Hardware :: Adding An Airport Express To My Current Network?

Oct 2, 2008

I am trying to add an Airport Express to my existing wireless network, in order to increase the range of the network.

I've run Airport Utility and gone through the setup wizard - everything seems to have gone of fine, it says "Settings for this Airport Express have been successfully updated" and then it goes into "Waiting for the Airport Express to restart..."

But that restart doesnt happen - or rather, I get the message "Unable to find the Airport Express base station" (words to that effect). And after this, I can no longer find that new Airport Express on the wifi network.

So I reset the base station and tried a manual setup. Same problem - settings updated, Airport Express doesnt restart properly and can no longer be found on the network.

Any ideas what is going on here? I tried it using Mac Mini running 10.5.3 and Airport Utility 5.3.1.

Edit - I just tried this doing this on my Macbook running 10.5.4 and Airport Utility 5.3.2 - same problem.

Hardware :: Loosing Network Connection After Adding Airport Express?

Oct 1, 2009

I added an airport express to my network tonight. The network is wep128 secured which did not show up at first on the express. After I added this, I started to be able to play itunes to my stereo and every once in a while it would drop out. I notice, my network was dropping on my computer. I can manually reconnect, but even then it show disconnected by work with itune and my stereo and even works for sending this note. It will drop again soon.

sometime, i need to reenter my wep assword into my laptop and once it actually seemed to erase my passowrd and said the key would be found automatically

I did not setup a bridge, did not setup static ip addresses, my express and my network have the same passord to access them. just trying to think of other deatails.

Hardware :: Adding Airport Express Destroys Network Performance?

Nov 27, 2009

So I just got a new airport extreme and express (both draft n) with the hopes of redoing the wifi in my house. We previously had two modems on either side of the house and separate networks coming off them and I wanted to get rid of one of the modems and just extend the wifi from the other one.

So I set up the Extreme as the main base on the far side of the house and set up the Express to extend. If I stand in the kitchen with the Express off and am just running off the Extreme, the performance is good. But adding the express, even in the kitchen itself, suddenly drops the performance of the network to an unusable speed. Why? I've been moving it around all day: closer to the Extreme, farther from the Extreme. Nothing seems to hit it. Granted the kitchen is an annoying room with lots of metal and phones and interference, but I simply don't understand why adding the Express should mean a *decrease* in speeds.

Also, interstingly, this seems to mostly affect the download speeds and upload will stay about the same. Not sure why that happens.

My ultimate goal is to be able to add another express (one that I had, with b/g) to the network so that I can get internet to a Slingbox in the bedroom.

Hardware :: Current Linksys Versus AirPort Extreme / Express?

Dec 9, 2009

I need some network guidance as well as if an upgrade is worth it. I currently have a linksys WRT54G firt gen. Its old but works, up until i moved into an area with many different wifi networks. I have tried different channels and what not. I have found a decent one but it still screws up a few comps here and there. My question is would buying the dual band airport extreme fix said issues? Or would buying the express also fix the issue? I am looking for things to get this holiday season and a new router was an option. I really would like to wirelessly print from my mac and pc running windows 7? this would be possible correct? Also is there any real difference between extreme and express to warrant the $80 more. Also how many printers can you configure to the wireless router at the same time?

OS X :: Adding Airport Express To Wired Router?

Jun 5, 2006

I have a PC (running XP Pro) that accesses the internet through a wired router (D-Link) hooked to a cable modem. My boyfriend just moved in with his iBook and Airport Express. I hooked the Airport Express to a LAN port on the wired router, and it basically works fine. He is able to access the internet wirelessly without any trouble. I also connected the printer to Airport Express and he is able to print wirelessly. However, I thought I was going to be able to also print to the printer because following info from Airport FAQ.

FROM AIRPORT EXPRESS FAQ:

Question: AirPort Express connects via wire to my third-party router, and I have plugged a compatible USB printer into AirPort Express. Will it share the printer with my non-Apple computers, too?
Answer: AirPort Express acts as a print server for any Mac OS X 10.2 or later, Windows 2000, or Windows XP computer that is on the same subnet, regardless of whether the third-party router is wired or wireless.

Can anyone comment on this? How can I make this feature work from my wired computer? Is there something I need to do to make them on the same subnet? Also, if there IS a way to print via Airport Express, is there a way for me to access airTunes too?

I did read a somewhat similar situation and this is what was advised. "Manually give it an IP address and subnet in airport admin (under the internet tab). For example if your router IP address is 192.168.x.1 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 give your Airport Express 192.168.x.2 255.255.255.0. i.e. give your Airport Express 1 IP number higher than your router. Also make sure you are not distrupting IP address from your Airport Express, and you are creating a wifi not joining."

MacBook Air :: Adding MBA To Wireless Airport Express As A Second Computer?

Jan 26, 2009

I have a problem I've been working on for over an hour.

I have a uni MBP that has wireless internet and printing through an airport express (just internet and printing, not using Airtunes feature).

I bought a MBA last night and am trying to get it to work as well. It works just fine as far as wireless internet, but the wireless printing simply will not work. I have the printer listed in my MBA and all airport express utility settings seem to be A-OK, it just will not print wirelessly from the MBA. The printer queue just gives me the old Error 300: The printer does not respond.

Hardware :: Airport Extreme Not Forwarding Airdisk To Connected Airport Express Network?

Apr 25, 2010

I have an Airport Extreme, with two USB hard drives connected to it. The Airport Extreme shares these disks to my wireless network via Airport Disks.

Upstairs I have an Airport Express, that wirelessly connects to my Airport Extreme downstairs, and extends the wireless network so I get a good wireless reception upstairs.

My problem is, that it does not seem like me Airport Express does a good job of forwarding my 2 USB Airport Disks to the extended wireless network upstairs.

For example, when I use the AirVideo iPhone app to stream video from my USB Airport Disks I get a server connection error when I go upstairs and the iPad/iPhone switches to the Airport Express networks. I cannot reconnect as long as it is on the Airport Express network. If I turn the airport Express off, and thus switch to the poor wireless reception from the Airport Extreme, I can connect to the USB Airport disks again.

The Airport Express is connected to the Airport Extreme in bridged mode.

Hardware :: Adding AirPort Extreme / Express With Broadband Modem?

Feb 10, 2009

I am finally jumping on the WiFi bandwagon at home - I know my macs pretty well but need advice at this wireless stuff...

1) I currently have a broadband modem that came with my BT broadband account - am I right I do not need to change this - just add an airport extreme/express to it?

2) What should I be considering when I am choosing between express/extreme? is extreme just longer range? I live in a 2 bed flat on 1 floor..

3) I would like to add some storage to this airport so I can store my itunes music on it and have it accessible to my laptop when I come in the house with it - I see airport extreme has a usb port - but is this USB2? if only usb1 then that would be very slow - what's the best way of adding wireless network storage (something like a firewire/usb2 drive like the drobo) to my wireless network?

4) - I am thinking about getting an apple tv - does extreme/express decision make any difference in this regard?

5) - If I want to run itunes through my main stereo - do I need to get a separate airport express for that? (Stereo and broadband modem are in different rooms in the flat) and does my laptop then work as itunes server, sending music from the storage attached to the airport extreme, to the express attached to the stereo?

6) - I see many people use a mac mini in systems like this - what are the advantages of having a separate mac mini added to the system to act as a media server as opposed to just using my laptop?

7) - If am am attaching media storage to a WiFi network - how do I make sure it is secure?

OS X :: Slow Network - Airport Express To Extend The Network

Apr 21, 2010

I have a slow network issue. I'll try to make it as simple as possible.

1 MacBook Pro
1 Airport Extreme
1 Airport Express to Extend the Network

The network to my living room was slow, so I added the Express to extend the network. When connected through the Express, with a Time Machine backup, I'm getting about 500K/sec transfer speeds. When I move the laptop away from the Express and close to the Extreme, the network works much faster, about 5MB/sec. I don't understand why the network is so much slower when using the Airport Express as a network extender. Is the speed difference normally that much? If it's not supposed to be, is there anything I can do?

Hardware :: Adding Time Capsule And Airport Expresses To Existing Network?

Jul 9, 2009

I have a dual-band airport extreme router setup in a closet on the bottom floor of my 3-floor apartment, and I'm in need of some help figuring out how to go about adding some additional networking gear to my existing system

I have a 1TB Time Capsule which I'd like incorporate into my existing network. I have an available ethernet cable on the top floor of my apartment which I would like to connect the Time Capsule to so that I can quickly backup my MacPro (connected to network directly via ethernet), and so if possible I can extend the range of the Wireless-N network that my dual-band router is currently providing (because the signal on the top floor of my apartment isn't as great as I'd like it to be). I'd like to have the Time Capsule configured to only use the Wireless-N network so that my Macbook pro and my wife's Macbook Air will be backup to it via wireless-n speeds at all times.

Hardware :: Extending A Network With Airport Express?

Nov 3, 2010

New here and new mac user all together. I have looked quite a bit for an answer to this question but have not found one that applies directly to my situation.

My dilemma is that my apartment complex has free (unsecured) wireless but currently with my macbook pro, I can not register the signal in my living room. I just got Airport Express with the idea of extending the signal to all areas of my apartment. However when I go to "Join current wireless network", the apartment's signal does not show up (two other networks do show up though they are password protected).

I have read here that certain routers are not compatible with Airport Express (is this true?) and I am wondering if that's a possibility here.

Is there a fix for this? Do I need access to the router?

Had wonderful full house steaming sound with iTunes or Airfoil. Have tried everything i can think of.

Has anybody else had this problem.

Is there a solution. I have reset it several times both hard and soft resets.

OS X :: AirPort Express And WDS Network Not Boosting Signal?

Dec 24, 2009

I want it to provide a boost to the signal in the basement for my touch. As well as stream music from my laptop. The issue Im having is that the music keeps on cutting out. The newer one this is listed under is working fine, but on the other side of the room, it is setup to Extend the 'n' network (which I assume means allow my laptop better signal in the basement.)

The older one is on a b/g network, which I setup as a WDS network and then setup the express as a WDS relay, which I assumed would provide signal strength for the b/g network in the house (so we are running b/g & n). But setting it up as a relay it still loses connection with the laptop (I am assuming this is with the b/g network itself) and I believe that the touch's WiFi connection also drops with the music, because it is all the b/g network.

The b/g network trickles into the basement, but I assumed with the b/g touch setup as a WDS Relay, that it would strengthen the signal for my touch and ALSO keep the signal strong between the laptop and the express (Im guessing they are talking over b/g). But after being setup as a WDS relay the music is still dropping, and I only assume the touch's wifi signal is dropping as well! I also had to setup the ENTIRE b/g network as WDS because I did not get an 'extend range signal'.

OS X :: Network - Comcast - Ethernet - AirPort Express / Extreme?

Jun 21, 2009

I finally convinced a friend to get a Mac and bragged about how easy everything works. He got a new iMac (loves it!) and signed up for Comcast High Speed Internet. Now there is a new MacBook in the house so I explained that all he would need is the AirPort Express in order to share the internet wirelessly for both Mac's. I went to set it up and I screwed everything up, after hours of work I not only couldn't get the Express working, I had to leave him without even ethernet internet. That's really all the info about his setup I have at the moment. So I came home to examine my own setup which is very similar: we both have the same Comcast modem (Arris TM502G) except I have an AEBS and he has a Express.

So I came home to examine my setup, it has been a while since I set mine up but its been flawless wirelessly (I never used the ethernet before). So, I plugged a ethernet cable in to the AEBS and connected my MBP. Works great. So I want to try to cut out the AEBS and just connect via ethernet from my MBP to the cable modem, that's where I start getting IP address problems. When an ethernet cable is connected to the AEBS my IP address is 10.0.1.12 and works fine. When I cut out the AEBS and try to run ethernet directly from my modem to my computer my IP Address changes to 169.254.181.6 and I get an error message saying that "Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect" and sure enough, I can't. Network Diagnostics tells me to configure via DHCP and restart the modem, still no luck. As I was searching tonight I came upon some discussion about Comcast limiting MAC addresses or something?
