OS X :: Transferring ITunes From Case Sensitive To Journaled

Oct 22, 2009

My entire I-tunes library is kept on an external HD that is formatted as MAC OS Extended (Case-Sensitive, Journaled). I formatted this external over a year ago when I moved to Mac per the genius's recommendation at the Apple Bar. Today, I had the sneaking suspicion that it was time to migrate to a new External HD as mine has some wear on it and I kept getting weird error messages during the transfer of the I-tunes library (meaning it just stops and give me a very windowesque error message).

What I have been able to tell is that MAC OS Extended (Case-Sensitive, Journaled) will not correctly transfer to regular old MAC OS (Journaled). Am I stuck in "Case-Sensitive" land forever with my I-tunes Library? Apple Care offered no advice except to point out the problem. I can format the new drive as Case-sensitive but then it appears that I'll be stuck with doing the same thing when I get another External HD in the future.

OS X :: Unable To Know About Case-Sensitive To Case-Ignorant?

Jun 14, 2010

I am working on restoring a Time Machine backup from Leopard to a clean installation of Snow Leopard. The only problem I'm facing is that the Leopard backup is on a case-sensitive drive (and the Snow Leopard drive is set up, by default, as case-ignorant).

I have scoured the Web the last two days and have not found a definitive answer to my question: Is there a way to transfer the data from the Time Machine backup on the case-sensitive drive to the case-ignorant Snow Leopard drive?

Yesterday I ran across a tutorial explaining how this might be accomplished using SuperDuper! but a commenter explained that Disk Utility could be used and was much easier.

I tried the Disk Utility method but it didn't work, and I ran out of time to give the SuperDuper! option a try. Does anyone know if it, or even Carbon Copy Cloner, might solve my problem?

OS X :: File Names Not Case-sensitive?

Oct 25, 2010

Every unix system that I've worked with has had case-sensitive file names. In other words, file name "foo" is different than "Foo" is different than "FOO" and so on. In the MAC OS X shell,

if I have a file name FOO, and I type "more foo", then the contents of FOO are displayed, instead of an error message saying "foo not found". It also means that I can't really create files "foo" and "FOO".

Is this something that Apple has implemented on top of unix? Is it possible to get around this, so that the names do indeed become case-sensitive? It doesn't seem like an inherent unix thing, because if I type "f <tab>", and the only file in the directory.

OS X :: Case Sensitive Installation On IMac

Dec 10, 2009

So, I just received my iMac and after playing with it for a few weeks I find that I don't like the fact that it was shipped with a case insensitive install. I was hoping I could simple run some command to convert, but there doesn't appear to be any "easy" way to do this. I assume I can simply reinstall and as part of the install format the drive case sensitive.

My questions are as follows:
1) Is a reformat/reinstall my only option (not a problem but I though I would ask)
2) I don't expect Mac OSX to have a problem running in this environment but if someone is aware of any restrictions I would love to hear it.
3) Would this have any effect on my plans to install Windows 7 via bootcamp? (once it's supported that is).

OS X Yosemite :: Mighty Mouse Sensitive Vertical Scrolling Sensitive?

Dec 4, 2014

This issue may have been present in Mavericks as well, but I have no first hand experience with Mavericks. I was recently updated to Yosemite at work and this is when my Mighty Mouse (wired, with a scroll wheel button on top, NOT MAGIC MOUSE) started going nuts.

I have my work settings matched exactly to the settings on my Mighty Mouse at home running on Mountain Lion. Horizontal scrolling is not an issue at all, but vertical scrolling is so incredible sensitive. I very slight scroll will send me to the op or bottom of a page in almost all applications. It is extremely annoying in my Adobe apps. I work in Illustrator moots the day and this scrolling issue has killed my production time.

I use my vertical and horizontal scrolling quite a lot in doing my work. The vertical again is fine and seems to match my scrolling at home, but any more than a single click of the scroll wheel since updating to Yosemite will send my cursor off of the artboard, which is sometimes very large. I t has too often centime to the edges of the pasteboard which than takes forever to try to scroll back into position. I simply use the Fit Artboard in Window key command to center my work on screen and then gently scroll to where I need to be.

To set my scrolling speed to slow will correct the vertical scrolling but will make my horizontal scrolling so heavy that I have to resort to using the hand tool to move around in my Illustrator app, which I have employed full-on at this point because it is the only consistent solution I have found.

Many people have suggested that I get rid of the Mighty Mouse and use the Magic Mouse. I have many reasons for not doing this (my 3D work needs a middle button for one), but I have also been reading that these Magic Mouse users are having their own scrolling issues.

Applications :: Transferring ITunes From Laptop / Backuping Itunes And Restoring It?

Apr 7, 2009

Brand new convert to Mac here: After receiving an iPod Touch from my boss when he upgraded to an iPhone, I have fallen in love with the Mac hardware and OS. I just got a new macbook and would like to transfer my iTunes from my old PC laptop. I am also a neophyte to iTunes so forgive me if there is a very simplistic answer to this issue.

The physical music is located on my external drive connected to the PC with the iTunes original music locations pointed to it . My specific question is, if I backup iTunes, restore to the Mac, plug in the external drive to the Mac, will it work seamlessly? I'm not sure if the existing iTunes music locations will re-synch since the music locations on the laptop iTunes are mapped to the "G:" drive. If it won't work that way, what do you recommend as the best way to go about it? I want to make sure I don't waste as much time as when I initially set up my iTunes/iPod touch (simply stuck in "PC" mindset).

OS X :: Format Mac OS Extended (journaled)?

Jan 19, 2011

My computer was acting slow so I ran Tech Tool. It came up with various Volume errors but they were all fixed. I noticed that this computer was formatted as Mac OS Extended but NOT Journaled like the other two in our office. I was unable to add Journaling with either Disk Utility or Tech Tool. Both cases said that "Journaling failed" or "unable to add journaling". I believe I used to have journaling because I often use Onyx for repairing disk permissions and various other processes and this was the first time that I encountered the error "Not possible to verify the start-up volume because it is not journaled". I ran the Apple Hardware Check and the Hard drive is fine. So, after trying the previous mentioned utilities again to try and "journal", I decided to perform an Archive & Install. I am in the process of updating the OSX software, but I noticed the HD still says Format: Mac OS Extended...Hmmmm. Can anyone shed any light on this problem?

OS X :: Can't Format To Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?

Jun 26, 2007

I've got an external HD. The first part is formatted to NTFS. The second part was formatted to FAT32. I plugged it in via Firewire and went to erase it to a journaled filesystem. It did something and left the drive unmounted. I could only format it to FAT32. Any ideas why I can't format it to journaled? I want to backup my user dir.

Edit: Tried another drive. 2 fat32 partitions. I tried to format the first and it didn't work. Formats to FAT32 well enough.

OS X :: Transferring ITunes To Internal Hd / Itunes Present In External Hd

Dec 21, 2010

I currently host my iTunes library on an external HDD which I set up to use on my Mac Mini. I just successfully swapped in a WD Scorpio Blue 640GB HDD into my MBP A1211 and also fresh installed Snow Leopard so the laptop is clean and free of anything I don't want. Even ran Monolingual thanks to advice I read on here.

So basically since my MBP's HD is large enough to comfortably accommodate my iTunes library I'd like to copy it onto it's HD from my external.I did some searching but it was mostly how to transfer from PC to MAC with external blah blah. My situation seems easy enough since I already have my iTunes in an external...

I'd love to just drag it over to my BMP's HD but I want to do it right. Can someone give me the steps to get my iTunes into my MBP?

current iTunes already in external HD and being used by Mac Mini. need to transfer iTunes copy from external to MBP's HD. Want steps, thanks!

Hardware :: Formatting External FW Drives - Using Extended Or Journaled?

Jul 15, 2008

I've been having problems with 3 Maxtor 500GB 400/800/USB FW drives. They will randomly unmount themselves -- forcing me to turn them off, wait a minute, then turn them back on. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to when they unmount themselves. All three drives had been formatted using Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and I'm on the most recent version of Leopard.

Thinking I had 3 lemons, I called Seagate (who purchased Maxtor) for tech assistance. The tech guy told me that external drives should not be formatted using Journaled, only Mac OS Extended.

OS X :: External Drive (NTFS) - Convert To Mac Journaled Volume?

Nov 8, 2009

I got an external drive (NTFS). I want to use it for mac. Do I just partition it into 2 partitions? Or do I need to Erase it into one Mac Journalled volume first? I am erasing it now, it says its gonna take 12 hours. Or is erasing the first step. And then partitioning is the second step. Two distinct processes/operations, right? (I basically want two partitions on it, both OSX journalled. One for super super, and the other to maybe try sandbox or just storage or maybe time machine.

MacBook Pro :: Transferring Itunes From PC?

Aug 6, 2009

I finally got my brand new MBP 13''. It is a great machine. As the title notes, this is my very first Mac, so I don't really know the innerworkings of them well.

I wanted to try and copy over my itunes music and stats from my PC. I wanted to try and keep all my playlists, ratings, playcounts, etc. as well as all my songs. I'm wondering if there is a best way to do this? Also, is there a good way to keep a library synced between the PC and Mac? Or will that be way too much work.

Also, I synced up my gmail to work the Mac mail program, only problem is that it put all my email from Gmail in the new folder. Every piece of mail that was archived in Gmail is now showing up in the new folder.

Lastly, is there any site or blog that highlights all the great things one can do with a Mac. I feel like I need a quick tutorial on the good free programs to get as well as little shortcuts that will save time.

ITunes :: Doesn't Wake External Drive With Library In Case If Remote Access

May 29, 2012

I have latest iTunes 10.6.1 and its library located on external drive, connected by FW800.

System properties -> Energy saver -> Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible is On  Everything works perfect in case of local access.

Also in case library's drive sleeps, it takes just several seconds more in order to wake drive. But remote access works only in case the drive is waked somehow. I.e. if Home Sharing is enabled and drive sleeps I cannot get access to the content from remote iTunes or Apple TV.

I think it is a bug, remote access shall be not broken in case the drive is sleeping. Also it is known, some forums explain that you shall never put external drives in sleep mode in case this drive used for iTunes Home Sharing [URL]

ITunes :: Transferring Library From Old Computer To New

Nov 6, 2010

I had ITunes on Win XP, desktop. All my selections have been downloaded to my IPOD. Have now purchased new laptop but had problems transferring ITunes library from old computer to new so just recreated Library from scratch on new laptop by copying my CD's but did not have all CD's as some were borrowed. In other words, I now have songs on my IPOD (and on old desktop) that I was not able to reload onto the Laptop.

I want to make sure that when I plug my IPod (which now has all the songs on it from my desktop) into the laptop, I don't lose those that are not in my Laptop library. Do I have to upload into the laptop from the IPOD those which have not been duplicated? Or make CD's of the songs on the desktop that I couldn't load in, and upload them to the laptop?
