Aug 31, 2014I have an original MacBook1,1 running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. It will not start up, I have tried everything on this Apple web page , Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup, besides an erase and reinstall and I don't know what to do. It won't read the Snow Leopard update disk (My other two Macs do). When I restart In Verbose Mode, it always stops right after 'Airport: RSN handshake complete on en1'. When i started my other Mac in Verbose Mode, after 'Airport: RSN handshake complete on en1', it went straight to the login window. I called Apple support and they said that I need to perform an erase and reinstall but first I need to get an install disk for Mac OS X Tiger 10.4. and get some things off using Target Disk Mode. I do not have a FireWire cable and do not want to have to go and buy one. I have an Ethernet cable and a male - male USB cord. The two other Macs that I have are an iMac7,1 running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, and a MacBook6,1 running Mavericks 10.9.4.

MacBook Pro :: FireWire Target Disk - Computer Won't Boot - Data Specialist?
Dec 13, 2010I have a friend who's oldish-Unibody MacBook Pro started giving him the folder with question mark-flashing symbol on boot-up. I guess it could be PRAM, but in any case, he wants to get his data off the hard drive. The computer wouldn't boot up from the install disk (holding 'c' on boot), all I have managed is to put it into Target Disk Mode, with my own MPB. The funny thing is, that it works, but all that mounts on my computer is the Install Disc (in his disk drive) and his hard drive shows up in my disk utility (see below), but it will not mount, and if I try to repair it, it gives me an error and DUPLICATES the original 'root' drive. Does this mean the hard drive itself is damaged and we need to go to a 'data specialist' to get everything off or is there anything else I could try?

Mar 15, 2012Installed a new harddrive into my 2005 mac mini to replace 40 gb harddrive with hitachi 80 gb harddrive. When installing operating system from original osx two-disc set, the box which asks to choose which destination to install to is blank, and does not show any icon onto which to choose. Is this is defect in the disc? The computer recognizes that there is a new harddrive, so I know I installed it properly.

Tried to connect to my i-book in target disk mode via fire wire and the hard drive does not mount on the desktop. Can't find it in disk utilities however i get this in system profiler under firewire.

Sep 24, 2009I want to know if it is possible to go from my MacBook Pro to a firewire hard drive to a usb hard drive. I have a LaCie d2 Quadra Hard Disk (1TB) with eSATA, 2 FireWire 800 (9-pin), FireWire 400 port (6-pin), and USB ports and a 3 year old Western Digital Drive with only USB. Is there a way for me to connect them together so I am only using one port on my macbook pro?
No idea if this matters or not, but I have partitioned the LaCie drive in half for 1/2 time machine back up and 1/2 other. My Western Digital is only one partition all all three partition are in Mac OS X Journaled. A new enclosure is an option if that would make a difference and I can find out what type of drive my WD is if that would help. I have the info somewhere.
MacBook Pro :: Best FireWire Hard Drive For Booting OS Off?
Feb 22, 2010I have a powerbook which I've been told can only boot it's OS through firewire only. My question is can any of you recommend an external firewire hard drive? I'm after a 1TB of storage as anything smaller isn't ideal. I don't want to spend bucket-loads, but I know that the option of firewire costs more, so I'm prepared for that. I've been told not to buy any Western Digital drives as they don't like to be used as a booting drive (for older macs I think anyway). I also wanted to know, could I used the hard drive to boot my OS from and also use to to save additional files, or is that a disaster waiting to happen?

Apr 9, 2012I'm selling my Macbook Pro and the buyer said when formatting my harddrive, I don't need to reinstall the OS (10.6.8) because he is going to install 10.7 on it. This is good news for me because I don't have the OS installation disk anymore. I read somewhere that it could be possible to format my hard drive using another Mac (my roommate has a Macbook so that works) but I can't seem to find exact instructions.

Dec 23, 2010over the past 4 years I've had two Western Digital Mybook Hard drives. They both have died after turning 2 years old. I feel like giving another company a go even though I know lifespans aren't very long on any hard drive. I've been looking at Lacie hard drives because they support firewire 800 but they are a tad bit more expensive. I don't mind paying the extra money if I can get more than two years out of it. I am looking for a 1TB hard drive with fire wire 800 connection. I'll be using it primarily as my time machine backup but with a 1TB I may partition it as well and store some other media on there.

Hardware :: Why Does Target Disk Mode Depend On Firewire?
Oct 17, 2008...why does Target Disk Mode (let's call it TDM for short) depend on Firewire? TDM first went away with the MacBook Air, and now we've lost TDM for the latest non-pro Macbooks.
Since I don't think Apple would invite all of the subsequent grief caused by the lack of TDM if USB were an easy out for more or less the same job, what is it that I'm missing?

Aug 28, 2009I have a Macbook Pro with an inoperative slot-loading Superdrive. I purchased Snow Leopard today, planning to use my Mac Pro w/working Superdrive in Firewire Target Disk Mode to install the OS on my Macbook Pro. I can mount the Snow Leopard install via TDM, but the installer informs me that I cannot install Snow Leopard from "this volume" (presumably because the Target Disk Mode connection isn't recognized as an optical drive?). I've also tried to use "Remote Install OS X," but because my MBP is not an Air, it doesn't have the necessary firmware to select a network boot on startup by holding Option. Am I out of luck until I get access to a firewire external DVD drive?

I'm going to reformat and reinstall the iMac this weekend but need to grab all my Music/Documents (you know the drill) from it. Last time I did this, I did it over a 100mbps network, needless to say it was absolutely horribly slow. So, today I'm going to pick up a cheap-ish firewire cable and target my laptop as a disk using target disk mode.
Which type of Firewire cable do I need to buy? It's either a 4-pin or 6-pin choice, no 9-pins available at the shop I intend to visit. I have no idea what the difference is between them - hardware is definitely not my game. Both ports look like this (taken from Apple's docs, Firewire 800):

May 5, 2012I have a bit of a problem: I cant access my Mac because I lost the password. I recently changed my passwords on several macs, including an old PPC PowerMac G5 from ca 2005. I run 10.5.8 on this and it works flawlessly. I need to use this machine for important work.
So this is what I have tried so far:
1) Tested with all known passwords I have used in the past.
2) Tried to boot from a 10.6 install DVD
3) Tried to boot from just C and later Command C
4) Tried a different install DVD 10.4 (I dont have the original 10.5 DVD)
5) Tried to use T and Target Disk Mode from an iMac with Lion. (disconnected all other FW disks etc.)
6) Tried different Firewire cables
7) Tried different Firewire connections.
It starts obediently and show every sign of Mac-Happiness. But I simply can't get the darn thing to boot. I think it normally should have booted using 10.6?
IMac :: Firewire 800 Hard Drive Enclosure - Average Speed Drive
Jun 5, 2009I've been looking at a number of different Firewire 800 enclosures to use with my new Mac Mini and I have seen lots of complaints with almost all the enclosures that I have investigated, including the Newertech MiniStack v3 which I thought should be a good one. A recent enclosure I came across that I haven't seen any bad reviews about is the Icy Dock (MB559UEB-1S). I'd like to know if others are using this and what they think about it. The next question has to do with the type of hard drive to put into the enclosure. Is it worth getting a high performance drive, or will the Firewire 800 interface be the bottleneck even with an average speed drive?

Feb 15, 2012I have a MacBook Pro that used Lion. The computer's software crashed and wouldn't start up, so I took it to my local Apple repair store to get it fixed. They said they could pull all my files and data from my computer, since the hard drive was fine, and that they would reinstall it on my hard drive when they reset my computer. When I got my computer back and when through the initial set up and start up steps, I selected the option to retrieve data from a disk on my computer. My computer spent seven hours just searching for the disk, so I finally decided to ignore the data that's supposedly located somewhere on my computer, and just set the machine up again.
I set up my computer and realized that the Apple repair store reset or reinstalled Snow Leopard instead of Lion. I'm not sure how much a difference the OS makes, but now Migration Assistant can't find the other disk in my hard drive that has all my old data on it. I'm in a country that doesn't have actual Apple stores or Apple support systems in place

Oct 3, 2010I want to copy files from my old PowerBook G4 (12") to my self-built Windows PC. I've connected the PB to my tower's Firewire PCI card, put the PB in target disk mode, and Windows prompts me with the found new hardware wizard. After the wizard finished, I did not see my PB in My Computer. It does not show up in Disk Management, either. It does appear in the Safely Remove Hardware window as "UNKNOWN MODEL AND VENDOR IEEE 1394 SBP2 Device", and in the Device Manager as "SBP2 Compliant IEEE 1394 device". How can I get this to show up so I can backup my old files?

The Macbook Pro's have Firewire 800 which I think is significantly faster than USB 2.0. I also found some HD docks with firewire ports. So, what kind of speeds can I expect with firewire ports? On another note, I wish the macbook pro had an esata port!

May 21, 2010I have a few macs running Tiger and Leopard and do not have a hard drive that is filled to more than 20GB of the capacity. Looking for external hard drive solutions. I have found a couple of very good drives that only have FW 400 and USB 2.0, one in particular is a older model G-Drive 500GB for $50 that is supposed to be quite reliable. These drives are being blown out due to newer ones have esata and fw 800. Would I see a difference in speed cloning or backing up to a a fw 400 drive even if I get a newer mac that only has fw 800 ports and I use a 400-800 adaptor? The better drives are faster 7200 RM vs the slower 5400 drives, mostly portable that I have been looking at. I have been reading posts that for applications such as mine I would not see a difference. For the most part I use the computers for office related tasks including Word, Excel etc with not much else, although I have some different utility programs. I just want a bootable drive should my hard drive fail. I use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my drives. My main comp has two drives where the primary is cloned to a secondary, but want a external that I can easily plug into a new mac and clone the hard drive in that Mac to my external drive!

Jan 22, 2010I purchased a first generation 15'' MacBook Pro. My hard drive had crashed, so I backed up all my information and installed a new hard drive. Everything worked fine for about two weeks until the contact area between my power cord and the computer started to smoke. I've no longer been able to turn on my computer. I've had strange issues with my non-warrantied MacBook--including having to replace the battery four times over my three years of owning it and twice having to replace my power adapter (as it literally caught fire twice).
I've since given up on the MacBook Pro and purchased a new cheap laptop. However, I've got lots of important files on that brand new hard drive I put into my laptop. As I'm assuming the hard drive itself is still functional, I want to know how I could remove it and obtain my data. Do any of you know what sort of chassis I could purchase in order to essentially use my MacBook Pro's hard drive as an external drive to obtain these files?
