Hardware :: Apple Updates White MacBook With Faster Processor And Memory

May 27, 2009

Apple alongside its 2009 Back-to-School promotion on Wednesday also updated its entry-level white MacBook with a faster Intel processor, memory architecture and more hard disk space.

The update was announced quietly on the company's online store. For the same $999 Apple charged for the previous iteration of the white polycarbonate model, users get a 2.13GHz processor (up from 2.0GHz), a 160GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm (up from 120GB), and 2GB 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM (up from 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM).The update is the second this year to the Cupertino-based company's entry-level notebook offering, the first of which arrived on January 21st when model was updated with NVIDIA's 9400M graphics architecture.

That update also saw the notebook gain the same 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 1,066MHz front-side bus employed by the mid-range aluminum unibody MacBook, as well as a doubling of its memory to 2GB. The new white MacBook is eligible for Apple's just-announced Back-to-School promo, which offers a $229 online rebate good for a free 8GB iPod touch to qualifying education individuals who purchase a qualifying Mac and the iPod on the same receipt before September 8th.

Mac Pro :: Which Processor Is Better / Faster

Aug 12, 2010

I'm definitely no computer expert, but with all these Mac Pros with all these cores, I'm not sure how to read their configurations. The single quad core is 2.8 GHz. But if you get an 8 core, you get 2.4GHz. And then there's the six core which is 3.33 GHz!! Which of those is faster and why? I don't want to spend $1000 more for more cores if it's actually a slower processor

OS X :: Will A Faster Processor Boost Internet Speed On My G4

Mar 24, 2009

New to the Mac world here, and really diggin my G4,which I got for free. But I need help with a frustrating situation. Here's the specs: Powermac Gigabit Ethernet dual 500 mHz G4,40 GB primary and 160 GB slave HDs,2 GB RAM,and a fresh install of Tiger with almost nothing downloaded, basically,a brand new machine. The issue: both firefox and Safari are sludgy on internet speed--watching Youtube videos, using Facebook, etc. It's not an ish with my router or modem--my older PC's blaze. it's really frustrating, and I've maxed out the RAM,so I want to know if an upgrade to a 1.8 or 2.0 processor will alleviate this problem once and for all,or if I have a boat anchor. Honestly,I don't do hardcore computing, just burn DVDs,a little photoshop, and play on the internet. There's no reason it should be so damn sluggish watchibng streaming video or simply writing on someone's 'wall' on Facebook.

Desktops :: Cores Or Faster Processor For Video Editing?

Jun 16, 2009

I am in the market for a Mac Pro for all my FCP editing. I found a guy who can get me a great deal on a brand new 8 core 2.8GHz Mac Pro, but it is the older version before the "Nehalem" chips.

This computer will be right around the same price as purchasing a brand new quad core 2.93GHz Nehalem Mac Pro.

So what I need to figure out is, what is more important, more cores, or faster newer processor?

IMac :: More Memory - Processor Choices?

Oct 26, 2010

I am finally upgrading to an iMac and I need some help. I was looking at the 21in ones and I have a choice of processors 3.06 Ghz and the 3.2 Ghz (and even the i5 3.6 Ghz). Should I pay the extra $300 and move from the 3.06 Ghz to the 3.2? For this computer, I will be doing photo stuff and some video. Family things - nothing for work or commercial use. Or should I opt for more memory instead and not worry about the processor. From studing Apple, processor choice seems to help keep the machine current (or pertinent) longer than anything else.
The low level iMac seems ok, but should I bump up to the next level machine.

MacBook Pro :: White Screen Of Doom After Installing Updates / Mouse Icon Continuously Spinning

Apr 17, 2010

Macbook Pro 15". Product #: Z0GG

Backstory: Sunday the updates window popped up so I let it run and reboot. Boot screen is stuck on the white screen with apple logo and spinning icon. None of the typical hotkeys were working like the Shift key to go to Safe Mode. I decided to resinstall Snow Leopard which went perfectly fine since I was able to boot off of the Install DVD. Everything seemed fine after the install and I had all of my previous programs and files.

It worked fine all day yesterday until I shut the lid to leave work. I got home, opened the lid and the spinning mouse icon was continuously spinning. I could move the mouse but couldn't click anything. I shut it down using the power button. Upon booting it up I did not hear the boot up sound but a white screen displayed and didn't do anything from there. I rebooted it again, inserted the Snow Leopard DVD to try and boot off of that and it won't even boot off of the DVD. None of the typical hotkeys work either, not even to eject the DVD. I do hear the DVD spinning up but it doesn't do anything; just a white screen.

I did reset the PRAM which forced it to reboot and I got the startup sound back but it still only shows a white screen. Any ideas? I forgot to purchase Apple Care last month before my 1 year warranty ran out so I'm 1.5 months out of that.

OS X :: White Macbook Accepts 3GB Memory Upgrade But NOT 4GB?

Feb 25, 2009

I have just taken delivery of a new white Macbook and I upgraded HD to WD Scorpio Blue 500 GB HD and memory to Corsair VSA4GSKIT667C4 Mac Memory 4GB 2 X 2GB PC2-5300 667MHz200 -Pin SODIMM for apple laptops.

It would not work even after correctly reinstalling the new memory a number of times

I decided to put back the original memory but by mistake I installed one old dimm and one new dimm and the computer then installed Mac OS X on the new HD and works OK.

Info shows 3GB of Memory = 1 x 2 GB and 1 x 1 GB.

Why will it not accept 4 GB?

MacBook :: Upgrading NEW White - Memory & Harddrive

May 7, 2009

I am looking into upgrading my PBG4 1.33 to a NEW (updated) white macbook.

My question is regarding upgrading the memory & harddrive. iFixit makes the changeout of these items look incredibly easy. Is it? (i am by no means a fix-my-own-computer person, but I did recently replace memory and harddrive in my PBG4, and that was much more involved than what it looks like this process would be) I can get a 320G 7200 HD on ebay for under $60! Add in the RAM from ebay, and you are looking at upgrading the $999 macbook for under $100 - Apple charges nearly $300 for these upgrades, and it is a 5200 HD!

Am I missing something? Can I really put the 7200 HD in the new macbook? Is it really as easy to replace as it looks?

Mac Pro :: Video Driver Updates - Color Seems Almost White

Jun 30, 2009

I've got an early 2008 Mac Pro, and when I now run at the native resolution on my monitor, the color seems almost too white. Lettering gets washed out a bit (like writing text on this forum post). The white bleeds over everything. If I take a screen shot and look at it on a different mac, it looks fine - so there's something wrong with my video drivers. I can boot the machine into a Snow Leopard build and everything looks fine, but back in my main Leopard build, it doesn't. Is there any way to re-apply video drivers?

Also is it still ok the drive makes a noise when you either turn the macbook on and / or when the macbook comes out of sleep. MacBook Pro :: Stuck At White Loading Screen With The Apple?

Feb 14, 2012

Ok, last night there was an update for OSx Lion. I installed the 3 items, it said I needed to restart, which I did. When it restarted there was another box, which was checking the updates or something. After that finished, it logged into my home screen, and I shut it off. Today, I tried turning it on and it was stuck. After 10 minutes, I held the power button to shut it off and try again. I did this twice, and on the third time a loading bar showed up at the bottom of the screen, went for a while and almost reached halfway, then it dissappeared. I waited, but nothing happened. What's wrong and how to I fix it? I think its 10.7.3, but it might be 10.7.2 I'm not sure what the difference is.
