Hardware :: 20" ACD Red Pixel Flickering?
Aug 5, 2009
Last week I purchased a 20" Apple Cinema Display from Best Buy, it was a display model from the sales floor, looked amazing, I was actually looking for a 23" NOS but they gave me the 20" at a price I could just not refuse.
It was working great till last night, it begin to flicker certain pixels red where they should be black. Usually around the source of motion, for example the screen saver, the edges of the effect would flicker red instead of being black like the background. This was very minor at first but would progress to the whole black area flickering red, then go away, come back, so on and so forth. It actually did it once or twice when I brought it home but it was very minor and I dismissed it as being in my head, one of those "did I really see that?" type of moments.
Best Buy doesn't have any more in stock so they cannot replace it, they suggested I contact Apple for warranty support. Apple's website says the unit is out of warranty but I have sent them the sales receipt so they can update my purchase date, at which time, I should be covered and hopefully get my display repaired because I really do like it and it matches my office quite nicely.
My questions is regarding the worst case scenario, where my display is not repaired/replaced by Apple.
Has anyone had any luck determining the cause of these anomalies?
Apparently the flickering pixels is common among the older ACD family so I was wondering if the fix was out there. Maybe a revision "b" part of some sort that takes care of the defect.
My instincts tell me it's some sort of EMI/RFI issue, maybe improper shielding on something. Maybe a result of the power, dvi, usb, and firewire all being in the same sheaf. I'm sure the cable is shielded but maybe it's something that proved to be in adequate in certain environments and so a newer revised cable was released. I don't know, I'm just thinking out loud here.
I tested the display on my MacBook Pro, MacBook with the Mini-DVI to DVI adapter, and a Dell Desktop I have with an Nvidia card and the result is the same with all three computers so I'm sure it's the display.
The display is plugged into a UPS but it does the same thing when not plugged into the UPS in a different outlet in my home. I tired to move it around to different breakers to see if it was isolated to a certain outlet/breaker in my home, but they all give the same results.
I think I have an old ISOBar (power filtering power strip) somewhere I could try to see if it's a dirty power issue but my other monitors didn't seem to mind it if there is indeed a noise problem with my home's power.
I don't know... I would love to hear the thoughts of other users who have had and dealt with similar issues with their ACD.

I've heard in their disclaimer that you can't do anything about it but just knowing it's there is annoying.

i just bought a used macbook, for about 1 year now there has been a red pixel line on the lower left side of the screen and the pixel line runs about 4 inches up, i ran a pixel check and tried massaging the screen and nothing works, i ran a program called PiXel and found out that it turns red on red, yellow on when all the other colors on the screen are blue and And it turns reddish when all the other colors are blue, it turns orange-yellowish when all the colors on the screen are black and its white when all the colors are white.
now my question is do i need a new lcd screen? or do you believe it's one of the connectors? or do you think its the logic board?

In the lower-right corner of my whitebook, there's a bright white oval of sorts about 1/8" in diameter. It can only be seen when there's a white background (like right now here in the forums).
After trying to clean it like it was a smudge , I'm almost certain the pixels are dead in that spot. Given the size of the area, how many dead pixels are we talking about and would Apple replace my screen?
It's no big deal really since it's at the bottom but if this thing were in the middle it would be quite annoying.

Today I noticed a dead pixel on my MB in same bar where the Apple logo is. When Safari is open the dead pixel is a bit above the 'o' where it says 'History'. and I can't do anything to fix it. Im wondering if applecare will cover this though. My MB model is now discontinued (uni MacBook) so even if I can get an Apple store to take it in would they replace the screen or the machine?
Here is a picture that recreates the annoyance almost as perfectly as I see it.

Received it yesterday and I dropped it off at FEDEX within 2 hours.
It's replacement will be here Tue or Wed so I am wondering how many exchanges I can expect before I get one without any dead pixels.
Mine had two but the person I spoke with at the Apple store online said that this was unusual - I hope he is right but I am half expecting to see more dead pixels when I plug in the new one in a few days.

I received my very first apple computer yesterday. It was the 27inch i7 with 8gig of ram. I turned it on for the first time and it looked perfect. When the loading wheel came up on the white screen I noticed a dead pixel right next to it. I looked over the rest of the screen and I could not find another one. I ended up calling and asking for a new imac. The first person on the phone said they usually only do replacements for 4 or more dead pixels. After I explained that it is right in the middle and I noticed it the first time I turned it on he forwarded me to someone else and they got me a shipping code. I not am waiting another week for a new computer. Is it normal for people to return their machines for one dead pixel? The guy on the phone made it sound like it was no big deal.

I have owned my new MBP for less than 3 months and I have already spotted a dead pixel. It is about 2.5" about the dead center of the monitor. Whenever I have a browser or any other light background up I see it stick out like a sore thumb. I did a search on the forums and saw that Apple has a "policy" regarding these things before they will replace it. The nearest Apple store is 3 hours away and they want me to bring it in. Obviously I don;t want to drive all the way there for them to turn me away. What do you guys think....too OCD? The short amount of time I have owned it though makes me want it fixed...and I can't NOT see it now that I know it's there (yes it's a double negative).

I have just purchased my new Macbook Pro 15" 2.4 i5 with the glossy hi-res screen and low and behold I have a pixel that stays red in the middle of my screen!!! So disappointed with Apple So now I have the task of trying to get it replaced, I heard they don't replace them with only 1 dead pixel, but it is in the middle of my screen! I paid over $2000 and I believe that this is truly unacceptable.

My white Macbook, the one i'm currently typing on; the screen keeps flickering. 've uploaded a video taken from my cell phone of the screen flickering. I love my white macbook but the screen keeps flickering until I keep adjusting the angle of the screen. Some days the screen flickering is minimal and I'll adjust the screen easily with minimal screen flickering. Other days i'll be adjusting for a few minutes until I can get it at an angle where the screen doesn't flicker. Here is the link of the screen flickering: [URL]I've noticed there is less/to no flickering at all the closer I adjust the screen downward, i.e., the closer it is towards the macbook itself being closed.
As for the Macbook itself, it was purchased in December 2006 and have had AppleCare since. In June of 2007 I took it in to Apple since I noticed the screen flickering very minimally only when the screensaver came on. I was then told a small soda spill was on the logic board and AppleCare would not cover it, though I was still covered regarding all cosmetic repairs, aside from that soda spill. It hasn't been till the past 2 months the screen flickers heavily and I'm just sitting at my desk adjusting the screen until there is no flickering so I can get my work started. I was considering selling my Macbook for anyone that wouldn't mind the screen flickering but i've upgraded this Macbook with a 500 GB hard drive and before attempting to sell it i'd rather fix the problem myself.
Everyone, I'm all ears. I'd love to fix this problem. If it means completely voiding my AppleCare warranty and opening up my Macbook, so be it. the warranty expires in 6 months anyway.

I'm using an external monitor (acer p235h) hooked up to my mini display port w/ an hdmi adapter. Before I updated I had no problems but when I updated to 10.5.8 it seems that I have some "flickering" issue. I'm not sure if it has something to do with the refresh rate but basically it looks like my monitor is slightly vibrating. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I did a quick search of the forums, and so I know there are previous threads about this. But my screen is flickering a lot lately and so I plan on either sending it to Apple, Driving 3 hours to Dallas since it's the closest Apple store, or taking it to an authorized repair place here in town. I just have a few questions for anyone that has either had this problem before or maybe just has dealt with repair issues before.1. Should I wipe my Hdd?2. Which of the three options would be the better bet?3. Anyone know if they would just fix it or if they would replace it?

Recently, I just discovered a stuck pixel on my 13-inch MacBook Pro. I got it in June 2010 and somehow, there is a stuck pixel near the bottom of the screen. I have tried the widget where it flashes red, green and blue on a small area, but it didn't work. Oh yes, it appears, that using the widget, the pixel only appears when it is green, but not when it is red or blue.
In addition, on a standard background like white or when there is a slight tint of blue like the slightly bluish lines in Finder (in list view). However, the pixel cannot be seen on a black background. Even when the brightness is lowered, the pixel is highly visible, until of course when the brightness is zero.
Can anyone please offer some advice? I believe that it is the only stuck pixel I discovered so far.

After my great experience the last day with my two days old MBA 1.8Ghz/SSD I stopped smiling after I discover a stucked RED pixel in the middle of the screen. Normally I'm not such a whiner, but $3000 is a lot of money for a laptop, and I think you should expect a 100% flawless product for this huge amount of money. What to do? I tried the online video fixer for more then 10 minutes... didn't work. Should I give it a try at Apple? Or is it a no go? The problem is, I bought it at an Apple reseller who had this MBA as showroom demo for a month. So even though for me the product is only 2 days old, i think for Apple it is one month old and that would imply that I lost all my warranty and refund rights already. What to do?

I got my new 24 iMac today. It's the new released model. After working with it some time now today i found a stuck pixel on the screen. I think it is stuck because it is bright red and not black. Is there anyway to fix this? I have tried jScreenFix without any luck. Is there anything apple will do with this? Spending this amount of money on a new computer it should not come with a stuck pixel...

I just bought my white MacBook and its a great computer except for the 2 dead pixels that i found. On the left side there are 2-3 dead pixels about 1 inch from the bottom of the screen and 1 inch from the top.
I bought it from BestBuy this Sunday and only discovered the problem today. So my question is can they tell me that it is OK for an LCD to have 2-3 dead pixels and refuse to do anything with it? It is unacceptable in my opinion, as the LCD technologies have been out for a while, as well as Apple's products are usually of very high quality.

I noticed shortly after I bought my Mac last week that I had a stuck pixel. I don't know if it was there when I first turned it on or not, but I have been trying to ignore it, and really the reason is that if people see it, they will think what I have is defective, when it is really only one pixel that I can probably work back awake. I know I have OCD-tendencies, so I was wondering if there are people out there that have a stuck/dead pixel that they are okay with having on the screen! Sorry for the weird post, but I was hoping to find some posters who have gotten over the fact that a pixel of theirs is dead/stuck.

I bought a MBP 13" at the end of november and had no problems untill last night. On the glowing white apple on the front of the laptop there is now what looks like a grey smudge. It doesnt rub off though and it appears to be inside and not a surface mark. Could this be a dead pixel or something? it doesnt affect the main screen but is really bugging me.
