View 3 RepliesSafari Reader: Apple's Weapon of Mass Destruction. Steve Jobs gave his usual keynote address at WWDC today. The iPhone took center stage, as expected. But there was another announcement that web publishers should take note of and should dread: Safari 5. The release of Safari 5 constitutes an absolutely vicious attack by Apple on web publishers. Specifically, the inclusion of a feature called 'Safari Reader' may ultimately prove financially devastating for many web publishers.

After realizing how much faster Safari is than Firefox at just about everything, I've decided to make the switch. However, along with mouse gestures, the thing that is really holding me back is that there doesn't seem to be auto-scrolling. The little icon that pops up when you press the middle mouse button and scrolls the page automatically. Is there really no auto-scroll or am I missing something?
View 3 Replies View RelatedAnyway to disable this? I can in Firefox but can't figure it out in Safari. They're taking them from the bookmarks, not the history, FYI
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I search for something in the Google-toolbar in Safari (5.0.1), it does not autocomplete the words anymore. I'm guessing I turned the auto-complete feature off by accident. I have no idea how to turn it back on. I'm on 10.6.4

In Adobe reader->Preferences->internet Display PDF in browser using Adobe Reader (9.3.1) is checked and beyond this I'm not sure what to do to change from preview to reader.
I'm running osx 10.6.4 and Adobe Reader is giving me fits. It doesn't play well. How do I change the default PDF reader from Adobe to Preview or iArchiver? Adobe Reader just grabs hold of the download and won't let go.
I just tried NetNewsWire, and Vienna, NNW is nice but Google Reader has a great feature that these both are without.
In GReader, when I mouse over or scroll down it marks that one article as read. No pushing buttons, clicking next, nothing. Just read.
I want to be able to pre-download all of my current unread items, AND the pictures. Gears for GReader does NOT download the pictures. I have a lot of picture only feeds, like lolcats, that I would like to let build up for a week and then on my long plane ride home, check out.
In NNW I can smash the space bar and get this accomplished, but I'd rather just scroll through, or at least have the option to.
I don't really like the look of Vienna, it's too unpolished, NNW is a tad better and has better options for like the prefs.
It would also be interesting to be able to give specific instructions, or adjust certain settings on a per-feed basis. Such as filter out cartain keywords (Without using a service such as feedrinse).
I hat vienna because once I click on a feed, it marks everything as read. That's bad for me as I sometimes just open a mega feed and read one or two items. I have maby 20 or 30 feeds, but usually get 2-300 new items a day. Most are junk like Joystick, but I like to sit down and go through the important ones while im taking a break or eating lol.
I know you can't but it'd be interesting to allow some feeds to auto queue an embedded movie, let me view it offline (or off my VPN.
I'm brand new to mac, just got a 15" mbp. On my PC I was constantly used to clearing cookies, temp files, history, etc under properties on IE, because for security reasons, and to keep viruses at bay. What does the "Empty Cache" feature do on Safari 4? Is that the same as clearing cookies?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI love safari. Its fast, looks great, and does everything I want it to. Outside of poor flash support (I hear macs in general are just bad for flash) everything works. What I don't like in safari is the top sites feature. I don't mind that it keeps track of which websites i visit most often, but I hate how it takes a little snapshot of every website and saves it in the website preview folder in the cache.
I didn't know you had to manually delete it and when I did it was taking up over 1.5 gb of space (/user/library/caches/com.apple.safari/website previews). I don't understand why apple couldn't have just made top sites show your most commonly visited website (like chrome or opera) and instead had to take on the website previews. Is there a way to disable top sites or at least prevent it from saving previews of websites everytime I use it?
Other than Safari, what do you use as an RSS reader? I played with Newsfire but something just didnt fee right about it. I like Safari, but I think its feed updating can be hit and miss.

So why exactly does this "Open in Dashboard" feature still exist in Safari? I haven't gotten it to ever work properly any time I tried to use it. Is there still any actual use for this or did Apple just forget about it?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've decided to move from firefox to safari after discovering glims. One thing that I often find myself doing (to no avail) is holding the command key and pressing a number to jump to a specific tab (tabs from left to right correspond to numbers on the keyboard). Is this feature available somewhere in safari under different hotkeys? I can't find it.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am using the latest Safari 5.1.5 on my MBP with OSX Lion 10.7.3. I noted that when I click on Reader in the URL line, sometimes I can't get the function to work. That is, I don't get the uncluttered view with the print option. I can manage without the function as there are other print commands and I use Evernote as well. I just wondered if the Reader function gets disable sometimes. To be clear, I am not referring to the Reading List function.

After uninstalling pdf reader from adobe, I lost possiblitiy to opend pdf documents in safari. Usually, before installing adobe reader pdf documents opened nicely in Safari, with link to download or print a document. Now, all what opens is a gray page, without any content in it. When trying printing, I get blank page. Has anyone encountered this problem? How can I switch to old Safari behavior - native pdf reading ability, present in OSX?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Safari 3.2.1 and find that I have no operable Back- Forward browse feature.
The buttons are there but always grayed out as if no previous page existed. Too, when I right click on a web page I no longer get "back" as a default. It comes up "reload" no matter where on the page I click. Finally, when I view History the only link displayed is the page that I am on. To get to a previous page I must select "Earlier Today". I DO NOT have Private Viewing selected.
What gives? This is a primary feature. lacking it makes it very difficult to use the browser.
I have always used Firefox, but I am finally getting used to Safari. There are a lot if cool features that Firefox doesn't have. In Firefox, I could start typing my usernames and it would automatically fill it in. How do I get Safari to do this? I don't want Safari to remember my passwords, just the usernames so I don't have to type them each time I log in.

I'm wondering why some websites when turned to the "Reader" option in Safari, some html characteristics are missing. One that I noticed was the <hr> tag that creates an horizontal line across an html page. Is that a normal thing for Reader to do? Can it be forced to display that somehow?Â

View 2 Replies View RelatedAt the moment I have removed Acrobat Reader 10.3.1 because it conflicts with Safari. Preview is a perfectly fine pdf reader (and with lots of very nice features) but I don't see how I can make Preview open a pdf from a web page until it has been downloaded to file. And I have found at least one site that will not download to file before opening.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI used to use Preview to view PDF files but found the files didn't display properly, in particular the annotations, so I installed Adobe Reader & the files displayed properly. Lately though the files have changed & open in Safari through a plugin, which doesn't display properly & don't give the option to open in Adobe Reader. I have deleted Adobe Reader & re-installed, but it is a long process to get it to open in Adobe Reader. Â How do I disable the plugins & get PDF files to open directly in Adobe Reader?
