Hardware :: Time Capsule Replaced - Can't Backup / How To Ignore Old Backups On Mbp

Apr 2, 2010

My Time Capsule died due to a dead PSU, and Apple graciously replaced it with a refurb unit even though the warranty expired 12 months ago.

How do I get my MBP to ignore the old backups and do a new backup from scratch on the refurb device, which I configured with the same name and etc?

Hardware :: 27" IMac - Replaced Time Capsule Hard Drive

May 20, 2010

I have a 500GB time capsule that quickly ran out of space with my 27" iMac 1TB drive. I wanted to buy a Guardian MAXimus 1.5TB Raid-1 Hard Drive for $360 to do my backups. The cost was high and I decided to look into replacing the Time Capsule drive. I bought a 2TB Western Digital Green internal drive for $130 and replaced it using the Hardmac instructions. The 2TB Green drive runs near silent and is a lot cooler than the original 500GB drive. The swap was easy to do, but I destroyed the rubber mat glued on the bottom. I bought a Rosewill enclosure for $23 for the 500GB drive. I considered buying a FW800 enclosure, but that was $60 and it didn't seem worth it for a back up drive.

Hardware :: Two Time Capsule Backups?

Jan 8, 2009

I'm not sure why I thought of this but ... if someone were to break into my house and steal my MBP, they would probably take my Time Capsule backup as well. Now that wouldn't be good at all!!

If I set up a Time Capsule at work and a second one at home, will my MBP sync with each of them? Then I would have 2 copies of my system in 2 different locations.

Hardware :: Time Capsule Just For Backups?

Mar 3, 2008

I read the following paragraph on engadget and was slightly concerned:

[URL]

So we spent the weekend playing with Time Capsule and we've discovered some interesting answers to all your questions, as well as a few accompanying annoyances. Our main takeaway? It's a solid product, but you shouldn't expect it to do anything more than back up your files -- and Apple really needs to step up and enable general NAS support for Time Machine. Read on!

Can someone briefly explain what NAS is?

Also, this can only be used for backups? I was planning to use it as my MAIN DRIVE! Is there a problem with that? I was gonna keep all my music, photos, movies, etc. in there.

Please do advise if you are familiar with the situation!

All help is appreciated!!

Hardware :: Time Capsule Backups Keep Failing?

Jan 10, 2009

I've been using my Time Capsule for about 5 months with no major problems. Recently I've had a lot. The last few days I've been having issues with backing up. It would start up and go for a few minutes then I would get a message that the backup has failed due to network interruption. I reset everything multiple time and no luck. I now have it sitting on my desk as a extension of my 802.11g network. Periodically I notice the status light go from solid green to orange and blink for a few seconds then back to green. Would there be anything that would be causing this. I made an appointment Monday to see a Genius. I'm hoping its just a faulty unit that can be replaced.

Hardware :: Time Capsule Lost Backups?

Apr 28, 2010

I've been backing up my old MacBook Pro for over a year. I sold my computer two months ago and purchased a new Macbook Pro this week. I went to my time capsule and it's only showing a backup from June 2009 when my backups have been for all of 2009. Time Capsule is showing 250GB of space used so my backups have to be there somewhere right?

How can I access these backups?

OS X :: Logic Board Replaced - Time Machine Doesn't Recognize Old Backup?

Dec 31, 2008

Had to have the logic board in my Mac Pro replaced due to faulty audio input jack.

Time machine backs up to an external drive (DROBO array).

When I brought the machine back home, time machine does not recognize the old backup (last backup never) and doesn't have room to backup a new system because the old TM files take up most of the drivespace.

Is there a way to "force" time machine to accept an old TM backup file? I don't want to delete everything and start again. I assume this is because the logic board (motherboard) was replaced.

Note that the system drive and all internal hard drives were not modified, and the OS was not reinstalled or anything like that.

One other item: the tech forgot to run some software at apple and my machine currently has no serial number (about this mac...) assigned. They are sending out a tech to fix this - does time machine back up based on serial number?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Logic Board Replaced - Want To Inherit Time Machine Backup?

Jun 20, 2012

I had to have my logic board replaced. Now when I plug in my Time Machine external drive, I'm asked if I want to inherit the backup, which it says is from a different computer. Well....it's not. It's from this computer. So I'm not sure why it's asking this, but there are so many complaints about "inheriting" that I don't know if I want to or not. Should I just erase the back up or should I go ahead and say "Yes" to inheriting the backup?

If I click on "ignore" the first time and then move on to the second queried word "ignore" doesn't work. I have to click on "ignore all". Then the third time "ignore all" doesn't work and then I click on "ignore". So basically I have to alternate between the two options all of the time.

OS X :: Backup Data Using Time Machine / Saving Old Backups?

Oct 7, 2010

So I just successfully migrated all of my data and settings from my old iMac to my new 27 inch iMac using the Time machine backup on my Western Digital 1 TB external hard drive. Aside from the Time machine backup folder I also dragged a few other things over to the external hard drive because there was so much extra space on it. The drive is not partitioned.

So I'd like to start using Time machine with this new 27 inch iMac but the empty space that's left on the external hard drive is barely large enough to cover what I now have on the internal hard drive on my new 27 inch iMac. If I were to remove the Time machine backup from my old iMac there would be plenty of space again unless starting Time Machine on this new 27 inch iMac will just copy right over that backup file? Everything on this new iMac, the data and settings and so forth, is exactly the same. So is the user account. However the previous Mac was running Leopard while this new iMac is running Snow Leopard.

So if it doesn't copy over the old backup it will just create a new backup file? And if it does create a new backup file is there any point to keeping the old backup file since I no longer have the old iMac and wouldn't be able to access it again? Obviously if I didn't have to keep it I could erase it which would create plenty of extra space for me to start using Time machine again but with this new iMac.

OS X :: Time Machine Not Doing Backups / Unable To Complete Backup

Aug 5, 2010

I have an Imac 24" and a Mybook external HDD. Ever since Leopard came out Ive been doing backups with time machine, then ...one day..I start time machine for my weekly backup..and this message comes up: "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume."

Now I notice that my external HDD was almost not spinning while time machine was trying to backup ... the status bar of time machine saying how much files need to be copied and the total amount of space needed was super slow .... and stoped at something like maybe 10 mb ...

I started time machine again ... same message.

I though maybe Mac OSX needed some permission repaires. So I did just that and after that did time machine again ... same problem ....

Then I said to myself ... maybe my External HDD has problems ... so I even formated the HDD, then stated Time machine again ... this time it was running smoothly just like before I had the problem ... but the problem came back after 6 gig being copied out of the 25 gig needed to complete the backup process.

Now ... I hope I dont need a clean install of my Mac OSX ... or maybe its my external HDD ... maybe my USB having problems?

Is it possible to have time machine backup all information on the 500gb drive to the time capsule, so encase the external drive takes a dump, I don't loose my entire music library? Maybe time machine is already doing this, I am not sure.

OS X Mountain Lion :: Time Machine Can't Complete Backup To Time Capsule

Jun 19, 2014

MacBook Pro mid-2012, 8GB RAM, 750GB hard drive, Mac OS X 10.8.5

One Time Capsule at home

One Time Capsule in vacation home

MBP backs up everything on internal hard drive to Time Capsule at home, where we live during summer and spring. When moving to vacation home in fall and winter, MBP backs up everything to Time Capsule in vacation home.

During the 6 months at each residence, the backups work great to the Time Capsule at that particular house. However, after some time (maybe a week?), Time Machine displays an error in Notification Center: "Time Machine can't complete backup to Home Time Capsule" (when in vacation home) or "Time Machine can't complete backup to Vacation Time Capsule" (when at home).

It's obvious that this occurs because Time Machine was set to back up to 2 Time Capsules and expects both of them to be reachable. Is there a way to suppress these Time Machine errors for the time that we're away from one of the Time Capsules?

I have a 250gb external which i have been using to back up with time machine, done it several times over a few months.

Now there is like 70gb left on the external, and when i try to back up, it says failed, not enough space on external.

But i thought when there is not enough space, it simply deletes and backs over older time machine backups.

Hardware :: Time Capsule Won't Backup?

Aug 26, 2009

I previously used my TC as my main router, connected via ethernet to my iMac and also to an AEBS to give me dual zone wifi (it's a 1st gen. TC without the built-in dual zone). I recently moved and now have a home ethernet network, so I reconfigured things slightly. The AEBS is now the router, connected to a 16-port switch that feeds all the outlets around the house. The TC is connected to this, in bridge mode to expand the network, and is still connected to the iMac directly via ethernet.

Well, the bridge networking works fine, as I have internet access on the iMac and I can stream iTunes content from there to either of my Apple TVs over my ethernet network. However, Time Machine backups now "fail", and I have no idea why or what to do about it. This is especially strange as the TC and iMac are connected directly to each other, exactly as they were before I reconfigured the set-up.

OS X :: Does Time Capsule Backup Offsite

Aug 10, 2010

I have a back up external HD and a backup of my back up external, but I want one more back up just in case my house burns down or is broken into.

I know Time Capsule is wireless, but does it back up off site like how Carbonite or Mozy do? Those products don't seem to be all they are cracked up to be, and would rather give Apple my business if I can.

Is Time Capsule what I'm looking for? Does it back up to a Cloud area in cyber space that I can access anywhere ala dropbox, or is it's thing that it only transfers back up data wireless but it's still in your house.
