Applications :: Seem To Encode In Any Other Format Except For Best Performance?
Jun 13, 2010
I can't seem to encode in any other format except for Best Performance. I switched the preferences, changed the encoding setting and then the box goes grey and I can't do anything. I've got plenty of space on my hard drive, and I'm just running out of idea. Any advice?

I have an octocore 2009 Mac Pro with 16G of RAM and it just crawls in iDVD encoding MP4s. CPU usage is very low considering all of the processor cores available. Handbrake, on the other hand, just flies when encoding because it lights up all eight cores. Is there some way to speed up iDVD so its encode performance is more reasonable? At the rate it's going now, it takes around an hour to encode 60 minutes of video.

Quick question. My MBP is currently encoding a video (iDVD). If I put it to sleep will it be able to pick up where it stopped when I turn it back on?

I've just ordered a MBP 2.4Ghz with 7200rpm 750GB drive, I will be adding either a single 8GB memory stick (total of 10GB) or a 16GB kit. I'm looking for my first SSD use as a boot drive for OSX and potentially Win 7 in BootCamp and hope I can get some counsel on model selection and configuration. I read that SSDs suffer a performance drop (sometimes significant) as the drive fills up. Also there are both 256GB and 240GB drives.Â
1) Are there models that maintain performance over time? Is there a specification that indicates how performance drops as the drive fills up?Â
2)Â Is there a performance difference (current / long-term) between 256 and 240GB drives?Â
3) Does an abundance of RAM improve performance and / or longevity? Â
4)Â How much space (if any) should be kept free for swap files in OSX / Windows?Â
5)Â With 240 / 256GB SSDs, how much usable space is available after formatting?Â
6)Â Is there a difference in performance based on file format NTFS vs. HPS+?
7)Â Do I need to be concerned about major name brands (Intel, Samsung, OCZ, Kingston, etc.) being incompatible with MBPs?Â
8)Â Are some SSDs easier to install / configure / maintain on a MBP than others?Â
9)Â Are there any issues I should be aware of regarding the installation or use of a SSD that would impact my MBP's warranty?Â
Based on performance, reliability and 5-year warranty, I've been attracted to the Intel 520. I've also read good reports on the Samsung 830. One review indicated that the 830 maintained performance over time while the 520 experienced a significantly greater drop.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3), 2.4Ghz, 16GB RAM, 750GB 7200rpm

i was shooting an image film with a CANON XF100, and now i have a severe audio problem! All the data (imported via SD-Card to my Mac) was somehow corrupted. It sounded like "Trash", always cut-off or so. I tried to import it to FCP7, yet no success. Is XDCam going to work or any other method to encode MXF to MOV? Â
how to encode the MXF-files to (uncompressed) MOV or MP4-files. If possible, without a 3rd party-software to purchase. i know some software too, yet Handbrake or VLC seems to fail, too.Â
So, simply a way to either convert the MXF-data directly into a FCP7-proejct or maybe FCPX, OR simply to convert it to a MOV or MP4, whatever FinalCut can use and import...Â

I've tried iDVD for the first time today and have had mixed results.I tried putting some Bugs Bunny cartoons I have as avi files into a Magic iDVD project to make a DVD.
The titles are great, the video quality is super, but there's no sound. Not a peep. They play fine in VLC, but without sound in Quick Time.I know nothing about video editing, so am hoping this is a just a codec issue that is easily rectified given a nudge in the right direction.

I have a 15" MBP 3,1 (Sept 2007) Intel C2D 2.4GHz, 4MB Cache, Santa Rosa, 4GB Ram, 500GB Storage @5400RPM, GeForce 8600M GT 256MB VRAM) I am a student (returning to school) and so I qualify for the Adobe discount for the Creative suite. I already have CS3 (Master Collection) and am considering buying CS5 (Design Premium). I was wondering if I should notice any performance decrease/increase and any general thoughts if it's worth it or not.

A bit of an odd request, but here goes...
Is there any software out there other than Apple DVD Player that can play (non-commercial) HD DVDs? Apple's player is dropping frames on my system so I'd like to try something else if possible.
Otherwise, are there any tricks to get better performance out of DVD Player?

Running Fusion on my 2+ year old MBP has become a near hopeless frustration. When I first got the machine, it ran pretty well, but it hasn't for quite awhile now. It tends to be sluggish to the point of uselessness. Currently, I'm doing a trial of Fusion 3. I'm a licensed owner of the prior versions.
I don't need it much, but when I do, I really need it. I gave up on using it with Windows 7, which is fine, XP will do. Once in awhile, I'll run it and all will be well. Other times, most of the time, it's unusable. I see no pattern to what makes it run well or not. Earlier today, I rebooted and started Fusion all by itself and didn't run anything else. Didn't help much.
Anyone had these problems and found a solution? I see lots of people with problems and plenty of others without. But not many who've bridged the gap.

I'm running Snow Leopard on my new Macbook Pro. I've got a 1.5TB External hard drive that I'm trying to figure out how to format in HFS+ with Apple Partition Map. I can figure out how to format in HFS using Disk Utility, however it still does it in GUID format and I do not know how to do it in Apple Partition Map.
Googleing this for hours has lead with all kinds of information on how to go to GUID FROM Apple Partition Map but not the other way around. I know GUID is the new hottness.. but this drive will be used exclusively to connect to my XBOX 360 and it supposedly only reads HFS+ when its formatted with Apple Partition Map. (I have tried it with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with GUID, and the XBOX does NOT recognize it) I do not want to use Fat 32, (I know that that is the other major option) beacuse it limits file size.

I'm using Macbook Pro(2010, 10.6.6) and a PC with Windows 7. I need to transfer image files from both laptops to an external drive. I formatted the external drive in exFAT and wanted to know if there are any problems that might occur in the future. I already know there is an issue with such programs as Carbon Copy Cloner. I primarily need the drive for backup of the images and not system backups. Do you have any file corruption or other problems formatting in exFAT?

I've got a 27" iMac, 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5, running the latest Snow Leopard update.
In browsing thru my Applications folder I noticed that I have an app called "Microsoft Silverlight".I never downloaded that app. Is that part of Snow Leopard? If not, why do I have it, what does it really do? I searched the internet but do not really understand it., do I need it? Will it degrade performance if I uninstall it? What is your advice? As you can probably tell, I am a relatively new Mac user and not a computer expert.

I have had this issue for a while. No matter what I try, Flash movies are SLOW on my 1.5GHz PowerBook G4. I have 1.5GB of RAM, Leopard, and the latest Flash (Flash 9). Every video and game that I run in Flash is choppy unless I set the quality to "low". This occurs in Safari, Camino, and the standalone Flash Player application itself.

I installed XP onto Boot Camp, so I can run some Windows games on it. At first, it didn't seem like it was that bad but after loading Sims 2, 2 expansion packs and 1 stuff pack it was a little... different. Windows still starts up pretty quick and everything, but in OS X... the performance has been decreasing slowly. Doesn't the things only affect the things in the Windows partition instead of OS X? Safari's performance wasn't as smooth as it used to be.

Since I've heard snow leopard incorporates 64-bit features, does this mean iLife '09 itself will encode movies faster, idvd encode faster etc.? I'm not familiar with 64-bit advantages.

I?m new to the music world but would like to start learning and I would like to start asking two questions. I would like to start converting all my music (my CDs) to .AAC or MP3 files and would like to know what would be the best way to do this.
What would be a good program to convert my music from CDs to .AAC or MP3 format in a Mac?
Does itunes converts standard music format (from a cd) to .AAC by default?

What video format is best when using the "dvd video from video-TS" option in Toast 7.0.2? My goal is to burn a video onto a dvd and then watch it on any tv. So far, I've tried the .mpg and mpeg4 video formats. I find that the video quality with .mpg is poor with a jittery picture when watching it on tv via a dvd disk. The video itself plays fine on the computer, and the dvd-r disks that I use are of high quality. Comparatively, Toast did not accept the mpeg4 format when dragging this video into the "dvd video from video-TS" window.

Is there away to format a mac but retain some applications (it would be under a new account profile)? Also is there away to like import an old mac's admin account to a separate account on a new mac? Basically I have an old mbp and I've been using my new mbp for awhile and would like to import the old admin account (doesnt need to stay admin since I wouldd rather keep my new admin account) to this new mbp? I would like to wipe clean my old slow mbp but keep applications such as Office.
