Hardware :: Life Of An Apple Display - Colour Fades

Dec 28, 2008

I am wondering how long do Apple Displays can last for?

I am thinking of buying a 20" Apple Display that is 4 Years old for the price of $270. However, I am concerned with the color fades or if the ACD might break within the next year.

Also, do YOU think Apple will update the Cinema displays at Macworld (and that I should wait) or even provide an adapter to work with old Macbook Pros and other Macs?

Software :: A Grey Screen Fades Into White And The Apple Logo Never Appears?

Nov 23, 2008

I have had my MacBook for almost two years and the battery had just died on me. So I sent it back to Apple and got a new one. But ever since switching over to this new battery, my computer has had issues starting up. A grey screen fades into white and the Apple logo never appears. The computer will just stay like that for hours. A friend suggested turning the power off and back on, holding apple+ctrl+P+R, which worked. However, the next time I turned my computer on, the screen stayed white again, without an Apple logo. Can you tell me what the deal is? Should I bother reporting this to Apple? Is this permanent damage I'm going to have to go thru everytime I start me laptop?

Power Mac :: Colour On Screen Changed To An Orange Distorted Colour

Apr 8, 2012

New to using Mac's... this is an older desktop but I haven't had any issues with it yet. I went on to use it and the colour was a yellow/orange looking colour and it changes the way pictures and text look on the computer. Is there a way I can troubleshoot this problem or is it something to do with the monitor itself?

Hardware :: Dropping Adobe Flash Boosts Apple's MacBook Air Battery Life By 2 Hours

Nov 4, 2010

Apple has stopped bundling Adobe Flash on new Macs, ostensibly so users could obtain the latest, secure version themselves, but vastly increased battery life seems to be another leading reason.

According to testing performed by Chris Foresman of Ars Technica, the new MacBook Air can last for a full six hours after loading a series of webpages in Safari, but its battery performance drops down to four hours once Adobe Flash is installed and the same sites are loaded.

"Flash-based ads kept the CPU running far more than seemed necessary," Foresman wrote. Without the Flash plugin installed, websites typically display static ads in place of Flash content, erasing the need for constant processing power demanded by the Flash plugin's rendering engine.

With Flash ads consuming as much as 33 percent of the MacBook Air's battery potential, it's no wonder why Apple has demonstrated no interest in getting a version of Flash installed on its iPad, iPod touch and iPhone, all of which have much smaller batteries.

This summer, Adobe launched a public relations attack on Apple for failing to support Flash on its iOS devices, nor allowing Adobe to deliver a version of Flash for the iOS platform, nor approving apps for the iOS that were created in Adobe's Flash Professional application. Apple has backed away from refusing to approve apps created with third party tools, but has shown no interest in getting Flash content to run on its iOS.

When asked for "any updates" on the company's stance on Flash during its quarterly earnings report, chief executive Steve Jobs quipped, "flash memory? We love flash memory," before taking the next question.

Apple's removal of Adobe's Flash plugin from a default install on the new MacBook Air coincided with the company's debut of a more conservative new "wireless productivity test" it said was more in line with actual use, and better standardized for accurate comparisons between models. Being able to test the new machine without its battery being taxed by Flash ads certainly helps the company achieve better results.

The Shrinking Flash Platform

Microsoft stopped bundling Adobe Flash with the release of Windows Vista in 2007, although its motivation was likely due to the company's efforts to push its rival Silverlight plugin. However, Windows implements Flash as an ActiveX control, which means users can click on Flash placeholders within a webpage and the Flash plugin will install itself. New Mac users will have to manually download and install Flash from Adobe in order to make it available.

Apple sells far more iOS devices than Macs, and no iOS devices support runtimes for Flash content. That has had a major effect upon advertisers, publishers, website design, and online video broadcasters, who have collectively made monumental shifts away from Flash. This in turn has made Flash playback far less important on the desktop than it was just a year or two ago, although there is still important content tied to Flash.

Apple has removed Flash content from its own website, although it also has supported Adobe's efforts to add hardware acceleration to the Mac OS X version of Flash, and has approved the Skyfire plugin for iOS' Mobile Safari, which uses a gateway service to translate Flash videos into HTML5 videos that can play on Apple's devices.

MacBook :: Screen Fades To White And Locks Up

Mar 15, 2012

My macbook has a new bad habit of being slow, too many pinwheel timeouts and now the screen fades to white and must be rebooted to work for 5-10 minutes. My research so far indicates a bad wiring between the screen and base or overheating.

MacBook Pro :: Mavericks Screen Fades White

Jun 27, 2014

I'm using macbook pro 13" late 2012 (2.5 GHz, 8GB RAM), with mavericks. As from the last week, the screen fades to white as shows in the attached picture.

At first, the phenomenon occurred just  for parts of the screen - the area below windows got a mark of that window after I closed it with a faded white color. Now it's all the screen.

Notably, the colors on a second screen I tried to connect via thunderbolt are normal. However, I do believe that it's not an harder problem as it sometimes works properly - when I waked it up today it was normal for a few minutes.

I'm tried restarting, reseting SMC & PRAM and logging in with new user account, without success.

IMac :: 27" Doesn't Display Full Resolution On Apple Cinema Display?

Dec 24, 2009

The title says it all really... Quite a simple problem that I can't find any answer to!

I've hooked up my 30" Apple Cinema Display to the new iMac 27" and the highest resolution I'm getting as an option is 1280x800... The iMac correctly detects the ACD as a Cinema HD display but limits my resolution. Why oh why?!

Hardware :: 30" Apple Cinema Display - Is That Resolution Available In A Larger Display?

Aug 14, 2009

I own 23 and 30" Cinema Displays. I like the 23 because everything is larger and easier to read than in the 30". I mostly work in Logic and love that I see lots of things on the 30" but the 23" is much easier on my eyes.Is there such a thing as a display with 2560x1600 (like the 30" Apple) but that is LARGER than a 30 inch so I can see everything bigger in Logic??? Maybe a 34 or 37"? Did a search but haven't come up with anything other than other 30" displays.

Mac Pro :: New 30" Apple Cinema Display

Jan 5, 2011

I was lucky enough to check the online Apple Store at the right time yesterday, and came across a refurbished 30" ACD for $1,299. Ordered it with next day shipping, and less than 24 hours later (i.e. now), I've got it up and running. MANthis thing is awesome I've been using a pair of 23" ACDsboth suspended via an Ergotron dual mount (which is great). Now, I've got some reconfiguring to do. If anyone would be so kind as to tell me if the following moves make sense, I'd be truly grateful. FYI, I've got an early 2008 Mac Pro (3,1), and I do lots of graphics work (mainly Photoshop + Illustrator, CS5but increasingly dabbling in Cinema 4Dand no gaming whatsoever). Here's what I've been thinking about buying to "refresh" my 3-year-old system:

ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Card
SSD (120GB Mercury Extreme Pro) + "IcyDock" mount
2 PCIe cards (both by Sonnet Tech.):
Allegro Express USB 2.0 Adapter Card (adds 4 ext. USB ports)
Tempo SATA E2P Serial ATA Host Adapter Card (adds 2 ext. eSATA ports)
NewerTech Voyager Q- (SATA Hard Drive Dock)........

Hardware :: Apple Cinema Display ?

May 4, 2009

I've been trawling the net to find a review of the Apple Cinema Display by a professional who has used it every day for at least one month, to see whether the reflection on it is as off-putting as it looks in the store.

I went into the Apple Regent Street Store in London on Friday all ready to buy an MBP17 & an ACD24 but then when I looked at the Cinema Display I saw my own ugly face reflected back at me horrifically clearly... When I was trying out the various apps on the screen, even with a white background the glass was still very reflective.

Granted the Apple Store is probably the brightest work environment you'll ever see, but I need to know from people who own and use this monitor daily: is it as reflective as it seems and is that off-putting for your work?

My work requires very precise colour definition so if the reflections will get in the way of that then I'll essentially own a very expensive mirror/paper weight.

I think this adapter will work, but I'm not sure.

I'm not sure because the DVI end of the adapter appears to be female, and I need a male end to plug into my computer.

I'm not sure if I'm over-thinking, confused or just plain dumb. All I want to do is plug the ACD into my desktop.

by the way, I went to microcenter for this, and they pointed me to a 150 dollar adapter - plug the monitor into one side, of it and the other side goes into the DVI port of the computer. I'm hoping I don't need to spend 150
