Hardware :: Mybook Studio Keeps Skipping When Playing Files?

May 24, 2009

I just received a WD Mybook Studio 1TB to be used with my new iMac. Only one big problem, whether the hard drive is connected to usb or firewire 800, it will skip when playing any file like a movie or music. I ended up downloading and installing the newest firmware and formatting the hard drive. But still, even now it keeps skipping.

Disk Utility shows, after verifying, the hard drive is ok. No need to repair anyways. Is there any other way to be sure the hard drive itself is broken?

OS X :: Adding New Mybook Studio 2TB For Time Machine?

Apr 7, 2009

I have just had a catastrophic failure of a Maxtor basic 1.5TB USB HD as a TimeMachine backup. I was being cheap as the HD I really want is a 2TB MYbook Studio edition.

I have an iMac 24" with a mybook studio 1TB as my iTunes and Movies drive. It is in the 800 firewire socket. If I buy a 2TB I am left with 400 Firewire or USB.

My question is, can I add the 2TB to the firewire socket on the back of my 1TB mybook?

Or am I best to put it direct into the machine (iMac)

Hardware :: WD MyBook Studio Edition 2 TB - RAID1, Multiple Partitions?

Apr 16, 2009

I am looking at the WD MyBook Studio Edition II 2 TB and have some questions I need answered before getting it. Perhaps someone who uses it with their mac knows the answers.I want to use it with the RAID1 configuration. As I understand it it will then be seen as a 1 TB drive to the operating system, and the 1 TB data will be mirrored on the dual 1 TB drives.1) Can the 1 TB RAID1 drive be partitioned into multiple logical partitions?2) Can the 1 TB RAID1 drive be formatted as NTFS?3) Can the 1 TB RAID1 drive be partitioned into multiple logical partitions formatted with different file systems?

Hardware :: Western Digital MyBook Studio Edition 1TB Reads Then Slows Down

May 15, 2010

I have a WD MyBook Studio Edition 1TB that's been OK for about a year, but recently it's been acting weird so I ordered an advance replacement from WD and am in the process of transferring all my stuff to the replacement drive. The old drive will read and write fine for a few seconds, then it just slows way down. For example, I am copying files over right now, and it just blazed through about 500 MB in a few seconds, and it's taken it about 15 minutes to get to 550 MB. Obviously something is wrong, but I'm looking for any advice on how to keep this thing alive or speed it up for just a few minutes while I get everything off of it.

OS X :: Files Skipping Trash And Deleting Immediately?

Jan 14, 2010

my files have started skipping the trash bin and directly deleting themselves when I drag one to the trash. Whether I hit delete, drag into an open trash window, or just drag to the trash icon, the file doesn't go into the trash, but rather deletes right away, with the standard "Are you sure you want to delete 'x'?" As if I was emptying the trash bin.

ITunes For Mac :: Video Files Skipping Frames - RAM Not The Reason

Sep 6, 2014

MacBook Pro
13-inch, Mid 2009
Processor  2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
Software  OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
itunes version 11.3
160gb rotational hard drive w 75 GB free space

my problem is that tv shows and movies downloaded from the iTunes store skips frames (stutters, pauses call it what you will) every 5 or 10 seconds while playing. The sound continues but the video stutters. The problem appears after watching for about 5 minutes, its fine until then, sometimes it gets a bit better but it never goes away. The movies are not HD, they're standard definition files.

I've tried many different movies and tv shows purchased from the iTunes store and its always the same.It happens in full screen and half size. It happens when i open the files in quicktime player as well. I have no other applications running while the problem happens. It does NOT happen when I put the files onto my girlfriend's iPad, they playback no problem.

This problem did not happen when I first purchased the laptop, it has only appeared in recent months. At first I thought it was a RAM issue as I only had 2gb of RAM so I upgraded to 8gb and while my computer is much faster in general the problem has not gone away at all, it's exactly the same. Then I thought it was because my hard drive was full, (which it was) so I cleared some space and now have 75gb free on a 160gb drive. Still skipping frames.  It does not happen when I play video files not purchased from iTunes store in quicktime.

OS X Mavericks :: How To Edit Canon C300 MXF Files With Final Cut Pro 7 (Studio)

Jun 2, 2014

I recently shot some footage on a Canon C300 and would like to edit it on FCP 7, problem is it seems since my computer did the upgrade to mavericks I can no longer find the appropriate driver on the Canon site as Mavericks is not supported by Canon for this particular update.

After researching I found that mxf files can be transcoded in log and capture but you need the appropriate driver installed. I have looked into third party applications but none of them seem entirely trust worthy and some cost money, which I don't believe I should pay considering I bought a legit copy of FCP at great expense and Apple seems to have forgotten all about it now FCX has been out for a while.

Final Cut Studio :: Why Can't Save The Folder Locations Set For Render Files

Aug 22, 2014

I wrongly assumed that when you go to system settings to select the scratch disks (root folder where all the audio and video render folders and files go, capture files, etc.) that Final Cut would save the folder locations within the FC project you are working in. Makes total sense, but for reasons I don't understand, FC does NOT save these folder locations and the result is that I have render files scattered all over the place on my hard drive and it is quite a mess! Fortunately, the project file remembers where it put the render files, so as long as you don't remove or rename any project folders, everything shows up rendered on the time line as it should. The problem is, if I'm working on several projects at once, I have to reset the scratch disks every time I reopen a project, otherwise the program will save it to the last scratch location selected and put all of the render files in another project's folder. I often forget to reset the scratch disks when I'm busy and now I have render files mixed up in various project folders.

Why can't you just set the scratch disks one time when you first set up the project and have the project always remember that location, instead of always having to reset them every time you reopen a project. I love Final Cut, but this is a product defect that should be addressed and corrected. If the project file can remember where it is putting all the render files, it should also be capable of remembering the scratch disk locations you originally selected when you first set up the project or better yet, save it to the project's root folder by default.

When trying to learn how to play these files, a google search led me to another thread on this forum written by someone with the same problem. Another user suggest MacHacha as a decompression tool. I tried this, and it appears to have successfully decompressed the files into a basic .wmv file, however I am still unable to play the file.

When I try to open it, quicktime says it is not a movie file. I installed the newest version of flip4mac, and still get the same result. VLCPlayer and RealPlayer also give me similar notifications.

As far as I know, the only software to decode Real Media File is RealPlayer, and RealPlayer do not support MKV files. So ...!!

Applications :: Playing VOB Files On Mac Mini

Jan 6, 2010

I just purchased a Mac Mini and was hoping to play VOB files (which I ripped on a Linux machine, not the Mac Mini) with the native DVD Player application. However, when I try to open the files, which have names like title1.vob, title2.vob, etc, the names are grey-ed out in the file selector window. I can't select those files, and therefore I can't play them. Am I doing something wrong? Can I play VOB files with DVD Player? If not, is there another way to play VOB files on a Mac Mini? I have an LCD TV connected to the mini-DVD port on the Mac Mini, and I'd like to be able to play the files to the TV screen, and also, use the Mac Remote to control Fast Forward, Rewind, File Select, etc.

ITunes :: Lag When Playing Audio Files From NAS?

Mar 12, 2012

Setup : Itunes 9.0.2 on a Macbook 5,2 running OSX.5.8. Audio Files on NAS (brought there using "consolidate library" in itunes), libraries still on main drive. I created a NAS account with the same ID as my admin one, and connect to it with a script executed on startup. I can do exactly the same things as when audio files were on my drive. The only problem is lag, when I play next track, edit metadata,...I checked wifi, ethernet, different cables,... didn't change a thing. Moreover, I can browse through all my tracks with VLC without lag. Last evening I ran idefrag for a totally different purpose and found 'itunes music library.xml" was fragmented (≈20 MB in 7 parts), "Itunes Library" too.

Here's the thing :When I defragment these two files at startup, and then launch iTunes, the lag issue disappears. When I quit iTunes, the library files are saved but written in parts again, and the lag comes back. Finally, if I defragment the files between a quit and a start, they must be edited again because they're split up again and the lag is still there.Since I didn't add new songs, itunes must be saving stuff like playing counts, which is useless to me. Make the library read-only?

ITunes :: Video Files Not Playing?

If I download them to my MacBook then access them through the shared media, they will play and become part of the library on the iMac. Seems like a lot of bother just to watch a video.

Anyone have a clue about what's going on?

MacBook Pro :: Playing MKV Files - Loud Fan Noise

But in both every time I play a Mkv file the fans start spinning, I think it's the fans or maybe the hard drive. But it's quite a loud whoosh all throughout the movie. Is this normal or playing a mkv file shouldn't make any noise at all? Should it use a lot of CPU? I'm using Leopard latest version.
