Hardware :: Mac Won't Appear On My Tv / Make It Possible?
Mar 1, 2009
I have purchased a mini-dvi to dvi cable and then a dvi to vga cable to connect my macbook to my tv. I've plugged it all in and it wont appear on the tv? It keeps saying no signal. I tried this on my 40" Sony Bravia TV and it didn't work so I switched to HDMI but I bought it to use on my 16" tele I have at uni. It had a VGA and Scart but no HDMI so is there a shortcut I need to press on the keyboard to send the image on my laptop to the tv screen?
I would really like to take some of those funny little .flv [or similar] that we all get in email and some utube or dailymotion etc 'movies' and put them on a dvd that can play on the home TV for the delight of all. Would the resolution be any good? It would be nice to have autoplay, a choose from the file menu and if they could be moderated to have the same basic sound output. What is the best way/program to do this on a MAC.
anybody know of a way to make your Mac snappy again, as if just brand new?I remember that even if i migrate all my apps/ files to a brandnew Mac it's always so snappy but after a while it just takes forever to load things on startup and to launch applications.I tried OnyX and quick defragmentation with iDefrag but none of these helped really.Does anybody know of a tool that really optimizes Snow Leopard as if brand new?
But i do not want to connect with USB or Fire wire, I would prefer to do it wireless with a NAS drive is this possible. I do not want to have to connect more wires all the time. I would like it to automatically back uo with time machine when i am at the office.
I'm aware that there are extensions for Quicklook and have a few installed, but they're not so useful to me because the default apps have their own icons that are being used instead of live icons. Is there any way to suppress this behavior so I can view things like my ASP or shell scripts instead of a useless doc icon from Adobe (or textmate, etc)?
I have been using iMovie 09 and iDVD to make DVDs but I'm really disappointed with the quality. I use a Samsung HD camera called Samsung H104 (in europe) and it records in full HD 1920 x 1080. What way is best to get good quality on a DVD? I have a fairly new MacBook Air (from sept) but I usually use my iMac (from 2008) to import and burn the DVDs. The quality I get is really poor and everyone end up look quite overweight because of the widescreen.
I purchased win7 from win741. 1) Is the purchased download a full version or upgrade only version?2) How do I make the downloaded iso into a bootable dvd (i.e. retail dvd)?3) Which program should I burn it with (besides Toast)?
I was trying to replace an icon on a classic app, so that it wouldn't look so ugly in the dock. I made a picture that had some transparency in it. I tried copy and pasting from both a .psd and a TIFF into the info window. It almost worked. The app now has a 128x128 icon, but the trasparency was replaced by white. Is there any way to get the icon to retain the transparency? Alternately, does anyone have an OSX icon for Dreamweaver and/or Flash?
I would like to make my usb memory bootable. Is it any way to get the drive to show up in startup items in sys.prefs? I have tried with fdisk, hdiutil and diskutil but have not been able to select my drive. I thought it was going to happen with fdisk. Typing fdisk /dev/disk1 gives me this.
I used to make compilation tapes with my favorite songs from CDs to play. I'd like to do the same for songs from my music DVDs. However, hours of messing around hasn't got me very far. Anyone know of an easy solution. With CD's I just copied the aiff files into a folder and imported them into Toast and that was it. Extracting files from DVDs isn't so clear cut.
So I got an SSD for my Mac Pro and it has been good so far. I was using Photoshop to make some changes on a panorama, its a .psb that is over 17 GB. I have set up Photoshop so that my scratch disks are all 4 mechanical drives, and I unchecked the SSD as a scratch disk.
I tried using content aware fill on a part of the image and left for a while. When I got back on, it said Photoshop encountered a problem because the scratch disk was full.
I have 4 2TB drives set up as scratch disks and it looks like Photoshop only used my SSD, which was never checked as active! I had 80GB available on the SSD and it got filled up.
I did work out that one reason I don't get anywhere close to the so called 8-9 h battery life on my i5 MBP is that I use Opera as my Browser. Even though I force the Intel GPU it seems with Safari the battery estimate looks a lot better (still only at minimum Brightness it reaches 8-9h and never on 50% birghtness as Apple says).
But since I only use the Touchpad and not a mouse to control the Browser I thought that the more important stuff Safari should be able to do too at least as a mobile browser.
I put some gestures in BetterTouchTool (same as for Opera). (i.e. single tiptap for back and forward, twofinger tiptab to switch tabs, threefingerswipe up/down to open and close tabs, in short I imitate the mouse gestures I am used to.
a. What is the best way to port my bookmarks? And (optional) is there any reasonable way for syncing? I use Opera Link for all my different PCs, OSs and it works brilliantly because all I have to do after a reinstall is typ in name and password and everything is setup in seconds. I never used mobile me and do not really intend to do so, as it costs and I don't benefit from any family license, and I don't feel the need for any other mobile me feature. It is simply a little overpriced for simple syncronisation.
b. How do I change(not add) short cuts? I found a page for all the safari short cuts and there are many of them. I don't really like some of them though. One of the reasons I think Opera is superior to most other browser are the single key short cuts. They are off by default because they would most likely confuse anybody who doesn't know about them but they make everything more efficient.
The most important being all though it is a default setting and not really a single key short cut is the . instead of CMD+F and Enter instead of CMD+J. And I'd like some single key for CMD+G. I don't know how to change it in Safari and if I change it globally somehow it probably wouldn't work, because it is important for this kind of shortcuts to differntiate between a I am just writing something state and the I am not typing anything but want to control the browser state. It is my understanding only the browser can really do that.
The reason is simple and being that it works so much faster. In Opera with mouse gestures you can do almost anything with the mouse and never have to lift a finger to get most things done where Safari often needs a cmd+click or whatever. And you can navigate expecially big sites faster than they are loaded only by keyboard. Press "." some String and Enter to get to a certain menu item and klick it. CMD+F a String CMD+J is as weird as it may sound to some, just worlds slower. It gets even worse if you only have one hand free to do the same task.
I truly never really understood this whole speed thing with browser because loading speed is rarely an issue if you have a fast connection. IMO it is all about the time you need to get to where you want to be.
c. code/abreviation/shortcuts for search engines? That should be fairly easy because you can easily teach it to Firefox, but I don't know how. In Opera again only stupid people use this search box. The one you click and select a search engine and than typ something and press enter. Most people just use a short cut for the search engine and typ in the normal address bar. Like you typ "maps London" and it opens google maps and zooms to London. The same works for pretty much anything and is brilliant because you can search in the german and english wikipedia by only slightly different short cuts. It is slow to first having to use the mouse to select the search engine, then go back to the keyboard and typ something. Who does that? In fact with out this search box nonsense you get a real simple gui. I have the fit to width button and the address field and thats all you really need in Opera.
In FF you can go to manage your searches and put codes in and works the same as in Opera. It is more difficult to set up but it works. I guess in Safari it should work too and Safari would give me about an extra hour of battery life or more as the estimate is telling me when I CMD+Q Opera. No Idea what Opera is doing when it ain't doing anything.
Sorry for this silly question, bit I read a lot of threads where the point is to clone a HD to one another. When doing so, with the applications installed, does it mean that the copy is fully functional, applications are copied and run despite protection codes, etc.. ?? It means that everyone can clone its applications on someone else HD and up and running ?
I need to make a slideshow with a ton of impact, I have about 80 images and and what we have now is very basic, check it out .its way too slow for the amount of pictures takes an eternity to get through. We found this slideshow on the net.its very effective and you can see our pictures in a minimal amount of time. Only problem is i have no idea how to replicate this effect, I was thinking maybe premier pro but have had a look and cant get anywhere close to it.
I was wondering if anyone knew how to make the toolbar at the top transparent without any third party apps? My friend macbook pro's tookbar is transparent by default.
I recently acquired 2 PowerMacs 1 for free and the other for cheap. One is a Dual 450mhz and the other is a Dual 500mhz. So now I have 2 dual 450mhz and a dual 500mhz. Is it possible to make a three g4 baby cluster similar to what they did with the giant G5 cluster at Virginia Tech?
How would I do it? Would it harness the power of all of the processors? Would it only be useful only for large computations, or would it speed up any and all tasks and apps?
I am just a designer, and think it would be a fun thing to try to do. I have visions of making some sort of antiquated giant beast of a mac. At the very least I figure I could use the three of them together as a heater in the winter!
I have an old G4 and its memory is to the max 1G. I'd like to know what you would reccomed to make it work faster. I've heard that an accelator for the processor is an alternative. Is it really worth it, and does it really work that good? I work with Photoshop all day long and handle very large files.
I finally bought my Mac Pro last week, and needless to say it continues to impress me. I was transferring some files from my 1tb Seagate 7200.11 to my boot drive consisting of two 74gb Raptors in software raid 0. Since i've had it, the 4gb files have always transferred at about 60mb/s, but tonight the speed somehow managed to double to a maximum of 127mb/s (and a sustained 100mb/s). Why would the transfer rate double in speed?
