Hardware :: Mac Marketshare Grows In Europe As Apple's Competitors Struggle

Nov 11, 2009

PC sales in the U.K. and Western Europe diminished over the past year while Apple's market share has grown, as higher-priced Macs have found success in the midst of down economy.New European sales figures for the third financial quarter of 2009 were released by research firm Gartner Wednesday, and overall U.K. PC shipments were down 2.4 percent. The data showed Apple's market share of PC sales in the U.K. increased from 3.8 percent in 3Q 2008 to 5 percent in 3Q 2009. In the three-month frame, Apple shipped 165,000 Macs, good for 26.6 percent growth from last year."Apple leveraged the 'halo' effect of the Apple brand created by the iPods and iPhones into the PC arena, dominating the mid to higher price brackets," Gartner said.Apple made its debut in the U.K. top 5 in the first quarter of 2009. For that frame, the Mac maker had a 4.8 percent market share.

The only manufacturer to exceed Apple's growth in the U.K. was the top-selling Acer, which saw 35.5 percent growth based on the strength of its low-cost netbook sales. Acer shipped 798,000 PCs during the frame, good for a 24.2 percent market share.Industry veterans Dell and Hewlett-Packard saw decreases of more than 10 percent year-over-year as they came in second and third place, respectively. Toshiba, with a massive 26.1 percent decline from 2008, took fourth place. Just behind Apple in sixth place in the U.K is Samsung, with a 4.8 percent market share for the quarter. It's the same story in Western Europe, where overall shipments declined 0.3 percent for the quarter, but Gartner said the "biggest winners" were Apple, Samsung and Acer. Though Apple and Samsung did not crack the top five and specific numbers were not available, Acer managed a 28.3 percent market share in Western Europe during the third quarter. The company saw 21.3 percent year-over-year growth.

Good news for the rest of the European PC markets in France and Germany, where year-over-year sales returned to growth. France's PC industry increased 1.9 percent in the third quarter, while shipments in Germany grew 3.7 percent. Acer was again the top manufacturer in both territories, commanding more than a quarter of the market in each. Apple did not crack the top five in either nation. In October, domestic Mac shipments grew 11.8 percent year-over-year, giving Apple an estimated 9.4 percent of the U.S. PC market. For the frame, Apple was the fourth-largest PC maker in the nation.[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ]

Applications :: Choosing A Version Of Excel, Powerpoint, Or Competitors?

Apr 12, 2009

I used to be a big fan of Microsoft Excel and Powerpoint, but I was using an old version of Office on a PC. Now I have migrated to Mac and gotten Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac, and the new versions of Powerpoint and Excel are completely awful. What is causing all these problems? When were these problems introduced - 2008, 2004, or earlier? Are the Mac versions of Office simply worse than the PC versions? And most importantly: What version should I downgrade to? Should I be running Office in Windows under Fusion? Or should I ditch Microsoft entirely (which I would truly love to do) and start using some competing product for my slideshow and spreadsheet needs? Here are the problems I am having with the new versions, from most obnoxious to only moderately obnoxious:Excel:1. There is absolutely no way to make error bars derive their height from a column of data. Error bars must be a fixed size or a fixed percentage. This means it is totally impossible to do error bars that indicate the standard deviation, interquartile range, or 95% confidence interval. This feature was present in the old version of Excel, they simply removed it. Was Microsoft intentionally trying to make this software useless to scientists?

2. There is no way to select one column and call it the x-values and another column and call it the y-values (when making a chart). You have to select two columns at once, and Excel will guess which is which. And they better be neighboring columns, too.3. The chart options and formats menus/dialog boxes are completely different than they used to be, and much more restrictive. I can't find the tab where you enter the chart title, the axis titles, and check a box for whether you want a legend or not.4. All the charts are really incredibly ugly. They are full of shadows, bubbles, rounded edges, bevels, and bright colors. There is no way to make plain graphs.5. I can't get the page-break preview dotted lines to disappear. They are distracting, I don't want to see them.Powerpoint:1. Everything in Powerpoint is now hideously ugly, and you can't make it simple. The problems are similar to the aesthetic problems in Excel, but fifty times worse.Every table, every arrow, and every autoshape is now 3D, puffy, brightly colored, rounded on the edges, and has shadows and reflections of light on its metallic textured surface. You cannot make a normal black arrow, or a normal table made of straight, rectangular, black lines. You cannot make a plain red hexagon, it will look bubbly and metallic. I'm sure the people at Microsoft thought that simple things looked archaic and unsophisticated, but they completely failed to realize that you need to keep the simple option available. The new aesthetic that they impose on all Powerpoints looks completely childish, unprofessional, and silly.

2. When I open an old presentation (saved long ago with my PC), Powerpoint modifies the original file without warning, without asking, and there is no way to override it. I have to carefully make a copy of every .ppt presentation before I double click on it, because double clicking and letting Powerpoint do its horrific dark magic will irreparably change the file. That is not okay. On multiple occasions, I have had to use Time Machine to restore .ppt files that I accidentally opened without copying and Powerpoint then mangled. It changes the slide layouts so that arrows don't line up, pictures overflow the slide, tables turn ugly and colorful, fonts change size, and so on.

Both/All Office for Mac applications:1. Expose and Spaces do not work, there are lots of annoying bugs with window management in these programs.I have found a few things that I like, but I will gladly give them up for a good downgrade that addresses these problems:1. Powerpoint can now export as images really easily.2. Excel gives the syntax of every function in a pop-up box every time you type it. That is helpful. That's it. Good work, Microsoft. Your new versions created 8 big new problems that weren't present in the old versions, and you added 2 tiny features which I slightly appreciate. Please help. Advise. Suggest. What is the last version before these problems? Is there some way that I am not seeing to enter x- and y-data in Excel, or make things non-ugly in both?

Hardware :: Aluminum Apple Remote Does Not Have An Apple Logo?

Jan 8, 2010

I know this is kind of off topic and the logo does not make the product any different but I found it a little odd that Apple decided to not to put their logo on the remote. It's made out of aluminum and has enough space on the back for a logo to be present. Apple put's their logo on everything that has enough space for one. The old remote had it, mouse, keyboard, MacBook/MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro, iPod's, iPhone, docks, and gift cards all have it. Their earphones don't have it because they are to small to put a logo without making them look stupid. I wonder what Jonathan Ive and Jobs were thinking when they decided to not put the logo. The back of the remote almost seems bare without it.

Hardware :: Apple Wireless Keyboard Vs. Apple Wireless Pro Keyboard?

Aug 19, 2010

I was just wondering what all of your thoughts were regarding these two keyboards. I know I can't get the Wireless Pro new anymore, however I can get it used for $20 from someone I know.

The new aluminum one however, I can get for about $40 used or just buy a new one for $70. I'm looking to buy a used one so it's pretty much the Wireless Pro for $20 vs the Wireless Aluminum for $40.

This will be going towards a set-up with my MBP which will be on an mstand, with an external monitor. I've already gotten the Magic Mouse so I'm trying to find a nice Bluetooth keyboard to compliment it.

MacBook Pro :: What Oem HDD(s) Does Apple Use In It

The problem is that this case only provides 2A and the word is that 'some' HDDs need more juice than that to spin up. So, the question is, how can I find out what the BTO HDD in the MBP will be and will its specs be consistent with what the Aluratek offers it?

OS X :: Windows 7 Narrows The Gap With Apple's Mac OS X

Oct 8, 2009

Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal has given Microsoft's Windows 7 a glowing review, noting that Microsoft's latest operating system is still behind Apple's Mac OS X, but not by much.

A known Apple advocate, Mossberg's positive take on Windows 7 is a big change from Windows XP and Vista, both of which the columnist felt were vastly inferior to Mac OS X.

"In recent years, I, like many other reviewers, have argued that Apple’s Mac OS X operating system is much better than Windows," he said. "That’s no longer true. I still give the Mac OS a slight edge because it has a much easier and cheaper upgrade path; more built-in software programs; and far less vulnerability to viruses and other malicious software, which are overwhelmingly built to run on Windows."

He continued: "Now, however, it’s much more of a toss-up between the two rivals. Windows 7 beats the Mac OS in some areas, such as better previews and navigation right from the taskbar, easier organization of open windows on the desktop and touch-screen capabilities. So Apple will have to scramble now that the gift of a flawed Vista has been replaced with a reliable, elegant version of Windows."

Windows 7 is set to debut on Oct. 22. A Home Premium upgrade will cost $120 ($200 standalone); Professional upgrade will cost $200 ($300 standalone); and Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade will run $220 ($320 standalone).

It's launch follows the debut of Apple's latest operating system, which was released at the end of August. Mossberg said both offerings from the rival companies are more evolutionary than revolutionary.

In his August review of Snow Leopard, Apple's latest operating system upgrade, Mossberg said the upgrade is a decent improvement, but not a "must-have upgrade." He said the $29 product is priced accordingly, because Mac OS X 10.6 is not a "typical Apple lust-provoking product."

In the Windows 7 review, Mossberg drew many parallels between Windows 7 and Snow Leopard. He said the new taskbar is similar to the Mac OS X dock, but improves on the concept in some ways -- namely Aero Peek, which he said is "more natural and versatile" than Snow Leopard's Dock Expose. The Aero Peek feature allows users to mouse over an open window in the preview screen, which makes all other windows on the desktop transparent.

He also praised the new OS for being faster than Windows Vista, nagging users for security concerns less than its predecessor, and offering a wide range of software compatibility.

But there are a few key areas where Windows 7 falls behind Snow Leopard, Mossberg said. For one, Microsoft's OS "still isn't quite as natural" as it is on Mac, though it's an improvement from Vista.

And though Windows 7 is faster, his MacBook Pro still started and restarted faster than most of the PCs he tested. "But the speed gap has narrowed considerably," he said.[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ]

OS X :: Apple Usability Flaw

Sep 9, 2010

I recently accidentally clicked the "minus" button on the "Login Items" screen under preferences, and even though I realized the mistake instantly, I had no way of getting the deleted line back. What make it worse, is that I have no idea what the line was that I deleted. "Undo" obviously didn't work, and because OS X applies changes as you make them, I couldn't simply hit "Cancel" like you can in Windows. This made me realize that Apple design approach to such dialogs, and the decision to apply changes as you go without providing OK or Cancel buttons is a fairly significant usability flaw. It's ironic that they go to extreme safety measures when it comes to file deletions in Finder (requiring a key combination; plus it goes to trash anyway after that), yes it many other areas of the operating system, they've made it way too easy to accidentally delete something.

I'm just wondering if anyone has had the same thought? I pretty much bought my Mac solely for the supposed better use experience, but Apple have me doubting that the user interface is really that much better than Windows (specially now that Windows 7's taken advantage of a lot of OS X features).
