Hardware :: How To Get Dock On Extended Desktop
Jan 18, 2009
I just hooked up a Dell monitor to my MacBook. I will be using it in clamshell mode 98% of the time. I have the MB on the right side of the monitor. I want to drag applications back and forth between screens. Currently, I have to drag off the left side of the external. How do I drag off the right side of the external and onto the left of the MB? I don't want the MB on the left of the external on my desk. Make sense? When using both screens, how do I get the dock on my external rather than on the MB?

I have an external display for my MacBook Pro, and I'd like to run some short tutorial videos on the external display while I use my MacBook to take notes, recreate lessons, etc. The problem is that every time I click a new video to watch it, it opens on the MacBook display, which means I have to then drag the video over to the secondary display.
Is there any way to tell Quicktime to open the videos on the secondary display without resetting my monitor options? (I'd like my MacBook display to stay as the primary monitor.) I know I could just take notes on the secondary display, but the MacBook screen is a) connected to my keyboard (not a big fan of my non-MacBook keyboard. I like to call it my Windows gaming keyboard because that's all it's there for) so it's easier to use and b) it just looks better.

I tried starting it up and everything goes normally. The loading bar that says "Mac OSX starting" works fine. The mouse pointer appears as normal. The dock will not appear. The menu bar at the top will not appear. No desktop icons will appear. My desktop's background image will not appear. There has to be another way to start a program other than graphically. I have homework due.

Just a strange problem here - when I launch an Application from my Dock (not from the Applications folder) my screen shows up the desktop and then the app. For example I am running Safari now but if I were to open Address Book from the dock, the desktop shows and then the Address Book opens.

Sometimes when I restart my machine running 10.5.8 my desktop background appears but my dock, top menu and desktop icons do not appear. If I force a shutdown and restart, everything comes up normally. This doesn't happen every time I restart, but it has started only recently. I've repaired permissions already.

My safari icon was moved from my dock to my desktop. I am trying to move it back and not have the icon on my desktop. But everytime I drag it to the dock it leaves the icon on my desktop and puts one in the dock. I tried command drag but it didn't work and if I erase the icon on my desktop I loose the whole program. And my kids have an account for themselves and the safari icon is missing completely and they cant get on the internet at all using there account. Can I put the icon back in there account without deleting there account and starting a new one.

You can assign the application in the dock to a desktop. But can you hide the application in the dock in the desktop where it is not assigned? That is, the dock in each desktop should show only the app icons that are assigned to that desktop. Possible? Within OS X or via an app?

A few days ago, I tried to open iTunes, and I got an error message that iTunes could not open because of error 13024. I tried to open skype, and I had an error message that it couldn't open as well.
Confused, I decided to restart the computer. When I got to the login screen, I entered my password and hit enter. The login wondow closed, but the login screen (the purple space picture) remained. I waited and waited, but it still remained. The cursor wasn't showing that the mac was working on it.
Frustrated after trying and retrying to restart the computer and login with no success, I started pushing random buttons dejectedly on the keyboard. When I hit the play/pause button, and iTunes started opening. The same errror message came up, but with it came the top iTunes bar, complete with the little apple symbol in the top right hand corner.
With that, I was able to open firefox, pages, and other recent items. But I can't open finder, and the dock is still gone.
Other issues that have come with this: history items don't save on firefox, copy & paste doesn't work for any programs, i can't sage changes I've made to existing pages documents.
I should note that my startup disk is full. I was in the miiddle of finding files I didn't need to delete when this all happened. I've tried deleting files through the "open..." function in pages, with no luck. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the issue.

I've seen some posts where one or a couple of these problems have arisen but not all simultaneously. The trash is there somewhere because I can delete but only via finder. The dock however cannot be coaxed back into existence and I can't activate any of the desktop icons by clicking on them. I also can't minimise the windows - the red and green buttons work fine but the yellow (although there and blinks when clicked) doesn't have any effect.

Is this bad? Just started happening yesterday. Restarted, but persistent... when I drag a file from an open folder on my desktop, the entire desktop flickers like you can see below. Like ghosted images of all the icons and open windows get scrambled around. It happens in a fraction of a second, but I was able to capture a screen shot. Please let me know what this means.

Every so often the Finder just freezes: can't select any desktop icons or dock apps. Relaunching Finder always fixes it, but it is annoying. I have repaired permissions, cleared caches, no dice, still happens.

The Dock doesn't appear. Spaces is greyed out and won't stay enabled. Desktop picture cannot be selected (stays standard blue screen). Screensaver does not work and cannot set hot corner.
I have deleted the dock plists, restarted, repaired permissions, updated to 10.6.8, restarted again. Still no dock, no Spaces, no desktop picture change, no screensaver.
How did this begin? I had lots of large-memory apps running (eg. Photoshop, Garageband, Pages, Audacity, etc) and then there was a freeze, I can't remember which app – probably Photoshop) and I had to shutdown using the on/off button.
After that startup, all the problems were present. :-( (I've looked at related Dock-crash posts here: I do not have installed: Parallels; Fusion.)

I need to change the monitor setting to MIRROR MODE which I believe is located in System Preferences but I cannot see anything with the current limited display.

when I switch users on my mid 2007 iMac (with Mavericks 10.9.3), the background pictures resizes and the dock doesnt load. I've noted also that switching applications via command+tab doesn't show the icons of the applications, and when accessing "Notifications", it doesnt draw correctly on the screen (the area of the notifications center appears on the right of the screen, but an extension of the notifications is also drawn under hte desktops icons).

So I was attempting to back up my serato scratch and dragged the icon from the dock and dropped it into a desktop folder, and there was a "poof" sound and image display that occurred. I am trying to figure out a) what that means, and b) how to restore my original information i.e crates, songs, song descriptions, etc onto my Serato Scratch program as it was previously.

My computer was acting slow so I ran Tech Tool. It came up with various Volume errors but they were all fixed. I noticed that this computer was formatted as Mac OS Extended but NOT Journaled like the other two in our office. I was unable to add Journaling with either Disk Utility or Tech Tool. Both cases said that "Journaling failed" or "unable to add journaling". I believe I used to have journaling because I often use Onyx for repairing disk permissions and various other processes and this was the first time that I encountered the error "Not possible to verify the start-up volume because it is not journaled". I ran the Apple Hardware Check and the Hard drive is fine. So, after trying the previous mentioned utilities again to try and "journal", I decided to perform an Archive & Install. I am in the process of updating the OSX software, but I noticed the HD still says Format: Mac OS Extended...Hmmmm. Can anyone shed any light on this problem?

I've got an external HD. The first part is formatted to NTFS. The second part was formatted to FAT32. I plugged it in via Firewire and went to erase it to a journaled filesystem. It did something and left the drive unmounted. I could only format it to FAT32. Any ideas why I can't format it to journaled? I want to backup my user dir.
Edit: Tried another drive. 2 fat32 partitions. I tried to format the first and it didn't work. Formats to FAT32 well enough.

So, I am in the process of attempting to partition my disc so that I can boot windows XP.
Know that I am in no way even a capable mac user, so I might be a bit slow... sorry.
During the partitioning process, using boot camp, I get a message saying that I need to reformat my disc so that it is a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) disc. So, I go to my Disc Utility, and it says it already is a Mac OS extended bla bla bal. So, my question is
Why will it not let me partition, and do I really need to reformat my everthing eventhough it already is in the format it wants to be in?

I just called Apple about an iPod issue. When he told me that my iPod's Apple Care expired, I gave him my Mac Pro SN, and he helped with the iPod issue as a courtesy. So while on the topic, I thought to request an extension of coverage for my Mac Pro system (about $5k worth of hardware).
He told me that Apple Care cannot be extended. "So you just have to buy new stuff, huh?" I asked. He quietly replied, "Yes."
I cannot imagine having to buy $5k plus new hardware just to keep my equipment covered. Wow. Did I misunderstand him? Does anyone need some editing work done.
