC to the windows machine?
Will a reset erase the hard drive?
I've read is related to 10.4 or before and it appears there's some differences in menu options so I'm not putting two-and-two together. Just bought myself a new unibody macbook for x-mas. So the deal is I'm having trouble getting it to see and recognize my windows workgroup home network. I see tips on enabling windows networking or smb or other stuff but i can't seem to find those options in 10.5.5 (now updated to 10.5.6). If there's a manual or reference document specific to 10.5.5/.6 that's available.
View 17 Replies View RelatedI would like to send my iTunes music directory to my windowsXP box but when I log in to windows from the Mac and try to transfer these files, I get a message on the Mac saying "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient priviledges". I'm running MacOS 10.4.3.
To do this I usually select 'go' on the finder pull down menu and select 'connect to server'. The mac will find the windows box ok and connect to it (i've got a folder in the windows root directory set for sharing). I just cant send anything to it!!! :-(
I am logged into the mac as an administrator and I have given all directories, subdirectories and files that I want to transfer adminstrator read and write priviledges.... it's still saying I don't have the rights to move them though.
Question - if I have a 500GB hard drive in my MacBook, but 80GB are partitioned separately for Windows via boot camp, can I use a 500GB Time Capsule?

View 21 Replies View RelatedI am planning on purchasing a mac mini solely for the purpose of playing music - it will be hooked up to a hi-fi amplifier and speakers. All of the music that will be on the computer will be in lossless format, which is very large. I will need a lot (320+ GB?) of storage.
I'm wondering if I can cut costs by buying an old 80 GB mini and augmenting its hard drive with a time capsule. I was planning on buying a time capsule anyway, so I could save something like $300. My questions are: would I be able to stream music from the time capsule to the mac mini? Would I be able to import music from itunes directly onto the time capsule? If I hook the mini up to the time capsule via USB, can it serve as a hard-drive, even if my internet is down? Is it going to be much more worth my time to buck up and buy a new 320 GB mini?
I bought a Mini yesterday and am attempting (read: failing) to set up my home network. Here is what I have: Netgear WNDR3700 home network with a WPA2 wireless network. A Windows 7 (completely updated) desktop with file sharing but not home group on. I have even deactivated my windows firewall while attempting to set this up. A Mac Mini running OSX 10.4 with Windows Networking activated
I originally hoped to plug my mac mini in and, while I was quickly able to browse the web, I was less than successful in accessing my shared files that are on my windows 7 machine. I then deactivated the homegroup and simply "shared" the folders via right-clicking and sharing to all users on the network. I am unable to see the mac mini when opening up the network which was the first sign of trouble. I have all of the file sharing options on Windows 7 and Mac Mini checked (network discovery, etc.) but do not have any luck. The farthest success I have reached was I manually entered the ip of my windows 7 pc on the mac mini and while I saw the shared folders, they were empty. Note: I do have identical user accounts set up between the two computers, with the same user name and no password.
I have an external 500gb drive plugged into my brand new Time Capsule. The 500gb drive basically stores my entire library of music and my iTunes points to this external drive.
Is it possible to have time machine backup all information on the 500gb drive to the time capsule, so encase the external drive takes a dump, I don't loose my entire music library? Maybe time machine is already doing this, I am not sure.
I will be getting my new Macbook Pro in the near future and am very interested in using Time Machine to wireless back up my data to an external hard drive. I know I can use Time Capsule to do this, but also hear a mention of just getting an Airport Extreme and my own ext. hd. My question is that I have Verizon FIOS Internet and my modem also functions as a wireless router. How would the Time Capsule/Airport Extreme work with this? Is it possible? I do not believe that the Verizon router supports wireless N, and I would like to take advantage of the faster speeds. If I were to connect a Airport Extreme to the wireless router, would I then have 2 routers to choose from and just use the Airport Extreme to use the wireless N? I'm very confused as to how I could make this work.

When it comes to Apple routers I am looking at 2 options - either the base station with an external USB drive or get a 1TB capsule with the buildt in drive and worries regarding reliability.
What I like about the Time Capsule is that it is neat to have all in one, takes up less space and only has 1 plug to attach, while Iike the idea that I can just connect a bigger drive later on the base station solution.
1. Will the connected USB drive function just like the internal drive in the Time Capsule for Time Machine use?
2. Will everything be transparent to Snow Leopard?
3. In case of both units with an attached USB drive - can I control who actually can see the drive and access it?

I recently purchased a Time Capsule to use as a wireless hard drive. I connect to the internet both through wifi and ethernet to a educational network that does not allow extra routers, etc, to be added to the network, therefore I can not use the time capsule for this wifi.
I therefore want to connect to my early 2009 MBP17unibody to both the academic internet network for http/pop3/ftp/etc while simultaneously connecting to external hard drive to store data/itunes-library/etc.
I expect this has been asked before but I can't find any threads where it has. If anyone knows it would be highly helpful. I'd prefer to connect to both wirelessly but I could potentially put up with connecting to either or both with ethernet.
