Hardware :: Time Capsule Or AirPort Extreme? For Storage Backups

Dec 6, 2010

I'm looking to upgrade my wireless router as well as get serious about storage backups -- curious if I should go with the Time Capsule or go with the AirPort Extreme and an external drive.

If AirPort Extreme with external hard drive, any recommendations?

MacBook :: Extending Airport Extreme From Airport Time Capsule

Sep 11, 2014

Just bought a new Airport Time Capsule 3TB for backup purposes and to use as the main router in my home (model number A1470 the latest tall one). I was originally using an AirPort Extreme (model number 1408 approx 6" square and 1' tall) for my main router.

I got the TC setup and putting out good wifi signal, but would like to take my Extreme and extend it off the TC to boost signal in other parts of my house, but having some difficulty.  I searched the forums and found setup instructions to do this, but I get a message saying, "unexpected error.  Try again."  Well, tried again and still no luck.

Hardware :: Time Machine/Time Capsule/Airport Extreme With Verizon FIOS?

Nov 10, 2009

I will be getting my new Macbook Pro in the near future and am very interested in using Time Machine to wireless back up my data to an external hard drive. I know I can use Time Capsule to do this, but also hear a mention of just getting an Airport Extreme and my own ext. hd. My question is that I have Verizon FIOS Internet and my modem also functions as a wireless router. How would the Time Capsule/Airport Extreme work with this? Is it possible? I do not believe that the Verizon router supports wireless N, and I would like to take advantage of the faster speeds. If I were to connect a Airport Extreme to the wireless router, would I then have 2 routers to choose from and just use the Airport Extreme to use the wireless N? I'm very confused as to how I could make this work.

Hardware :: Apple Time Capsule Vs. Airport Extreme?

Dec 4, 2009

My NETGEAR WNR854T died and I am looking for a replacement.

I do a lot of online gaming and HD video streaming, and have several wired and wireless devices in the home network. I also have been thinking of getting a shared backup hard drive.

I started looking at the NETGEAR WNDR3700 unit, but there are a lot of people complaining about dropped connections. So, I am now looking for an Apple Airport Extreme.

During my research, I found also the Apple Time Capsule. Is there any advantage to getting the Time Capsule? Or should the Airport Extreme be better by adding any external hard drive to the USB port?

Also, is model number MC340LL/A the correct one for the Apple Airport Extreme?

OS X :: Time Capsule / Airport Extreme External Access?

May 26, 2010

I picked up my first Mac about a 2 weeks ago and over this past weekend I picked up a new Time Capsule. Originally I bought the Time Capsule to wirelessly bridge to my Linksys router running DD-WRT (mega) but apparently the ethernet ports won't work on the Time Capsule or the Airport Extreme when connecting them to another party wireless router. So i have taken out my Linksys and am now only using the Time Capsule. The reason for the Time Capsule is to have backups on it and that for some reason I do have wireless issues with my Linksys that I am not having with the Time Capsule. Such as when I had a iPhone I would lose my wireless signle a lot and have to reboot, same with my iPad and sometimes with my Nexus One. So far none of those issues with the Time Capsule. I'm not missing much from my Linksys but one of the things I miss is being able to open up a browser from any network connection and being able to connect into my router. Is there a way with the Time Capsule / Airport Extreme to be able to access the configuration settings when not on the local network? Such a when I am at work I want to be able to access the configurations page.

Hardware :: Key Software Update For Time Capsule & AirPort Extreme?

Mar 6, 2009

Late Thursday evening, Apple released firmware updates for the 2009 Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme that resolves issues on the new devices. A parallel update also adds Back to My Mac drive sharing support to the prior generation of the wireless base stations.

The updates for both the new and previous Time Capsule and AirPort Base Station (802.11n) are all designated as firmware 7.4.1. The newest revision that had been available to previous models was 7.3.2, and the new 2009 models shipped with 7.4

The updates can be applied using AirPort Utility, typically located in the Applications/Utilities directory on systems running Mac OS X, but only after downloading the AirPort Utility 5.4.1 released this past Tuesday.

What's new in 7.4.1

A support article on Apple's site details the changes delivered by the firmware 7.4.1 update:

For AirPort Extreme (Early 2009) and Time Capsule (Early 2009) that ship with firmware 7.4, the firmware 7.4.1 update:

Resolves an issue in which a client computer may be disconnected when waking from sleepAddresses an issue in which redirecting SMTP port services may disable IP-layer networkingImproves the reliability of Back to My Mac-based disk sharingIncludes recent AirPort security updates

For AirPort Extreme with 802.11n (Fast Ethernet), AirPort Extreme with 802.11n (Gigabit Ethernet), AirPort Express with 802.11n, and original Time Capsule models, the firmware 7.4.1 update:
Enables remote administration and remote access to compatible USB connected drives via Back to My Mac (except on AirPort Express)Improves reliability when backing up to a Time Capsule via Time MachineIncludes recent AirPort security updates

Once applied, the update adds a MobileMe tap in the Advanced section of the AirPort's configuration (pictured below). After entering an account and password, the base station will need to be restarted.

Also included in the update are a trio of security updates outlined here, mostly pertaining to enhancements to the base station's IPv6 stack.

As was noted by AppleInsider in a previous article, the 7.4.1 firmware update adds the ability to access drives attached to 802.11n AirPort Extremes and Time Capsules over MobileMe, but does not deliver the guest networking and simultanious dual-band features of the just-released models because those features require hardware support.

Hardware :: Airport Extreme / Time Capsule Built In Modem?

Sep 27, 2010

i know Internet Service Providers give away modem or routers these day but wouldn't be best if Apple made an Airport Extreme or Time Capsule with a built-in modems? if you check people questions on apple.com you will see have half of them want to know how to switch off the wireless connection on their Linksys and let Airport Extreme do that and the other half doesn't even know what Airport Extreme is for i know Apple has a habit of getting rid of stuff but anyone else agree this will drive Airport Extreme sales up? it would be the ultimate connection device for macs and no need for additional router.

Hardware :: Way To Switch Off Airport Extreme Or Time Capsule Wifi?

Nov 26, 2010

Is there a way, in the settings, to turn off the Time Capsule's Airport wifi? I've been looking at the "Apple Airport Networks" and the "Designing Airport Networks" manuals and haven't found an On/Off setting similar to the MBP's Airport On/Off. I live in a high-rise, with a lot of wifi networks, and would like to configure the Time Capsule via wired LAN with wifi off, until it is secured with WPA2 encryption, and MAC address filtering. Also, I will probably be using the gigabit LAN connection most of the time, when at my desk.

Hardware :: Network Setup - Time Capsule Or Airport Extreme

Mar 5, 2009

To date I've used an airport express as a wireless router for my macbook and macbook pro. Both have been manually backed up routinely on external hard drives. I use the macbook as my main media center/media storage and the hard drive is starting is nearly full. I'd like to set up a system where I move my media to an external hard drive and also automate the backup of the mb, mbp, and external hard drive. Would time capsule be the best approach for this and will it backup an external hard drive tied to its usb port. Alternatively, could I tie 2 external hard drives through a usb hub into airport extreme, using one for backing up the laptops and the other external drive?

Hardware :: Time Capsule Versus Airport Extreme Dual Band Base/ext

Jul 4, 2009

I just bought a new Time Capsule and an Airport Extreme. Both are the newfangled dual-band type. At the moment the AEX is the main base station, connected to my DSL modem in the Living Room. The TC extends the AEX network and is in my office.

The instructions suggest the TC should not be a network client and rather be the main base station, and to make the AEX extend the network. How much difference will there be in Time Machine performance between the two topologies?

I would really prefer having the TC in my office, so I can attach via gigabit ethernet to the TC when I'm working there with my MBP. I cannot move the DSL modem to my office since I don't have a phone line there (it's really an upstairs bedroom).

Hardware :: Time Capsule Just For Backups?

Mar 3, 2008

I read the following paragraph on engadget and was slightly concerned:

[URL]

So we spent the weekend playing with Time Capsule and we've discovered some interesting answers to all your questions, as well as a few accompanying annoyances. Our main takeaway? It's a solid product, but you shouldn't expect it to do anything more than back up your files -- and Apple really needs to step up and enable general NAS support for Time Machine. Read on!

Can someone briefly explain what NAS is?

Also, this can only be used for backups? I was planning to use it as my MAIN DRIVE! Is there a problem with that? I was gonna keep all my music, photos, movies, etc. in there.

Please do advise if you are familiar with the situation!

All help is appreciated!!

Hardware :: Time Capsule Backups Keep Failing?

Jan 10, 2009

I've been using my Time Capsule for about 5 months with no major problems. Recently I've had a lot. The last few days I've been having issues with backing up. It would start up and go for a few minutes then I would get a message that the backup has failed due to network interruption. I reset everything multiple time and no luck. I now have it sitting on my desk as a extension of my 802.11g network. Periodically I notice the status light go from solid green to orange and blink for a few seconds then back to green. Would there be anything that would be causing this. I made an appointment Monday to see a Genius. I'm hoping its just a faulty unit that can be replaced.

Hardware :: Time Capsule Setup (Using For Storage And Backup)

Jan 18, 2009

I got the iMac Wednesday and have been setting it up all week/weekend. I finally down to the end of getting time capsule setup. Here's what I'd like to have:
Internal iMac HD: 500gb
time capsule HD: 1tb (750gb backup, 250gb usable space)

Right now I've got it set up and I'm about to pick the drive in time machine, but it looks like as soon as I do that it's going to just start backing up my internal HD to the time capsule's HD? Will I later be able to set aside 250gb of time capsule space to use as storage? Do I need to set up something before I backup to it? Is this even possible, or is this what everyone is talking about when they say time capsule can't be used as a NAS?

Hardware :: Can All Windows PCs Use Time Capsule As A External Storage?

Mar 20, 2009

Hope this thread will benefit those who are considering to buy Time Capsule or already a have one.

I'm considering to get Time Capsule for my home network which consist of:

- One MBP (15" Unibody)

- Two Windows XP desptops (connected via Ethernet cable)

- One Windows Vista laptop

Could any Mac users help answer my queries below:

1) Since I'm going to use Time Capsule as backup storage for Time Machine. Can I still manually copy files into its HDD and share those files with other network users?

2) Can all Windows PCs use Time Capsule as a external storage for storing and sharing files even after Time Machine has "marked" it as a backup storage for my MBP?

3) I presume the HDD in Time Capsule is formatted using HFS+. In this situation, do Windows users need to install special software to access the HDD in Time Capsule?
