Hardware :: External HD Access Light Only Shines But Cannot Connect
May 24, 2009
On Thursday I did one of those usual OS updates, but after that my external hard drive would no longer connect to my Mac. My external hard drive is a Buffalo and has no firewire so I have to connect via a chord. The power light is green and happy but the access light only shines for a few seconds as I switch it on, then nothing. I have tried the HD on my work PC and same result. I bought a new connecting cord and same problem.

My college email is a Microsoft Outlook Web Access Light 2007 account, using [URL]. I believe it is an Exchange account, as opposed to POP or IMAP, but I cannot find anywhere what to enter for "incoming mail server", "outlook web access server", or "outgoing mail server". I've tried [URL] which to me seems like the logical answer due to the generic example of [URL] along with a mix of other server names found on my email's about page.

I am new to Mac and have been struggling with this issue for the last week or so: there are a few websites I cannot access anymore (such as www.westpac.com.au, www.telstra.com.au, www.optus.com.au and a few others). As far as I can guess it is not:strictly *.au website related (or at least I think) because I can access some others *.au websites and some other in *.com or *.fr don't work either. My ISP (iinet in Australia) as the websites mentioned above work from my PC when I connect it from home. Below the result from a PING on the first 2 websites in the list above:
PING www.westpac.com.au (203.24.6.90): 56 data bytes
36 bytes from TenGigabitEthernet7-1.ken29.Sydney.telstra.net (203.50.20.41): Communication prohibited by filter
Vr HL TOS Len ID Flg off TTL Pro cks Src Dst
4 5 00 5400 0ea6 0 0000 38 01 978d 10.0.1.4 203.24.6.90
PING www.telstra.com.au (144.140.108.25): 56 data bytes
--- www.telstra.com.au ping statistics ---
37 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss
I have this issue from both my iMac and my Macbook Air, on which I have set up no firewall or other specific filter. I am using a Belkin modem, on which I have desactivated the WiFi to use a TimeCapsule as a WiFi router. I get the same issue when I try to connect from Safari, Firefox or Chrome. I have exhausted all tips and tricks I have from the PC word.

I have a white 13" MacBook. I'm totally Mac illiterate. I bought the Mac because I just about to dig my eyes out in frustration dealing with MS Vista. I like the MacBook.....but about a year and a half ago, the right channel of my 3.1 speaker setup cut out. It worked fine for the 1/1.5 years of ownership.
Internal speakers? Work just fine. Headphones? Perfect stereo.
External speakers with subwoofer? Right channel is dead.
I've tried max laptop volume and creeping volume on the actual speaker up. I've tried max external speaker volume and creeping the Mac volume up. I downloaded a ToneTester program. Internal speakers and headphones just fine. 3.1 externals? Right channel dead. I don't have the red-light jack issue. My Sound Output toggles between Headphones and Internal Speakers output perfectly. About 7 months ago while putzing with all the settings, I got it all back out-of-the-blue. Perfect stereo with subwoofer. I had it for about 2 months and then poof - right channel faded again.

I am having trouble accessing select websites (apple.com, usps.com, timewarnercable.com, vivalavinyl.org, amongst others). I tried with Safari, Firefox, Opera, IE, but to no avail. I used to be able to access these sites with no problem, and I am truely baffled as to why I can't get to them all of a sudden.
Here'S the error message I get in Firefox:
Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.apple.com.
* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

My main computer is a MPB17 with 256gb SSD and 750gb HD in an optibay. I have huge media libraries and like to have ready access to all my photos and videos. I have a Gen 1 Air that I use at home for mail and surfing and I have been using my iPad for mail and web when out. I have a max spec 11" Air arriving this week. It weighs the same as my iPad with Vaja case so I'm going to take it everywhere and leave the iPad for a reader in bed. Now I'm starting to think I might leave the 17" in my office and sync the 11" Air up and use if when I'm out. Problem is I want a fast, light USB drive to hold my media. Ideally with USB and FW so I can sync it fast with the MBPro.

I'm sure this has been posted, but my search pulled up hundreds of threads. After I scanned the first 50, I decided to just post my question.
I have to wait a few days (at most) for my job to register my MAC address so that the new Mac Pro has access to the network/internet via ethernet. It does not have an Airport card or Bluetooth. While I am waiting, is there a way to connect the Mac Pro to my Powerbook (which has Wifi internet access) such that it can piggyback on the internet connection as a temporary solution?

I'm currently staying in university residence where our internet access is all through wireless access point through the building; in this environment, is it possible to setup a time capsule such that it connects wirelessly to the nearest access point and then allows me to connect to it (the TC) wirelessly or by ethernet (then get an address by DHCP in the TC or the access point)? I was hoping to use the TC as a backup for my imac and macbook, as well as a mounting point for drives I plug into it but thus far haven't been able to come up with anything that works ideally (i.e. tried connecting all my stuff to the access point but the backup worked way too slow over 802.11g to do anything realistically when its shared among many other people).

I have recently purchased a Toshiba 2 TG external hard drive to hold media files for my Western Digital TV Live Plus media player. I formatted the hard drive in OS Extended Journaled and my macbook pro has no trouble seeing the hard drive and transferring data to it from my mac's internal hard drive. My issue is that some transferred files will not show up right away on the Toshiba hard drive. I have to search them out by name and then most of the time they will appear, but other times, I have to wait quite awhile for them to show up. I was transferring via an eSATA cable and originally blamed it on this, but it is also happening when using a USB cable.

OSX has a rather annoying feature, on many commands it will spin up my external harddrive out of its sleep mode. I have to wait for the harddrive to get up to speed and during that wait i get the spinning beach ball. Its really annoying because it will do that on things totally unrelated to the external like bookmarking a webpage, going into a new tab in safari, switching between programs.
What i would like to to make it so that the external harddrive is only spun up when its actually being used! I dont want to have it going all the time because i value the quietness of my mac, at the moment its pretty much silent apart from when the external harddrive is going or the fans are going flatout. I have Lion Server 10.7 running on a quad core mac server. Everything is working internally and I can access all the services etc. I have purchased a ssl certificate for the server. With all the correct port forwards in place (using a pfsense router) I can not get any external access to work no matter what I do. I have other servers behind this router and they all work. It seems to be just a OSX thing.

My G4 finally died, no big deal, I have a pretty recent back up. It simply does nothing when I try to start it, browsing the forums indicates it may be a switch issue, I tried resetting the PRAM. Anyway, I was hankering for a new one anyway. Is there a guide out there to pull the HD to access as an external on the new Imac I plan on purchasing tomorrow? I probably need an external HD kit, but would it be worth it? There are probably some photos and music I added since my last backup.

I've read most of the articles in Support but can't find an answer. I read this too [url]...
I'm running itunes 10.5.3 on my imac. I transferred my itunes music folder to an external drive because it was taking up too much space on my internal drive. Then I went into itunes preferences and changed the location of the folder to the external drive. But I can't access tons of my mp3s now. When I click on a song in my library that it can't access, I get that explanation mark, and a statement asking me if I would like to locate the file. I locate it, and then I can listen to it.
And after I find that missing file for itunes, a window pops up and asks "Would you like itunes to use the location of "-----" to find other missing files in your library"? I select 'yes'. But then itunes can't find the missing files, even if they're in the same exact folder as the last one I found! It seems to me like this function is broken? And I have like 2,000 missing files! I even re-imported my itunes music folder back into my library. But that didn't work and now I have a ton of duplicates.

I have a PC on my network that has a secondary internal hard drive and an external USB 2.0 hard drive that are both shared on the network. From my MacBook Pro with Lion, I have no problem accessing the C and second internal drives, but cannot access the USB external drive from the Mac. I have no problem accessing the external drive from my 2 other PC's on the network. The external drive has the exact same sharing settings as every other internal drive on my network.
All PC's are running Windows 7 and this is a home network. I don't have any servers or anything running. I just set up basic file sharing so that I can access any drive of any PC from any other computer on my network. The Mac just says "The operation can't be completed because the original item for "T" can't be found." when trying to access the external. Lastly, the Mac is on wifi, not ethernet.

I recently put all my itunes music on an external hard drive. Got it working ok and deleted the files on my computer thus freeing up 200Gb or so. I could still play my music ok and the playlists / covers there as expected. Then i tried to add another album and it said unable due to my access privileges? Now my itunes is taking forever to open. 30 mins and counting. How do I change the privileges settings on my external disk for me / and administrator and do I need to do it at the music folder, the itunes folder or on itunes on my computer?

My iMac (Model 4,1 operating 10.6.4) drive has made some funny noises recently when inserting disks. I want to back up Pages documents to DVD's so that I can take them to a print shop if needed later. I have an Iomega back up hard drive but I really want an external burner. I used to have a Tower years ago and loved the front loading slot (great for burning Word, Excel, Pages and PDF files to DVD's}. While I have the Iomga back up drive, that will not help if my computer sighs it's last breath & I need to access some of the back up files.

For the 1st time, I hooked up my seagate 7200 1tb external hard drive that I put in my own enclosure to my i7 2010 macbook pro. It is formatted to FAT 32 for maximum cross platform compatibility without the need for software etc. I plugged it in via a usb hub. The hard drive has been plugged into a PC prior to this. It mounted & was recognized right away, I got an offer to use it with time machine, but I did not want to use it for this, this one is for photos etc. I could see all my content fine, I could not quite figure out how to just move a folder of content from my mac's drive to the external hard drive. So did edit copy & edit pastes & this worked.
I noticed that while the external was plugged into the mac, it was making an access noise that it makes when files are being accessed or moved, but it was doing it the whole time it was tuned on & plugged in. When it was plugged into my PC, it only made the access noise when files were moving or being accessed, but not just being turned on or plugged in. When files are being accessed or when something is being done, a red activity light blinks/is on, & it was on the whole time while plugged into the mac. Apart from that, it seemed to be ok, I could read & write files, was just curious as to why the red activity light & noise is going on the whole time it is plugged in.

I have a 500 gb Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive. I installed NTFS-3g so I could read the NTFS files on it. I could access ALL 31 GB of files on the hard drive before today but now I see only 4 little files that I put on there yesterday (only 2 GB).
When I click on 'Get Info' for the hard drive, it says I have 31.4 GB of files in it but I can only see and access the 4 files that comprise only 2 GB of space. I'm wondering if I deleted something from the hard drive that allowed me to read the 31 GB of files. Perhaps some NTFS-3g file? How I can see and access all 31 GB of files on my hard drive again?
