I have a PowerMac G5 and a PowerBook G4 w/o webcams, and looking at buying the external firewire isight from apple. Does it work with Skype? I know iChat works, but what about Skype? Also, can I use my Snowball with the isight or not?
View 4 RepliesI've had my 13" MacBook Pro for 10 months and I'd always tried to use the iSight with Skype here in Australia but it never worked. I just put it down to bad integration as I'd read on forums that it's a common issue. I finally took the MBP into Doncaster (Melbourne, Australia) Apple Store after I'd tried everything else and they gladly replaced the whole screen within the hour. I just wanted to say that I'm suitably impressed with the service they offered. The genius ran tests and tried to get it working and accommodated my request for a quick turnaround. Is this a common issue with the iSight and is this a common turnaround time for a repair?
View 2 Replies View RelatedToday I used for the first time the webchat feature in Skype. My laptop is a MacBook Pro i5 with Skype 2.8.0.851, MacOS is 10.6.5. My parents are using a decent Asus laptop running Windows 7 and the latest version of Skype for Windows. My connection is an 8MB via WiFi (n router). Theirs is a bit slower as it's via a dongle. They said that they could see me very well, no issues whatsoever. On my Mac the webchat was of very poor quality, pixelated, constantly freezing, massive delay. It was barely usable. Is anybody aware of any known issues between Skype on a MBP and on a Windows 7?
Pity I can't do this test, but I would like to see how their end of the chat was, I would like to understand if it was really good or just my parents' inexperienced opinion (they just bough a laptop for the first time). Once thing is for sure though, their chat wasn't constantly freezing and they could see my well 'like a tv'. I couldn't. On a slightly different note, just found out that my 'mighty' $1,499 MBP has a VGA webcam. The cheapest laptop you can buy in the UK for $299 has a 1.3MP webcam. Gutted. This clearly means that the quality of my webchat will never be particularly good and that having a grainy picture is considered 'normal' if you factor in the very limited resolution of a VGA camera (Unless you watch a teeny tiny window like a stamp) independently of the connection speed.
I was messaging with some friends on Adium and I couldn't see their cameras neither them could see mine. Does skype offer this?
View 12 Replies View RelatedI have a 15'' 2010 macbook pro that I've only owned for about a month and a half. At first the isight camera worked great,I used it multiple times for photobooth. But a few weeks ago I tried to used it for skype and noticed it just showed a black screen. I thought maybe the problem was just with skype, but I started checking other programs and it's the same in all of them. The green light is on and it's recognized in system profiler, but the screen is black.
A few days after this happened, the problem seemed to fix itself, but then it went right back to the black screen 2 days later, and had been that way ever since.
I tried resetting the PRAM, but it didn't help. Is there anything else I can do, or is it time to give in and take my macbook to the Apple store?
im on a 17 in i7 ag 500gb machine.
i use skype everyday but i just noticed that the sound from skype is coming only from the right speaker. its weird though because any other sounds from skype, like alerts, come from both. all other sounds are fine on the comp. i tried looking through the settings and nothing is there that i saw that could fix this.
I was looking to use a external iSight with an external monitor setup. Currently it works as my MacBook has a firewire port. However, if I switch to a notebook (i.e. MacBook Air) without a firewire port, is there anyway plug my iSight in using just a USB port? Is there a Firewire/USB hub out there that will allow me to plug in the iSight with only a USB connection?
View 7 Replies View RelatedEven though my MacBook has a built-in iSight, I still use my old external FireWire iSight since I run my MacBook in clamshell mode, and my external monitor doesn't have a built-in webcam. All in all, I love it - it works well, looks good, and I use a nifty gooseneck stand with it that can be repositioned just about anywhere. It was perfect for my needs, and I was never interested in changing webcams. However, after upgrading to 10.6, my external iSight no longer works. I have no idea how to fix this. I know they're old, but has anyone heard whether or not Apple was making them obsolete?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have OSX 10.5.8. In the past, I was able to use PhotoBooth, but now when I open it, all options to take a photo are grayed out. The screen, where, I believe, previously I'd seen whatever was in the built-in camera's lens (generally whatever I put in front of the screen to photograph), I now see all black with a white camera icon crossed out. Skype works fine though. When I try to load iChat, it crashes unexpectedly. For clarification, I'm using the built-in cam and do not have external camera hooked up to it. I don't really care about iChat, which I never use, and am very, very glad that Skype, which I do use, is working. However, I would very much like to get PhotoBooth working.

After updating, seems that my iSight camera no longer functions. In iChat, the user on the other end had no video from me, nor did I have a preview. In Photo Booth I get nothing but a black screen. The green LED indicator still functions as if the camera was on, but no image at all. I tried zapping the PRAM and resetting the SMU or PMU as well, but with no luck. It acts as if it's functioning properly with the light activating and system profiler recognizes the iSight cam in USB devices.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm attempting to use a Canon Optura 300 MiniDV camcorder as a webcam for Skype on a current-generation Intel Mac Mini, running Mac OS X 10.5.6 Server with the latest release of Skype.
Connected via Firewire (1394a 6 to 4 pin) Skype recognizes the camera without any problems and the image is crystal clear, but it does not recognize the camera's built-in microphone as a sound input option. Testing with iChat, Apple's software does recognize the on-camera mic as sound input (and passes-through fine), but it never actually appears as an input option in the System Preferences' Audio panel, which I think is the root of Skype's problem.
The Optura, with a wide-angle lens attached, gives us a wider field of view than our external iSight, making it more useful for showing off our newborn, from the comfort of our living room (without having to huddle around the MBP), to friends and family currently far afield. (Plus, since the Mini in question is our media server, we can Skype via our HDTV.)

I have reached this website after scrawling to find a solution on the internet. I hope someone can help me with this problem.I have a 4 years old G4 ibook (OS 10.3.7), and have been using it for internet, skype and foto-storage mainly.Situtation:Yesterday I tried to use the internet (Firefox browser) and skype, but the skype didn't work at all. Since firefox was not working properly either, I did force quit and restarted the computer. I attempted this several times until I could use both applications (never had any problems before). However, Skype didn't work, and in the end, I could not quit firefox at all. At last I did force quit again, and saw white screen with apple icon at the centre when restarting. No time-spinning mark, the apple just sits there.
Troubleshooting that I have done:
I called up support center, and they told me that it's very likey that the computer is stopping at "'carnel" stage (I'm sorry but I don't know what this is). The possibility that it's got something to do with HD is 50/50, so I may have to send it to repairing service in the worst case. They told me to try using Disc Install CD1 to check/repair something wrong in my computer. So I followed the instructions and inserted the install CD and restart the computer with "c" key. The computer read the CD and Installer window showed up. As instructed in a manual, I used First Aid in Disc Utility, and tried "repairing disc". After a while it said "1 HFS has been repaired". It also said that Macintosh HD doesn't seem to have a problem", so I quit the disc utility and restarted the computer.
Against my expectation, the same white screen with apple came up on the screen and sits there with no other movements.I'm afraid of trying somethinig without further so I hope I can get the same story or ideas that someone here might have.
On the right hand side of my desktop when I download a program it seems to put an icon or doc on the right hand side. Like right now I have a skype dmg file I can't delete as it says Skype is in use, then right above that is a seperate skype icon that even if I drag to dock it still stays on the right hand side (like a copy), then I downloaded open office again and it put the install icon there (like when you open and you drag your program to teh applications folder)

The first I managed to get returned and replaced, that is a seperate and complicated story in and of itself. This particular issue started with a boot up sequence that was taking about 5-6 mins. After going through the drill with Applecare thought I could restore using Time Machine. That's when I found out that the FW400 port no longer worked to power my Oyen Digital 250G FW drive. Any thoughts as to what might be the problem? This is my second MBP and Oyen Digital FW drive. I had them both replaced!

The camcorder has a Mini DV Firewire jack on it (I think this is called a 4-pin connector sometimes too). But on the Mac Mini, I can't tell if I need a 6-pin or a 9-pin. Can someone point me to a good cable so I can dump some MiniDV tapes into iMovie?

It's quite and fast compared to my old Samsung 500gb, 5400rpm hard drive. It was worth the $120 I spent on it!

I have a somewhat old Seagate FreeAgent external drive (like this).
It has a switchable port controller, one has a USB2 and eSATA and the other has two FireWire 400 ports [URL].
Now, on the FW controller it says "Dual FireWire 400".
What is Dual FireWire 400? And does it implicate that I can use both ports together somehow and get FW800 by that?
I just got the external harddrive "Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex USB 3.0 1TB" with a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Upgrade Kabel FireWire 800. I have neither a USB 3.0, nor a Firewire 800 on my white macbook (2008). I already know, that it's possible to use USB 3.0 with an USB 2.0 port, but I would like to use it with the firewire to spare the USB port for other devices. My question: Is there an adapter or cable to use the Seagate Firewire 800 with my Firewire 400 port? I don't know, where and what to look for.

i just thought it was compatible because it said it was made for the mac and i really wanted to use my surround sound system. So my dilemma is that it came with a firewire 400 cable and I have a firewire 800 port on my mac mini which i bought recently. I've looked for some adapters and I saw one that said it accepts male firewire 400 6 pin and at the other end is a 9 pin firewire 800. it says its designed to connect your firewire 400 cable so it can be used in firewire 800 ports for newer macs. I'm not 100 percent sure what all that means and I didn't want to go buy something without being sure that's what I need.

View 5 Replies View Relatedso my colleague's computer, a G5 powermac, had to have the harddrive replaced a month ago. she was in thunderbird, OSX asked her if she wanted to install the usual software updates, she hit yes, and it all went blank and would only restart to a grey screen after. took it in the the store, they replaced the harddrive and migrated everything over to the new one. ever since, she can't get skype to work - no matter how many times we try reinstalling it, it just bounces once in the dock and then quits. there are other quirks too - in word, some of the icons show up as 'quicktime pict'.
we've tried running disk utility, deleting the plist and cache files related to skype, reinstalling quicktime, and nothing helps. any suggestions???
