I have a disk with two partitions. One is the usual case-insensitive format, the other is case-sensitive. Can I change the 2nd to case-insensitive without reformatting and losing all data?
View 3 RepliesI am working on restoring a Time Machine backup from Leopard to a clean installation of Snow Leopard. The only problem I'm facing is that the Leopard backup is on a case-sensitive drive (and the Snow Leopard drive is set up, by default, as case-ignorant).
I have scoured the Web the last two days and have not found a definitive answer to my question: Is there a way to transfer the data from the Time Machine backup on the case-sensitive drive to the case-ignorant Snow Leopard drive?
Yesterday I ran across a tutorial explaining how this might be accomplished using SuperDuper! but a commenter explained that Disk Utility could be used and was much easier.
I tried the Disk Utility method but it didn't work, and I ran out of time to give the SuperDuper! option a try. Does anyone know if it, or even Carbon Copy Cloner, might solve my problem?
Every unix system that I've worked with has had case-sensitive file names. In other words, file name "foo" is different than "Foo" is different than "FOO" and so on. In the MAC OS X shell,
if I have a file name FOO, and I type "more foo", then the contents of FOO are displayed, instead of an error message saying "foo not found". It also means that I can't really create files "foo" and "FOO".
Is this something that Apple has implemented on top of unix? Is it possible to get around this, so that the names do indeed become case-sensitive? It doesn't seem like an inherent unix thing, because if I type "f <tab>", and the only file in the directory.
So, I just received my iMac and after playing with it for a few weeks I find that I don't like the fact that it was shipped with a case insensitive install. I was hoping I could simple run some command to convert, but there doesn't appear to be any "easy" way to do this. I assume I can simply reinstall and as part of the install format the drive case sensitive.
My questions are as follows:
1) Is a reformat/reinstall my only option (not a problem but I though I would ask)
2) I don't expect Mac OSX to have a problem running in this environment but if someone is aware of any restrictions I would love to hear it.
3) Would this have any effect on my plans to install Windows 7 via bootcamp? (once it's supported that is).
My entire I-tunes library is kept on an external HD that is formatted as MAC OS Extended (Case-Sensitive, Journaled). I formatted this external over a year ago when I moved to Mac per the genius's recommendation at the Apple Bar. Today, I had the sneaking suspicion that it was time to migrate to a new External HD as mine has some wear on it and I kept getting weird error messages during the transfer of the I-tunes library (meaning it just stops and give me a very windowesque error message).
What I have been able to tell is that MAC OS Extended (Case-Sensitive, Journaled) will not correctly transfer to regular old MAC OS (Journaled). Am I stuck in "Case-Sensitive" land forever with my I-tunes Library? Apple Care offered no advice except to point out the problem. I can format the new drive as Case-sensitive but then it appears that I'll be stuck with doing the same thing when I get another External HD in the future.
Is it possible that I change my external HDD format from HFS+ case sensitive to HFS+ normal(not case sensitive)?

This issue may have been present in Mavericks as well, but I have no first hand experience with Mavericks. I was recently updated to Yosemite at work and this is when my Mighty Mouse (wired, with a scroll wheel button on top, NOT MAGIC MOUSE) started going nuts.Â
I have my work settings matched exactly to the settings on my Mighty Mouse at home running on Mountain Lion. Horizontal scrolling is not an issue at all, but vertical scrolling is so incredible sensitive. I very slight scroll will send me to the op or bottom of a page in almost all applications. It is extremely annoying in my Adobe apps. I work in Illustrator moots the day and this scrolling issue has killed my production time. Â
I use my vertical and horizontal scrolling quite a lot in doing my work. The vertical again is fine and seems to match my scrolling at home, but any more than a single click of the scroll wheel since updating to Yosemite will send my cursor off of the artboard, which is sometimes very large. I t has too often centime to the edges of the pasteboard which than takes forever to try to scroll back into position. I simply use the Fit Artboard in Window key command to center my work on screen and then gently scroll to where I need to be. Â
To set my scrolling speed to slow will correct the vertical scrolling but will make my horizontal scrolling so heavy that I have to resort to using the hand tool to move around in my Illustrator app, which I have employed full-on at this point because it is the only consistent solution I have found.Â
Many people have suggested that I get rid of the Mighty Mouse and use the Magic Mouse. I have many reasons for not doing this (my 3D work needs a middle button for one), but I have also been reading that these Magic Mouse users are having their own scrolling issues.Â

I was wanting to know how hard it is to change top and bottom case and keyboard area? I would like to know that if anything was to happen to my soon to have macbook I could change it. Also this on the older macbooks. And if I have Apple to change it how much would it cost? And yes I know that they should replace keyboard case area for free because of the defunct cracking issue.

The k key on my G4 iBook, OS 10.4.11 all of a sudden has a mind of its own, even when I just place my hands on the home keys without pressure, it activates. Have tried to eliminate problem in Preferences keyboard, but it doesn't seem to cure it.

I tap it like every other key and it usually takes 2-3 or more times before it changes. Is there really anything to do? I hate to take it back for something so trivial. As you may know, FileVault only encrypts the Home directory, and stores the password as a hash of the account password and the "master" reset password.
So, what sensitive stuff is outside of the Home Directory? Any system logs with potentially damaging info? Any badly written applications (i.e. MS Office 2004) that might keep sensitive data within the Application directory? Any stuff inside of the Library or System folders?
If I pull on my headphones while they're plugged into my unibody any more than .5mm the sound goes back to the Macbook speakers. Are anybody else's headphones this sensitive? I really don't even have to pull on the headphones. The headphone jack doesn't securely hold the cord.

On XP, the tap click is so sensitive that it's virtually unusable, and the touchpad has some responsiveness issues. Is anyone else having these problems, and is there a drivers fix? I'm using a 2.66ghz unibody MacBook Pro if that's relevant.

It's not the cursor speed, but the accidental "mouse clicks" while moving the cursor across the screen that have become troublesome (I daytrade securities in Windows, and a rogue mouse can be an absolute back-breaker). The only resolution has been to disable "tap to click" in the Bootcamp Control Panel. I've seen dozens of aged threads across the web regarding the issue that unfortunately provide no real solution for this. Do you have any solutions of your own?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been using my mum's MPB C2D quite a bit, in anticipation of my own i5 arriving, and one thing that gets on my nerves is the ambient light sensor. It seems to be really sensitive, to the point where it will change the screen brightness when there has been no real changes in ambient light. If you move your hand over the sensor at the top of the screen, or even if someone walks past and casts a shadow it can change for a few seconds. Also, just moving the laptop around and the sensor changes the screen.
Obviously this setting can be turned off, but I'd like the feature if it wasn't so sensitive. Other than that, I love the MBP and can't wait for mine!
After years of faithful sevice, my MacBook Pro has recently taken to registering clicks as double or even triple clicks, and I have to try several times to get the single click I want. Actually, it's become so sensitive that it only takes a light touch (less than needed for the button to click) to think that it's being clicked. I assume this is a hardware issue. Do I need to take my computer apart to solve it?

I've had my Macbook Pro since mid 2009. It's been great, never had any real problems. Then in about October, I noticed one side of my trackpad wasn't offering as much resistance as it was before. I just ignored it, didn't mind too much. But it progressively got worse, and eventually got so sensitive that I couldn't even scroll without it clicking when I didn't want it too.I was pretty upset, called apple, they told me to send it in and fixed it for free. It was all very nice, orderly, and quick. So I was satisfied.But, lo and behold, it's at it again. I can't believe it. It hasn't gotten so sensitive that I can't use it yet, but I'm very upset right now. I have no idea why it's doing this. It's not really overheating, I have never dropped or hit my macbook. I'm the only one who uses it. I don't abuse it at all.

I created some blank disk images to store sensitive data in; with some I created my own password and with others I had the system do it. I also made the mistake of instructing the system to remember the passwords. Remembering the passwords kind of defeats the purpose as it automatically opens the folders. I want to be prompted for a password and never have been. I want to delete the blank disk image folders, but have not found a way of doing this and then I will create them again and instruct it not to remember the passwords. How to delete or change the password settings?
